Okay, so I’m not dead. I didn’t get killed on Saturday night, there was no big brawl, nor a confrontation of any sort. Basically, my internet stalker pussied out and didn’t show up when he said he was going to, which was the chiptunes show that evening.

I gotta admit, I’m rather disappointed… various folks thought I was nuts for wanting to meet the person face to face, but the thing is, the minute he told me “I can’t wait to me you in person so I can punch you in the face” (I’m not sure if that’s what he said word for word, but its very close), I just knew I simply had to meet him. And once the wacky emails starting flowing in, and I because some pseudo “father figure” of sorts, well, that simply sweetened the deal. And I wasn’t the only who was bummed out; Mike (O’Connor) really wanted to see shit happen as well, and Jake (a.k.a. virt) requested that the fight take place during his set. The best part of all this has to be everyone’s guesses as to what would take place, as well as what he would be dressed as. Mike hypothesized that he’d show up with a black& white zerox copy of my face worn as a death mask (which made me remember of this hilarious Ingmar Bergman parody from SCTV), and a machete. Most folks figured the same, that he’d be a doppleganger or evil twin, perhaps wearing a shirt that I’d seen me wear before in a picture, but in reverse. But yeah, the guy was a no show. I guess I shouldn’t have said anything; I guess it hardly a surprise that anyone who’s stalking me would be reading this site and there gotten the head’s up.

Anyway, this past Friday was the Silver Mt. Zion/Black Ox Orkestar show. Caught that with Mike and Joe (Salina); was introduced to Joe’s girlfriend and one of his band-mates, as well as Mrs. O’Connor whom I’d been interesting in meeting for a long while now. At least ever since Mike started passing along all my stories to her, since he himself seems fascinated by how much of a “shit-magnet” I am. Also, the BBC documentary on furries that I showed him sorta “scared” her, so I wanted to apologize in person.

The music went down at Northsix, in Willamsburg, so I knew ahead time that the evening would be chock full of annoyances. Its actually a nice space, and every band I’ve seen there has sounded just great (guess its the set-up they have or the acoustics), but man, the fucking dipshit hipsters in the crowd… Which, for this particular show, were actually fucking dipshit hippy hipsters. Also not helping was the insanely humid weather, though I must admit that where I was standing the whole evening was a sweat spot; there was just a tiny bit of AC in the whole place, hitting just one tiny area, which I happened to be in. But the biggest headache was how things were scheduled to start at 8:00, but Black Ox didn’t hit the stage till 10:00.

For those not familiar with Black Ox Orkestar, they basically infuse old Jewish folks songs with a contemporary and worldly slant. I can’t say that I’m a diehard fan of theirs, but after seeing nothing but chiptunes and punk shows live, I just wanted to check out something different, plus I Mike passed along some mp3′s of their a short whiles back and I dug what I had heard. After their set, A Silver Mt. Zion took over, and they’re even harder to describe (I’m not much of a music nerd, so I can’t really think of anyone at the top of my head to compare or contrast them to), so I’ll just say they’re an experimental, post-rock ensemble with heavy does of folk and politics, presented in a very orchestrational manner. Their set was a whopping seven songs, yet they played for over two and half hours, and that’s because each is between 20-40 minutes long. They sounded terrific as well, but I think I would have definitely enjoyed both if I was sitting down, perhaps in an amphitheater. Though it was the late start time which really took the oomph out of everything.

Also, the aforementioned hipsters. First off, almost everyone around us was text-messaging throughout the entire show. WTF. This one chick to my right during Silver Mt. Zion was crying almost the entire time, and at first I figured it might be the music, but then it sorta looked as if she was getting dumped by some dude, right then and there, via text-messages. Though the retards did provide some comedy gold, when front man Efrim Menuck asked the crowd for a statement… not one of adulation for the band, or a question, just a statement… so you had assorted knuckleheads belting out excessively trite shit, and each time Menuck responded with “Ehh… try again.” One guy behind us yelled out “Stop fascism now!” and Menuck pointed out how everyone sounded like bumper stickers. Though my personal favorite had to guy who asked the band to tell Israel to “chill out”, or something to that effect. I mean, seriously… did the douchebag know who the fuck was on-stage?!?!

Saturday was the latest Insert Credit NYC meet-up. The centerpiece was the chiptunes show at The Tank in the evening, but beforehand everyone gathered at Vol De Nuit, a Belgian beer joint near the West Village that Jeremiah is fond off. There were some old faces, including a folks I had meet at the previous meet-up in the winter, as well as Joshua and Jeremiah, who aren’t really IC folks, though Jeremiah just started posting there, and some new faces as well, including Heather, a fellow game journalist who’s also involved in sketch comedy (as previously mentioned, she from LA and is in town for the Upright Citizen Brigade Theatre’s Del Close Marathon). Heather told me that that I’m somewhat responsible for her foray into the world of writing about games; she had been reading this site for a while and decided to check out my links page, which is where she discovered Insert Credit, and through that she became acquainted with people at The Gamer’s Quarter, and her work in that led to her writing professionally, which in turn led to her current gig as staff writer at Play Magazine. I was totally taken aback by this news, and it sincerely is one of the nicest compliments I have ever gotten.

