Time To Pay Up

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

- God damn, there’s too much shit going on!

First off there’s the Negativland show going on right now at GAS, which is a parody of Disneyland called “Negativlandland”. Then there’s Resfest which starts tonight, with St?phane Sednaoui as the big guest start this year (though nothing’s ever going to top seeing Michel Gondry a few years back). But ultimately, the main reason why I wanna hit this year’s fest is to see this on the big screen.

But tonight I’ll be at Demo Night 3. Sans Spready Bear unfortunately.

- As for this weekend I’ll be in Jersey putting together minis for the SPX. Some bad news to some, or at least just one person (Joe, actually): I won’t have a story available for the show. There’s just been too many things going on, with Spready Bear taking priority, which I would like to think is understandable given that I’ve wanted this game to happen for at least two years now. Plus something else has come up, but I’ll explain that bit later… Hey, there’s still the ultra solid contributions from Joe and Katie which I can’t wait to show the rest of the world!

- Also happening this weekend is the Tokyo Game Show, one of the year’s biggest video gaming events, just a notch under E3 (though most agree that its much better since you don’t have 14 year old fatties who work at Gamestop running around trying to snag as much freebies as possible clogging the hallways).

Aside from the upcoming next-gen systems (including the first solid bits of info regarding the Revolution, such as maybe what this pic is about), one game that will be under the spotlight prominently is Metal Gear Solid 4. You can check out what it looks like here, here, and here. And damn… it looks pretty fucking sweet. The idea of Snake being old and grey not only looks cool but opens up plenty of gameplay possibilities, I especially love seeing Metal Gear Rex and the “Chibi” Metal Gear from Snatcher.

Then there’s Metal Gear Acid 2, which I guess is coming out with some weird night-vision accessory that snaps right up to the PSP. Interesting…

- Mizuguchi’s got a new PSP game coming out called Every Extra Extend. Its actually a port of a freeware shooter from Japan, Every Extend. Here’s what the PC version looks like…

I heard its awesome, but I wouldn’t know since I’m on a Mac. But still… can’t Kenta Cho games be that behind? I wouldn’t surprised if he wasn’t already working on that actually.

- Plus there’s also Katamari on the way for the PSP. And it looks just like the PS2 version, which is guess is cool (and hence why I’m not bothering with. But…

What about a DS version? Well, apparently it was never officially announced, despite the fact that it seems like a perfect fit, plus the creator had been quoted on several occasions that he loves the DS hardware. Personally, and I’m a super huge fan and all (got the game when it came out in Japan, talked everyone’s head off about it, even in my game design class, then tried drumming up interest once it hit stateside) but unless it brings something new to the table, then a third game might be overkill, and I’m just echoing Keita Takahash’s sentiments.

- Oh, and that report from 1UP that Treasure was making a 2D game? Well here’s an interview from IGN that follows up on this tidbit:

IGN: It’s been announced that you’re making Xbox 360 games, and we’ve heard some buzz that your first game for the platform will be 2D. Can you tell us what you can do with 2D games on a powerful system like Xbox 360?

Maegawa: Your information is incorrect.

Ouch. Note how the original 1UP story has mysteriously vanished. Though they aren’t totally wrong; Treasure is making a 2D game, just in gameplay, and with 3D graphics. And I hear that one of them will be a shooter! Plus there’s rumors of a Sin & Punishment 2, which would also be hot (though I’m a tad bit skeptical on that one).

- BTW, you can also download a demo for the Bone game starting today.

People who have already installed it say its a nice and simple point and click adventure game, so the word’s good thus far.

- Remember the holy grail for NES collectors I mentioned last time? Well here’s one for Saturn collectors…. easily.

Sonic Xtreme, the game that was supposed to usher Sonic, and the Saturn, into the 3D spotlight, but was eventually canned, and which many regard as one of the key points marking Sega’s long and painful downturn? Well now you can buy a piece of history.

The auction is set to end in a few hours, and one guys has offered $3,000 which, in my opinion, is pretty damn low. And this person has offered to sell copies to people for “research” for $40, which I’m certain Sega will not be happy to hear about. Still, if this was to be made public… just wow.

- So I finally watched FFVII: Advent Children last night. I won’t bore anyone with how needlessly complicated it was to get the hottest film on the internet. What else has to be said other than you can’t do shit on a Mac these days, whether it comes to downloading (I think BitTorrent sucks as is but on a Mac its twenty times worse) to viewing films (QT, VLC, and MPlayer seem to have a mind of its own, especially when dealing with subtitles files).

