500 Disembodied Link Heads (Part 2 of 2)

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

In this post:
1. Part two of super colossal mega rundown of game related “stuff”.

Okay! Without further adieu, time to dig even deeper into all the good game related headlines and junk that you might have missed over the past couple of weeks! And what time could be any better, since if you’re like me, you’re perhaps desperate to read anything other than Modern Warfare 2, even if it’s old news…

- Actually, here’s my one and only MW2 related item, simply because it features the greatest man alive, Ice T

- Moving on, and I know I talked about her already the other day, but…. how about some more Bayonetta? Those who are currently enjoying the game at the moment, in Japan of course, has been busy unlocking all sorts of wacky outfits! I’m only passing along the only semi-classy one, to ensure that this post is somewhat SFW…

– Remember that Japanese subway ad featuring the lead girl herself, just chillin on a chair? Well, there’s others, and unfortunately they’re not as restrained or relaxed, but are still worth the gander!

- I passed this along already this morning, over at the Life Meter blog (yes, I finally updated the damn thing!), but figured it was worth sharing again; a rather fab illustration for some contest that only got runner-up but should have TOTALLY nabbed first place…

- Then there’s this…

- And courtesy of 1UP is an interview with Bayonetta’s creator, Hideki Kamiya. Not only does Kamiya discuss his latest game but how he basically “screwed up” Resident Evil 2 (remember Resident Evil 1.5?), along with how Okami was “incredibly boring to play” at first!

- Meanwhile, back to scantily clad video game vixens, guess what was 2008′s PSP game of the year? First off, trying to remember anything truly noteworthy for the system in the past four or years is a challenge all in itself, but seriously, and believe it or not, it was Ikki Tousen: Eloquent Fist! On a side note, I love it whenever Hilary comes over and eyes the box art on my shelf, I have to constantly remind her that, yes, they made a Battle Vixens game and its honest to God better than any of the absolutely worthless anime and manga that’s also associated with the franchise. Anyhow, there’s a sequel coming out soon, called Xross Impact, and it looks every bit as amazing as the first title…

… For more pics, simply head on over to Famitsu, though some of it is kinda NSFW! And don’t forget the trailer!

- Also via Famtisu, some new KOF SkyStage screenshots. You want to know why KOF XII sucked? Because there was no Mai Shiranui. And want to know why SkyStage is gonna rock? Because it has Mai Shiranui!

- You guys know I’m friends with Bryan Green, the mind behind Paper Foldables, right? Anyhow, here he is with his latest creation, which all of you can do yourself at home with the right tools: CommanderVideo from Bit.Trip!

- I don’t care how badly this cat-centric game for the Wii bombed. The videos make it look totally awesome, especially the one that has elements of a bullet hell shump. And that final vid, with the cat dodging… classic. Plus, hey Katie, look…

… Actually, according to Kotaku, the launch was that bad.

- Hey, speaking of disasters, I mentioned last time that the PSP Go’s Japanese launch was… okay. Well at the very least, there’s far more reasons to pick up Sony?s digital download only device in Japan than here in America: check out all the stuff that was available at launch. Simply blows away what we have to choose from in America.

Unfortunately I’m not at liberty to name names, but I’ve spoken to more than a few publishers who are more than a little frustrated with Sony and this new PSP initiative. Why are digital copies the same price as physical ones, despite there being less cost involved? Whey don’t they come out the same day as their physical counterparts as well? Ask Sony, they’re the one’s who are making such decisions. Though the one prime reason that immediately jumps to mind is the need to keep traditional distribution channels… i.e the ones who are most threatened by digital distribution, namely GameStop… happy. But then again, as the Modern Warfare 2 debacle as proven, there’s a problem when you give anyone too much power, and the retail chain is effectively a monster that the industry has created themselves.

- Sticking with PSP for a while, as well as Siliconera, how about another Persona 3 Portable update? Which as the previous link indicated, is available now in Japan. And apparently, its a tad bit easier this time, and a lot like Persona 4! BTW, via the forums:

me: “Was gonna make a joke about how I can’t wait to be such a cute piece of ass till I realized she/you are supposed to be like 15.”

Mia: “TOO LATE MATT, IT’S ALREADY BEEN SAID.”

- And here’s all the stuff that came out with the game, as acquired by one superfan

… I agree with the sentiment that Atlus has a lot to choose from when it comes to pre-order bonuses. And it’s about time someone stuck their necks out and be the first to offer a character pillow on American soil!

- Once again, re: GameStop, did you know that they’re the exclusive distributor to some quirky, under the radar Japanese SRPG called Adventures To Go?

And like most people, I find such a move to be totally silly and will be amazed to hear that even a single copy was sold. Or at least hear of a person who was able to find its case among all the scattered Madden and MW2 boxes littering the shelves, let alone one who doesn’t mind that fact that they’ll have to pay full price for a game that’s been gutted (cuz you just know that each store only got one copy), with the case itself being covered in dried ketchup on it for some unexplained reason.

- Then again, if one wants a physical copy of the currently download only Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman, one will have to march on over to GameStop and pre-order one… Because NIS America will actually produce one, provided that they get enough. 1,000 to be exact.

God I hate GameStop and the power it holds. Did I mention that the only good one near me, on Broadway and 105 St is no more? Well, it’s still there, but all the totally awesome people, which actually made shopping there a pleasure, have all either quit or sent to other stores. So in there place is the general assortment of idiots one will find at such store. Awesome.

