Fun-Fact: Santa’s Mom Is Hot

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

In this post:
1. Tis the season to figure out certain shmups work, learn how to cook an egg, & hang with ninja turtles.
2. A couple of pics of some of the AWESOME stuff that’s been showing in my mailbox up as of late.
3. And a look at the potentially next great video game zine!

Lots and Lots and LOTS of Purple Bullets

As expected, it’s been a busy past couple of days…

- First and foremost, learned a lot this week. On Tuesday night I finally had Espgaluda’s system broken down for me via Dave Mauro. As a result, been playing it like crazy ever since. Well, until recently that is, but I’ll get to that in just a few. Unfortunately, Dave was not able explain to me how Mushihime-sama works exactly since he doesn’t know either!

He also went over all the differences between Horri and Sanwa parts, since I’m officially in the market for arcade sticks. I’m looking to get something that’s PS2-compatible since I now have a pair of PS2 to Xbox 360 converters, which Dave also explained how they worked. Finally, was able to pay the guy for the deep discount copy of Left 4 Dead 2 with… what else… a spare Dreamcast I had lying around.

And on Wednesday night I finally learned how to properly cook eggs thanks to Dave Roman’s sister Michele. In the end, Naomi’s instructions to Sunny in MGS4 on how to make them sunny side were fairly accurate, but nothing was mentioned regarding prep. My main problem apparently was been how I’ve been using the wrong temperature all along! Among a few other details, of course.

Though the real highlight, aside from catching some random showing of Pee Wee’s Big Adventure on cable (which is better now than ever, btw), was how I had to make damn sure that I didn’t spill the beans regarding her surprise birthday party in just a few days. As her husband Rob would later explain to Michele’s brother, his wife Raina, Katie, and myself at the actual thing, I was the final hurdle so to speak. And granted, I have a penchant for babbling, but I consider myself someone who is somewhat careful with his use of words, believe it or not! Grammar, of course, is an entirely different story.

- As for what didn’t happen last week, was supposed to check out Dark Void on Wednesday in the afternoon. Was gonna sit down the producer and finally get some hands on time with the game, and planned on passing along all the juicy tidbits in this exact entry. But long story short, didn’t go down, though I did get a copy of DiRT2 for my troubles!

- And the day before, I finally sold Katie’s eMac to some dude on Craigslist, which she no longer needed thanks to her recently acquired and still sparkly fresh MacBook. To prove what a total Apple goon I ultimate am (despite all my rage towards fellow users of OS X), I’m kicking myself for not talking some parting shots of the machine; still kinda miss my own eMac which I sold over a year ago.

I suppose my bond was mostly developed due to the fact that it was the poor person’s G4 and had to defend it quite a bit; I fondly recall all the reticule over at YayHooray when admitting to the graphic design snobs that rule that roost how I was correspond via something other than a souped up G5 with 8 gigs of ram. Granted, each model had one stupid hardware issue after another, they never seemed to play nice with Tiger for whatever bizarre reason, and that gorgeous flat CRT screen from Sony was still never quite as good the iMac G3′s, but still… at least the whole thing looked hella sexy. As well as way too big and bulky, hence why we had to get rid of the thing, to make room.

- Friday night was the aforementioned surprise party for Michele, and as somewhat implied, it thankfully went as planned; she totally didn?t see it coming! And yesterday was the annual holiday cartoon marathon at Dave & Raina’s. In years past, there used to be live action fare as well, but a rule was made saying it had to be animated or bust. Needless to say, I was slightly disgruntled that I wasn’t able to pull out my SCTV Christmas DVD, but the surprise Gumby holiday episodes more than made up for things. My fave was the one in which the big red guy gets ill (the sickly thin Santa was very depressing looking, and therefore ultra effective), so Pokey calls a witch friend of his to deliver presents to all the world’s good little boys and girls instead. Sorry, no Hanukkah Harry here I’m afraid.

