“We so zombie!”

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

The Halloween weekend was fairly eventful…

Saturday night was Miss and Kevin’s annual Dork-O-Ween party, which aside from hanging out with some comic book friends, afforded MK & I chance to test-drive our Clark Kent and Lois Lane get-ups.

It was also the first chance to check out their new apartment in the lower east side, which is a stone’s throw away from “PixelJump HQ”. Kevin was dressed as a Ghostbuster (Venkman to be precise, with a really sweet hand made proton pack) while Miss simply smeared some shit on her face for a Dirty Sanchez (which she later chipped away at the sides for a Hitler Sanchez… it wasn’t really shit btw, just beauty mud). Marc was also on hand as “Wilkofsky Wonka”. We just stood around around drinking and talking, plus watched bits of the Manosthe Hands of Fate…. coincidentally enough, I was was watching MST3K on DVD the night prior and earlier in the afternoon.

I guess the highlight of that evening, for me at least, was telling Miss my usual assortment of bizarro tales about my dad to the point where she couldn’t take the insanity anymore. That and how awesome my Clark Kent hairdo was, courtesy of my roommate Stephy; its was perfectly shaped, and rock-solid, like a M&M’s candy coated shell.

The next night, around midnight, MK & I met up with Joe to check out Dr. Chud‘s yearly Halloween eve’s bash at Don Hill’s. But the doctor was a total no-show, so instead we saw a glam/goth band from Japan called D’espairs Ray. The crowd was totally batshit insane for them, which was mostly nerdy and/or chunky chicks, mostly Asian, plus a few dudes, all around 15 years of age, tops. You know how most rock guys spit water into the audience and how the audience goes nuts? Well, you also know how when said rockers spit, its generally a fine mist? Not this guys, who shot perfect streams of water directly into their fans faces, and they loved every second of it. Though the best was when they threw their empty water bottles into the crowd and how they all fought like fucking animals (especially the really sad pathetic dudes; one was practically elbowing girls in the face for their prize).

As for the music, what can I say? I dug it. Course I’m into J-rock; it was like seeing a band comprised of all the gothy, effeminate characters from Guilty Gear and King of Fighters.

Once the show was over, the crowd quickly dispersed (no doubt to to Penn Station for that last train to Rutgers or something), but we stuck around to chat and drink. I was hoping to get a D’espairs Ray shirt, but none looked that hot, though MK did snag a pair of panties. Then the dancing music kicked in, but again, it was just us plus a trio of pole dancers who had no one to dance for (aside from Don Hill, of course). Joe & I got on the floor (at this point, the booze started kicking in) and then one of the dancers (who had a slutty cop thing going on, though I have a feeling she dresses like that every night) joined us, doing the classic “she so fucking blitzed out of her mind” moves. MK thought it was all hilarious, but eventually the crazy chick dragged her out onto the dance floor.

Afterwards, we returned to Joe’s place where him and I drank some more, and again MK had loads of fun laughing at our stupid antics. I’ll spare the details since its pretty embarrassing, and mostly for myself. Versus was also on cable, which was perfect for the occasion… a zombie flick, albeit versus mobsters…. but it has easily the worst dub job of any film that I’ve personally seen. Around 4 in the morning we called it a night.

The next day, Halloween proper, was the blessed occasion: the wedding of Zane Ferraioli and Liz Baillie. As mentioned previously, it was a super hero wedding, though in actuality, it was mostly a super villain affair, with the groom bride dressed as the Joker and Harley Quinn respectively. Though Batman and Robin were attendance (Robin was played by Robin, of course, who’s costume was custom made by MK… none of the pictures does her work any justice, it was pretty damn fantastic).

I’ve said it before (mostly to folks that I know who are currently planning their weddings) and I’ll say it again: theme weddings totally fucking rule. They beat traditional church weddings hand down, no contest. I’ve been to plenty of both kinds, though mostly the theme ones… medieval, gay wedding by the beach…. and this one was perhaps the most fun. Plus I just loved dressing up as Clark Kent. First off, I love dressing up in nice suits, hence why I was happy to once again incorporate one into yet another Halloween outfit. But I think its safe to say that almost all comic book nerds secretly wish they could walk around in a costume each and every day, so when one gets the chance to be with others in the same exact boat, the fun that’s had is simply infectious. I had no problems playing the part of Clark becoming all nervous when bad guys noticed the red, blue and yellow peeking behind the shirt and tie. I know it sounds a bit childish, but come on, it’s Halloween!

