I Want My Gel TV

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

- Last night was another opening at SVA, and another one to feature Marion’s work. So I just hung out with her and John, chatting and drinking wine. Found out that Marion hates Ghosts n’ Goblins… I mean she REALLY hates that game. And I have to admit, I’m not a big fan of it either; my disdain for games that I want to like but can’t due to an insane difficulty isn’t just due to current titles like Devil May Cry 3, and G’n'G has always been way too fucking hard.

- Its Tuesday and you know what that means? New DVDs come out today, and there’s quite a few good ones to snag. First up is the Garbage Pail Kids Movie which many (okay, maybe just Joe and I) have been waiting to hit DVD. I saw it just once when I was a kid and recall it being quite fucking horrible. I’m certain they only showed it once on television… one has to assume that the Movie Channel got so many angry phone-calls and letters that they had no choice but to burn the film.

Then there’s the Bill & Ted’s Most Excellent Collection.

But if there’s only going to be one thing you get, make sure its the DVD of the year; Rubber Johnny finally comes out today.

Anyone who’s familiar with the work of Chris Cunnigham already knows about it, but for those who don’t, all you need to know is that its about a about a malformed mutant who’s confined in the basement, yet manages to rock out. You can find out more info here.

Or if you have the patience, and the bandwidth, you can see the whole film right here. At first I was hesitant about giving away the whole thing, but I’m confident that you’ll want to rush and get the thing on DVD for yourself and all your friends.

I myself will not only be picking the DVD up but checking out the East Coast premiere later tonight at Lincoln Center, which is playing alongside Police Beat.

- Oh, and the PSP is getting even more movies as well, such as You Got Served.

- Yesterday on the GAF, someone pointed to a site that has tons of pic of console mods. Some are quite nice (and some are pretty damn cheesy… keep an eye out for the Kill Bill PS2… neat idea I guess but crappy execution).

And then I started looked around elsewhere and came across this: a GameCube in an AT-AT mod.

- And yesterday I also mentioned the Ikaruga shirt that’s finally happened. Well recently Sega revealed a special shirt to commemorate the release of the new Sonic Gems Collections. Its of Sonic the Hedgehog… drowning. Sorta neat actually.

- I never mentioned this when it first broke, but not too long ago a hacker “discovered” some unused code for a sex minigame in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. It seems that there was going to be a part of the game where in-between all the drive by shooting, you could take your character to your girlfriend’s house “for some coffee”, which is basically you and your girl having sex in a variety of positions. You don’t have to look very far for patches to lock the portion for the PS2, PC, and Xbox version, and if you want to see pics and even a video, simply go here.

Anyhow, as soon as the parental watchdogs group caught wind of this, they went totally nuts, demanding the game be pulled off of shelves everywhere, stating that the game should be re-classified as “Adults Only” (the game currently has the USRB rating of “Mature”). So, get this, now Rockstar is claiming that the mod is the work of hackers by altering the source code and that they are not responsible for the content whatsoever. Which, of course, is total and complete total bullshit. Yeah, I love how these hackers supposedly did all the coding themselves. And the scripting. And the modeling. And the textures. And the sound effects. And the voice acting.

I love no matter how edgy Rockstar makes themselves out to be, they’re just all corporate pussies in the end.

- Here’s a site that has a pic of almost every Famicom clone ever produced.

- And here’s a Flicker dedicated to classic handheld games.

BTW, not to go off topic, but have I ever mentioned how annoying Flicker is quickly becoming? Its become the latest device for hipsters to flaunt their coolness and egos. Instead of having nothing really interesting to say as with the case with blogs, now they have nothing really interesting to show, and conversely, instead of saying dumb and vapid things, Flicker just encourages them to do it for the sake of documentation and for, you guess it, “ART!”

Case in point: some uber trend-doids who thought it would be humorous to dress up as zombies and give a gang of dorks that like to ply D&D in the park a hard time. Yeah, that “sounds” cool, but honestly, there is nothing scary about a zombie with horn rimmed glasses. Plus like all hipsters, they managed to take a great idea and make it seem totally pretentious and boring.

For those of you who are asking where I get off criticizing others, well you can just forget about it. Once again, yes, I have a blog, but at least I’m able to acknowledge the simple fact that they are often nothing more than devices to boost one’s ego. Sorta like how I’m goofing on complete strangers on the internet…. hey, at least I provide a wealth of video game related as well.