- After a fairly excellent write-up of both Metroid Prime 1 & 3, which I’m pretty sure I passed along sometime ago, Ishaan is back with his thoughts on part 2, and the upcoming Other M. Which has me exciting like nothing else!

- Sorry to say this, but, the creator of Gundam still hates video games. And for those out there was tried their best to spin things into a positive last time… good luck with that this time around!

- At long last, a reason to mess around with PlayStation Home. At least in Japan, where it’s getting a does of R-Type!

- Sin & Punishment 2 also came out in Japan recently, and here we have the first two parts of the Japanese only Creator’s Voice feature, translated for your convenience! A lot of it is actually focused on the N64 original, which is pretty rad, since I’ve always wondered how that game came out to be in the first place.

- In addition to having the inside track when it comes to stuff going on in Japan, Siliconera is also the first to find totally wacky video game patents. Like this Sony driven idea for a Mystery Science Theater 3000-esque interactive television system.

- Hey, did you know that in Japan that Nintendo has a game in which you can play around with your Mii, a la Tamagotchis?

- About damn time: Nintendo is think of doing demos for their WiiWare service.

- Though one game that I most definitely won’t need a demo for is New Super Mario Bros Wii! Which, btw, only exists because of the massive power that the Wii can only deliver!

- Though have you ever wondered what Super Mario Galaxy would look like in full HD? Well here ya go

- So, what’s Q Entertainment up to these days? Not ports of Meteos, Every Extend Extra, or Rez HD for the PS3, that?s for sure. Though immediately after that message, they immediately mentioned how, if there’s a demand, there might be something after all!

But then it was noted that a Rez HD port on the PS3 would be a ton of work, though how about a PSP port of the original instead? Which honestly makes the most sense.

Though what I want to know is what the hell happened with their plan to introduce and distribute Rock Band in Japan? Time to shoot some emails…

- Tetris chair anyone?

- Then there’s the Tetris dress

- Has anyone picked up System Flaw yet? Correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s the first augmented reality game to hit GameStop, Best Buy, and Toys R Us shelves. Basically, you shoot down enemies that are visible through the DSi’s camera lens. Considering how gaga I am over the idea of ARGs… and how I don’t have a iPhone 3GS (though I haven’t heard of any games out for it like that, though that’s mostly Apple’s fault), gonna pick up a copy first chance I get!

- Guess what else just also came out? The next installment of the Ghosts ‘N Goblins franchise, which believe it or not, is an iPhone exclusive. Despite the fact that I freely blow about $15 a week on iPhone games and apps every single week (no exaggeration), I’m a bit weary this time around. Considering how I can barely play the game, no matter what the platform, as well as how the iPhone frankly sucks for these kinds of games…. gonna wait for the Lite version before taking the plunge.

- Instead, I’d much rather grab every single bizarro Russian Game & Watch clones involving egg catching that’s all over the App Store! Though I’d have to run all over the world to do so.

- Sticking with iPhones for a bit, anyone who?s an avid gamer on the thing must be well aware of all the nonsense that surrounds one of its best games, Edge. I’m speaking of the douchebag known as Tim Langdell, whos is the primary reason why I decided to allow my membership with the IGDA lapse earlier this year. Well for those who might be interested in this dude’s history of idiocy… which includes him doctoring websites, comics, even the cover of a Garfield kids book to then be submitted as “evidence” in a court of law… look and be amazed.

- And despite being involved in iPhone game development, even I had no idea: the piracy rates for Apple’s platform are simply insane. As others have noted, not paying $50 for a game is one thing, but stealing something that’s just $1? That’s a whole different level of low.

- Then again, piracy can have unintended benefits!

- Over at Flickr, some folks are calling this month Novvember. So what’s the extra “v” for? To help spell Vic Viper! And to help celebrate, they’re all creating the seminal Gradius ship out of legos!

- There’s gonna be a Phoenix Wright for the Wii? Sweet!

- I’m generally bored to death with Super Mario cosplay, but not this time

- I’m equally as bored with Katamari humor, but for whatever reason, I kinda dig this cross between Katamari and Sin City.

- One of my favorite gaming blogs that sadly NO ONE talks about is, once again, Rising Stuff. They simply talk about games that seriously not a soul knows exists. Take Project V6 for the PSone for example.

As badly as I want to virtually manage an all girl band (remember my mention of KiraKira?), I think I might want to manage a boy band even more? I just love the concept of battling paparazzi, autograph hounds, and groupies off in RPG-styled battles!

- A couple of notable posts from Original Sound Version; first comes word that the voice of Daytona USA, Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, is not involved with the HD remake. What? Apparently the dude is too busy with other stuff. Lame! But then again, considering how poorly the game is looking thus far, it’s hardly the dream project that many had hoped it would be. At least the original Hornet Gallop #41 is still in the game! As much as I loved Daytona USA, the updated car was a real eye sore…

- As someone who already owns Sega Racing Best, which compiles the top tunes from assorted 4 wheel racers, I’m most definitely interested in Sega’ Motorcycle Music History!

