I Walked Through The Valley Of The Shadow Of Orpah: New York Comic Con & Super Week 2014 Part 2

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

All right, this is it; after a near month long interruption, it’s time at least for a nice long look at New York Comic Con 2014! And first thing’s first, what I consider to be the highlight of NYCC each and every year, that being cosplay.

It used to be the highlight of PAX, but as the years go by, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find anything that piques my interest. Which only makes sense really; as my taste stray further and further away from the gaming’s mainstream, I’m going to increasingly confused or flat out bored by what the kids are dressing up these days.

Whereas NYCC encompasses pop culture as a whole, and given that stuff like Guardians of the Galaxy is now part of the mainstream, there is PLENTY to gawk at. Helping things even further is that New Yorkers are an extremely diverse bunch, who also have high standards. Slapping on Spock ears and that’s it ain’t gonna cut it.

K, enough talk, on with the spectacle. First up: Spider-Man has had countless different suits over the year, and here’s someone dressed as perhaps my fave of the bunch (next to his Future Foundation duds)…

Sticking with Spidey for a bit, here we have Spider-Ham donning the black symbiote suit…

Perhaps you’ve seen the Spider-Man/Captain America mash-up, hailing from Deviant Art, that was all the rage not long ago. It’s a safe bet this person saw it as well…

Equally brilliant is this Thor/Ronald McDonald mash-up…

Am legit shocked that I’ve never seen a Wolverine/Boba Fett mash-up before…

Another, more canonical take on Logan, as Weapon X…

Though there was another Marvel Universe personality known for having metal wrapped around his head who got even more play, along with his cohorts; Guardians of the Galaxy cosplay was EVERYWHERE…

You also had the star of next year’s Avengers 2 on hand…

Along with the star of… whenever the heck Doctor Strange comes out…

Now, when it came to both the Marvel Universe and gender bending, Captain America (and the Winter Solider) was the most popular, hands down…

Yet there were plenty of ladies who also did DC Comics as well…

Time for cute comics couples!

And the sweetest father/daughter combo of the entire show…

When most people think of Nick Fury, they think of the Ultimates/MCU version, but there was at least one old school iteration present…

Like many others, I prefer the Elseworlds versions of Superman, and aside from the Red Son variant, am also a huge fan of Kingdom Come take of Kal-El…

Sorry, but since I grew up with the character, I actually dig Mr Sinister’s goofy design…

The best/most essential part of any Thanos cosplayer is, of course, dat chin…

Beta Ray Bill is wondering if he’ll be in the new Thor movie that was just announced…

Time for more mash-ups, this time with video games in the mix, like the Joker as the star of the next Assassin’s Creed

Link X CM Punk anyone? BTW, same dude said was also going to be Big Boss X CM Punk later that weekend, which if he was, I totally missed (hopefully he’ll do it again next year)…

Spider-Man and Captain America as luchadores…

Will end things, for now, with a simple bit of truth: Sensational Sherri >>>>>>> Miss Elizabeth…

… That’s it for now! But trust me, there’s PLENTY more to come. Like tomorrow to be exact.
