Chicken Party, Just A Dollar

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

The next few weeks are gonna be crazy (there’s a zine that needs finishing up, plus other business), so I figured that this might be a good time, my only time, to share some random pics from the past couple of months that have all fallen through the cracks for whatever reason. Like Old Snake taking a smoke break…

Hey, remember Hideo Kojima’s return to NYC, and how he brought with him UNIQLO’s Metal Gear 25th Anniversary line? Well here it is (or was)…

Shockingly, the design I really wanted, which I figured was a Japanese exclusive, was available! So of course I had to pick one up in my size…

Plus this one as well…

Also got another cardboard box design, this time in red (I still have the blue one, from Kojima’s first visit, but it’s either too big or too small to wear, I forget)…

Here’s a snapshot I took as I was going either to or fro a New York Asian Film Fest screening, near Japan Society, where there’s Japanese convenience stores that also rent movies. Hopefully Dog X Police will be shown next year…

Speaking of Japan, I always love hearing from my homie Hide, whom I became aquatinted with when gallivanting in his part of the world oh so many years ago

Though let’s not forget my homie Adam. Who also has impeccable taste in music…

Speaking of best buds, here’s a pic of Raina with her dog Merlin at the dog friendly bar in Williamsburg we’d all hang out with, when she was here this summer…

And this is Murray, the latest edition to Rob & Michele’s household, whom I finally got to meet not too long ago…

Here we have the George Washington Bridge, all lit up and looking mighty pretty. I forget what the occasion was…

But I definitely remember when this other pic was taken, and why; was to commemorate five whole years of living in Washington Heights, the longest I’ve ever been anywhere in NYC. Can’t believe how I used to move literally once a year. There’s a reason why I’ve stuck around for so long; it’s simply awesome up here…

One primary reason why I love my neighborhood is all the wonderful cuisine that can be found…

Okay, the chicken party, whatever the hell that might be, I’ve never had. But I can definitely vouch for the burrito truck that can be found by the 1 train station, especially around 3am…

Sticking with food, here’s a favorite of mine: Menkui Tei’s curry ramen…

And here we have Takejiro Sendai miso ramen, a very limited engagement dish that was being serving at Mitsuwa, when they had a food fair happening the other weekend…

I always love stopping by the Japanese bookstore next door, to check out the magazine rack. They don’t stock as many game rags as they used to, which is fine, since I’m now more into Japanese men’s’ magazines…

Back to UNIQLO; I understand that there are now locations across the country. Hope they all have awesome displays, at least comparable to the ones we have here…

This was like the brightest subway train ever (it was one of those maintenance trains, but in the afternoon for some reason, which was super odd; super noisy too)…

A few weekend backs, I hung out with Colleen in Brooklyn, and we eventually found ourselves in Sunset Park, near where I used to live. There are a lot more cats living on my block now then back in the day…

The tattoo shop around the corner accepts Walkens…

A regular part of my job is attending press events, which often takes place in ritzy hotels. And most have the most garish, asinine, and flat out decor imaginable. Check out the crap that was hanging on the walls of this penthouse suite; the room easily costs $2,500-3,000 a single night, so it’s clear what takes place here normally…

Though the past few press junkets have been on a much grander scale, like Microsoft’s Windows 8 launch, in which they built an entire city that was dubbed Microtropolis, which you could walk around. Because nothing makes the experience of handling wannabe iPads better than pretending that you’re Godzilla…

That same week was the big unveil of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2. And, I must admit, its drawing tools are pretty damn awesome…

Though the main event was the performance from Kanye West. Which I almost blew off; was way later in the evening, and I’m not the biggest fan of the guy. But Raina insisted that I stay, and I’m glad I did. He played his greatest hits, and some of them are undeniably catchy, plus the dude knows how to perform live…

This is what Halloween in my building looks like…

You know what makes Halloween extra special, here in NYC? Cable access of course…

I only got the chance to go to one party this year; my pal Dustin‘s Heavenly Halloween…

Unfortunately, I missed out on the punch (which I heard was to die for, literally), but at least I got to hear from the big guy himself…