- You know what I REALLY miss? Offworld. Well, it still exists, technically, but it’s no longer just Brandon’s thing, and unfortunately the other Boing Boing writers are somewhat stinking up the place. But he’s still around and contributing on occasion, and half the fun is seeing the vast difference between his posts and that of his colleagues! BTW, has anyone noticed that the little spaceship that was once going up in the sky has now exploded?

Anyhow, check out this fantastic rundown of modern era point and click adventures, which proves that the genre is more than alive and kicking! Then there’s this glimpse at the concept art of Brutal Legend, which I could still care less about, but the art direction is pretty damn amazing…

… Then you have the merging of indie games and indie comics at the Alternative Press Expo, along with another fantastic look at some fantastic video game art, which in this case is Critter Crunch

- Semi-related, and via Destructoid

- Back to Brandon, at least he’s always posting neat things over at his Tumblr, some of if video game related, like this neat Tetris with Soviet Bloc architecture clip.

- Get this: the creator of Katamari has an idea for a FPS and, big surprise, it’s WACKY!!!

“I had this idea for an FPS where the player?s character grows in size, gets bigger and bigger as the game progresses. But as you get bigger some weapons are too small to use, so you have to improvise; maybe throw airplanes at the enemies. That sort of stuff.”

- So Fret Nice is coming out for both the Xbox 360 and PS3? YES. This whole time I thought it was just a PS3 exclusive, and have been slowly avoiding the need to pick up yet another plastic guitar. Though I have been looking for an excuse to get the Guitar Hero 3 Les Paul…

4 Color Rebellion has also a neat little look at Walkie Tonky, also by Fret Nice’s developer. Currently downloading the demo…

- And here we have Pac Man played with Roombas

- Though how does it compare to a raccoon tail that’s controlled with a Wii nunchuck? You tell me!

- If you’ve ever had a seizure while playing a video game, you might be entitled to a cash settlement!

- You know, I had like zero interest in DJ Hero till I saw this gameplay vid. Now… I sorta am!

- Gotta love how observant video game dork are on message boards…. especially in Japan.

- Once before I posted something that Nullsleep broadcasted on his Twitter. Well, here’s the whole thing, which I believe is something he created for school…

- Last time I passed along a bunch of Tiny Cartridge links, but there’s a few I forgot, all of them related to Love Plus! First we have a funny little anecdote involving Goichi Suda tailing some dude as he went to the movies with his Love Plus girlfriend, as told by Hideo Kojima!

Next there’s this somewhat cute, but kinda creepy tale of some guy ringing a bell to bring him good luck with his virtual girlfriend, along with another fellow’s brief interaction with the game, in which he expresses a tiny bit of amazement mixed with fear.

Though all of those pale in comparison with Sankaku Complex’s tale of some guy’s wife who accused him of cheating on her with some virtual other girl, which he kinda was! Careful, there’s a nice big NSFW image right behind that link.

- I also discovered the following via Tiny Cartridge: a fantastic blog that’s all about rare and modified Game Boy carts. I’m totally loving the growing gallery of wacky, Japanese only release…

Screw the R4, M3, all those ugly “modern” flash carts, THIS is how you do it…

- Time for one additional GameSetWatch post: Katie Couric playing Mad Dog McCree!

- And via Sankaku Complex. It’s video game related, I swear! See the Xbox controller?

- I read about the following somewhere else, but didn’t know the specifics and never bothered to actually follow-up with an investigation on my end, so I’m glad Stephen reminded me of its existence: a game in which destroying an enemy means an actual file on your computer is lost.

Though I must say, I was originally under the impression that failing to zap an enemy was what resulted in the loss of data. In either case, why play the game with such a real world risk, but my take makes it a tad bit more inviting and exciting. Or at the very least logical. Oh well.

- I also passed along the following at Life Meter, but once again…

- I really dig this Metroid piece; it just sucks that I have no idea who the artist is…

- Was originally going to pass along the following for a toys and model kit specific post, but since I have this bizarre feeling that this particular entry isn’t long enough, may we well dip into the game related goods. First off is something that’s been posted a zillion times by now, but here it is one more time: a prototype Professor Layton figure!

- I’ve never been a big fan of Ratchet and Clank (there’s just something about the pacing, plus Ratchet is seriously one of the most unappealing platforming leads in recent memory), but these custom statues are simply top-notch

- Now available for pre-order at this very moment is the Rockman & 1-UP Bearbrick Set

… No word when the Protoman one comes out….

- It always goes back to Touhou Project, doesn’t it? You tell me, which is better: this one…

… or this one?

… You also have this, which I’m not too fond of, but then again, I’ve never been all that crazy for nendoroids, which is what they?re modled after…

- Has Ninja Gaiden ever looked cuter? I don’t think so!

- Check out this pretty neat Bridget from Guilty Gear statue

… Remember, it’s still a boy! As well as not real, of course.

- Yet another fighting character, one that I’ve mentioned before a while back, but I never had any pics handy. Till now! Her name is Iroha and she’s one of the new faces in Samurai Shodown…

- Jin Saotome recently struck again, with his best custom Mega Man figure yet, of Air Man!

… Which he sold on eBay for $395.00!!!

- Though back to Legos from earlier, my fave costume job of the lot would have to be Lego Miyamoto on a Wii Balance Board

- A very bizarre scene to say the least…

- Finally we have a nice photo gallery of the just released Aegis from Persona 3 figure from Figma! Instead of just copy and pasting one of their pics, I hope to have my very own in a few days… just got the email telling me that mine is officially one the way!