- Back on the topic of games, is this a game? Maybe, maybe not… but its sorta fun, that is if controlling a perpetually falling (and spineless) woman is your idea of fun.

- Want further evidence that Japanese are pure geniuses when it comes to television commercials? All I can say is that I want my Gel TV.

- Also from Japan, I just found out about Densha Otoko, which is about otaku (hardcore Japanese nerd) on his quest to find love. I based upon real life anecdotes on message boards and I heard its pretty awesome.

There’s torrents of the show, which just recently premiered, available right now.

- So the new Harry Potter book comes out this Friday, which was a major point of conversation last night over dinner. Among the things discussed were psycho Potter fans, like the ones that hate the girl who plays Cho Chang in the upcoming film so much that they created a dedicated hate-listing site. as well as how the book comes out on Friday at midnight and how both John and Marion are worried that folks will have read the whole thing that very night be talking about it the very next morning, effectively spoiling it for them (they’ll both be at the San Diego Comic Con this weekend).

Anyway, while on my way to lunch, I passed by a UPS truck unloading stuff for the Barnes & Noble that’s around the corner from where I work and I noticed that they were in fact boxes with the new Harry Potter book. They were all white and completely covered by the HP logo in green with “Don’t not open this box until 7/16/05.”on the top. And I was totally tempted to run off with one of them… I even circled the building twice to see if the coast was clear… but there were just too many UPS goons hanging about. I guess I could have paid them off with $50 or something, but I wouldn’t be surprised if each box (or perhaps each copy of the book) has some microchip programmed to explode if exposed before the appropriate date. I actually just wanted to get ahold of copies for those who are worried about the same headache that John and Marion spoke off (and give them something to read on the plane)… sorry folks.

Also, when you get into it, I’m just not into petty theft, and I sure as hell did not want to be the first person to be caught stealing a box of new Harry Potter books.

- And finally, Flipnic finally comes out in the US tomorrow. Its gonna be the next “almost impossible to find niche title cuz almost no game stores, especially those in NYC, will bother to carry, leading me to run from one shop to another, get more and more frustrated as the day goes on” game for me. Can’t wait!

“Press the red button. Sun goes down.”

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

- Not too much to report from this past weekend; in Jersey MK & I did some light shopping, went bowling (I think each of us played our best games ever), cooked on the grill, and watched the very awesome Office Space on DVD (MK is now adamant about watching her big backlog of movies before going out and buying anymore…. something which I should seriously do the same with in regards to games). I would have probably enjoyed myself a whole lot more if not for the monster stomach ache I myself created with I foolishly ordered a huge of nachos plus a chocolate milkshake 2 in the morning at a diner.

Also the night before I had this totally awesome dream where I some show that was basically that crappy Ashton Kutcher show Punk’d but with Sylvester Stallone as the host. Plus all the victims were celebrity puppets like Alf and Yoda. One segment had Yoda going to auto shop to get this car looked at, but he was set up with a real idiot car mechanic, so when Yoda got frustrated and went underneath to take a look at the problem himself, the car lowered and he got pinned. And since all that moving with your mind Jedi-mindtrick stuff is all movie magical, Yoda was totally stuck and seriously pissed, and just the sight of that plus Sly jumping up and down in the background while laughing hysterically was pretty damn awesome.

- MK was also just pissed as I was by Fox’s recent decision to crap the original design for the Simpsons season 6 box which was going to look like all the other editions and instead go with this monstrosity:

Fox insists that it will fit alongside the other sets with no problems, but what about the huge stupid top of Homer’s head? And what the fuck are they going to do with the rest of the seasons? After Bart, Lisa, and the rest of the family, then what? I know Apu has his fans but… And why couldn’t they wait to do this type of gimmicking around season 9 or 10 when the show started to go downhill. Fuck.

But hey, at least there has some good DVD news in the past week: there’s going to be a Director’s Label series 2! This time around the featured video directors is Anton Corbin, Jonathan Glazer, Mark Romanek, and Stephane Sednaoui. Fuckin’ A! I’m especially excited about the Corbin collection, but I’ll be getting them all of course. And hopefully we’ll see even more collections later down the road, such as for Matt Mahurin, Josh Taft, and Peter Care.

Plus I also recently found out that Hey Mikey is getting a domestic release! So now everyone in America can enjoy the adventures of Mikey Fuccon, who besides being a total wiener, also happens to be a mannequin.