Anyhow, the ceremony itself was sweet, poignant, and to the point, which honestly is how every wedding should be. Some might have noticed that it was in the park right next to the Manhattan Bridge, which further added to the comic book feel. The reception was also loads of fun; there was a live band doing the music early in the evening that got everyone rocking on the dance floor. The man with the best moves was easily Joe Flood who had a made for an absolute killer Two Face.

I don’t know Liz and Zane personally (they’re MK’s friends) but both are super friendly and awesome (I should add that Zane had a totally awesome Cesar Romero-type Joker thing going on). Also met several other really nice folks, such as Ari, who was one of the bridesman, though instead of a Batman villain, he was dressed as Mike D of the Beastie Boys. Then there was a girl named Jill who was dressed as Power Girl; MK & I ended up giving her a ride home, as well as her friend Philip, who came as the Penguin. While chatting, Jill disclosed that she used to attend the Big Apple con dressed as Jax from Quicken Forbidden back when Dave & John used to do the show. John even had a name for her: “Jillbait”. I’m still constantly amazed by how incredibly small the world is sometimes.

After all that, MK & I hit our favorite diner in Park Slope, the Daisy Diner, where they actually have a photo booth inside, so we just had to take a picture…

BTW, for the rest of the pics, just go here.

Oh Well

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

So yeah, this weekend…. things have changed. Katie’s not swinging by NYC as originally planned, which totally bites. I was looking forward to playing tour-guide to all the genuinely cool spots during the day, and then screen Taste of Bread, Karate Ruler, and all the other bizarre movies and shows from my massive collection of weirdness all throughout the night. Plus I had just put the final touches on a mix CD which is custom made for someone with her tastes (entitled Beeps, Bops, Boops of course) which I guess I’ll now have to send.

If anyone is interested in a copy as well, please let me know.

Also, Kenny’s party was quietly cancelled, so no hanging out with Japanese punk rockers and dock workers for me tonight I guess. Maybe its for the best; I’ve had a really hard week actually… there’s a ton of drama going down on practically every front… so at this point, I just want to chill at home and watch movies or play video games.

… So I stopped by Toys R Us earlier today, hoping that Shadow of the Colossus might be there, but alas, it was still nowhere (though its still the popular game on all the demo machines, which was like salt on the wound). I tried asking the sales people what the deal was, but you know how they can be: total fucking retards. You never get the same answer from anybody, because either the person doesn’t know what the fuck is going on or the person’s too goddamn lazy to exert the energy necessary to push a few some buttons and check the computer for info. I did see Soul Calibur 3, but I just really want SotC right now…

As for the rest of the weekend, I guess I’ll be hitting Miss and Kevin Colden’s Dorkaween party, which was a hoot last year. I’ll be there was Clark Kent of course, and MK as Lois Lane. And on Sunday, we might see a movie (maybe, and finally, MirrorMask). Then there’s the wedding on Monday, or course.

And here’s some real quick (gaming) odd & ends…

- Back to Shadow of the Colossus, here’s another video ripped from the Japanese pre-order bonus, and once again, its pretty amazing: check out Ico as it originally looked on the PSone!

- Plus take a look at the new Doom RPG.

- Check out this totally hot limited edition shirt commemorating the 20th anniversary of Space Harrier. From Japan, of course:

Very Rez-ish. And since I missed out on the shirts for that game, I’m tempted to pick this one up, even with the $60 price tag.

- Finally, on a Halloween note, check out Vitamin Steve’s costume from fifteen years ago.

… One last bit of news, from the real world: its just been revealed that George Takei (that’s Mr. Sulu to you and me) is gay. To any diehard Takei, such as my myself (and Jason), this news was a shocker, but it also made total sense. Anyway, it sparked the followed conversation between coworker Steve and a student:

Steve (taking to me): Hey Matt, did you hear? George Takei is gay!

student: Really? I wish I knew Star Wars. Who was he?

Steve: Its not Star Wars, but Star Trek. You know with Kirk & Spock.

student: Captain Kirk! Wasn’t that Professor X?