- And to close things out, how about another look at some of my recent posts over at Heavy.com? Like…

Okay, THIS is now the awesomest video game trailer, ever.

Flute Hero.

The Street Fighter 4 snuggie.

… And yet another fine example of the world of art and video games being best buds: walking around via a 3rd person view, but in the real world.

1. Special guest contributor Joe Salina’s take on last week’s NYU indie game design pow-wow!

Instead of immediately going into part two of my monthly rundown of what’s going on in the world of video games as a whole (for those who might have missed it, here’s part one)… Remember my mention of an NYU game design symposium that I wasn’t able to attend last week, but which Joe Salina was able to? Well, at long last is Joe’s report! Take it away Isfet!
_______________________________________________________________________________

Last Thursday night was absolutely freezing in New York City.?Much worse than anything I could remember in recent history.?The weather, coupled with an absolutely horrible sinus headache, made me reluctant to do much of anything that night.?But a friend, indie game designer Anna Anthropy, along with her shy and subtle concubine, Daphaknee, was in town and ready to give a talk at NYU?s Tisch Center.
?
I arrived around 6:05, just in time to catch the beginning of the show, but just late enough to miss all the free food that had apparently been provided to the audience.?I found Daphaknee (which was easy enough as her outfit seemed to have been created from a rainbow?s afterbirth) sitting in the middle of the rows and took my seat.
?
After exchanging hellos and having my Mega Man Pumas made fun of, the show shortly took off.
?
Anna, also known as dessgeega and also known as Auntie Pixelante, depending on who you?re talking to, was also in the company of designers Messhoff and Cactus, two fairly-well-known guys in the ?scene? who have made these kinds of rounds before. The topic of discussion??Well?themselves, essentially.
?
The discussion/talk seemed, in some ways, to be a ?beginners guide to indie gaming,? with each participant taking about ten minutes to show off some work that would encapsulate who he or she is.?Messhoff and Cactus went the route of the compilation video:? eight to ten minute videos that showed off an array of games, all released, unreleased, scrapped or barely alive.?Anna decided to go through each game individually, giving some narration behind the ideas that fueled or inspired each game.

?
These introductions were fun to watch, but probably not necessary; everyone in the audience seemed to be pretty in tune with these guys or at least indie games as a whole.? But regardless, it?s always fun to see footage of Randy Balma: Municipal Abortionist on a big screen whenever possible.
?
A Q&A session led by moderator Charles Pratt soon ensued.?The questions all seemed rooted in one main concept:?why indie game??Why play them, why create them and where are they going??Some participants were more forthcoming with these answers than others, but one idea seemed to permeate throughout each response:?a desire to create.?The road to creation, though, is probably the most interesting and diverse for each designer.
?
Messhoff claims that a control scheme is absolutely critical at the start of any one of his projects.?From that point on, the game maker and MS Paint jobs start and begin to fill in the gaps of ?game? around his control idea.? Playtesting isn?t necessarily something he worries himself with, focusing primarily on whether or not the game is playable.?If the game is hard, he keeps playing it until he can beat it.
?
For Cactus, the concept, design and controls all come together at once.?If he can?t complete a game within a certain amount of time, he dumps the game, never to be touched again.? Cactus enjoys the fact that he?s achieved a decent amount of success in this field, but, generally he doesn?t care if people actually like his games.?What?s more important to him is that he ends up with a product that meets his own expectations.? Which in all fairness, isn?t that bad of a goal if your tastes seem to be meshing with what people consider ?fun.?
?
Dessgeega goes games that concentrate on pushing a concept, whether literal or metaphorical.?The game might have incredibly difficult platforming, but it?s not a coincidence that S&M themes are prevalent throughout.? Graphics that recall the NES or TG-16 are meant to put the player at a kind of ease, but also to use a kind of video game vocabulary that most people are used to.? For instance, spikes = death.?Plus, Anna adds, ?I really love spikes.?

?
The usage of graphics in each designer?s games are totally deliberate:? in some ways, they?re meant to disorient (see:?Messhoff) and in others they?re meant to casually nudge the player?s sense of nostalgia.? It?s a part of the design process that each designer considers fully before releasing a game into the public eye.? Super Mario Bros. would probably lose something if the graphics were replaced with white lines and boxes.
?
One question, or idea, that seemed to dominate the night, however, was a somewhat inescapable and harsh reality for anyone in any indie scene:?how do you make money?? DO you make money?
?
There were no real answers here.?Each designer would, of course, love to make money from what they do, but the current avenues aren?t totally compatible with how they design games.? Flash, steeped in advertisements, seems to be the easiest way to go about it, but it requires a knowledge of Flash, a language that most of these Game Maker designers describe as less than friendly and less than interesting.? Cactus has dabbled with the idea of designing games for Xbox Live, but Microsoft?s restrictions and taxation don?t make the proposition too inviting.? Messhoff tried charging money at one point, but found that the profits barely made a dent.? Anna was the least resistant to the tyrant known as Flash and, for anyone familiar with ?When Pigs Fly,? has used the language to create some pretty decent stuff.
?
So once again, the designers are left with love.? Without the love of creating, there isn?t necessarily much to be gained in the world of indie gaming.?Even a guy like Cactus, curiously described by Pratt as the ?rockstar of the indie gaming world,? needs a day job.?It?s clear that working for a big game company isn?t something that they?re after, but the pioneers in a relatively new domain are still in the process of figuring out exactly what they have and what might work.