- I also picked up a game while in Jersey (of course). I managed to snag Shadow of Destiny, an extremely rare first-gen game for the PS2 from Konami. You play some guy who’s murdered and you have to go back in time over and over again to find out who did it, why, and to stop it from happening.

The best part about game shopping in Jersey is that there’s tons of ultra rare, hard to find games to be found all over the place. This time it was a Kay Bees Toy near MK’s house. There was actually multiple copies, but I figured I’d be a nice guy and tell the really cool kid working there that he should buy the guy since it goes for almost a hundred dollars on eBay. Some teenager working at a toy store could certainly use the money more than me.

- Also, right before I headed for Jersey, my copies of Sega Classics Collection and Border Down arrived in the mail. Played a bit of both last night… and it sure is nice to finally play a near arcade quality port of Virtau Racing at home (and about damn time). Though now that I’ve played it, I can see why there’s so much confusion as to what it’s based upon, the arcade or the 32X version; its a weird amalgamation of both. Plus, I love finally hearing original arcade music, the sound of the tires skidding is a bit excessive in my opinion (though perhaps true to its arcade roots, I’m not certain). Anyway, its the best home conversion of the game, besides the still brilliant Genesis version.

And Border Down is pretty cool thus far. I’ve been on a real shooter quick as of late, hence why I’m also looking at picking up Chaos Field (I was going to wait for the GameCube port but I found a not so expensive copy for the Dreamcast that’s tempting). I should ask Brian if Senko no Ronde is still on track for a DC release.

I also wonder if Brian caught the news on insert credit regarding the homemade Ikaruga shirts, which was announced over a year ago I think, but despite my best efforts, I was not able to get ahold of one (I honestly didn’t think they even came out since info was so scarce). Well, they will finally be made available via pre-order.

- Well I guess I’m finally caught up with all the gaming news that I’ve missed over the past few weeks. Perhaps the most interesting under the radar, at least for me, is the news that Nana On Sha, the studio helmed by Masaya Matsura and which is behind such games as PaRappa the Rapper and Vib Ribbon, is doing the DS Tamagotchi game. Many don’t know this yet, but Tamagochis is enjoying a massive resurgence in popularity right now, and many have predicted that such a game will give Nintendo the definitive lead over Sony’s PSP in their homeland (where both is pretty much in a neck-and-neck race).

BTW, hope no one minds the plug, but I suggest for any PaRappa fans out there to check out my interview with Rodney Greenblat on Gamasutra which (finally) came out last week.

- So here’s another reason why I’m glad I don’t have cable right now: that crappy music vids with game characters show, Video Mods, is back on the air with a second season. Here’s a few pics from a recent episode with the guys from Episode 3 game “rocking out”. Great. A shitty characters from a shitty game based on a shitty movie in a shitty show performing (presumably) shitty music.

- Here’s another old random pic, this one from the World Hobby Fair. I want that statue of the King of Cosmos in my house.

- And here’s the PS2 version of the chain-saw controller for the PS2 version of Resident Evil 4.

- Just found out that the DS version of Animal Crossing won’t have old NES games as unlockables. What? I was actually hoping that old Game Boy games would be the thing this time around; makes sense if you think about it, especially since you can’t play old GB games on the DS.

- And here’s another DS game to keep an eye out for: its Ouendan and its by the makers of Gitaroo Man. Basically, you’re part of a support group that goes out looking for folks in trouble, then cheer them on to help them overcome their obstacles. Yup, it’s a cheerleading game. You can check out the trailer here, plus check out scans from the latest Famitu here and here.

- This one if for Jason: crappy movies based on games isn’t exactly unique these days, but here one that’s not from Uwe Bolle. It’s a flick from last year called Gamebox and it stars the girl formerly known as Topanga from Boy Meets World. Plus it has a cameo by… Yakov Smirnoff? Cue obligatory “”In Soviet Russia, game plays you!” quote.

- Remember those Mario bottle-caps from Pepsi? Well now you can own everyone of them.

- Oh and here’s a really dumb music video featuring remixed Super Mario music.

Hey at least its better than that gay as hell video featuring those dumb white kids doing accapella version of old Nintendo tunes from a short whiles back that everyone went gay over; if you want to see for yourself, go find it yourself, I find it that stupid. Maybe a seeing two Korean salsa dancers dressed as Street Fighter characters might make you happy

- Here’s something much better: someone made a totally awesome remix from an old Sesame Street game for the NES, and here it is via web-cartoon form. Apologies in advance for getting the song stuck in your head for the next week or so.