And I was also pleased to hear that, because of my site, she’s also a fan of the Beer Drinking Fools!

Heather, myself (man, why do I make such stupid faces for the camera?), Bit Shifter, and Nullsleep

I also got to meet like Dave (Maruo), who’s game-related artwork I have recently become a fan of (I’d pass along specific examples, but his site seems down at the moment), and Colin, who made everyone Cave Story shirts. The night before, I asked for Malco (here are all the character btw) and that’s exactly what I got…

Colin also produced a shirt for Mike that I’ll be passing along next chance I get…

There was also one made featuring Rei, from Neon Genesis Evangelion (you know, the 14 year old emo girl with blue hair), bent over with her ass in the air, and masturbating, which was made specially for Jeremiah. I was going to take a picture, but then thought against it.

So what do nerds who talk to each other on a message board that’s about video games talk about in real life? Video games, naturally. But other territory is covered as well. Harry Potter for example. I had heard about it a long whiles ago, but I didn’t know too much about Wizard People, Dear Readers till Joshua finally explained what it is: think Dark Side of the Moon, though instead of Wizard of Oz you have the first Happy Potter flick, and instead of a Pink Floyd album, you have a pair of mp3s, which can be found here.

After some booze, we all went downtown for the show. The show kicked off with Anamanaguchi, who are basically three kids (none of them looked any older than fifteen) with guitars who play along with a PC that emulates NES audio (I believe that was their chip set-up). And they were pretty damn good! Nice, fast-paced, high energy, Mega Man-ish melodic speed rock. Next was Priestcave, a brand new two-man outfit comprised of virt and Prozax (through I could have sworn they were called Beefcake since that’s what I though Jake kept on yelling). Prozax, just like virt, is yet another dude who I was a big fan of, back when I was heavy into the OCRemix/VGMix scene. He’s like the Steve Vai of guitar game remixes, so the chance to finally see the guy play live was simply awesome (and he’s a totally nice dude to boot). The highlights of their set include their remix of the 80′s classic Major Tom, in which Jake’s girlfriend went upfront to play on back-beat a Game Boy, which she actually composed herself (in either LittleSoundDJ or Nanoloop), with Jake handling the vocals (and since he didn’t know the words, he had to read the lyrics off his cellphone), the first ever chiptunes remix of the 70′s disco classic Apache, and the chance to hear virt’s simply amazing “What if Castlevania was done by Capcom?” piece, but without any technical problems this time around (and with an awesome guitar accompaniment). Last on the card was Mark Denardo, who I’ve seen a couple of times now, and each time the show has had a whole slew of technical problems throughout the set. But the thing is, I’ve actually come to sorta expect it, and it actually adds to the chaotic, experimental flavor. Of all the chiptunes folks out there, Mark is perhaps the most daring and unpredictable. Almost all his songs were (or at least felt like) works in progress, and this time around, he also has a girl accompany him on violin, and the effect was quite nice with certain songs (who happened to be the girlfriend of one of the other ICers who came out for the meet-up, “Mr. Mustache”, and the only reason why I’m not stating his really name is that I sorta forgot… sorry, I’m just really bad with names).

In-between the Priestcave and Denardo set, I was talking with Jeremiah when we spotted some guy wearing the click-stick TATE shirt (which you can find pictures of me where here, and we all instantly knew that he too was part of our secret society. It turned out to be another fellow ICer: NightsB(again, I’m bad with real names, sorry… anyway, he’s the guy who helped found N-Philes). And on the way to the trains, Colin gave a call to Matt Williamson, a.k.a. ShaperMC, who I’ve chatted with online via the IC forums and this blog to a certain extent, and whom I’ve been interested in conversing with for a while now, and I finally got my chance.

As for last night, Robin came over and I made him dinner: Bocca burgers on the grill, with a side of of cheese doodles. Yum! It was payment for services, i.e. Robin lending me his DV bridge and showing me how to capture all the crazy stuff I’ve captured over the years on VHS. And while my eMac was encoding Taste of Bread, the crazy black & white “movie” that Dave (Roman) & I made one lazy summer weekend in Long Island years back, I let Robin try out some of my games, including all Rez, which he had never played before, which he totally dug (and that made me quite happy), as well as Shadow of the Colossus, which he also really enjoyed.

Also, Robin passed along this, which I guess he came across at work or something, and just knew I’d totally go ape-shit over…

I tried to upload Taste of Bread on YouTube before going to bed, and found out that it was too long (they have a ten minute time limit), so I applied for a director’s account which allow more privileges. And when I have the time, I’m going to rip, encode, and upload even more stuff, and in the end compile it all as some crazy mix-DVD, similar to K. Thor‘s Evil DVD (not to be a copy-cat, but I’ve had the idea for years, and have created stuff similar but with just two VCRs). I think it’s time I raided Joe (Simko)‘s cable access on tape collection.

And as for today, it looked as if my trip to Otakon this upcoming weekend may not happen. Long story short, and not to get into too many details, but basically a “client” that owed me money really dropped the ball and I’m now getting paid for something a full month later than previously scheduled, leaving me a full $2000 deficit from what I was expecting to have this month. But, I’ve managed to make certain arrangements and will indeed be making the trip after-all. Though the best part is, Jeremiah is now coming along for the ride! Roadtrip to anime-dork central 2006!!!