I forget her name, but this girl’s Master Shake outfit was pretty fab…

The highlight of the evening was watching Dustin deal with this drunken douchenozzle who claimed to be God and who was hardly apologetic for all the PBR he spilled on the kitchen floor, practically on purpose…

This is from a Friday night, which was spent celebrating the long-awaited arrival of the Dr. Steve Brule DVD (which I had pre-ordered over a year ago, no joke) and Retro City Rampage

And I took under the guise of Hurricane Sandy preparedness, though it was mostly a cheap way to show the word that I had in my possession advance press copies of Assassin’s Creed 3 and Halo 4

Once I began to realize that the storm was actually serious business, I began forming an actual preparedness kit, mostly in anticipation of losing power…

Thankfully I was spared the worst, but as previously noted, ended up crashing at Joe and June‘s, due to lack of internet, plus we had actual Halloween plans coming up anyway and figured we may as well pre-party. Unfortunately, this year’s festivities were muted, and not just because of Sandy; all of us had been too busy to properly prepare. October was a huge sale month for Wax Eye, which looked mighty successful from my end. Though June was able to whip something up at the last minute, with the help of a mask she picked up when we were in Japan…

And here we all are dancing to Phil Collins, believe it or not…

Since downtown was flooded, the parade was cancelled, so there went our yearly tradition. Instead we bar hopped in the Columbia University area. Here we are at the best seat you’ll find at the Ding Dong Lounge, the Ms. Pac-Man cocktail table…

… Time for a quick story: there was this girl who showed up at the bar who was incredibly cute, and who I absolute HAD to talk to, or at least try. But the place was super crowded and I couldn’t find her, even though the Ding Dong Lounge is fairly modest sized. I eventually decided to go to the bathroom, and as luck would have it, cute girl’s friend was waiting in line (she too pretty damn hot, yet lacked the super sexy glasses of the first girl). Tried striking up a conversation with the friend, for sh*ts and giggles, but as soon as I opened my mouth, the rest room immediately became available. Oh well.

So not even a minute passes by when this guy gets in line behind me. He asks how long I’ve been waiting, and I say not long at all. Then, cuz he’s a total sh*thead, the f*cker starts pounding on the door and screames “Come on, f*cking hurry up!!!” And of course, girl comes out thinking I was the one giving her sh*t, and chews me out by stating: “Hey a**hole, I had a f*cking corset on.” Swear to God, when it comes to women, my life is like an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm or Louie, take your pic (I’m told what happened is literally from the latter). Immediately afterward, said cute girl left the bar, mostly due to her pal being pissed…

Anyway, here’s Joe and June’s dog Lumi, later that evening, offering her condolences…

As well as their cat Blanche, just staring at me, cuz she’s a dumb fattie (but I still love her)…

The next morning, on our way to breakfast, we went through Morningside Park, which is near where they live. Even though days had passed, there were still signs of Sandy everywhere…

Much fun was had with Joe and June, though the absolute highlight was getting the original Clogged Arteries portrait that Joe did of me, oh so many years ago, and well before he became an official Garbage Pail Kids artist!

Yet another, purely petty thing to bitch about, as it pertains to Sandy, is how last weekend’s midnight screening of Miami Connection was cancelled. Been pimping that flick to all my friends like crazy. At least Eric finally checked out a way earlier recommendation of mine…

Once again, I love my friends on Twitter…

I also love NMA, aka the Taiwanese CGI news crew. Here they are, reporting on some form of female viagra that’s been developed down under…

Oh, and because they weren’t giving out stickers where I voted, this is all I have to show for performing my civic duty yesterday…

I don’t know why, but because I went at length the first time Obama was elected, I feel the need to say something here. But instead, I’m just going to quote what my pal Bit Shifter said on Facebook:

“All right Obama — good job and all that. Now it’s time to get serious and regrow a spine. Fuck drone strikes, fuck treating whistleblowing as a capital offense, fuck indefinite detention and the suspension of due process, fuck warrantless surveillance — the list goes on. You’ve got nothing to lose in a 2nd and final term, so let’s set this stuff right.”

Also, hopefully he can finally get the gears in motion to help the poor souls in Staten Island and other parts that were devastated by Sandy, and who still haven’t gotten an ounce of help, even nine days later (and who are now suffering again, thanks to the nor ‘eastern that’s hitting this city right now).