- And for anyone familiar with SNL, this needs no explanation.

- Finally, remember how Steve Flack said that Entertainment Weekly was lifting content from my site? Well another person has said the same thing, but in regards to FHM. Well once again, its obviously because they have someone on staff who spends as much time looking for crap online as I do. Plus the idea of someone on their mag reading my site is not too far-fetched this time around so I do know a guy who works on the magazine (the same dude that’s hooked me up with the complimentary subscription that I currently enjoy… this month’s story on how to deal with a robot uprising is pretty neat btw). Though I have noticed a the curious use of the world “firecrotch” in the latest EGM as well. Hmmm…

Michael Jackson versus Mario AND Bowser

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

Last night was another game night at gameLab but I ended up not going. No real reason… guess I was in an anti-social mood. So I just headed home after work (and got caught in the torrential rain-pour… once again, I’m really hating the fucking weather in NYC this summer) to catch up with the rest of the gaming world. And, no surprise, I missed a lot. Some of it is pretty old, obviously but its new(s) to me…

- First off, remember the Sega Fantasy flash films? Well that same guy has created a new, this one centering on Michael Jackson verus the rest of the video game world, and it seriously one the greatest things ever. To click here is to be amazed.

- Yesterday saw the release of Everyone Love Katamari and virtually every single person who’s played it has nothing but glowing things to say. It seems that this time around things are even more fantastical, with not only regular everyday people and animals to roll up, but centaurs, pixies, and leprechauns. Also according to ukresistence: “The scope is bigger. For example, in the high school level you can travel from room to room and they all load as seperate areas allowing for a whole new level of… er… levels. The boys’ shower room has a fat old man trying to peer over the lockers at the boys changing. Every day the game designers show us they understand their demographic better and better” Sounds fantastic! And check out the awesome soundtrack cover art.

Unfortunately for me, I am unable to play import games (I wrote about why the other day) so its gonna be pure torture waiting for the game to hit the US in the fall, but hey, at least we’re getting it. Though I might just break down and pick up the soundtrack. I hear there’s a zoo level where every animal you pick has it singing the Katamari theme. Pure unadulterated genius.

- Meanwhile on these shores, the game everyone loves to hate, Killer 7, finally comes out today. I’ll probably be picking it up later this afternoon. And as I’ve said countless times before, I know its gonna suck, but that’s not the point. I just find the overall look and atmosphere irresistible.

And surprisingly, its not getting totally slaughtered by every single critic, at the least those who get the whole arty-farty appeal of it. I think Edge gave it pretty decent marks.

- Another quick Capcom related tid-bit: Resident Evil for the DS is in the works! Its apparently a remake of the first game, but would use the camera and controls of part 4. Interesting.

- The next wave of Sega Ages titles have been announced, with the most interesting being the Gunstar Heroes Treasure Box, which will include Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy, and Alien Soldier! If there’s any company that is totally entitles to pimp their back catalogue, its Treasure. The chances of a Radiant Silvergun just became a little more real (did you know its the very best shooter of all time, huh?).

Also coming out is Panzer Dragoon. It would be nice if it included part 2 and the RPG as well (and then come to the US). At least its a straight forward port with stupid enhancements like the first wave of Sega Ages games. BTW, since I once again can’t play imports, its been driving me nuts to look at my copy of Virtua Racing Flat Out just sitting around collection dust, so I broke down and bought the US release Sega Classics collection which included all the other shovelware-quality reduxes which I don’t even want to touch just so I could play VR, the only decent conversion. Though with this Treasure compilation, I might just have to break down and get Japanese PS2.

Plus I heard from someone who just got a recent Ages game and he says that there was a postcard that asked what games would people like to see come out next. Included on the list were Sega Touring Car and… DAYTONA USA!!! If there is a God…

- But Sega are the masters of creating disappointment, such as when they just announced that the Streets of Rage games which were supposed to be included on the upcoming Sonic Gems Collection will be taken out for the US release. Why? Cuz with them, it would not get the E rating which Sega strives for with each Sonic game. Then what the fuck are they going to do with Shadow the Hedgehog then? He’s carry a realistic pistol for Christ’s sake.