We also saw the Fat Albert Christmas special (I had forgotten how morbidly obese Fat Albert really was), the Back To The Future Christmas animated special (note to self: track down the Alf Tales one for next year), the long-time classic Frost The Snowman (which I had never seen before!), a wacky animu called Mi Santa or something to that effect (this dude is named Santa cuz he was born on Christmas Eve, but hates Xmas cuz his parents were never around, and is harassed by some chick who’s also named Santa and happens to grows voluptuous tits and ass when she encounters someone that embodies the holiday sprit, or something to that effect), a couple of recent Disney CGI offerings (including one featuring the talent of Dave Foley and was surprisingly decent), and a stop-motion epic from Rankin & Bass called The Life And Times of Santa Claus. It would take too long to explain this particular Santa origin story, but the most important thing is how his dad is basically Saruman, from the Lord of The Rings, and his mother is a fairy, a very hot one at that. And while it wasn’t as flat-out insane like the Cabbage Patch Kids or My Little Pony specials from years past, the live-action TMNT one that Steve Flack brought over was pretty up there (enough for me not to mind the bending of the so called rules). Instead of explaining it, why not check it out for yourselves?

- Thus the holiday party season has officially started! There’s a bunch more coming down the pipeline, but it sucks to say that all the rest have the same basic theme: thank f*cking God 2009 is coming to close. And it sucks because it’s true; this year has been a total headache and heartbreaker for virtually everyone, including myself. Though next week’s shindig is a party of a different sort, Blip Fest 2009! Which again I’ll be covering for GameSetWatch, and which again everyone should definitely check out! As previously noted, I’m actually super psyched that the card is mostly new names, though some battle tested favorite will be on-hand, mostly the rock solid local dudes, like Nullsleep, Bit Shifter, and Glomag. Though no Anamanaguchi, which is perplexing to say the least.

I’m also eager to see some familiar faces yet again like Brian, formerly of click-stick fame, as well as the creator of Fez himself, Phil Fish! Simon from Gamasutra & GSW is also rolling into town, but just for the next few days and will actually be leaving when Blip gets underway! Oh well. Adam from Attract Mode is also coming to NYC in a few weeks! I’ll be giving him and his wife a full tour of all the game related hot-spots of the Big Apple, though considering how things are these days, that should last all of fifteen minutes.

- Speaking of, especially since Adam has become such a massively supportive force behind it, production of the third installment of the fort90zine is well under way! Finally found a super fab cover artist and even more folks will be contributing their game related insight and anecdotes this time around. It’s gonna be the best issue yet, by far. But before continuing on with the subject of zines…

- Guess what the mail guy dropped off a few days ago?

… Yup, my copy of Mushihime-sama Futari FINALLY arrived from Play-Asia (I was honestly expecting it to show up in January after hearing about this), and I even managed to snag the DLC card as you can see! Haven’t used it yet since I find it so pretty and almost don’t want to ruin the thing. Plus, I tried paying for the additional mode myself and was denied for some reason; normally it makes sense that one could not purchase content from Japan with American points, but dmauro was able to (who unfortunately didn’t get a copy with the card, despite pre-ordering his well in advance). Then again, I’ve heard reports that Black Label has some slowdown issues, and it’s not like I’m bored with the twenty or so modes the stand-alone title already provides.

But yeah, stopped Espgaluda like a bad habit once Futari arrived, and ever at this early point, I have to say that it might be one of my all-time favorite shmups of all time! The music alone is heads and tails above everyone else, save Radiant Silvergun (which is still the king in every category, to the point that it’s positively unfair to compare it to any other shooter, period). Anyhow, also got this…

… Been meaning to get some Polytron threads for some time now, but it was the chance to get the limited edition Fez soundtrack that finally got that ball rolling…

… Too bad it’s a mini-CDR, so I therefore can’t stick it in my slot-loading iMac! Oh, and this showed up as well…

… Yup, my very own original piece of art from Shintaro Kago! I ended up placing an order shortly after last time while crossing my fingers. Though what helped the most was me explaining to Kago my situation, hence why he put it in a metal frame, ensuring that it couldn’t be shoved in my tiny has hell mail box, even if the delivery goon tried. And as you can see, it’s simply beautiful.

- As what else didn?t happened/show up, any guesses? The Rise statue from National Console Support. Was promised an email or phone call one week after my last conversation, which didn’t happen of course. And was told the same story: haven’t heard from the distributor and blah, blah, blah. My biggest beef was once again how I was charged full price many moons ago when it was supposed to be a pre-ordered, and you generally get charged when the item finally comes out and is on is about to be shipped. Well, was told that’s how it works with credit card orders, but not with PayPal, cuz that’s just not how PayPal works. And this person was right. Still, was not very confident with the assurance with how my item was on its way, eventually. I almost came close to canceling my order entirely and just get something else (I have way too many plastic little girls littering my apartment as is), but a few days later I finally got notice that it was at long last headed towards me. Though they also asked for extra cash, since the American dollar had grown considerably weaker since March. lol. Maybe due to me waiting this long, and the negligible amount that was requested, I simply went ahead and decided to accept. Though I’m fairly certain that I won’t be doing business with NCSX anytime soon.

