Super Mario VR

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

- In gaming news, the one thing that everyone is talking about of course, is the new price structure for the Xbox 360. For those living under a rock, there are two packages to chose from; the first is the “core” package that gets you the system, 1 wired controller (the first sign of MS’s constant blabbering about wireless was total bullshit), and a standard AV cable for $299. Note that there is NO hard drive included. WTF indeed. The other deal, or the “premium” package, has the system, a 20 gig HD, 1 wireless controller, LIVE Silver membership, a headset, media remote, high-def cables, and ethernet cable for $399, an extra hundred bucks.

The reasoning behind this, right from the top, is to give those who don’t care about LIVE and all full fledge-features that the system can offer a chance to just jump in and play games, plus save some money to boot. Sounds like a swell idea, right? Wrong.

Because in America, people automatically go for the cheapest deal, period. So right off the back, almost no game companies will utilize the hard drive, which pretty much defined the Xbox experience in the first place. Without a HD, you really can’t do much in online games, where you absolutely need the space to download extra content and patches. And with MS’s whole “HD-era” mentality, along with their decision to go with traditional DVDs instead of much faster and high capacity media such as Blu-Ray, it ultimately means that the 360 will need a HD for streaming and other purposes far more than it did before.

Many are lamenting the fact that to play Xbox 1 games, you need to buy extra stuff, the HD, but let’s be honest, we all know that aside from Halo 1 & 2, there just won’t be any backwards compatibility (hence why I rushed out to get my Xbox 1 once it was apparent).

So, if someone can only spring for the core system in the beginning, why can’t they just get all the other bits and pieces later on, which MS is offering, anyway? Because its a total rip-off. For example, here just a few of the essentials and their prices:

? Hard Drive (20 GB) – $99.99 … Again, a 20 gig HD? In this day an age that’s far too paltry. And for a hundred bucks? Come on…
? Memory Unit (64 MB) – $39.99 … A cheaper alternative to the HD, but $40 for 64MB?
? Wireless Controller – $49.99 … Fifty bucks for a controller? It really is Dreamcast all over again.

And here’s the rest of the accessories:

? Faceplate – $19.99
? Play and Charge Kit – $19.99
? Rechargeable Battery Pack – $11.99
? Wired Controller – $39.99
? Headset – $19.99
? Universal Media Remote – $29.99
? Component HD AV Cable – $39.99
? S-Video AV Cable – $29.99
? VGA HD AV Cable – $39.99
? Wireless Networking Adapter – $99.99

… A faceplate for twenty fucking dollars? Who’s going to buy this? But the most insane has to be the wireless adapter for a hundred dollars, and not just because it looks like a $5 piece of Radio Shack junk, but the simple fact that both the PS3 and the Revolution will offer wireless right out of the box for no additional cost!

Also consider how the games will be $60 out of the gate, and you have a system that’s undeniably overpriced, and unjustifiably so. Imagine all the people that buy the core package in the holiday rush and how angry they’ll when they discover that they have to spend over $200 to get what they could have gotten with the premium pack. I also love how core system doesn’t even come with a friggin’ ethernet jack, that’s like literally $5! Then there’s the pissed off retailers that might find themselves with boxes of core packages cluttering up their inventory shelves. Now its looking like Sega Saturn all over again! The bottom line is that its amazing how far MS has gone in just one generation, and they seem almost eager to just piss their advantage away.

But now some are into a false sense of security that the PS3 will somehow be cheaper, and considering that you have the president of Sony telling everyone that “most people won’t be able to afford it”, I HIGHLY doubt that will be the case. This will easily be the most expensive next-gen war in many years. Hence why if Nintendo can deliver their hardware at a cheaper price, which is what the plan is I believe, they just might have the chance to take this one.

Back to MS though, many seem to agree that they’re already stumbling out of the gate.

- Speaking of wireless, its been announced that a proximity based instant messenger client is in the works for the DS and PSP. Its even suppose to support AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, and ICQ. And its from one of the folks who created Karnaaj Rally, which features the absolute worst box art ever.

- I forgot to mention this before, but there’s a big game convention going on right now in Europe (this where all the Xbox 360 news originates from). Well here’s some pics that just came from the Nintendo booth, which got everyone pretty hot and bothered. Here’s the info courtesy of one member of the GAF:

YESTERDAY AT THE NINTENDO BOOTH – FIRST MARIO 128 (REV) PICS SHOWN TO THE WORLD!