Anyway, about the movie: I have no reason to complain; I knew it was fan-service right from the get-go and wanted only to see some eye-popping CGI and amazing action sequences, and that’s what I got. Despite some iffy animation in spots and a far too frantic camera, it was fun to watch and very well done. And the music was great; hearing the old battle tunes remixed in classical and rock was pretty neat (and I totally love the ring tone bit at the end of the Tifa fight).

As for the rest, like I said, its fan-service, but it as still far more enjoyable than Spirits Within.

- Speaking of movies and Macs, does anyone know a good means to copy DVDs? I need a straight-forward rip and duplicate. And for the record, I want to make copies of obscure Asian flicks for friends (I’ve been promising a copy of Resurrection of the Little Match Girl for ages now), so its not like I’m trying to rip-off Hollywood or anything, though its not like I give a shit about that or anything. And since they’re all HK flicks, most should be single layer DVDs which should make the process easier, I think. I have two Macs to work with: a shitty little eMac (its no iMac DV SE, that’s for fucking sure) with a 1GHz, G4 processor with 1 gig of ram, and a 8x single-layer SuperDrive, and a G5 with dual 2 GHz processors, 1.5 gigs of ram, and a 16x double-layer SuperDrive. If someone can help me out, I give them something really… neat.

- And speaking of Robin, his write-up about last weekend reminded me how, besides robots, I would love to have run-ins, midgets, and other WWF-esque elements at my wedding.

- Time for more bizarre Super Mario-inspired art!

________________________________________________________________________________

Back to this other thing that just came up. Well…this is pretty embarrassing to talk about in public but…. I have a serious problem, one that many Americans have, and which I’ve tried running away from. And failed. That problem is credit card debt.

My problems started about four years ago. When Ubi Soft NY shut down I was out of a job, and once 9/11 happened, so were many others, making the task of getting a job damn near impossible. I had to go on unemployment, and even though I was in highest tier, the weekly check still wasn’t enough. When it came to paying bills, I had to make a decision…. pay back Visa or buy food. Can you guess what I choose?

After a while I began getting letters from the credit cards wondering where their money, so I contacted a “reputable” debt management provider (one that was recommended by my bank) and was told that they could negotiate terms on my behalf. To pay off four different cards I would only have to pay one monthly sum. And for a while it seemed as if I was on the right track. But my situation grew worse. A full year passed and I still couldn’t find a decent job, and my unemployment insurance ran out. I eventually could not make the rent, so I was kicked out of my apartment (by a zealous landlord who was more than happy to get rid of me and sell the place to a yuppie for five times the amount I was paying… I paid relatively little for a lot of space). I then had to couch surf for a few months to save up the money for a new place. Before doing this I contacted the debt management place to ask them if I could put a hold on payments during this time, but they seemed completely apathetic to my plight, and were even downright rude. So I simply stopped paying. I had so much on my mind at the moment that I just didn’t have the time or energy to think about it (when you don’t have a home, you tend to be only able to think of just the truly important things at the moment). After I found a new home, and a new job, I was ready to start paying again, but the agency was mysteriously gone… they had changed names I was told and none of their contact info work. The new phone numbers didn’t lead to anywhere, and I even became frustrated with all the follow-up involved. I’ve always known that my credit was bad, but I just never found the time and energy to get things back on track. And the idea of having poor credit has just become a reality that I’ve slowly grown to accept as something permanent.

Well its all finally caught up with me: I just received notice from a collection agency asking for the money owed and that if I don’t pay up, I’ll be sued, all my possessions will be confiscated, and all that jazz… you know, standard collection agency jargon. Its a pretty high amount, and that’s not too surprising since interest rates are high and all, but it’s actually far higher than it should be. Seems all that money that I paid way back when did not go towards my debt. Not one single cent. I was completely ripped off, and I’ve since discovered that I’m not the only one; shortly after 9/11, when a great number of folks experience financial hardships, various “organization” that were set up to help people ripped them off blind, and I was one of them. I’m pissed to be sure, but its in the past and I’m not sure what can be done. I suppose I can pursue legal action, but much like when I got e. coli poisoning, and when I was in homeless, I really don’t have the time and energy (and money) to pursue vigorous legal action.