… Actually, one other last notable item did arrive, though over a week ago. Which I only recently finally finished reading!

Review: exp.

There’s a new video game zine in town and it’s by Mathew Kumar. When you open up it up, there’s an introduction from Kumar himself that begins with: “exp. is an experiment.” Which is immediately followed by an admission that he’s not trying to brainwash everyone into thinking that he’s Gods gift to video game journalism and all that nonsense, but just attempting to do things a little bit different. In the end, the guy is no bullsh*t artist.

First and foremost, the dude simply gets the zine format, as illustrated by the actual product itself. Everything from the choice cover stock to the fonts used, it’s all spot on and expertly executed. Yet at the same time, exp. is laid back and fluid, never once feeling forced or over calculated. The presentation is extremely minimalist and no-nonsense, but simultaneously warm and inviting, not at all coarse.

Well, what about the writing itself? Equally terrific. Again, “experimental” is not some empty promise; one stand out is his opener that centers around Trials HD, in which the game’s own peaks and valleys are mirror by Kumar’s struggles to find the perfect words. It’s practically poetry, I guess? Full disclosure: Kumar’s work in exp. I believe are examples of what some would consider “new games journalism”, most of which I totally hate. But that’s because most of it isn’t written by people with his sensibilities; for me, reading exp. was like being dragged to a poetry club… I HATE poetry by the way… and you hear one douchebag after another after another, all of whom simply reinforce your bias. But then that one guy takes the mic, either the one guy who gets it, or simply speaks your language, probably both, and all of sudden you’re in a terrific mood!

The true test though is when the subject is games that I could normally give a rat’s ass about, and Kumar managed to make me care about both Red Faction Guerilla and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Though my absolute favorite was hearing him talk about how he would improve Super Metroid’s controls. Mainly cuz I myself have never been a fan of it either, though that’s not to say that I necessarily agree with his take on them!

exp. feels like an honest to God start of something new, even if Kumar has somewhat downplayed this possibility. But more than it’s potential down the road, it’s the timing of it’s arrival in the here and now that I find most intriguing, since there’s something else on the horizon that actually has promised to be the medium’s savior. Though I’ve already given them way too much attention, so less said the better I suppose! It all comes down to this simple question: you still feel like saving your pennies for $20 worth of hot air and ego or just $5 for actual substance? You know the answer, and it can be found at the official zine homepage.

And BTW

Was planning on repeating the same pattern from the past couple of posts, in which I open with a bunch of personal notes and then follow that up with a big round-up of links from across the web, or perhaps just my own slice of the internet pie. But I’ve got three different deadlines to mind, so I’d better cut things short while I have the time. Though I hope no one minds a few quick and dirty mentions from my day job…

- The lame stuff people will do to get gamers to buy stuff or make them laugh.

- Say hello to Mega Man 10 and goodbye to 16 years of fan speculation and fan fiction plus a blown opportunity. Seriously.

- Chariots of Mortal Kombat.

- Yet another reason to hate that friend of yours that spams your Facebook wall with constant FarmVille updates: cuz they’re potentially in cahoots with the insurance companies that want the Obama health care bill as dead as a doornail.

- And the Power Glove Handjob.

… And this has NOTHING to do with anything, but once again is the YouTube vid I’ve been most obsessed with the past couple of days: for fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and apple juice, and everything else.

Cheat Codes Won’t Save Your Soul (Part 2 of 2)

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

In this post:
1. You’ll never guess what game I’m totally into at the moment.
2. Highlights from a rather boring past couple of days.
3. And another big batch of highlights from the wonderful world of the internet and video games.

Hey, I Kinda Like Grand Theft Auto Now!