OK, not really. The first part is true, these pictures were taken at the Nintendo booth, but it was just a mini-game for the audience who should shout as loud as possible to change Lakitu’s direction. There were also some strange green tubes (I don’t know if people should scream into them?), but I wasn’t quick enough to capture this strange scenario on video. I really hope, this wasn’t some kind of test to see the public’s reaction to the interface of Revolution…

Also, take a look at this really strange video of a VR version of Super Mario Bros.

- Here’s the first two commercials in Nintendo’s upcoming Super Mario 20th Anniversary celebration. Its also been announced in Japan that the price of the Game Boy Micro will be about $110, with about three colors right out of the game, including a yet to be revealed Famicom model.

- This here is Ikusagami a game that features 65,535 characters on-screen at the same time, and its for the PS2! And it looks pretty damn good actually.

- Here’s the first ever report (at least to my knowledge) of a person being arrested in real life due to “virtual mugging”, that is beating up players in a game and stealing their character’s money. Only in Japan…

- And yes, I did hear that they’re making a Pac Man movie. And from what I hear, yes, it is going to be live-action. And yes, Hollywood sucks, and yes, I hope Uwe Bolle doesn’t direct it, but probably will.

- The other day I talked about religious games, and here’s another one, from Rebel Planet Creations. Its called Orion, and it may seem like any old fantasy game, but check out the description…

“Before the Great Flood of Noah, thousands of years passed of which we know virtually nothing. Civilizations may have risen and fallen – technologies discovered and lost. What little knowledge that has come down to us through the early chapters of Genesis reveals a world very different than our own. Myth and legend also point to an ancient past rich with history.

Enter the world of The Rebel Planet. Rebel Planet Creations has taken this mysterious world before the Flood and has created an imaginative fantasy world where the truth of Scripture is our foundation and theme, but only the minds? imagination our limit in telling the ancient tale of redemption and faith.

In our first tale, Adam is an older man hardened by centuries of dwelling on his own sin and the suffering he has brought upon the world. But into his world comes a young lieutenant named Orion (the biblical Enoch) whose own journey of faith will become the catalyst for bringing Adam back to a place of faith and hope. Indeed our first tale is ultimately the story of Adam?s conversion to faith and hope in the promised Seed to come.”

… If you check out the video, you’ll see the game’s character intermingling with… dinosaurs! Since I’m not very religious, I have to ask: do many Christians, specifically the ones that believe in the events from the Bible to a literal degree, believe that the dinosaurs were wiped out by the great flood?

Not to change the subject, but while we’re on the subject of the creation of man, I too believe that Intelligent Design should be taught in school. At least the one that theorizes that we were all created by the almight Flying Spaghetti Monster.

- Anyway, I’m a big fan of pixel art as mentioned in the past numerous times, and on the IC forums, another great artist was mentioned. His name is Paul Anderson and his stuff is pretty hot. In particular:

He also did a music video, Architecture in Helsinki‘s “Do The Whirlwind.”

- Finally, here’s a program that I just found out about that lets OS X users create their own games. I might have to give this a spin later this weekend.

Needless Complications

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

- So I went to Bust Buy and finally got the chance to handle the new Simpsons Season 6 box set. What a piece of crap! It’s even chintzier in real life.

BTW, here’s a pic of the next couple of sets with the same stupid theme. Note how Marge’s hair is a bit smaller than it should be. I’ve seen what the Homer head looks like inside and its a mess; all the DVDs are in loose slips, which means they’re guarantee to get banged around or drop out when you simply open the box. And again, regarding the cheapness of the shell, a Simpsons box set is something that’s meant to be passed around and shared, but I’m certain one of Homer’s eyes will get scratched or banged up in just minutes of not being on a shelf.

But at least you can get a regular box if you really want it. Though I sorta hope Fox reconsiders the whole thing and just re-issues the latest set with the box sometime soon. And considering that I wasn’t the only person at Best Buy who handled the Homer head with utter disdain, I have hope.

- Meanwhile on Friday I got super jazzed by the news of a Ducktales DVD release. There was no solid info then, so everyone was trying to guess if it contained the whole series or just the first season (which is the only good one… season 2 introduced Bubba Duck and the show immediately jumped the shark) was of no real concern to me. Far as I was concerned, Disney would have to work big-time to fuck this up.