May as well pass this along: since I’m going to mod my PS2 very soon, I’ve been on the look-out for imports. I already have Zombie vs. Ambulance, and I’m definitely picking up KOF XI and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, so other than both those and some other Simple 2000 series games, my eyes are on shmups. Someone at IC was selling his copy of Espagluda, so I figured I’d save him the headache of dealing eBay, and also take advantage of the terrific deal!

I really dig the cute drawing he did! And I’m still waiting for a top-loading NES that I also bought from a fellow ICer.

Lastly, despite all the stuff that’s going on, I’m still trying to keep up with all the gaming news that’s happening. I’ve been meaning to pass along a bunch of stuff that I’ve found, but I’ll stick to the stuff that I’m assuming most haven’t heard about or which isn’t too old…

- Check out his awesome illustration that supposedly shows the entire cast of wacky characters that the Wii’s Virtual Console will provide!

For a bigger version, click here. It’s not official, but it should be! Every time I check it out, I noticed something new. Pac Man with the Mario 3 raccoon tails? Luigi and Roll in the OutRun car? Protoman manhandling Princess Peach? Bonk piloting the Vic Viper? The pirate ship with the cat head from Parodius shooting one of the bio-fish ships from Darius? Kid Dracula? Sweet!

- Remember the Nintendo 64 kid whose now all grown up? Well now it seems he’s truly parting with the past by selling his N64 on eBay.

- Another fellow IC guy passed this along today: an article he did for Lost Levels that’s all about the late, great shmup series, Thunder Force. The last boss in part 4 is still one of the all time greatest from any shooter, easily.

- Over at the NeoGAF, someone recently brought up how Psy-Phi, the bizarre touchscreen based fighter from Yu Suzuki, is actually going to appear in American arcades!

- Also via the Gaming Age Forums, Johnnyram has confirmed my worst fears: Senko no Ronde rev.X for the Xbox 360 is really good. Damn… I may have to get a 30 after-all

- Though I have to admit I’m not going as ga-ga over all the other Japanese games in development. I know I mentioned Trusty Bell, the RPG which is based up a dream that Frederic Chopin, a famous pianist from the 19th century, and while the premise sounds novel, it looks to be just another generic Japanese RPG with only an interesting premise going for it, and that’s it (and one which looks to be hardly utilized).

But people are going ape-shit over it, just like the new strategy RPG for the PSP in which you assume the role of Joan of Ark, which again sounds cool, but the game itself doesn’t appear to take advantage of the possibilities at all (and features fucking furries!!!). So what does this all mean? That creatively speaking, many game designers in Japan are in a rut it would seem? Maybe. Or that American gamers, at least ones that prescribe to the WACKY JAPPY train of thought, would gobble up a game if it was based upon the life and times of the guy who invented the septic tank if there was one.

- Though another reason why I would want a 360, which no one else seems to ever talk about, is the music visualizer that comes with it, which generates a cool light show when playing a music CD. I know that sounds like nothing special, but it is! Because it was designed by Jeff Minter. Anyway, I figured it to be small little application, but as evidenced by the recently released online manual, its actually quite an in-depth program.

- If you haven’t heard by now, Vic Ireland, the man behind Working Designs is coming back with a new publishing venture called, get this, Gaijinworks. Seriously, best-worst name ever. I fondly recall all those horrible Clinton jokes in Sega CD RPGs from the early 90′s, so its nice to know that razor sharp Ireland wit is still there!

- I simply can’t wait to get my PS2 modded so I can play Zombie vs. Ambulance. Though one major headache whenever playing import games is with the language barrier, which I was afraid my hinder my experience with ZvA (among other titles), but I need not worry anymore, thanks to this recently published FAQ.

- Here’s something else that was posted at IC that was totally news to me: a video featuring Metroid Zero Mission when it was still a beta. The most striking thing about it is super-deformed Samus, which looks quite nice, and fits in very well with the rest of the art design.

- Back to Rez for a moment, as I’ve mentioned numerous times in the past, I’m not the biggest fan of 1UP.com, but they do some really excellent special coverage at times, like their week long look at Q Entertainment. Needless to say, I really enjoyed the look back at my favorite game of all time, including some questions with the creator himself, Mizuguchi.

Though in less than thrilling news, I now hear that all those crappy songs in the American version of Lumines 2 will be appearing in the Japanese version as well (it was assumed that they were getting their own selection of music to suit their own tastes). Hmmm…

- For those who haven’t seen it, here’s the boxart for the latest chapter in the Metal Slug saga…

- And yes, its totally true: to off-set the ginormous cost of buying the ESPN license for Madden 2007 (and I bet they’re still feeling it from when they bought up the NFL license a few years back as well), EA is now going to have a behind-the-scenes look at the game in the form of a PPV. Meaning, gamers who want to check out the latest installment will have to fork over $20 to do so. Yeah, EA has done some crazy fucking things in the past, but this most certainly takes the cake.

… Finally, a few things that’s not video game related. First, an awesome vid that parodies the classic return of Optimus Prime. Trust me, everyone who grew up watching Transformers needs to see it. The guy who does the voice of Optimus is just perfect.