For ages now, I’ve been promising a big pile of reviews; problem is, as soon as I’m close to finishing one game, I immediately get sidetracked by something new. The latest culprit is, believe it or not, The Ballad of Gay Tony. Yup, the new GTA 4 expansion. Which I’ve been morbidly curious about ever since Stephen Glicker mentioned on Twitter how there’s a blow-job scene, something that NOBODY has made mention of. Which either says that video games as a whole really come far over the years, to the point where such antics is hardly noteworthy, or how no one gives a rat’s ass about GTA anymore. Maybe both? Anyhow, and this is coming from a card-carrying GTA hater btw, I’m actually really digging it! Mind you, only just started, but having things kick off in Manhattan this time around as more or less guaranteed that I’ll enjoy this one more than GTA 4 proper. I also haven’t been offended by the game’s portrayal of gays thus far, plus the new lead Luis is every bit as engaging as Niko was. And I must also admit, as turned off as I was with the first glimpses of the fake animu via YouTube a whiles back, the actual episodes that’s in the game did manage to make me chuckle. Hey, I dig TV Funhouse-type humor.

So if I end up beating the game, I’ll pass along a review, though I should really work on my two cents re: New Super Mario Wii first, as pointless it might be. After-all, virtually everyone’s played it and therefore knows how generally awesome (and sometimes not so awesome) the whole shebang is. But hey, various folks value my opinions, which is certainly nice! But truth be told, I think I’ve been sorta slacking when it comes to this blog as of late; I’ve mostly been just compiling and regurgitating news that’s already out there, and while I have been told that I’m doing a great service for those that don’t have the time to check everything first-hand themselves, I just haven’t written that much original content as of late and feel kinda crappy about that. Not helping is how my life, at least the stuff I can share online, is hardly exciting. A few (mostly) non-video game highlights from the past couple of days…

- In addition to Katie picking our cat’s nose and successfully extracting the dried (and needless to say disgusting) dried bugger in her nose, she just joined a local cat colony. Basically, she’s going to help trap feral cats for this group (there’s apparently a TON in our parts, which again is the very northern tip of Manhattan), who will then fix and try to adopt them out. Just the very idea of my girlfriend setting up some trap and then hiding in the bushes for some kitty cat like an old Looney Tunes cartoon fills me with so much job that I can’t even being to describe.

- After struggling for what felt like an eternity, I finally have my iMac working in tip-top shape, mostly by wiping out the hard drive, re-installing the OS, plus properly re-allocating and tightening up various bits and pieces, all stuff I was too lazy to take care of after my first Snow Leopard install and which I obviously paid the price for. Still not happy with all the retarded bugs… I’m sorry, “features” that is still part of the OS; 10.6 is still far and away the worst version of OS X Apple has ever put out the door, and as I’ve noted many times elsewhere, if you’re a professional that must deal with large amounts of image files on a regular basis, for God’s sake, DO NOT UPGRADE TO SNOW LEOPARD! But I’ve finally come to grips with most of them and finally have a well-oiled machine. I know almost no one reading this will care, except maybe those who have been wondering why I’ve no longer complained about my Mac on Twitter (sup sabler), but considering how bruised my Mac ego was before all this, I’m just mighty proud, that’s all. Though that being said, I’m still struggling to grips with my freshly installed XP partition, which while still far more stable and reliable then Windows 7, does remind me why I’m an Apple person in the first place. I can’t even get Joy2Key to work for Pete’s sake.

- Haven’t seen anything good as of late. The only movie I’m looking forward to is, believe it or not, Ninja Assassin. Hey, I’m a Rain fan! As is Hilary, so I’m waiting till she’s done with her pet sitting duties in Connecticut to check it out with her. Hopefully it’ll still be in theaters by then! Meanwhile, haven’t watched any anime in ages either (well, not since Cencoroll at least). I hear Trapeze is excellent and I’ve already nabbed the first couple of episodes, but they’re just sitting there on my hard drive, not doing much of anything. Guess I need to be in the right mood. I also have the recently released French edition of Mind Game plus Summer Wars, both of which I should really get around to cracking open soon! And yes, I’ve heard that Studio Gonzo has gone belly-up and will therefore not be able to do the second season of Strike Witches (you know, that show with girls who are 15 at most yet fly around in their panties, with WW2 machinery for legs and sporting cats/tails). Needless to say, I am devastated.

- Actually, as what I have been watching, basically this YouTube video, about 20 times a day for the past week or so. Being a fan of the old TMNT cartoon isn’t a requisite, but it certainly does help. Followed by this and this.

