They Might Be Giants: The Video Game (Kinda)

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

So I’m not going to meet the creator of Mega Man, Keji Inafune, as originally planned later tonight after-all. Long story short, I was supposed to stop by the Gamestop on 33rd and Broadway where he’ll be on-hand for the launch of the new Mega Man DS title Star Force, which is part of Mega Man’s 20th Anniversary celebration, and ask a few questions, but at the last minute, those plans were scrapped. Quite the bummer.

But I’m still on-track to check out Soul Calibur 4 and Katamari 4 (I’m counting the PSP version as a proper sequel and not a spin-off) tomorrow! I’ll try to pass along impressions as soon as I can afterwards.

Anyhow, it’s been a crazy time for games in general. And as I’ve mentioned about a thousand times already, I myself have never been busier, so keeping abreast of everything is quite the challenge. I just found out that the latest game from Masaya Matsuura… the game designer behind PaRappa and UnJammer, and creator of Vib Ribbon… has a new game coming out, and its for the iPod of all god damn things. Though as Dave (Mauro) pointed out, it doesn’t necessarily sound like the most exciting thing in the world.

The other big game news (at least to someone with my tastes) is that the trailer to the next Geometry Wars game, Galaxies, has been released, and how the game prominently features the They Might Be Giants song, Particle Man. Take a look!

Hey, I’m just happy that Geometry Wars is coming out for another system, both the Wii and the DS specifically. There goes yet another small reason to get the Xbox 360. I’m not going buying mine till they get the kinks out, which at this point, might be never.

Anyway, meanwhile at work, its finally my turn to play with the company iPhone! So what am I going to do with it? I’m gong to try and install that NES emulator, of course. Hopefully I won’t destroy it or something. Also, I’m gonna check and see if I have enough Legos lying around to create my own Guitar Hero controller (I used Legos in my game design class when it came to level design exercises).

I was also thinking of seeing Peelander-Z tonight, since there’s no Inafune-san (hey, I had to say it at least once) tonight, but I’ll be totally honest; the main reason why I wanted a scheduled appointment with the man and not stand in line with all his other fans is because it’s too damn hot outside! I’m still going to try to interview him, but it’ll have to be later down the road. I still need to know his answer to the eternal question: which one is better, Mega Man 2 or 3.

Answer is 3 obviously. Mega Man 2 is FUCKING AMAZING. Yet, Mega Man 3 is FUCKING AMAZING, BUT EVEN MORE SO.

Oh, and I hate to constantly bring up my totally awesome message board yet again, but I recently posted MK’s Harry Potter/TMBG/Conan the Barbarian/Faulty Towers/Voltron fan-fiction, and it is quite simply some amazing shit, I kid you not. That and the virgin thread keeps on going and going and going…