Next, another wacky YouTube vid, but one that’s not a parody (and one that John zeroed in on): its a PSA from the Star Wars droids against smoking. I so wish there was a safe sex one featuring Jabba the Hut and slave Princess Leia.

Lastly, and long story short, Ed Siemienkowicz and I like to go back and forth with MySpace comments, with nerdy pics and YouTube vids, and he just passed along this one. Hello Vader…

Everyday An Adventure…

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

So. Its been a while since updating, I guess. As previously mentioned, I took some time off to concentrate on the book. And how’s that going? Well… I still have a month left at least.

Aside from the book, I worked a bit more on the new game I’ll be heading up in the coming month, mostly background research. I’m still not going to say much more other than it’s based upon a rather prominent character, but one that’s become a bit muddled and unfocused, sorta like how comic book characters can get saddled with baggage related to wonky continuity over time. So my game will try to give the character a reset of sorts.

But otherwise, the past week hasn’t been terribly exciting. Though last night was, kinaa; I got into a heated exchange with a crack whore.

I had just returned from the city, it was late, I knew there was no food waiting for me in the fridge, and everything was closed. Which meant another trip to White Castle. Waiting inside was said crack whore eating a burger. This was one of those strictly take-out only places, so there are no seats, meaning she was eating in-front of the cashier. Which meant that she was already in the way, therefore I was immediately annoyed the second I saw her. Crack whore noticed this and words were exchanged. Mind you, the part of me that goes “easy… she could have a shiv” was offset by the fact that the place is right next to a police station. Anyway, the management got sick of her when she decided to light up a cigarette. I got in at least one good line: “The pre-crack cig smoke, eh?”

Okay, so that’s sorta non-eventful as well. Sorry.

As for other semi-interesting happenings and developments…

- I’m actually in a lot of pain. Two days ago I woke up with some slight discomfort in the left knee. Then yesterday it full-blown hurt like hell. Tried seeing my regular doctor, but he’s on vacation, plus his office sucks anyways, so I’m in the market for a new general practitioner. And aside from my knee, I also need to get this weird spot on my right ear lobe checked. I don’t know what the fuck it is, but it appeared as a tiny black dot a few weeks back, but has since grown and changed color, I think. MK can’t stop starring at it, which is driving me nuts. Plus it could be skin cancer or something.

- So my doctor is out of town, and my hairdresser is MIA as well. I think she’s sick or something. Hope she gets better soon, because I really need a haircut, bad. Hence why I may finally take up an offer from a friend of my roommate’s; my roommate is a fine artist, and all her friends are artsy-fartsy as well. One in particular likes to cut people hair, and give them “art cuts”, whatever the hell that means. May as well… Hey, free haircut.

- Back to my knee: despite the discomfort, I decided to walk down to movie night last night after work, for some bizarre reason. That meant trekking from 21st to way down the southern tip of Manhattan. Near the end, both legs were killing me; hey, I need the exercise; all this sitting around, toiling on the computer has seriously made me a lard-ass… hence why I didn’t feel like killing time at by surfing the net after work. So now my hold body is sore, especially the legs. And I gotta be on my feet all tomorrow night too (more on that in a bit).

No movie last night, just clips and shows. Watched a few scenes from Elmer Gantry, a classic Burt Lancaster flick where he plays a crazy, hot-headed minister, a few sketches from the Best of Ernie Kovacs, and key scenes from various movies featuring Mako, who passed away the other day. Most of my friends probably know him best as the ominous Asian voice in a number of cartoons, like Aku from Samuri Jack. Anyway, it meant a chance to check out some Conan the Barbarian. As for shows, watched episodes of Slings and Arrows, Deadwood, and Danger Man, an old BBC spy show which I had no idea was direct precursor to the Prisoner, one of my all-time favorite classic shows; aside from the same actor, its the same exact character and universe.

- Speaking of movies, I’m way behind with this year’s summer line-up. Still haven’t seen Cars (the one person I know who loves Pixar AND automobiles enjoyed it, so I’m certain I will as well, even if no one else did), Nacho Libre (which I hear is great, but truth be told, I’ve had my fill of pro-wrasslin’ cinema-wise thanks to the Asian Film Fest), Pirates of the Caribbean, and Strangers With Candy (though since Dave’s back from San Diego, I guess I’ll be checking that one out soon). Though MK & I did see My Super Ex-Girlfriend this week. And it was actually pretty good! It’s nothing brilliant, and fairly by the number in certain regards, but it was still lots of fun. Anyone who’s interested in super heroes is going to enjoy the basic premise, plus the acting is pretty terrific; Uma Thurman plays the psychotic gf with total perfection. Enough to illicit the biggest laugh of the whole evening, which wasn’t from the movie but from some guy in the back who went “Oh snap! That bitch is crazy!!!”

And as a super hero flick, it trounces all over Superman Returns, though that may not be saying much.

- Speaking of movies and comic books, and as also previously mentioned, I didn’t spend hardly any time online last weekend to concentrate on the book (which felt nice btw), so I didn’t keep abreast of all the news that broke during the San Diego Comic Con. But I do know that Peter Cullen, the original voice of Optimus Prime will be reprising his role in the new live-action film! YES! That doesn’t mean the film is automatically saved and will kick ass, but at least its a small sign that at least one person working on the movie truly does care. Also found out how the new special edition re-release of the animated film will be widescreen, which is really odd since every ?expert? thus far has claimed that no such version existed.

