Oh Well

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

So yeah, this weekend…. things have changed. Katie’s not swinging by NYC as originally planned, which totally bites. I was looking forward to playing tour-guide to all the genuinely cool spots during the day, and then screen Taste of Bread, Karate Ruler, and all the other bizarre movies and shows from my massive collection of weirdness all throughout the night. Plus I had just put the final touches on a mix CD which is custom made for someone with her tastes (entitled Beeps, Bops, Boops of course) which I guess I’ll now have to send.

If anyone is interested in a copy as well, please let me know.

Also, Kenny’s party was quietly cancelled, so no hanging out with Japanese punk rockers and dock workers for me tonight I guess. Maybe its for the best; I’ve had a really hard week actually… there’s a ton of drama going down on practically every front… so at this point, I just want to chill at home and watch movies or play video games.

… So I stopped by Toys R Us earlier today, hoping that Shadow of the Colossus might be there, but alas, it was still nowhere (though its still the popular game on all the demo machines, which was like salt on the wound). I tried asking the sales people what the deal was, but you know how they can be: total fucking retards. You never get the same answer from anybody, because either the person doesn’t know what the fuck is going on or the person’s too goddamn lazy to exert the energy necessary to push a few some buttons and check the computer for info. I did see Soul Calibur 3, but I just really want SotC right now…

As for the rest of the weekend, I guess I’ll be hitting Miss and Kevin Colden’s Dorkaween party, which was a hoot last year. I’ll be there was Clark Kent of course, and MK as Lois Lane. And on Sunday, we might see a movie (maybe, and finally, MirrorMask). Then there’s the wedding on Monday, or course.

And here’s some real quick (gaming) odd & ends…

- Back to Shadow of the Colossus, here’s another video ripped from the Japanese pre-order bonus, and once again, its pretty amazing: check out Ico as it originally looked on the PSone!

- Plus take a look at the new Doom RPG.

- Check out this totally hot limited edition shirt commemorating the 20th anniversary of Space Harrier. From Japan, of course:

Very Rez-ish. And since I missed out on the shirts for that game, I’m tempted to pick this one up, even with the $60 price tag.

- Finally, on a Halloween note, check out Vitamin Steve’s costume from fifteen years ago.

… One last bit of news, from the real world: its just been revealed that George Takei (that’s Mr. Sulu to you and me) is gay. To any diehard Takei, such as my myself (and Jason), this news was a shocker, but it also made total sense. Anyway, it sparked the followed conversation between coworker Steve and a student:

Steve (taking to me): Hey Matt, did you hear? George Takei is gay!

student: Really? I wish I knew Star Wars. Who was he?

Steve: Its not Star Wars, but Star Trek. You know with Kirk & Spock.

student: Captain Kirk! Wasn’t that Professor X?

I will admit that Steve & I both laughed our nerdy asses off, perhaps a bit too much, at that one.

If you listen to Howard Stern the clips they played of Takei certainly gave hints to his potential gayness. When I heard a character I assumed it was him and I was right.