Anyhow, time for one last pic…

Asif put it best as “the Jedi Temple of independent game development and research.” To pledge your support as well, cuz you know you want to… no, cuz you know you NEED to… simply follow this link.

Part one covered vinyl toys, figures, statues, stuff like that. Part two was all about video games, apparel, original artwork, and evertything in between.

So time for part three, which is about one thing and one thing only. Behold Teddie, the very first cosplay pic I took at New York Comic Con 2012…

Mega Man was well represented this year, and in various flavors, but X here was easily the most bad ass…

I love this guy, dressed as Kage-Maru from Virtua Fighter. Dude was super adamant that everyone knew how to say his character’s name correctly…

Sonic here, he was a super cool bro…

Not that Travis Touchdown or Bad Girl from No More Heroes is the most common sight, but they get around. Whereas Mimmy is especially rare…

Man, I really wish we had Viewtiful Joe 3, don’t you?

Perhaps the most awesome assortment of Street Fighter cosplayers that I’ve ever personally encountered…

Am happy that Noob Saibot’s popular again, thanks to the most recent installment of Mortal Kombat. Am also glad that the guy as smoke has decided not to copy the goofy new hairstyle from the same game…

Not far away was Scorpion with his spear in mid-motion…

Though the winner was clearly Sub-Zero…

I’ve had more than my fair share of Marios, but I can’t recall ever seeing someone as a Piranha Plant…

I absolutely love this black girl as NiGHTS…

Well, that’s one way to cosplay as Okami…

Found Dr. Wily, mulling about the D-Arts Mega Man figures, shockingly…

Believe it or not, there was quite a few Bastion cosplayers at the show! Here’s just one…

I really like it when people feel comfortable with themselves enough to cosplay, no matter the body type. Though it obviously helps if one’s physique is perfect for the role, like Sweet Tooth here…

Captain Olimar here was fairly rad…

As was this Pikmin couple, especially how they shut their own eyes for maximum effect…

No idea why none of these Links was wearing green. But no complaints here…

Again, it’s not often you see Oregon Trail depicted…

If I have to bitch about NYCC 2012, as it pertains to cosplay specifically, it would be anemic degree of Touhou Project representation. At least we got this…

In my book, more abstract the costume, the better. Like this girl who simply went as Duck Hunt, the entire game…

Fun-fact: Link is dating Chell, and here he is holding her Portal gun while she goes to the bathroom (that’s the actual story behind this pic)…

Moving on to excellent examples of non-game related costumes; this dude’s Macross get-up was totally boss…

It pisses me off that I forget the artist who’s the inspiration for this girl, given that I went to art school and everything…

Joel and the bots! BTW, has anyone ever cosplayed as Mike? Of course not, and that’s because Mike sucks!

Am a total sucker for handmade Iron Man suits…

And here we have another power couple, but from the DC Comics side of things…

I love how this guy’s Green Lantern get-up is about a zillion times better than what was in the film (clearly more time, money, and care was spent on it as well)…

It’s Doctor Doom with a pair of Sailor Scouts, for whatever reason…

Lady Lion-O…

Quorra’s outfit was very shiny…

Trust me, this guy (or girl) was way creepier in person…

Dave was not a fan of this particular interpretation of Hermione Granger (he hates how cosplay is becoming all scary and grotesque these days), but I thought it was nice and different…

There was a surprising number of Back To The Future cosplayers at the show (which I’m not complaining about, btw)…

This dude as Marty was simply the best, mostly due to his totally spot-on Michael J. Fox mannerisms…

I loved this guy and his pals on Sesame Street

How about this for a boyfriend/girlfriend get-up: Pinocchio and Stromboli…

Though I prefer mismatched couples more, like Leelo and Louis Tully…

Every year, this guy with the homemade Bumblebee suit shows up. And don’t get me wrong, it’s impressive! But I’ve also taken his pic about 50 times already, so here’s a nice back/crowd shot…

Speaking of Transformers, guess who I ran into in the artists alley…

Best approach to Leela I’ve seen thus far…

Meet lady Robocop (or Ms. Robocop, not sure which, if either)…

Alright, I know the following is going to piss some people off, even friends, but I can’t keep it in any longer: I kinda can’t stand Homestuck. Hey, I love bullsh*t insane stupidity on the internet, to a considerable degree, but it’s seriously the line in the sand for me.