Also, the Japanese soundtrack will not be included, just the US one, cuz of… get this, licensing issues. But Sega created the music themselves! WTF? Just another sad example of Sega of America yanking everyone’s chain. Sorta like how they told everyone that Rez was getting a re-release that never happened. Don’t get me wrong, I actually love the Spencer Nielsen composed US tunes, but the Japanese soundtrack is fantastic as well, and I’d love to play the game with its originally intended music.

Plus, still no word of Knuckles Chaotix on the collection. And where the fuck is NiGHTS?

- Yet another reason to get a modded/import PS2? Kenka Banchou, a high school bully simulator. Granted, Rockstar is coming out with their own later this year (and it looks as it might have some real potential), but I’m certain it won’t have awesome eighties Japanese hair cuts. That and laser beams from people’s eyes.

Unfortunately, I heard that opening tutorial is pretty much impossible to those who don’t understand a lick of kanji.

- Though I really haven’t been keeping a super close eye on things, I do know the homebrew scene keeps making progress with the PSP, and DS as well. On the DS front, I saw some blurry pics of a SNES emulator floating around, plus there’s apparently much better methods of emulation on PSPs with the latest firmware, ones that don’t requiring swapping discs like one such iteration of the v1.5 workaround which required it. Though now I hear Sony is becoming increasingly aggressive towards those who seek to play pirated games on the PSP, and their action may hurt the homebrew scene the most, which are only really interested in playing older systems and even their own games on Sony’s machine.

Also, Nintendo is now also releasing updates to their Play-Yan media player, to allow MP4 playback, which I guess is good news. Though I still find Nintendo’s whole multimedia approach to be rather messy and un-sexy when compared to Sony, but hey, at least their focus is still games.

According to recent articles, movies for the PSP have topped the 100,000 mark. Know what’s sadder than the fact that there’s now 4 times as many movies as there as games for the system? How with the exception of a very few, most of the films are such total shit.

- I was also disappointed to discover that the Adventure Player Studio, a PSP release that allows you to create your own games which I believe I once mentioned, is unfortunately quite poorly written.

- Remember that site that lets you create GBA cases to match the DS cases? Well those same people are now making cases for N64 games. And better yet, I understand that coming soon will be DVD covers for Dreamcast, PSone, and Saturn games (which I’ll totally be doing since I had to get rid of my Saturn boxes due to my tiny dorm room in college).

- Here’s some more images from the upcoming Bone game, including the characters and locations. Given the amount of involvement from Jeff Smith (last I heard he’s handpicking the voice-actors himself) and that folks working on the game were previously doing the Sam & Max sequel before it got axes, I’m confident that in such capable hands the game will turn out to be rather good.

- Did you know there was supposed to be a disk drive for the Sega Master System? I didn’t either till I saw this.

- Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat, the impossible dream of an improbable fight, existing only in the minds of fanboys, right? Wrong, with the exception of the fanboy part. It’s actually happening, albeit in card format. Wow, a card game based on a fighting game.

- So I’m a pretty big fan of all the recent pixel Mario merchandising that’s going around, so this Mario mousepad sorta caught my eye.

I would have gotten it already if it didn’t look so damn uncomfortable. At least it seem to have some inherent use, unlike…

- Introducing the GameHand. According to the press release:

Zac Bandremer, a video game player for many years, had a problem. So did most of his friends, and presumably millions of other players around the world, as well. During intense video game play, hands would begin to slip on the smooth plastic controllers of their games, thereby affecting a player’s success, and ruining their fun. So Zac, along with his dad Scott, decided to do something about it. After experimenting with various materials, Zac and his dad have hit the bullseye.

“I take my video games seriously. I think most players do. With my dad’s help, we’ve come up with a radical looking glove that’s made with a super sticky palm that grips the controller like nothing else, and it looks really, really cool, too! All of my friends use it.”

With a worldwide potential market of tens of millions of people, and a price of under $20 a pair, Zac has big plans for the GameHand glove. GameHand currently is offered in three color combinations (black and red, black and blue, and black and neon yellow), is made from stretchable nylon/lycra which offers a one-size-fits-all perfect second-skin fit for all size hands, has exposed fingertips for maximum sensory experience, and even comes with a built-in sweatband and an easy in-easy out Velcro enclosure. The sticky palm and fingers are produced through a specialized embossed silicone process, with devastating effects.