?
Even the presentation of these games is something that no designer is sure of.? Art galleries have been known to show off indie games (chosen seemingly at random), but the typical response is one of confusion.?So the question is, how can these games, especially games by designers like Anna and Messhoff who have created multiplayer-only games, be presented publicly and effectively.?Can the indie game resurrect the arcade??Or at least put it back together in a weird, decrepit, cyberpunk kind of way?
_______________________________________________________________________________

… Unfortunately, Joe was not able to attend that aforementioned indie arcade the following night, despite it being a few blocks away from his apartment, due his sinuses acting up. Though it’s a once a month deal, apparently, so next time it’s up in action, both of us should be able to check things out and file a report shortly afterward.

1. Time once again for a super colossal mega rundown of game related “stuff”.

Well it’s been almost a month since my latest video game news & nonsense link & image dump and a LOT has been going on. I don’t even know where to start really…

- The major headline right now is Modern Warfare 2, which I’ve been told is the biggest release of the year. Guess that makes sense; there’s a special edition Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 coming out for one thing, after all. Deal is, I could care less about the game. Sorry! Just not my cup of tea, considering it’s a FPS plus the material it utilizes, which is modern warfare (duh).

Though I do find GameStop’s decision to break the street date on purpose (select markets across the country, include a few stores in NYC, began selling it over the weekend despite the fact that the game officially comes out tomorrow/tonight at midnight) to a rather intriguing story. The reason is quite simple: assorted small, independent outlets across the country have been selling it ahead of time, and I guess GameStop felt that their thunder was being stolen, hence the preemptive strike.

First off, I can’t believe that many places were breaking the street date to freak a large chain such as GameStop out like that. Unless we’re talking like WalMart or Best Buy, but I can’t see them daring to test their luck with Activision like that. Speaking of, it’ll be interesting to see how they react to GameStop, which is the biggest retail front when it comes to gaming, as well all know. Though I’m betting that it won’t be anything but a slap on the wrist, as they instead go after the smaller guys with ruthless aggression. As for GS stating that Activision saying it was okay to drop the game early, and the latter completely denying any such agreement, what can one say? Both parties have more than demonstrated in the past what bullsh*t artists they are, so there’s no point trying to figure out whose stating the truth.

Hey, I managed to get like three paragraphs out of this! Neat. EDIT: Here’s what a few others had to say about this situation.

- I’m sure everyone’s heard by now that there’s a brand new, bigger/uglier version of the DSi coming out. I’m pretty much the biggest Nintendo fanboy one is going to meet (I have Shigeru Miyamoto’s business card when I met him years back, for a Nick Mag interview, framed for God’s sake), and even I think it’s completely retarded. I mean look at it…

… Where to begin? The new colors are an eye sore, but they’re designed to appeal to an older audience, hence the wine red shade you see here, along with dark brown (seriously, the same color as a Zune?) and natural white (how different is it from the current white?). Speaking of older people, that’s where the larger screen comes in, since the elderly have a hard time seeing. But the resolution will be the same, so expect games to look somewhat worse. Oh, and goofy new touch pen, that’s just gigantic. But there’s also a second stylus, one that’s closer to the regular one we’re used to, but still kinda bigger. Point being, there’s now two potential things to lose! The shape of the system itself has been slightly altered, and not for the best… plus the battery life is better than the DSi, but still not as good as the DS Lite. Wonderful.

- It’s actually been somewhat of a rough time for Nintendo. As most have also probably heard, the head honcho of Nintendo has flat out admitted that things could be going better for the Wii, which has finally begun running out of steam in Japan. But if one stops to think about it, and considering all the stiff competition they’ve had to face, the system did pretty damn well for itself. Plus, I’m definitely more optimistic for and interested in New Super Mario Bros Wii than Sankaku Complex, but given how much I appreciate their candor when it comes to video game news reporting, I’m certainly not going to hold it against them.

But like I said over at Heavy, when supposed Wii 2 specs were leaked, I wouldn’t be surprised if all the major guns were being prepared for that end, since all seems unusually quiet on the Wii 1 front.

- Sticking with Sankaku Complex for a bit, I could pass along the headline of Bayonetta getting a perfect score from Famitsu (for the Xbox 360 version at least) from pretty much any news outlet, but where else would it feature such saucy fan art? It’s also nice that they pointed out that Uncharted 2 didn’t score as high, even though it maybe should have.

I know folks are really jazzed for this game, and so should I… but I’m not, The demo was okay, but certainly didn’t knock my socks off. Was never a Devil May Cry nut to begin with and doesn’t help I’d imagine. But hey, the girl gets constantly naked while fighting baddies, which more or less means I have to pick it up!

- Then there’s news of how the PS3 port of Ninja Gaiden is not so much better than the 360 version after-all apparently, plus pretty much everyone knows by this point that the PS3 port of Tekken 6 is a slow as hell when compared to the 360 version. Many also believe that the graphics are better on the MS machine, which is funny since the arcade game was based upon Sony hardware. Again, I can’t really tell because of my SD set! Plus, as annoying as the load time as…. more like revolting actually… the 360′s pad is far worse, so I’ve been playing the PS3 version almost exclusively at this point.