Anyway, I owe some people lots of money. Thankfully, as you’ll hear often elsewhere, creditors just want their money and are willing to make deals to get something, anything. I’m in the process of brokering a deal, but it will mean that I will have very little money for the next immediate future. And that means I will have to be even busier than before, especially when it comes to freelance, which sucks because I had planned on scaling back after this particularly busy period. So I’ll have to stick to a strict budget, meaning no frivolous video game or DVD purchases for the next 12 months or so. Though with all the shit that I have yet to see or play, the only reason why I even feel bad is because I’m such a diligent consumer. Hey, I’m proud to be an American! Though I have to admit, this is good. To be debt free…. that will be nice.

A Cup O’ Noodle Game Boy? Sure.

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

- The 20th anniversary celebration for Super Mario Bros keeps on going. First off, here’s some shirts to help mark the event by various designers. By far the best one is Sega’s design:

And of course, there’s the limited edition Famicom Game Boy Micro which just came out in Japan. Here’s some pics of the package from someone on the GAF who already got there’s:

Gotta admit, that is pretty sexy. But again, the screen is too small and I already have a NES edition GBA SP. Plus I don’t like how the exterior, with the exception of the faceplate is red, which means it won’t look as good with other faceplates.

At least there’s always the Famicom 2nd player controller, which you need to send Club Mario points for (which are earned by registering games)… why the hell don’t we get stuff like here?

BTW, designers and various companies are making their own plates as well. I like the Cup O’ Noodle one the best thus far:

- Also from the GAF, here’s some renders of what a portable GameCube would look like. One of the better fake system pics out there Plus, do keep in mind how the Game Boy Next will more than likely be a portable Cube…

- So the “holy grail” for NES collectors has appeared on eBay once again, a cart used for the 1990 Nintendo World Championship. As of this writing, its already up to $5,000, which is not at all uncommon.

The cart features three games, Super Mario Bros, Rad Racer, and Tetris. The player had six minutes to get through a stage from each game and earn the highest score. Each finalist was given the cart (only 116 copies are in circulation), plus there’s 26 gold carts that were awarded to Nintendo Power subscribers (and that fetches primo money, around $10,000, even $15,000 I believe).

- I finally got to check out footage from Sonic Riders, the new airboarding game, and I gotta admit… that it doesn’t look that bad. Dare I say that it looks sorta fun? And there’s definitely a F-Zero GX vibe going on.

- Yet another old flick is being turned into a game: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. And since I’m a huge of the movie, this news is particularly annoying.

I wonder who will have the balls (and the money) to start doing Woody Allen based games? Annie Hall for Revolution would rock.

- And yet another reason to be interested in the Xbox 360 has come up: Treasure’s making a game and its going to be in 2D.

But otherwise, things ain’t looking good for the system. For example, its launch title, Perfect Dark Zero, is still a mystery, which at this point, is a pretty bad thing. Its a little over two months away, and is supposed to be the one game that sells the new system, and we aren’t being bombarded with countless screenshots. Something is definitely amiss.

- Though the big news at the moment is Square-Enix “dropping the ball” in regards to the American release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. It just came out in Japan and the US release was suppose to happen today as well, but its been delayed for unspecified reasons (most believe that dubbing is taking longer than expected) and then claiming that no office release date was given, despite the fact there’s been one on trailers dating back to E3. Plus they gave Destination Films the American distribution rights, which is only coming out on DVD and UMD (of course), yet Destination has only really done theatrical releases, so that’s another reason for the slow-down.

Which means that those who really want to see the film are not going to wait and will download it (its available via BitTorrent as of last night), given that its for a hardcore audience in the first place. But I’m certain that they’ll buy the official version anyhow, no matter how bad the film is. I guess I’ll find out myself… I’m going to download and see it for myself later tonight.

- Meanwhile, in the real world, Adult Swim’s new line-up has been revealed. I normally wouldn’t care since I don’t have cable, but one show makes a triumphant return (albeit to Sundays, 5:30 in the morning): Cartoon Planet!!! And now I might have to seriously consider getting cable again.

- Elsewhere, a place that is known for being the center of conflict is trying to spread the message of peace and unity…. via Bruce Lee. Fuckin’ a.

- In Thailand, some crazy baker is making bread in the shape of severed (and mangled) human body parts. Looks delicious!

- Last night I finally got Katie’s finished pages. And all I say is, along with Joe’s, I think I’ll have a pretty damn fine mini for SPX if I don’t say so myself.