So needless to say, this crowd of Homestuck cosplayers watching members of their own, act out favorite moments from the strips, or animated gifs, or whatever was more horrific than amusing (wasn’t able to get close enough, though to be totally honest, I didn’t try all that hard)…

Even though I thought the Woody Harrelson alien in Promethus was hella stupid, along with the rest of the movie, this guy’s take on him was mighty impressive…

Another movie that I didn’t like at all was The Dark Knight Rises, but at least it gave fat/bald dudes someone to be as well (this Bane was my fave, entirely due to the fact that he actually made his head gear, whereas everyone else’s was store bought)…

I came across not just one Dr. Slump…

… But two. Which do you prefer?

Spotted two different dudes as Master Roshis as well, but was only able to get this one…

Anyone who is familiar with previous cosplay rundowns is well aware of my affinity of candid, out of characters shots. And while not nearly as exciting as Solid Snake at the ATM or Captain American ordering a hot dog, Cobra Commander trying to use an iPad is still pretty funny in book…

Here’s a penguin, just chillin…

By far, the cutest couple of the entire weekend was Raggedy Andy and Anne…

Though overall, my favorite cosplayers might have been this Big Trouble In Little China lovin’ crew…

Last but not least, Raina with this absolutely terrifying bird headed super hero from self published comic that someone was trying to promote…

And is that it? That’s it. Unfortunately, there was one extra special cosplayer that I wish I had gotten a picture of, but simply had a brain fart and didn’t react fast enough. Which often happens when you see something truly mind-blowing.

In this case, it’s the one that’s been one mentioned in the title; there was cute as a button hipster chick with a Hitler mustache and a shirt that said “Death CampFor Cutie”. Trust me, you simply had to see it. But you can’t cuz I dun goofed! Sorry about that.

Okay, so where were we? Why yes… the New York Comic Con 2012! Part one was all about toys and figures and stuff like that. And part two is about… lots of things actually.

Let’s start with something that’s more or less a given at such things: every year I swing by both the DC and Marvel booths to see what the heck is going on in their respective worlds, too see now might be the time to jump back in into super hero comics.

But the end result is always the same: total confusion. For example, can anyone please explain to me why Iron man now sports gold and purple armor? Is Tony Stark officially a pimp?

Nearby was Thor. Actually, the Thor wax dummy from Madame Tussaud…

And standing almost directly across was Lego Gandalf…

With Lego Bilbo Baggins…

Here’s Maury photobombing Maury (and friends)…

As previously noted, many pals of mine were at show (all of whom worked the entire time). Like Joe, who was either signing stuff or doing Garbage Pail Kids sketch cards at the Topps booth for pretty much all four days…

Topps had plenty of cool goodies, like John Pound‘s original of Adam Bomb…

They were also pimping Wacky Packs, which I never got into, including a few game related examples…

Back to GPK; one of the highlights of the artists alley was Mark Pingitore, who had both finished cards…

And the original artwork for sale as well…

Another way that Ping pays the bills is by doing commissions for Garbage Pail Kids fanatics. Mostly mish-mashes of pop culture references that, would never get the stamp of approval from Topps lawyers, often make little sense to being with. But hey, if the client’s money is good…

Here’s one for someone who really liked the Goonies, which Ping was selling reproductions of…

Not far down was Bob Camp, of Ren & Stimpy fame! The show was a HUGE influence on me as a kid, so it was nice to shake the hands of one of its primary architects. He also had a few cels for sale, which I almost picked up…

Along with some of the gorgeous, gross-out painted close-up shots…

Remember that one piece of fan art, featuring Princess Leia taking her bottom off and Han Solo looking out, like a total creeper, while in outer space? Didn’t get much of a reaction the first time I posted it, so here it is again…

Moving on, let’s talk video games. Among the big boys, I was happy to see Darkstalkers get some love, after all this time…

Whereas Mega Man remains completely forgotten. Despite it being his 25th anniversary, Capcom could less about the little blue guy, but at least you could get air fresheners a few booths down…