- Speaking of cons, and as also stated earlier, I’m going to Otakon the weekend after this, to finally check out the freakshow I’ve heard long about (more than one person has already told me that its basically the same crowd from ICON, even crazier, but all anime). That and show support for MK’s new book of course. Unfortunately, during my self-imposed internet black-out, I totally missed the cut off for pre-registering, which means I’ll have to get tickets on-site. And I keep hearing how last year the line was about 3+ hours long, and how 4,000(?!?!) people got turned away. Great. And unlike the NY Comic Con, Ric ain’t going to be there this year (he’s heading to China to interview some master of kung fu, no doubt for some new Asian cinema book of his) so I can’t mooch of him.

- Back to comics: I’ve come to realize that with, again, due to the book, I’ve become a bit burnt out with video game as of late, so I’ve decided to rekindle my love of the other finer things in life. Movies being one, and comic books the other. Specifically super hero books. I dunno why, but I’ve always been sorta embarrassed about my interest in such things in front of MK; unlike most dudes, I can flaunt and don’t have to hide my love for comics in front of my gf, since she digs them as well, but given that MK’s strictly into the indie, small-press stuff (though she does read some Vertigo titles), I always felt a little weird about it… Though I’m pretty open about my love for Iron Man; back in the day, when he was really cool, he was just like Batman, in the sense that its some crazy rich guy who decided to be a hero, but even cooler since he was also a drunk.

Hence why I’m so happy that I’ve made a new comic book buddy at work! I’ve recently become friends with one of the maintenance guys who’s really into the Marvel/DC stuff, which I’ve been eternally interested in, but just haven’t had the time/money/guts to dive in head first, and who’s gonna be lending me stuff. First up is the new Marvel summer event-book, Civil War. This is just like when I was working at Medieval Times and one of the sales guy would lend me every book he’d buy at. Carlos, the maintenance guy, also has a heavy habit, and blows about $150 month on books. Once again, had to choose between comic books and video games to spend all my time and money on, and in the end, Sonic beat out Spider Man (thanks to that shitty clone storyline).

But hey, I’m still into the small press stuff; I just finished up Girl Stores by Lauren Weinstein, which is pretty fucking rad (I’m also still proud of how her comic making class at SVA dug my Cheap Ass Mr No Penny story the most, over all the other minis she showed them).

- And speaking of my own comics: while paying for a top-loader NES that I bought from some guy at Insert Credit (more on that when I finally get it I guess) via PayPal earlier this week, I realized that people had paid for my mini’s, like months ago, and I never knew, so their money was just waiting there! Fuck, isn’t PayPal supposed to send out notifications and the such?!

- So its Thursday, I’m here at work as I type this, and I’m thinking of just taking off and heading into Jersey. MK right now is selling Italian ices at some state fair and mentioned that if I wanted to, I could work there as well. Last night I ended up chatting with some woman who I guess runs the place and who’s become friends with MK and she mentioned that’s loads of stuff I could do, like sell cotton candy or help run the bumper cars or something. Sounds like fun. I’ve always wanted to work at a fair, ever since I hung out with this one girl in college who used to, and was on acid for almost every second of it (btw, whenever I say I hung out with a girl in college, it means that I secretly lusted after her).

Its so bad that at a time when I need to buckled down and get shit done, I just want to get out of the city and enjoy some fresh air, especially since NYC has been especially fucking shitty hot and humid these days. Or as Mike (O’Connor) put it best: “REALLY FUCKING HOT HOLY SHIT I HATE SUMMER” weather. I was originally supposed to head to WildWoods this weekend to join up with Joe (Simko) and June, but bowed out due to the looming deadline. At least I have the Jersey shore near NK’s neck of the woods.

- Then I figured I could simply have some drinks with Steve (Totilo) tomorrow, but then I totally forgot about the Silver Mt. Zion/Black Ox Orkestar show in Willamsburg that I’m checking out with Mike and Joe (Salina) which is also this Friday night. So as “penance”, Steve instructed me to check out his latest story at MTV news and to check out the accompanying video (which you all should as well). Some might recall how I hung out with him at the Sega/Yakuza event right afterwards a few weeks back.

- As for Saturday, once again I should really be doing some work, but I might take a break and check out a chiptunes show at The Tank that night. It’s the first one that I can recall ever to not feature either Josh or Jeremiah on the card. Truly bizarre… But hey, Virt‘s playing, so it will still be awesome. Plus, I think its the scene of a NYC-IC meet-up, and those are always interesting. And one of the gals showing up is in a sketch comedy troupe, and will be part of the Del Close Marathon that’s happening this weekend at the UCB, so I might catch a bit of that this year as well.

So yeah, I guess there’s still Sunday to get work done. Though (hopefully) by then, I should have the entire run of Liquid Television finally downloaded (I’ve had the torrent running since Tuesday).

… Oh, and perhaps I should also finally mention that this weekend I will finally get the chance to meet face to face with an internet stalker of mine! I’m actually pretty excited. Long story short, there’s this one guy who’s been sending rather nasty emails for a while now, but recently he had a change of heart and confided in me that he’s rather jealous of my success and wishes really bad that he was me. He literally said “You have the life I MUST have” or whatnot. This person has also told me that if given the opportunity to meet me in person, he would assault me. I’m seriously not making any of this up.