- This morning as I put on a fresh pair of jeans, one that I haven’t worn in a long time, and when I put my keys in one front pocket, I made a discovery: a whole stack of tickets I won while playing skee-ball! Time to go cash them in for more parachute guys and spider rings…. gives me an excuse to Coney Island which I’ve only gone maybe twice this summer… sadly.

- And at work I finally got this: the ultra limited edition Laserbeak for my Soundwave statue:

- Plus this just came out. A coworker just came in with the box set. Fuck… and I really wanted to save some money for next weekend too.

And the directors themselves will be at Tower (which seems to be the only place selling the set at the moment) later tonight. At least I have a good reason not to go since…

- Tonight marks my return to teaching. Not my regular class though; I have two senior thesis students this year and will begin meeting one of them this evening. But as I type this, two students are talking about the UCB; one is a friend of a performing and are talking about some of the performers, some of which I’m familiar with, such as “The Silver Fox”. Its been a while… I think I might have to check a show out after I’m done at school.

Mr. Positive

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

This past weekend was incredibly nice and relaxing, and precisely what I needed, especially since the stress levels have been steadily increasing as of late, with no chance to lower or slowdown in sight. Plus it was sorta nice to be out of the city yesterday since it was the anniversary of, you know…

I took Friday off, not to spend the whole day playing Dreamcast, but to sit in a car for straight six hours with MK, Robin, and Matt Singer, a good friend of theirs from Syracuse, to drive up to Cape Cod for a wedding. The drive itself was highlighted by the soundtrack to Over the Top. You know, the Sly Stallone arm-wrestling epic? Anyway, it’s another once of those classic 80′s synth metal/early 90′s Sega CD scores that makes you want go out and hug a Casio keyboard.

Anyway, we arrived our destination about early evening, checked into our smelly motel room, and went to the pre-wedding BBQ in the woods to meet most of MK’s others friends from school. I must admit, and I don’t think MK even knew this, though it may have been apparent, but I was extremely nervous about meeting them all. Thankfully, they’re all super cool, and I even got along splendidly with Matt, whom I was a bit apprehensive about since, historically speaking, I don’t get along with other folks with my same first name. My arch-nemesis in the third grade was a kid named Matt Hopkins I shit you not, and its been like that ever since. Also, it finally nice to meet the legendary bottle cap collecting, burrito loving Heather (though I hear that’s a common trait with everyone from San Francisco).

After a huge meal and a couple of drinks (which resulted in some conversation at the bar about King of Fighters with Robin, though I don’t remember the details), it was the last half of Star Trek: The Next Gen (the one about the friend, self-aware Borg) and some sleep on the most uncomfortable bed in existence. Though I can’t rag on the place too much since I have a major soft-spot for travel lodging; there’s just something totally awesome about watching Spongebob in a hotel in some random part of the country. But the highlight is always the local television, and this trip was no exception, thanks to some bizarre religious show aimed at kids. The first part had the devil, calling himself Mr. Positive(?) talking with a kid, with each wearing black suits and shirts plus red ties. They both went back and forth about how awesome hell was, and how much power there was in being evil, and… straight to credits. There was no “well its cool being evil and all, but if we loved God, we would be much happier” and all that jazz. They just stated that it was the choice they made and that’s it. Then there was a bunch of teenagers sitting around talking about how everyone has forsaken God for a blind faith in science and other bits of mumbo jumbo, all awkwardly recited, as if their braces has been tighten a bit too much. I really wish I brought my VCR along for the trip.

Then we played a round of mini-golf (I did pretty wretchedly compared to everyone else, but it was like my second time ever playing, but I still had fun), had lunch at Friendly’s (where the conversation was mostly about old NES games and Hulk Hogan), and chilled out at the pool. Once it was late in the afternoon, we all went back to our rooms and changed into our nicest clothes, but left our shoes off; the wedding took place on the beach, and it was a nice and serene ceremony, punctuated by bubbles (it was a request by one of the brides… yes there was two… it was a lesbian wedding). So we all blew bubbles while standing in the sans, which was loads of fun until my bottle leaked in my pants (which means I have to keep them now… I was going to return them to the Gap afterwards, but they do look nice). Afterwards MK & I ran to the drug store to get paper since MK never got a chance to wrap the present (which I did on the trunk of her car) and finally made it to the reception where we spent a solid six hours of drinking and dancing (Robin was the easily the belle of the ball, impressing all the ladies with his sly, drunken white boy moves…. too bad the ladies were mostly elderly or dykes). Best of all, SNL had two installments of Bear Country that late night.