And they did, because now it seems the first volume won’t have the first five episodes which made up the pilot movie, which is easily one of the top episodes. Jesus fuck, why Disney why?

- In gaming news, the big bombshell is Nintendo’s announcement that Zelda will be delayed until 2006. The reason cited is to give Zelda the extra time it needs to be the best possible game it can be, which seriously, is more than enough for me. Lord knows that Wind Waker definitely suffered from being rushed out to market. Plus my current backlog of games will probably take me well into the upcoming holiday season.

Plus you have to give Nintendo credit for having the guts to do this since not having their biggest title in years during a very crucial holiday season is going to really hurt them. Already people are saying that they should just give up on the GameCube version, as well as the system entirely, and just port it to the Revolution.

- Meanwhile. the DS gets a modest, but still very nice, price-drop later this weekend, to coincide with the release of Nintendogs. It will now $130. The Game Boy Micro’s release date and price has somewhat been “leaked” by various mainstream press sources. It’s now supposed to come out in September for $100, which most people choose not believe. I really think that’s too high (it should be around $60), but I certainly don’t doubt Nintendo asking for that much.

- Oh, real quick, here’s a new vid for Super Gunstar Heroes which just might be game of the year for the system.

- With Sega, whenever they give you a reason to love them, they also still make you hate them; some new info regarding the Sonic Gems Collection has appeared on various message boards and LiveJournals and its confusing to say the least.

First came word that the US version of Sonic CD would only have the American soundtrack. Once again, I’m a big fan of the Spencer Nielsen music and all, but the original score is fantastic, and admittedly more “Sonic-like”, so it just makes sense to have both. Well now comes word that the Japanese PS2 version (the game’s a Cube exclusive in the US) has both, but only plays the music for whatever country the system’s language is set for. Meaning if you’re system is set to Japanese… not the region code of the system itself, which once can only change via a mod chip, but the language setting in the main menu… you’ll get the Japanese soundtrack, and if its set to English, you get the American soundtrack. Apparently this does not apply to the Cube version since the Japanese score is not found on the disc. I’m guessing there wasn’t enough room; PS2 discs can hold around 4 gigs of date, the Cube’s can only hold about 1-ish. Got all that?

So does that make the Japanese PS2 version the definitive version? Well it does have Bare Knuckles (Streets of Rage) 1-3, but so does the Japanese Cube edition (once again, they were removed from the US version to get that E rating). But the version of Sonic the Fighters on the PS2 is apparently using the same, somewhat wonky Model 2 emulator that everyone has in action via the PS2 port of Virtua Fighter 2, which is less than perfect. Meanwhile, the Cube version is apparently much closer, and some have even said that the game was completely re-written for the system.

Why can’t Sega just make something easy for once?

- And speaking of lazy, it seems the upcoming of Princess Crown for the PSP, the sprite heavy beat-em up for the Saturn, is going to be just a straightforward port, which means it won’t take advantage of the widescreen and instead employ a border to fill up space. Jesus Christ. Hey, speaking of…

- Here’s a pretty interesting article about video games being produced by religious fundamentalists, and not the same people making games based on the Bible that most everyone knows about. These are all about Allah.

- Oh, and this is pretty sophomoric and all, but UK Resistance just posted “exclusive screens” from Sega’s Where Do Babies Come From. Yeah, not very creative, but you know stuff like this is not too far away (I already posted info about a vaguely porn-ish game for the DS not too long ago if you might recall).

- And for those who haven’t seen it yet, here’s a really nice interview with the man behind the Castlevania, which besides touching upon the series, talks about the future of 2D gaming in general.

- So it seems Keep America Beautiful and the National Council to Prevent Delinquency is asking the USRB to give the Marc Ecko game (which has a really long and stupid title which I refuse to repeat) an Adults Only rating due to the possibility of it inspiring kids to graffiti-up the streets. It should be noted that there’s no killing of folks, which San Andreas, the last game to get the AO rating, featured plenty of. Jet Set Radio faced a similar situation when that game was coming out, but was easily rectified by a nice little warning in the beginning of the game that reminded kids to not “try this at home”.