Zac and his dad are now busy marketing GameHand to stores and distributors where video games are sold, as well as on their web site, www.GameHandGlove.com. Zac’s even writing a GameHand newsletter each month, as well as providing ZacChat for video game players to meet and talk about the latest in video game play. Zac is now being scheduled for interviews with all media outlets, as his is a classic story of young American entrepreneurial spirit at its best. As long as he gets his homework done, of course!

“I know I’m a kid and all, but my goal is to get this glove into the hands of players everywhere, and make this the biggest thing. That would be very cool. I’m really proud I helped invent the GameHand. You gotta love the glove! “

You know, nothing warms my heart like some guy using his kid to cash in on the video game craze. I wouldn’t be surprised if later down the road, expert game playing kids become just like fallen child star actors. And Zac, some advice… for the sake of your future, please just run away, before its too late.

- I really haven’t really talked about it, but there has been flood of stupid mainstream game related news items as of late. Aside from the stupid ones, like some kid getting electrocuted while playing or the British parent who was outraged when some Disney GBA game he got for his kids told them to “Fuck off and die!” in the opening credits (I believe he was duped into buying a pirated cartridge). most of them involving idiots of who hurt themselves or others and happen to be playing video games at the same time. One guy, again in UK I believe, was so annoyed by his crying infant child that he sat on him or her (and the British press had a field day by splashing “GameCube kills baby” on every cover) or some dumb kid that stabbed his baby nephew in the stomach, also while he was trying to concentrate on gaming (and believe it or not, it wasn’t a game like Grand Theft Auto that messed him up, but the Incredibles?).

But most seem to be coming from Asia, mostly China actually, where there’s been a slew of parents neglecting their children due to online game, leading to cases of death by starvation cuz mom and dad are at some internet cafe for days on end, or some kid killing some other kid real life due to the death of his online persona. So it seems that China is trying to take care of matters themselves according to this one article…

Game Addiction Clinic Opens In China
With stories of obsessed online games players from the Far East becoming a mainstay of video game news, the first officially licensed clinic for Internet addiction has been established in China, with a majority of its patients addicted to online game playing, according to an Associated Press report.

The government-owned clinic began taking patients in March, from its location on the campus of the Beijing Military Region Central Hospital. A dozen nurses and eleven doctors care for the patients, mostly youths aged 14 to 24 who, according to Chinese authorities, have lost sleep, weight and friends after becoming addicted to video games and online use.

Many patients suggest that their obsession began with a desire to escape day-to-day stress, especially pressure from parents to excel in school.

“All the children here have left school because they are playing games or in chat rooms everyday,” says the clinic’s director, Dr. Tao Ran. “They are suffering from depression, nervousness, fear and unwillingness to interact with others, panic and agitation. They also have sleep disorders, the shakes and numbness in their hands.”

The clinic has established a standard diagnostic test to determine whether someone is addicted, then uses a combination of therapy sessions, medication, acupuncture and sports like swimming and basketball to ease patients back into normal lives. Patients normally stay between ten and fifteen days at the equivalent of $48 a day, compared to an average city wage of $20 a week.

The clinic estimates that up to 2.5 million Chinese suffer from Internet addiction, although these figures are disputed. According to government figures, China has the world’s second-largest online population, after the United States, of 94 million people.

Internet use for business and education has been encouraged by the Chinese government, as video games have been accused of ?eroding public morality?, with Internet cafes regularly facing crackdowns and significant fines.

- Finally, at least for the time being (I’m not totally caught up with the gaming news, not even half-way), a lot of my cartooning friends will all be attending the San Diego Comic Con next week. And many of them are, how shall I say, bothered by the massive presence that video games have managed to make for itself in such a short time over the past few years. Well to all of them, I highly suggest that they check the following panel which takes place on Sunday:

1:30-2:30 Did Videogames Kill the Comic Book?
Videogame director David Jaffe (God of War, Twisted Metal: Black) was a slobbering fanboy when he first contacted comic writer Paul Jenkins (Spider-Man, Hulk, The Sentry) about working together on a series of videogames. Since then, the two have shared many conversations about the potential of the gaming medium, the worst parts of the games business, and the fact that games may have very well killed the comic book. In this one-hour discussion, Paul and David share these thoughts along with others, such as why most comic book videogames lack emotional impact and how to make the perfect comics-based game. As both Paul and David are pretty easygoing fellows, feel free to shout out questions and disagreements during the conversation. Room 6A