- On the flip side, I love how SC really loves to rub salt wound into those who played Tales of Vesperia for the Xbox 360.

- They’ve also been all over the PSP Go, primarily its debut in assorted regions. Which in Europe and Australia, was not very good. Though regarding it’s horrible first showing in Japan, SC somewhat jumped the gun; day one sales were dismal, to be sure, but first week sales were respectable enough to get a decent portion of that sales pie that they show at Kotaku each week. As for how it’s done in America… to honest, haven’t heard anyone quote any figures, which is actually pretty bad. I personally don’t know anyone whose the least bit interested, but it almost doesn’t matter; so long as it fares will in Japan, the system will survive. After all, remember when for the longest time, NOTHING was coming out here in and the system itself was just collecting dust on store shelves? The reason why it stuck around was because of Monster Hunter back home, plain and simple.

- Get this: the youth of Japan are becoming increasingly disinterested in cars, and guess what the culprit is? You guess it: video games. At least according to Toyota! Nice to know that car companies aren’t just headed up by morons in America!

- I know it’s a eroge title, which is definitely not most people’s cup of teas, but it is sorta mine, plus there’s a really cool looking mech…

… I’m speaking of Deus Machina Demonbane, and one can find additional images here, but careful, cuz they’re definitely NSFW.

- Related: for those who want something similar, but from the past, i.e. animu girls circa the 80s and 90s getting molested/getting it on should definitely take a gander at the PC-98 eroge classics gallery. Again, NSFW.

- Time from something from “Japan” that’s actually from Rockstar: for those who haven’t seen it by now, here’s a parody anime that’s contained within the new GTA DLC, The Ballad of Gay Tony, called Princess Robot Bubblegum.

Now, I’m usually a BIG fan of all the pop culture parodies in GTA; despite thinking part 4 is a piece of crap, I still like to watch television in Niko’s apartment or simply drive around while listening to the radio (granted, I’d enjoy myself far more if I wasn’t stuck in Brooklyn the entire time), but this one simply falls flat for me. Granted, some of the points are spot on… too bad they’ve been made like ten years ago to death. Overall, not very creative.

- Back to Bayonetta real quick: the creator is a officially a cool dude in my book cuz he wants another Afterburner!

- Remember when the creator of Katamari stepped away from designing games to design playgrounds? At long last, one of them is finally happening!

- As previously noted, I’m currently digging into Forza 3, though even almost a month into things and I’ve barely scratched the surface. Like it’s mind-blowing custom editor

… Meanwhile, in Japan

- I also mentioned last time how the Blip Fest 2009 is looking for donations. Guess what, they met their goal of five grand! Awesome. So things are definitely a go, and for those who haven’t had a chance, the official website is life with the guest list thus far.

Oh, and in addition to the fine folks who opened up their wallets, Gaijin Games, the creator of the Bit.Trip series is also sponsoring the event! Also, I think I’m officially more excited for Void than the WiiWare version of Cave Story at this point, as crazy as it might sound. Here’s a nice long look at the title, which was just released in Japan, for those who are interested.

- Good news for those who haven’t heard yet: Muscle March is coming to America! Too bad it apparently sucks, but I’ll download it anyway.

- At least Tomena Sanner is coming out as well, which looks to be far superior. It looks like Canabalt, but with dancing!

- Then you have XSEED’s decision to bring out KORG DS-10+ in America! Guess the original did well enough.

- It’s been reposted to death, by I don’t care, because Kojima and his crew are such f’n bad-asses….

- Oh God, I want these classic Sega consoles as Zippos in the worst way…

… But considering my financial situation at the moment, along with how I don’t smoke, I honestly can’t justify the purchase, especially at $156 a pop. Perhaps I’m not big of a Mega Drive/Genesis fan after-all?

- Needless to say, I’m not as into the Namco ones. Alight, that’s a lie; the Xevious is sexy as all hell…

- But what I really, really, REALLY want is an English version of French gaming mag Amusement! Or simply a copy of the latest issue!

… I find the N97 being shot through the wall funny on SO many different levels that only other cell phone geeks will understand. Or simply Josh.

- As folks already know, I’m somewhat involved in iPhone development as a game designer. Which for me involves drawing plenty of little fake screenshots. Hence why I might need one of theses

… I realize the DS and PSP ones are far more useful, and the iPhone one is a bit pointless, but still…

- Time for a stop at… you know where. Your favorite place and mine, Tiny Cartridge! First up, a few anecdotes from those men and women who are otherwise known as Nintendo gameplay counselors. Fun-fact: I only called them once as a kid, and that was to figure out how to beat Dr. Wily’s final form in Mega Man 2. My pal Brian and I tried every trick in the book… along with every fallen robot master’s weapon… we could think of, but nothing. Except for one of course!

Though the real highlight was, later on in the evening (this was a sleep over btw), when the TV went on the fritz and the image went blank, I was still able to continue playing the first level of Gradius, based on sound alone! Much like the blind person playing Zelda, as noted in the link. Oh, and discovering that Brian’s father was a sleepwalker and he almost crushed my face with his foot. But anyway…

- Remember me mentioning some game called Ghost Trick a while back, and how I said it was one of the few stand outs of TGS, but which no one gave a rat’s ass about? Except for the TC crew of course. Well, here’s a better look. Fingers crossed that it’ll make it out here in America!