- Finally walked across the George Washington Bridge, something I’ve been meaning to do since first moving to Washington Heights. And no, it wasn’t raining at the time, nor am I the least bit interested in bungee jumping, so I wasn’t trying to re-create the opening scene in Metal Gear Solid 2. My plans of using it as a new jogging route is no longer crazy or stupid since the high altitudes and winds insures that any car exhaust doesn’t still around for too long. Plus there’s plenty of other joggers, along with cyclists, certainly don’t mind it either. Though I’m mostly just interested in seeing how doable a walking trip to Mitsuwa is; getting there on foot should be too hard, but carrying back bottles of sake and frozen beef bowls? Might need to take the shuttle bus back of that leg.

… See, how boring was all that?! Again, been busy with assorted other projects that, naturally, I can’t talk about. Otherwise, got into a bunch of arguments with assorted folks at local establishments (fun-fact: Shintaro Kago is selling original artwork online, and some of the prices are criminally cheap, yet I can’t bite because I just know the local post office douchebags will f*ck it up somehow), plus MTA employees naturally, but does anyone even care anymore? Even I don’t. And what about my annoying upstairs neighbors? Super long story short: the reason why it sounds like a herd of elephants, stomping around upstairs is his how, according to the super, they’re 9,000 pounds each. So elephants that also happen to get very animated whenever there’s a UFC event. But again, who cares?

Actually, I guess I could talk about the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival, which is happening this very second, but not going. Sorry! As much as I want to support the indie comics scene (well, to varying degrees mind you), I’m still passing due to the simple fact that dealing with Willamsburg on the weekend, especially one in which the subways are supposed to be particularly screwed up, is not on the agenda. Hate to be a snobby Manhattanite and all. Besides, also need to save my energy for this upcoming weekend, which we be more than super packed. But until that report comes, here’s more of what else has been going on…

My Dream Of A Night Court Video Game, Partially Realized

- Well the PlayStation turned 15 earlier this week…

… I already passed along a history lesson over at Heavy, so no need to repeat myself here. And like I said, the PSone sure is a wonderfully cute little machine, isn’t it? Here’s a commercial that stresses this fact that I saved from Daily Radar back in the day. Question: anyone know how I can get mine modded? Cuz it’s nice to look at and all, but unless it can play Vib Ribbon (and original copy, of course), it’s still kinda useless.

- The other big news of the week, which I also mentioned over at Heavy, but certainly bears repeating, is how at long last we finally have proof that Michael Jackson was responsible for the Sonic 3 soundtrack! And to think, for a while I was actually starting to begin all the doubters!

Again, be sure to check out the full breakdown along with the always awesome “Michael Quest” over at my other game blogging digs. Sorry for the constant plugs, but I’d like to keep that gig going as long as possible, so the more people that click my links, the more the bosses will be happier, and so will ! Though back to the SSV post, here’s something that was deposited in the comment section that’s funny because it’s true!

… I’m amazed that I was able to figure that one out myself.

- Perhaps not as big to some, but certainly to many folks such as myself, is the news that Akira Yamaoka is leaving Konami. Aside from the fact that he dude more or less embodies Silent Hill more than anyone else. Though to be honest, I’m somewhat out of the loop and am therefore unfamiliar with his beef with the Japanese gaming industry, which I guess is the reason why he’s quitting his day job. Naturally I’m dying to know, since it really does seem like things over there keeps getting screwier and screwier. Speaking off…

- It’s becoming somewhat apparent that Cave will not be making ESPGaluda II region free like Mushihime-sama Futari, and it’s frustrating to say the least. Thank goodness I’m not the only one who views this as somewhat of a “f*ck you” to their American audience.

But hey, at least I’ll be able to experience this on my American 360, and something’s better than nothing, right?

- Back to Original Sound Version, their review of the Rockman chiptunes tribute is worth checking out, especially if you’re still on the fence about importing the sucker. Despite the lack of a Magnet Man remix, it’s still pretty outstanding.

- Oh, and now I have to track down this single by no3b to see if the b-side really does sound like the moon stage from Ducktales. Splendid.

_ I’m certain everyone’s gotten his or her Club Nintendo bonuses by now. If you were like me and were too lazy to fill out all those stupid surveys on Nintendo.com, you had the choice of either a desk calendar or a Mario hat-shaped pouch (I chose the former, to replace Ikki Tousen: Eloquent Fist one I’ve been rocking all year). And if you had enough gold coins, you got a download code to beat up your trainer in Punch-Out for the Wii. Which I?m kicking myself over for missing out on, but not that much.