The next morning was spent at the beach with hot chocolate (which would form a skin of you didn’t tend to it, like tomato soup… weird) and some damn fine country donuts. While MK spent some time with her friends making sandcastles, where the cowboys and indians that we’ve won during skee-ball came in handy, I walked out to the ocean The tide was out, and I mean really out, at least a few hundred yards. It was just incredibly nice out there… it was the first time in a long time where I really did feel as if I was completely away from it all. And just standing there, with just sand and tiny hermit crabs at my feet, along with the cool ocean water, coupled with the all stars being visible in the sky from the night prior, has really strengthen my resolve to move out of the city and into the country as soon as possible.

We said our goodbyes around noon and hit the road with Gob’s theme from Arrested Development leading the way. Later Matt quizzed Robin’s video gaming IQ by playing randomly selected game music from my iPod (which I’m sure drove MK nuts… she hates listening to game music and driving at the same time). Then I play a bit of Crispin Glover (which I know drove Matt & Robin nuts) and told my various tales of woe and misfortune for Matt, who was shocked to say the least (and some of which, might I remind everyone, will soon be available in comic form!). Upon hearing my hellish roommate tales, he said the first he was going to do was go home hug his roommate. He’s also a film guy (he reviews them for the Village Voice and is an on-air personality for IFC) and said that he was also going to rent Popeye the movie, which I built up quite heavily throughout the weekend, to see if its as brilliant as I claim it to be. I’m eagerly awaiting a lengthy explanation of exactly big of an idiot I am.

In other news, and speaking of weddings, Dave finally made public his proposal to Raina (and via the form of a very cute mini-comic, or course). And I’m happy to be one of the few to be told about the good news before the rest of the world. They do make quite the pair, so it makes perfect sense (especially now since everyone seems to be getting married these days, as I alluded to the last time I wrote).

Though I only hope for their sake they opt for a more “non-traditional” wedding. I’m a big believer in tradition, as some friend of mine may already know, but after going to this past weekend’s wedding at the beach, plus co-worker Steve’s medieval affair from last year, I now feel that weddings should be as loose and “fun” as possible. Yeah, the super-hero themed wedding next month sounds cheesy, but I know I’m gonna have a blast. I’m going as Clark Kent btw.

As for gaming news, real quickly…

- Following up the Mega Man remake, Capcom has unveiled a Meg Man X remake, Irregular Hunter X. And it looks like shit (at least IMHO). At least Rockman Rockman has a style going for it (one that I don’t like too much, but at least its something). But this looks like some rush job 3D revamp, a la Sega Ages 3D:

I should also add that higher-res shot from the Ghouls ‘N Ghosts game has also been revealed, and its sorta the same. Its not totally bland 3D, but its not 2D sprites, which I think bites.

- Believe it or not, but Michael Jackson was originally going to do the music for Sonic 3.

- Another Dreamcast shooter is making it over here via a different system, this time for the PS2.

- And a quirky DC title finally gets its sequel, again for a different system. Seaman 2 is good, but I’d rather have Typing of the Dead 2.

- Here’s a neat Elevator Action-esque game coming out for the PSP, called simply Exit.

- And here’s an interview with the American branch of D3, the makers of some awesome budget titles in Japan. Seems as if we’re really not going to get many, if any, of them, which is a real shame. I’m confident that there’s a market here in the US for game where you control scantily clad women doing aerobics, posing for pictures, fighting each other, fighting zombies while wearing a cowboy hat, competing in wacky, Double Dare/MXC-syle challenges, or just one big one, rampaging through the city.

- On the same sad, pervy tip, here’s Wrestle Angels Survivor, which will supposedly feature over a hundred different characters (keep an eye out on this page I guess). Its a card battling game, btw. Hey, I at least dig the characters more than the ones in the ultra creepy Rumble Roses.

- Again, sticking with creepy, and this time courtesy of the IC forums, check out this awesome bit of gaming cosplay:

I still want that shirt.

- And not just creepy, just plan sad: I guess when Playboy showed off nude game characters last time, it was a big hit, so they’re doing it again. Uhhh.

- So Tanguy has a new online home, which can be found here. Sorry, but you haven’t lived until you’ve heard his take on Kid Icarus.

- Finally, Super Mario Bros celebrates its 20th Anniversary today. Let’s give it up for the fat guy!