Now I know this sounds totally ridiculous, and I’m usually no conspiracy theorist, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this was all some marketing ploy devised by Mark Ecko to drum up interest for the game. I gotta say, I am so sick and tired of this guy; there was a good couple of months where no matter what game magazine I leafed through, there was some interview with the guy where he rambled on and on about how game designers today are “lazy” and all they create is “bullshit”. He even had the gall to give a speech at the Game Developer’s Conference where he put all the professionals in attendance to task for their lack of innovation. And in all these interviews he is now in the business of making games and is going to show how its done and whatnot. So what does this idiot off the streets go and do? Create a game, which he claims to be groundbreaking and all that bullshit, that’s basically a rip off of Jet Set Radio.

You know, you can bitch and moan about how such-and-such sucks, because it may be totally true, and it sometimes feels good to spout the obvious, but if you are going to criticize an entire industry, that one doesn’t even totally understand, and have the audacity to bold-face insult them right in their face, you better bring something else to the dance other than some busted wanna be title that’s oozing with “street attitude, yo”.

And here I am, the asshole, giving him more attention that he deserves. Bah!

- Anyway, in the real world, and maybe this is big news already, but a ton of people went nuts trying to get $50 iBooks in Virginia earlier today. Typical crazy Apple users of course.

Big Fight On Monster Mountain

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

So while everyone else in NYC was dealing with the unbearable heat (I hear it was like 100 degrees this past weekend… sheesh) I managed to escape to Saratoga Springs located in upstate New York with MK.

We spent the weekend with her friend Morgan and the rest of her family who has a house right by Lake Saratoga. The countryside, besides being beautiful, was relatively cool and definitively refreshing (the weather was hot, but we were under trees and by the water the whole time). Plus it was just nice and calm and very relaxing, which is precisely what the doctor ordered. I just had to get away from the city, with all its people and associated sounds and smells, as well as work, email, the internet, responsibilities, and headaches… MK & I have been invited to come and visit numerous times throughout the summer, but we had always postponed our trip up for assorted commitments (though truthfully, its always been for some “thing” or another in the city that I insisted on checking out, and looking back, I now feel sorta stupid for doing so).

I got to do a little of everything: drove around the farmlands, looked for geysers while hiking in the woods, went to the beach, and even went around the lake in a sail boat. Plus there was tons of delicious food in between, which we all washed down with water that was collected from the local springs. There was some time spend indoors, but it was mostly to rest up from all the activities, and it allowed MK & I to discover yet another awesome show from the UK called Little Britain, which was having a marathon on BBC America (plus we saw the Office Special and North By Northwest on TCM, which I hadn’t seen in years… I forgot how damn good it was). I seriously considered Morgan’s suggestion of taking the whole week off from work to spend the time there instead.

The drive back home last night was pretty crazy; the massive thunderstorm started just as we were on the road, about 100 miles north of NYC. It was like a scene out of the movies; massive dark clouds out of nowhere, a thick sheet of water on a stretch of road in the middle of wilderness. A bolt of lightning managed to take out the power of the toll that we just exited! It took about three hours to get to MK’s place to drop off clothes and get directions to Robin’s new apartment (the plan was to swing my so MK could get her paper cutter back and then head to my place for the night) but once we on the road again we heard the traffic report, with all the calamity that was ensuing on every which way into and throughout NYC (backed-up traffic, flash floods, and cars exploding galore), and figured it might be best to turn around (though we did swing by grocery store to get some bare necessities, like ice cream bars). So we just spent the rest of night at MK’s house; while she took care of business related to her website while I watched a DVD on backyard wrestling that Robin had passed along.

Two additional quick bits: Katie sent me her sample pages for the anthology last night, and they were just about the funniest, most amazing, and cutest things ever! MK & I couldn’t stop laughing for a solid five minutes. Already the project is off to a terrific start.

I also got a call yesterday afternoon from Jason, which I unfortunately missed, telling me that he’s now a proud father! His wife Christina gave birth yesterday, and I’ve been unable to return the call and pass along congratulates (and find out of if its a boy or a girl) due to the fact that my cell is completely dead (it shorted out right in the middle of hearing the number to the hospital) and my charger is home. So if you’re reading this Jason, which I highly doubt since I would assume you have much better things to right about now, congrats!!!

UPDATE: It’s a girl!