Meanwhile, in Japan

… Yeah, bummer, I know.

- Capcom is re-tooling Final Fight and Magic Sword (God I love that game back in the day) into one handily little package, one that’s HDTV ready. This includes assorted graphics filters, but the best part are these frames…

- And Mirror’s Edge is heading to the iPhone, and gotta say, I’m just as skeptical of a decent gameplay experience as 4 color rebellion, for many of the same points that they outline, plus I also agree that if it’s not a shameless rip-off of Canabalt, then what’s the f’n point?

Though the real question is whether EA will be sued (yet again) by that jerk-off Tim Lanngdell for using the word Edge in the title. It really sucks how he got a minor will when the latest and most well-known recipient of his nonsense, Edge became Edgy.

- Check out what might be the very first mention of Nintendo on American soil, circa 1955.

- One last quick thing from 4 color: a game from the creators of Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman that’s about airship management!

- You know, Cactus has been getting lots of attention as of late. Which of course is a good thing! Brandon recently whipped up a nice little hit list of the guy’s stuff over at Boing Boing.

On, and just two days after GAMMA 4 was announced, the dude already finished his entry. Crazy, but hardly a shock coming from the guy. Also, gotta love his new site design!

- Back to Brandon and Boing Boing, here we have a look at the art of LittleBigPlanet. I still say it’s the most overrated game of this generation (the fact that game academics still jerk off to it gives me migraines just thinking it), but it’s always had killer looks…

- Though these days, the best place to check out Brandon’s game related discoveries is over at his Tumblr. Like this look at some pre-release version of Xi/Devil Dice

- Hey, the soundtrack to D-Pad Hero is finally available for download!

- So it’s not all that game related, save for one tiny little reference, but the guy has a thing for music videos that feature neat animation and so do I!

- The creator of Knytt now has shirts for sale and they’re pretty nifty!

- Again, pretty annoying how Boing Boing won’t let him update Offworld like he used to, otherwise more folks would know by know that GIRL recently reached Jupiter in Noby Noby Boy.

- I believe a long time ago I mentioned something called Tetris Giant, or at least passed along a pic of the arcade machine’s super huge joysticks. Well, here it is in action.

- Recently rediscovered the following while digging through ages old bookmarks in Firefox: pictures from some art installation that featured pinball machines that had an interactive flat-screen display instead of the traditional mechanics

- Meanwhile, most folks have probably already seen Brock Davis‘s Arcade Expressionism by now I realize, but the Donkey Kong one gets all the attention, whereas the Missile Command one is clearly the best…

… Davis is also the artist behind Chris With Teacup? Sweet.

- Oh God, I simply cannot wait for the American release of Sin & Punishment 2. CANNOT wait.

- Via Phil Fish on Twitter, this game, whatever it might end up being, sure is pretty, even at such an early stage.

- Via Bure on Twitter as well, an insanely awesome Persona fan-art from Pixiv!

… Be sure to select your favorite part and make a desktop wallpaper like I just did! Still don’t get why everyone’s holding household appliances.

- Speaking Persona, here’s the cover to some game mag that I snapped while at Mitsuwa last weekend…

… Perhaps it’s just in my mind, but I kind believe the camera in my iPhone 3GS is tad bit worse than the one in my old regular 3G? Anyhow, would have totally picked it up, but there was hardly any Persona 3 Portable info in the actual magazine itself.

- And via some random dude on Tumblr, a throne made entirely of Famicom carts

- Far and away, the coolest iPod/iPhone dock ever

- There’s a new art book covering Street Fighter coming out soon. Not much is known other than what National Console Support has listen on their blog and pre-order page. Too bad my recent experiences with them regarding the Rise statue has basically killed any desire to do business with them every again.

- I’m also sure that everyone has seen this video by now, of some crazy New Super Mario Bros Wii glitch.

- Speaking of Mario, has everyone checked out the supremely awesome Iwata Ask with Miymamoto? Its chock full of incredible bits and pieces that every fan of Mario, Nintendo, and video games as a whole must absolutely check out.

The thing is, it’s also quite big, so perhaps highlights via places like Kotaku might be most people’s best bets. Like how Mario appearing in so many games is actually an homage to Hitchcock! As well as the revelation that Mario 64 had multiplayer at one point and how Miyamoto wanted to patent jumping in a video game!