Naturally, there were a few used/vintage/import game dealers on hand. And among all the overpriced SNES games, alongside consoles that now sport piss yellow plastic, was this sole legitimately interesting find: a N64 rom burner/reader, and for just $600…

One of the more unknown publishers was this outfit from China. Notice anything familiar with the logo? Think it’s kinda lame? Yeah, me too…

Though I was more than happy to run into the MangaGamers booth, which was selling hard copies of the various visual novels that they translate. Including my personal favorite, Go! Go! Nippon! which I swear to God is not hentai but a travelogue…

So across the way, right next to the gigantic, inflatable Jake and Finn…

Was the ShiftyLook arcade. Basically, it was filled with old, super obscure Namco titles that they’re trying to breath new lift into, via web comics. Interesting business plan to say the least…

Basically, all the classic games are housed in brand new cabinets that feature updated artwork, by whomever is illustrating the new comic…

Many of the games are completely oddball and totally charming, at least on a purely aesthetic level…

Though as Raina discovered, alongside myself, there’s a reason why these games faded away into obscurity; most were not fun to play at all…

You had more contemporary titles as well, like Pac-Man Battle Royale, which Mario here was totally killing…

At the booth, you could also buy merch relating to various Namco games, with the ShiftyLook make over…

Along with this rather stylish Galaga tee, which I’m now kicking myself for not picking up…

Semi-related: check out this awesome Star Wars: The Arcade Game tee from Super 7…

So when I posted Lamar‘s brand new Seibei shirt on Tumblr, it immediately blew up like crazy. And for good reason; it’s f’n rad…

Yet another super swell discovery at this year’s NYCC was the work of Jason Laurits. His photo collage shirts and prints were simply too awesome…

Around the corner was this booth manned by totally Williamsburg hipster chicks, who had a few neat things, like this arcade tee…

… But when I tried asking them about it, and how the show was going was for them, got a total “God I hate this show and all the f’n nerds here” vibe, which is so classy for a number of reasons. So yeah, great shirt, lousy attitude.

Pro-tip: if you think you’re the very first to come up with a shirt that cashes in on an internet meme… you’re actually probably not…

Again, forget the name, but this table selling old, vintage pulp novels had some really nice offerings. Am pissed at myself for not picking up Six-Gun Heritage when I had the chance…

Storm Trooper and child…

Speaking of, owning your own R2-D2 would be neat and all, but R5-D4 is the most baller…

NYCC is where yesterday’s stars try their best to make a buck today, one $40 autograph at a time…

NYCC is also where people who think they’re stars, like from the world of YouTube, try to their best to shine, like Miss Hannah Minx. I don’t think I’ve met a single person, particularly women, who have seen her guide to Asian emoticons and not vomit in their mouths immediately afterward…

One of the few highlights of my last tour of duty back home was discovering Face/Off on SyFy. It’s basically a reality game show among those aspiring to be make-up artists in Hollywood. Like America’s Got Talent, except everyone has actual talent. Anyhow, one of the finalists was on hand…

Gotta love the bizarre mishmash of worlds at Comic Con. Like Buffy The Vampire Slayer and… cars?

As also mentioned before, I didn’t get the chance to catch a single solitary panel. But, I did get to watch Dave‘s Comics Quickfire. Basically audience members are paired with professional cartoonists to produce a comic on the spot, and the audience chooses which is the best. Additional pics, including how the comics this time around turned out, can be seen here

Check out these social media propaganda posters by Aaron Wood

Dude also does posters related to gaming…

Ladies and gentleman, Neon Genesis Evangelion chopsticks…

Perhaps the hottest pieces of crap going among animu dorks this year was these cat ears that supposedly reacts to the wearer’s brainwaves. Though everyone I saw wearing one (which, sadly, was everywhere) had their ears with mind of their own, just spinning with zero rhyme or reason. Which, come to think of it, probably means that they were working as advertised…

And finally, easily the biggest highlight of the entire weekend: I got to meet my personal hero, in the flesh, Mr. Danny Choo. To say he is a God among nerds is a vast understatement. Anyhow, what a cool guy!

K, have saved the best for last; cosplay! Due sometime on Monday.