Anyway, let’s see what happens. Maybe nothing will go down. Or maybe a fight might take place. Perhaps he’ll be totally nutso and try to kill me? Who knows.

So this might be my very last entry. I do have various video game related links to pass along, but I guess I’ll wait till next time, if a next time exists (hey, I gotta milk this situation as much as can, simply because, aside from it being surreal and hilarious, in the end, nothing is probably going to happen). But real quick, remember the N64 kid? Well, he’s all grown up.

Nerd Rage, Pure And Simple

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

Is it just me, or does it seem as if almost everyone is an absolute fucking dumbass these days? Do you often find it impossible to get even the most simplest of tasks accomplished due to everyone acting all blas?, apathetic, pissy, or just plain retarded? Does it appear that everyone you encounter acts as if like their life is a total living hell, and the only thing they can do at this point is to drag everyone down with them? Basically, why in the hell does no seem to give a shit about anything anymore? Almost everyone acts entitled, yet totally not responsible?

Whether it be the dumb waitress at the restaurant who can’t get your order straight, nor cares, and who later drops a dirty fork on you and doesn’t even act the least bit apologetic (Monday night for me), or the asshole at the insurance company who is of absolutely no help other than to remind you that a large portion of your paycheck goes to nothing, who puts you on-hold for five minutes at a time, every 20 seconds, only because he can, or to take time out to finger his own asshole (yesterday afternoon), or the piece of token booth guy who’s totally oblivious to all the shit that’s going on, and could give a God damn about anything (the most recent instance for myself being last night, more on that in just a moment). Everything’s totally falling apart, leaving everyone feeling angry and helpless, and all many can do is pass the venom forward.

I guess the extreme temperatures as of late aren’t helping. It?s actually okay today, but for the past two days, especially yesterday, have been hell. I live across a power plant in Brooklyn, and just went I got home, a fire had broken out at the facilities. All my downstairs neighbor and I could do was just want the smoke rise, with about 30+ firemen rushing to the scene. We were both looking at it and going “Oh shit, there goes the electricity.” And then I spent the next hour trying to get ahold of MK who was still in the city and Brooklyn bound to warn her of the possibility that my place might loose juice later in the evening. Naturally, I couldn’t get ahold of her when I absolutely had to (cell phones always flake out when you need them the most… like I said, it seems like nothing works properly these days), but thankfully the power stayed on, though despite it pumping out the max degree of cold air all night, all either of us could do is just talk cold showers, lie on the bed, and try to fall asleep while still sweating. Plus I was also happy that the missing cat returned; when Jimmy, my roommate’s boyfriend, went to the house earlier in the evening, to see if those guys had repaired the damage that was done (which they didn’t, of course… once again, no one gives a shit), he called to ask two things: 1) had I noticed one of the cats was missing, and 2) why were there a ton of flies in the downstairs lobby. We both thought the same exact thing, but thankfully the fat fluffy fuck showed up just as Jimmy was heading out and about to call Steph (he hadn’t died from eating scraps of latex which was one of my possible theories behind his disappearance). Not sure how he escaped, nor do I care.

Anyway, New Yorkers are cranky to begin with, but when they’ve been boiling in a subway station, or worse, a subway car with broken AC, fucking forget about it. Yesterday’s heat index was so crazy that a coworker claimed that his train got delayed because the third rail buckled due to the humidity. But yeah, the subway attendant… it was shortly before 9, and I had just dismissed class, and was on the R platform, waiting for the next Brooklyn bound train. Then an announcement comes on the intercom stating that due to a fire in Queens (fucking Queens, always the source of train problems) virtually all trains were either not running or re-routed, meaning extreme service slow-downs. All the yellow lines, the N, R, Q, and W trains, were shut down (I had been there for about ten minutes prior to this, and the whole time a N train was just sitting there, frozen on the express track) and running on the E train, the 7 was out of commission, either the D or F train was not running, but they were on the 4 and 5 lines… or something like all that. Thing is, no one can make out jack shit through the crappy intercoms. So I went to talk to the token booth guy, and to do so you actually have to leave the platform. I asked him where I could catch the R train (the announcement said the F line first, then 4 or 5) but he was replied…

token booth guy: “The R trains are running.”

me: “Where?”

token booth guy: “Here.”

me: “But there was an announcement stating that there’s no R service on the R lines and that its running on the F or 4 or 5 lines. I couldn’t hear the message, that’s why I’m asking.”

token booth guy: “What message?”

me: “…. There was just an announcement on the intercom stating that there’s been service changes.”

token booth guy: “There are no service changes at this time.” (at this point, the guy was getting clearly annoyed because he just wanted to go back to reading the paper)

me: “Listen. There was this announcement… it just played throughout the station… saying that there’s no service on this line. Didn’t you hear it?!”

token booth guy: “Hey, no you listen! The trains are running! One was just here!”

me: “If things are running, then why is that train right there in the middle of the station just sitting there?!?!”

token booth guy: no response

me: “…. Whatever. Okay, can you let me back in?”

token booth guy: “No.”

me: “Why not?!”

token booth guy: “I did not see you come through the turnstile.”

me: “WHAT? MAN, YOU ARE JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHER PIECES OF FUCKING SHIT WHO WORKS FOR THE SUBWAY AREN’T YOUN’T?! YOU JUST FUCKING SHIT ON YOUR GODDAMN ASS ALL FUCKING DAY COLLECTING YOUR UNION WAGES AND COULDN’T GIVE A RAT’S ASS HUH?!?! YOU GOD DAMN PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT…”

Obviously, I had fucking lost it, and I was screaming at the guy through the tiny box in his window. And at the point he started calling the cops, and I knew I had to get the fuck out. So yeah, all subway workers: worthless pieces of shit, every god damn one of them.