Though the best one would have to be Desert Hat’s breakdown of Miyamoto’s game design philosophy. Funny thing is, if he was to apply to Nintendo for a job, they wouldn’t hire the guy!

- Actually, let’s stay with Kotaku for a tiny bit. Believe it or not, but Totilo and McWhertor haven’t been the only ones to dig up interesting stuff on that end. Though Mike was the one to remind everyone that Katamari Damacy Online still exists

- Here we have the many faces of Space Invaders

- Poor, poor (and stupid) Nokia.

- Time for a Marc Ecko update: the guy is still a a**shole!

- You know how Americans are always bitching about the dub work in JRPGs, because it doesn’t sound authentic? Well, it works both ways.

- As if it needed to mentioned, but Japanese sex games keep getting creepier and creepier and creepier.

- It’s pretty infuriating to hear of how all these amazing apps that keep getting rejected by Apple, yet something like this manages to make it to the App Store.

- Witness as both Super Mario and Tetris serve drinks.

- Looks like I have a reason to check out Bones!

- Alright, time for the good stuff; you know what time it is…. Tiny Cartridge time! For starters, I’m not so much amused by yet another game including a public bath scene but more by JC’s vaguely cranky old guy complaints about it!

- Though I will agree that chiptunes with vocals is simply the bomb, ESPECIALLY if Hally is involved.

- Gotta say, EA of Japan’s Zelda but with ninjas is looking better each time it pops up!

- I’m usually not up for spoilers as well, but you must check out the ending to Drawn To Life: The Next Chapter. It’s M. Night Shamalamadingdong-rrific all right!

- So, did Nintendo shamelessly rip-off or simply flat-out buy out this Game Boy Zelda clone that actually pre-dated the real deal by three years?

- Speaking of Link’s Awakening, did you know that some nudity had to be censored out for the American release? Never mind that it’s a naked hippo artist’s model.

- At the time, this Terra Cresta promo cart (one of my earliest lessons in life of how an awesome looking box does not guarantee an awesome playing game) was just $5, but it ended up selling at $191.

- It’s Doom crossed with Mega Man

- For whatever reason, I really dig this photo of a pair of guys walking the streets of Stockholm, prototyping their DSi ghost catching game

- Here we have a “pitch” for a new action RPG that takes place in space that’s by the creator of Contact that’s tentatively called Space Agency. Looks might enticing, even with awkward Engrish (which was bad enough for the creator to then pass alonga slightly edited/cleaned-up version).

- Unfortunately I’m a bit too late for the re-broadcasting, so the sole purpose of bringing this up is to pass along the fab Rhythm Heaven fan art…

… Though the price only went up by $5, and at $15, the price is still a steal! The artist is also response for this too cute Hatsune Miku/Ulala mash-up…

- From the same guy that did that ultra fab Space Invaders/Life Magazine mash-up comes something equally exquisite

- Both myself and Zack (you know, of Life Meter fame) were just talking about whether it was finally time to take the GamesSpite Quarterly plunge.

- The reason why I love TC so much is that they ask the tough questions. Like, who the hell is Sexy Dynamite anyway?

- And once again, Eric demonstrates his keen eye for outstanding Starfax fan art

- But ultimately, there’s no better place to hear about games that us Americans will never get the chance to play, like Sora wo Kakeru Shojo Shooting, one of the growing numbers of DSi shmups that’s available in Japan.

Then you have Kaiten Illust Puzzle Guruguru Logic, the latest from Brownie Brown, Kappa Road, and Reflect Missile from the folks behind Digidrive and PSN’s PixeJunk series. Of the three, the third’s lack of animu means that it has the best chance of making it over here.

- Plus we have a nice rundown of Maestro: Jump In Music, which is indeed pretty rad! Yup, I’ve been playing it for the past day or so thanks to… the wonders of the internet, if you catch my drift. But I’m definitely eager to add it to the permanent collection (the only games I collect these days are DS titles, I just love the little cases), so if anyone knows a good Euro shop, please let me know!

- The King of Games has some new stuff for sale, specifically aimed at fans of Spelunker and R-Type

- On a related note, despite being a fairly hardcore shmup guy, I’ve never been the biggest fan of Darius for whatever reason, other than the Zuntata soundtracks of course. Though I’m fairly psyched for the upcoming Darius Burst for the PSP, mostly since Square Enix now runs Taito and every old property that’s been released has pretty much been gold. Space Invaders Extreme anyone?