- Hey Katie, this video of a fat family with a DS harassing an equally plum chick (or perhaps a dude dressed as a chick) in a hot pink dress on a subway is just for you.

- Speaking of mass transit, I absolutely LOVE this piece…

… Be sure to check out my rambling on and on about subway gaming in the comments!

- The King of Pop may be dead, but lives on as a cartoon cat in your iPhone!

- I must agree: the TMNT game, no matter how true to its roots Ubi Soft claims it to be, looks like complete ass. I love how its so crystal clear that the dude never played the original arcade titles, otherwise how could he describe such “improvements” like the camera zooming in so you can get a better look at the enemy as to attack more precisely instead of just hitting the attack buttons mindlessly with a straight face? Also, the idea of cut scenes molded after the original b&w comic style would work FAR better if they didn’t animate so ridiculously.

- Check out this dude playing Contra 4 upside down.

- So for Halloween, TC posted a bunch of videos featuring these Japanese girls playing Nanashi no Game, and they were fairly hilarious. This one is perhaps my favorite, though I guess the game is ultimately not that scary, since the system was never dropped due to extreme fright or anything like that.

- It wouldn’t be a Tiny Cartridge link dump without a YMCK mention, right? Though this song is far nicer, IMHO. Too bad there’s no video!

Though I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; the YMCK track from Katamari Forever is actually one of the weakest songs from the entire soundtrack, which is really saying something! Though it’s not annoying like that one song that plays at the level that I’m currently stuck at. Yes, I’m actually stuck in a Katamari game.

- I also love how much they love Little Red Riding Hood?s Zombie BBQ so much, mostly because it’s one of my fave DS games as well! Definitely the thing I ever found in Circuit City’s $5 bin. Anyhow, in addition to posting some semi-NSFW concept images, here’s also another look at the spiritual sequel, Zombie Panic In Wonderland

… Good God, Snow White for the win.

- I’m also ashamed to admit that I too have played Umihara Kawase DS and it was also on a flash cart. But I also now know what the problem is, hence why my actual copy is on the way! Though I was always going to get it… simply downloaded a copy because I just couldn’t wait!

- Regarding Cave Story for the Wii one more time, it’s still being worked on. That’s good to hear. Not that I’m losing my patience of anything, I just want to know what the hold up is! Then again, so long as it comes out totally perfect, everything’s cool, and besides, it’s not like I already don’t have seven thousand games to keep me occupied for the time being!

- So the art in Reflection is getting a (minor) upgrade? THANK GOD.

- Hey! The first episode of the Inazuma Eleven anime, and subtitled no less! Sweet.

- I had no idea that they made an official Elevator Action/Dexter’s Laboratory hybrid for the Game Boy Color!

- It’s cosplay time! Check out this chick as Princess Zelda

… Sorry to be negative, but I’ve always been quietly turned off by pictures of people dressed as their fave characters when they’re professionally taken. Don’t know why. I guess I just believe it’s far more charming when the person has that look in their face of “hey, someone recognizes me!!!” from most importou pics taken at the floor of some convention.

- Speaking of, as most folks know, I love scouring the web for whatever batsh*t insane imagery I can toss over at the random pics thread at the forum. One of my many sources are about a dozen or so Tumblrs, and last night I discovered that one of my shots, taken from this past summer’s Otakaon, has been making the rounds! I’m talking about this one…

- Going back to all hallow’s eve, here’s yet another better late than never: screw that guy with the big polygonal head (you all know what I’m talking about); by far the best game related costume this year was this

- I’ve tried to make it loud and clear that I am not an Earthbound/Mother fan, but I know plenty of folks who are, so in case they didn’t know, their source for all their Earthbound/Mother related goods has some new junk to buy!

Though I am happy to see them branch out a bit, into the realm of Super Mario RPG.

- And how about some Silent Hill coplay?

… Though truth be told, the nurses featured here are far more authentic. Though the real star is this…

- Semi-related: some guy went temporarily insane and thought he was playing a game of Silent Hill when he cut the power at some hospital. The dude thought he could acquire a toothbrush by pulling various levers and switches, which controlled the building’s electricity. Crazy! Also, which game is that particular puzzle from, does anyone know?

- Since we’re here already, may as well stick around GameSetWatch for a bit! For starers, a Tetris birthday card! The Pac Man one is sorta neat as well.

- Yes, I actually bothered to download a copy of .detuned when it came out the other week. It was fun for like three minutes.

- And yes, I took have played Small Words. Definitely lives up the incredible hype it’s been getting across the board!

- if you’ve got a kid whose a gamer, but is also totally spoiled brat, a book filled with quotes from rock stars, skateboarders, mixed martial artists, cartoonists, and ninjas should set him straight.

- While we wait for the Asteroids flick to finally come out, here’s a cute little video featuring ships from the game, in love.

- Katie, here’s yet another reason why you might want to get an iPhone: Jeff Minter is working on a game for it!

- Are kidding me, there’s yet ANOTHER Dreamcast game coming out?!

- GSW is always dependable when it comes to featuring videos that highlight the glory days of trade events, circa the 90s. First there was the Star Fox laser light show, and now here’s the Killer Instinct dancing girls!

- An OutRun arcade cab turned into a real driving machine?