So I went topside, and even though I couldn’t really afford it, I knew I had to cab it. And wouldn’t you know, there was absolutely none available. But after a while, I got lucky and scored one. The cabbie had told me that the trains had been fucked up for two hours, since 7, and that all the bridges and tunnels were totally clogged up. Thankfully, this cabbie was a fucking human being who treats others with respect and takes pride in his job. So we had a nice lengthy conversation on how ridiculous and pathetic most people are (he should know… he fucking sees enough people of all different kinds, and every single day). I even ended up giving him a nice five dollar tip for being so cool (see, I’m not always a cheap-ass mr. no penny).

MK was already home when I got there, and aside from being relieved that she didn’t get caught up in the bullshit transit system, I was happy to see that my Play-Asia order had arrived (I figured it lost in the bullshit Brooklyn mail system… again, people who don’t give a shit). Can’t play Zombie vs. Ambulance just yet (I’ll get my system modded when I finally get around to buying KOF XI), but I was able to try out Kuru Kururin Paradise (since its GBA), and it is indeed super awesome (folks at NeoGAF have been building up for ages). And since both DSs were pulled out and in use (MK got to finally test out the Lite), I had the bright idea of doing a PictoChat session since I had never done that before. There’s this saying that no matter who it is, or how hard you try, every first time chat session is going to have at least one person drawing a penis, and I resisted the urge to fall into this trap, but MK couldn’t, and once she did the first one, it became a penis drawing party for sure.

And as for last night’s class, once again, only two students showed up. But it was two different students from the week prior, so that was okay. I basically went over the previous week’s topic, but in a different way (based up on their responses, of course). Highlight of the night? Explaining what the term “non-game” meant.

As for the gaming world at large (mostly videos)…

- So yet another reason why I figured might be a good reason to get a PSP is because of Every Extend Extra, Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s overall of the freeware title Every Extend. The official site just went live, with movies and wallpapers and the such. And here’s both the Japanese and Euro covers (I personally like the Euro version better)…

But was originally something that felt like a return to somewhat Rez-esque territory is not looking so hot. Most folks who played the demo have had numerous complaints, and I gotta admit that the vids have been less than impressive. I must also admit that I’ve never played the original (since I don’t have a PC, I can’t try out every cool freeware game that comes my way), so maybe I’m missing, but it just doesn’t look all together exciting. And this from a guy that thought Trance Mission in Rez is one of the most beautiful things ever.

Anyway, check it out for yourself: stage 1, stage 2, and stage 3.

- Speaking of the Miz, you also have Lumines 2 coming out soon. The list of artists who’s music will be appearing in the game was recently released, and… it totally sucks. Actually, there are a few decent names, like Ken Ishii, Mondo Grosso (nice to see them back), Fatboy Slim (nice to see a song of his finally make it… a track of his was originally going to be in Rez), The Go! Team (that could be interesting) New Order (that should be really promising, actually), and Chemical Brothers (the song is going to be Star Guitar… and that’s plain fucking rad). But then you have Gwen Stefani, Missy Elliot, and… get this… Hoobastank.

Apparently each region is getting their own version, tailored its tastes. Which means in Japan, it’ll be getting the clearly superior version. But also, instead of a skin for each song (a nice, graphical representation for each song that’s in the background for each song), there’s just going to be the music video for the accompanying tune. Hence why I have a beef with the Beck track, which is Black Tambourine. Its a great song and all (actually, its perhaps my fave from the latest album), but something like E-Pro is so much more appropriate, not just song-wise, but the video is practically Rez-like already. Okay, more Vib Ribbon-like, but still…

- I know I keep going back to it, but remember the awesome ending to SEGAGAGA, which turns into a shooter where you blast old Sega systems? Well I totally forgot this, but while perusing the archives, I actually posted about a cell phone version of that part a while ago.

- The web browser for the DS is coming out very soon. For those curious as to how its exactly going to work (such as myself), here’s a demonstration

- Anyone who knows me or reads this site knows that I could really care less about first person shooters. Aside from them giving me horrible motion sickness, I find 98% of them horribly boring. So I gotta admit, this demo of Portal really impressed me.

- Don’t like the Xbox 360′s controller? Well, why not play your favorite 360 games (it’s still Geometry Wars, right?) with the best controller ever: the Sega Saturn pad. And here’s how.

- Time for some stuff courtesy of the Gaming Age Forums. First up, check out this absolutely awesome stroll through memory lane by taking a look back at early builds of games. Anyone who grew up with game magazines in the early 90s are sure to see something that got them all excited as a kid, especially since that was around the time in which the notion of 3D gaming was starting to take shape in everyone’s mind.