I will admit that Steve & I both laughed our nerdy asses off, perhaps a bit too much, at that one.

Oldies, But Goodies

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

Everyone is sick, at least at work. I guess its that bird flu that’s going around. But I’m not, thankfully. Am I doing anything different? No. First off, none of this bird flu scare has stopped me from eating chicken sandwiches. On a semi-related note, I really wish people around here would stop taking advice from Channel 9 News, who seem to exaggerate everything that happens. Though if you want your newscast to include interviews with pro-wresters, stories about babies blowing up, “hilarious” footage from a 7-11 robbery gone awry, and warnings as to why baby powder, Dr Pepper should not be mixed, and a reports as to how “hot” mp3 players are these days, plus you absolutely need to know exactly when these stories will be airing, down to the exact minute, then its for you.

But also, have I taken my flu shot? No, and I don’t intend to. Every year there’s some flu epidemic that sweeps NYC and ever year I’m totally immune, despite not taking the shot, and I don’t intend to jinx things, especially now when I have a big weekend coming up. Katie’s coming to the city and staying over for the weekend, plus there’s the costume wedding on Halloween.

Like every year, I’m confident I’ll be flu-free this season. I guess that’s a fair trade off for all the stomach problems I have…

Some real quick video game related bits & pieces:

- As mentioned previously, folks who pre-ordered Shadow of the Colossus were luck enough to receive some really neat bonus, including a shirt and a DVD. Well someone’s managed to rip the Nico preview vid from it, and posted it here. And trust me on this one, it’s well worth the download.

- And here’s another video of Project Gotham Racing 3′s Chinatown/Brooklyn track, this time featuring the photo mode. Once again, its finally nice to see a game that truly screams next-gen and validates some of the 360 promise.

- Sticking with racing, its been revealed that the upcoming Sega Rally 2006 for the PS2 will include the original arcade (Model 2) version emulated. Sound great…. I just hoped its not as messed up as their Virtua Fighter 2 release from earlier in year.

- Plus check out this video for Trackmania Sunrise Extreme. It’s fucking insane… Man, I hope this gets a next-gen console port.

- So Sony is now actively asking for new game ideas from both professionals and amateurs via open auditions. Interesting.

- There’s now an English version of Hideo Kojima’s blog. Also, its been revealed that his upcoming collaboration with Frank Miller (Metal Gear Solid BDis nothing more than an interactive comic for the PSP. Bummer.

- 1UP recently published this terrific look at the past 13 years of Treasure. After all these years, and I’ve yet to encounter anyone who’s every played Ragugaki Showtime. And GunBeat sounds like a spiritual successor to Virtua Hamster. I think its about time to whip out this picture yet again…

- Spike TV’s Video Game Award nominees for this year have been revealed. I love how for best action game, two of the nominees aren’t even out yet. I also love how Carmen Electra is once again involved in yet another televised video game award ceremony. Seriously what the fuck does she do aside from appearing at such shitty things?!?!?! Is that literally how she makes a living?

- For you King of Fighters fans out there, here’s a new trailer for part XI. it’s all about DREAMCANCEL.

- And for those of you who enjoy video games mixed with fine art (and Rubix cubes), here’s everything all mixed together.

- And for those of you who enjoy video games mixed with creepy sex art, check out this Dig Dug-sex-type thing.

- Played We Love Katamari for a good while last night, so I’m in a Katamari mood, plus it being Halloween and all, what better time for this….

Meanwhile, elsewhere on the web…

- Here’s another Halloween-related-thing; some guy’s AT-AT costume

- As mentioned a short while ago, I’ll be dressing up as Superman, still in his Clark Kent garb. Which reminded me of those of old Superman covers from years past. This one still has to be my all time fave…

But this one’s pretty hot too.

- I know you can find them virtually anywhere, but here’s another collection of crazy album art from the past. My favorites…

- Time for more “art”: if you’re from San Fransisco and love Jell-O, rejoice

- And time for random video from the web: first up, here’s some poor Japanese kid being constantly bothered by some overzealous Power Rangers.

- Joe pass this along last night; a music vid featuring Skeletor and Beast Man.

- And this is just really stupid.

It’s really been a while since I’ve fucked around the web, looking for stupid shit. It’s great to be home again.