- And Segata Sanshiro on the Conan O’Brien show?

- A couple of items I originally tipped GSW on (see, I’m not just a taker, I’m also a giver!): here we have the creator of PaRappa the Rapper and Vib Ribbon singing a futuristic version of Nat King Cole’s Unforgettable!

- Plus have you heard that Hideo Kojima (along with the character designer from Evangelion) are going to be judges for a Twilight art contest over at Pixiv?

- On a semi-related, and equally random note: for just one day, out of the blue, Gainax decided to post this fav Famicom related piece of art on their welcome page

- Whereas George Harrison’s son recently went on record to state that the upcoming Rock Band 3, which he’s working on, will teach gamers how to play the guitar (umm… okay), here’s something that seems slightly more plausible: a DS title that goes over the basics of how to play the piano!

- Once again, the best regular column that GSW has going on at the moment is easily Sound Current, with it’s awesome in-depth look at the movers and shakers in the world of game music, especially in Japan. Been meaning to provide a review of my own, regarding the live DVD, but in the meantime, here’s a fantastic first hand account of one of the recent Persona live music concerts with plenty of observations and analysis. I just wish there was a higher res version of this pic…

- Then you have this equally amazing behind the scenes look at the Mega Man chiptunes tribute album that came out at TGS. Like I said before, I have the CD and it’s well worth hunting down, if only for the fab Snake Man cover.

- On a related note, over at 1UP, here’s a great write-up regarding the Street Fighter tribute album that came out some years ago. Though as awesome as Takenobu Mitsuyoshi and Yasunori Mitsuda’s remixes are, the clear star is Yoko Shimomura’s beautiful reworking of the Dhalsim stage music.

- Back to GSW, where else are you going to go for news on the hottest indie releases? As a big fan of N+, I’m most definitely jazzed for Office Yeti!

- Then there’s Igneous, which looks like either Marble Madness or the morph ball portions in Metroid Prime on steroids!

- Freeq is an interactive radio drama that’s coming soon to the iPhone (provided that they raise enough money of course), and considering how much I love FMV games on the system (I kid you not, the new Suicide Girls game is loads of fun), I’m all for any kind of wacky new genre! Anything besides tower defense, please!

- Also, Mon & Bot, Zeit≤, and Auditorium… with the later two looking suspiciously like entries in Something Awful’s list of most promising bullsh*it indie games for 2010! Just saying.

- So Chris Kohler went vintage/thrift game shopping this past weekend and guess what he picked up? An old SNES back-up device!

I personally never owned one, but I spent a lot of time messing around with my buddy Rod’s. Time for another history lesson as it relates to the New York City game scene: before J&L and Penguin Village/Initial D/whatever the hell it might have been called in the early 90s were legit businesses that sold legit copies of games, their entire business were based on such devices. To purchase a game, you’d basically leaf their a folder that had all these names of games, pick one, and then pay for a floppy disk that had whatever title contained. I forget how it all came crumbling down… someone blew the whistle on them by calling the FBI which raided every party involved. Some say it was one of the two engaging in some dirty trickery, which backfired on themselves as well, others state that it just some random pissed off customer, who can say at this point. But yeah, I’d rock Rod’s Game Doctor for hours on end, mostly to play Pop’N Twin Bee!

- And here we have Chris hanging out with of my fave, all-time game creators, that being Kenji Eno, with whom he ate curry with. Jealous? Damn straight I am. BTW… You, Me, and The Cube is AWESOME, everyone with a Wii needs to download the game ASAP. Also… I thought Kenji has been making games for a little while now, for the iPhone? Hmmm…

- This piece of Star Fox fan art is pretty damn hot, if only because it features the arwing as it originally looked in the first title, which we can all agree was far and away the best one, right?

- Not sure what the story is with this one, but via PixelStyle

- Same here, all I know is that it’s simply beautiful

- I initially thought this pixel heavy vid was about hot dogs and buns, by the looks of the preview screenshot, but it’s actually about… vibrators and vaginas! Kinda NSFW btw!

- The biggest problem with waiting a month to pass along cool links that’s been collected over that time is how, by the time you get around to talking, certain things are no longer there. Like the blog Mad Mario for example, which mysteriously disappeared the other week. At least we still have this…

- And I wonder if this person’s Trigger Heart Exelica figures are still available for sale?

- Thanks to The Drunken Samurai (I believe) for passing this along: the very best of the very worst of the crappy Tekken anime.

- BTW, special thanks to Ollie who runs Mecha Damashii for saving me some money. I told him I was gonna grab the set of VIdeo Game Robotics figures that I mentioned a whiles ago, but me explained to me how the overall quality was crap, especially the Border Break figure, which was what I had my eyes on the most! And that really bites. Though he mentioned Leyno and Valken ones are still pretty decent, so guess I’ll just have to track down those two individually.

At least there’s this

- Though I’m still totally into gashapon, so next up for purchase is this hawt looking Phantasy Star Zero set featuring nothing but girls!

- And finally, for those who haven’t been exposed to its brilliance quite yet, check out part 2 of hiimdaisy’s Persona 4 comic!

… But wait, there’s more!!! I’ll have part two of my rundown either tomorrow or Wednesday, though before that will be Joe Salina’s report from that NYU game thing which went down last Thursday. Plus Katie’s got a review on tap, as do I! Stay tuned!