Though when I last checked, no one has been able to pass along pics from the very first screenshots that were shown of Mega Man X (it featured X in a city, but everthing was all white and the sky was clear blue with some clouds… I think it was the opening level, which got replaced with a nighttime setting). And also, I rather liked the cel-shaded look of House of the Dead 3.

- Speaking of, check out this super insane deluxe cab for House of the Dead 4. Here’s the GAF thread from which I originally found out about it, with info that’s been translated.

- Here’s something else that’s sorta old, but is news to me this week: if you play Mega Man ZX (which EVERYONE has been raving about in Japan) with Mega Man Zero 3 and 4 plugged in, you get to play their bosses. Awesome stuff. And once again, there’s the NeoGAF thread from which the news comes from.

- Fans of Robotic Alchemic Drive might want to take a look at this: screens from Super Remote Mecha MG, which is sorta like R.A.D. for the DS.

- Want more proof that video game companies don’t seem to give a rat’s ass about us American consumers? In this country, if you register your games with Nintendo, you get… nothing really. But in Japan, you can get cool stuff via their Club Nintendo program. One such thing is Hanafuda cards (a card game that’s been super popular for ages in Japan and Korea… my mom used to play it a lot back in the old country… and before they got into making video games, producing the cards was one of Nintendo’s main things, and they actually still make them to this day), and folks with enough points, which one gets from registering enough games, can cash them in for a special set featuring Nintendo characters. Here’s some pics courtesy (which originated here)…

- Check out this chimp playing Ms. Pac Man. The game appears to be running at its default, slow (a.k.a. easy) speed. Weaksauce.

- And here’s a somewhat cheesy vid made by hardcore Super Smash Bros (so what do you expect). If features Giga Bowser, as well as other elements from the game which can only be accessed with the debug menu, which is opened via a cheat device, like a Game Shark or something. I’m a fan of the game, so I find it neat (and the vid does have some nice touches, like how adult Link disappears when young Link is squashed).

- Time for another cheesy Nintendo fan vid (gee, those two things together? I wonder why…). This one is a compilation made from assorted commercials starring Mario, but it happens to features some rare footage from some Super Mario Bros 3 commercial or anime that’s never been shown here in the States. Plus it features those Toadstool girls from the Japanese Mario vs. Donkey Kong commercial, and they’re pretty hot.

- Remember those pics from the upcoming Animal Crossing anime I posted before? Here’s the teaser trailer. Still looks “eh” to me.

- Here’s a pair of vids (here’s number 1 and number 2) of some dude playing Time Crisis 4 John Woo style (two guns at once). Given that each player has their own screen and foot-pedals… its rather impressive.

- Time for a superplay vid: check out some guy beating Link’s Awakening in just four minutes and twenty two seconds with some pause glitch. Crazy…

- And finally, check out the internet’s newest star: some angry nerd that reviews old NES games. I came across his video reviews from NeoGAF about a week or so ago, and ever since then, they’ve steadily become and more and more visible elsewhere. It’s hard to describe what makes them so entertaining… what he says, his general tone, the logic… anyway, check out what he has to say about Castlevania 2, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, The Karate Kid, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, TMNT, and Back to the Future.

The Simon’s Quest one is easily my favorite (he totally makes me glad that I didn’t play it back in the day). The TMNT one is also really good, with some lines that are just golden (except near the end when he tried to ham it up a bit too much, which is also a problem with some of the other ones). And someone at Insert Credit pointed out an interview the guy recently did.

Though what might just be the absolute funniest part is how some are legitimately upset by what he has to say (as evidenced why I passed them along at the IC yesterday). And granted, idiots just ranting and raving into some web came is hardly original (especially with YouTube around and all), plus nerd humor is 99% of the time uber gay, but everyone once in a while comes someone who just does it right. If he can keep the hamming to a minimum, he just may be my new hero.

- Finally, also from Insert Credit, comes Gamma Bros. Neat game with a stellar soundtrack by the ever excellent Mark Denardo (who does a helluva live show).

… And that’s it for now, as well as for a while now. I’m taking a break from surfing the web and scoping out game news for the next couple of days to concentrate on my book (I’m even on vacation from work during then). I plan on unplugging the internet at home and shutting off email as to not get distracted. Though with the San Diego Comic Con coming up (which is where many of my friends will be, which means even less of a distraction for me over the coming days), I may be tempted to at least check in for a bit, to hear breaking news regarding the Transformers live-action flick; like everyone else, I’ve seen the pic of the new Optimus Prime truck, and am dying to see and hear more. As for the different style, I’m irked, but it could be much worse. At least it?s just a plain-jane truck, and not a Hummer-limo or something else ridiculous or retarded. And I actually think Bumblebee being a Camaro is a smart choice; hey, if he’s still going to be the main human character’s best friend, and if its still a young guy, then it simply makes sense for the vehicle to be something that appeals to a young dude (at least its not all “extreme” and shit). But again, with Soundwave being a helicopter, I know it will never be perfect (sorry, but I ain’t ever going over that). And as bad as things might turn out, I’m still gonna be there for the midnight screening.