In addition to the sweet looking cover, take a gander at the DX pack’s extras, which includes a bath towel…

… And this killer looking shirt…

- Absolutely nothing warms my heart more than blogs in which the author clearly knows his sh*t regarding a subject that I know virtually nothing about. Like the author of Welcome To Special Round; if you look around, you’ll see more than a few posts that entirely dedicated to Konami’s Bemani offerings. His latest post is all about Beatmania’s red-headed stepchild Pop’n Music. Even though I don’t entirely get it, I still dig.

- You know, I should really get around to checking out A Life Well Wasted one of these days…

- Hey BlazBlue fans, you might want to hunt down the >Materials Art Boo. I’d pass along selections from this link but most of them are fairly NSFW. You’ve been warned!

- It’s like Earth Defense Force, but set in a fantasy realm! It’s called Zangeki no Reginleiv and it’s apparently by the same folks, Sandlot? I also recall hearing that it’s both Wii Motion Plus and Classic Controller compatible! Talk about covering your bases.

- Do I like footage of old NES games glitching out like crazy? Does the Pope crap in the woods?

- The subject of Kill Screen recently came up in conversation with a friend, which led to the discovery of the magazine’s site/blog. I’ve already said a few things about the project, perhaps too much without actually seeing the final product, but I must say that I’m still less than encouraged by the vibe I’m getting. At least it links to this NeoGAF thread, which is hilarious, as well as fairly insightful.

- Time to see what GameSetWatch has been unearthing! Like this super detailed walkthrough of the first half of Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble, which looks to be Atlus’ best localization effort yet!

- Here’s a neat little entry for the 2010 Independent Games Festival from South Korea, an adventure game that basically looks like a flipbook!

- Get ready for Cooking Mama, the arcade game. Yeah, I can totally see kids in Chinatown Fair lining up for this one, alongside SF4.

- The word record for Galaga was recently shattered, and even though it’s not as dramatic as the tale told in King of Kong, it was still quite the against all odds achievement. In the movies, the guy manages to make the winning touchdown despite losing a leg in a car accident, and in this case, the guy manages to break the highest score despite going blind in one eye.

- Here’s a brilliant concept that I’m shocked hasn’t been thought up before: a bullet hell shmup in which you’re the boss! You basically choose from assorted bullet patterns in hopes of annihilating that pesky little ship that managed to single-handily wipe out the entire armada.

- Game designers find inspiration for their games in the oddest of places. For some, it’s their childhoods spent exploring caves or their garden (Miyamoto), for others it’s their love and appreciation of llamas (Jeff Minter). Well, how about a high school reunion?

- I guess it really says something when news of another new Dreamcast title coming soon and it’s no longer some big deal. Guess not helping is how it looks to be another lame-o Lumines clone. Yawn.

- Fans of Assault Suits Leynos might be interested in a very similar title coming soon called Gunhound. Which I happen to be! Hopefully Ollie will help be figure out how to nab a copy later this month.

- I also can’t wait to get my hands on the Nobuo Uematsu backed album full of piano arrangements of classic Famicom tracks! Fingers are crossed that it’ll end up on iTunes indeed.

- Andy Helms went through the cast of Metal Gear Solid not too long ago, and now he’s back with a bunch of street fighters

… But before that was some faces from Psychonauts…

- Here we have a good deal of info regarding an imaginary SNES game featured in an episode of Full House, as collated and dissected by those crazy kids at Select Button. Who says they’re not able to harness their power for good?

- And now we have Megadeth crossed with Mega Man!

- In addition to being a card-carrying GTA hater, I’m also a card-carrying Kenji Eno lover, hence why it breaks my hear that I wasn’t able to attend this

- Yet another brilliant little game that’s set to rock the GDC and IGF! Man, I really need to figure a way to get my ass their mad this upcoming year.

- Was initially going to pass on re-posting this till I went to the artist’s Flickr page, which included at least one piece that I really dug…

- Semi-related

- A little reminder: Blip Fest 2009 is now less than two weeks away! And guess whose going to be covering it for GSW? You guessed it! Not will I be there to pass along a detailed reports of all the sight and sounds (sorry if this is the old person in me speaking, but I’m relieved that it’s just three nights instead of the usual four), I’m also looking forward to getting my hands on the game!

- At long last, some details behind Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery

- The simple concept of a chiptunes album that covers theme songs from assorted 80s and 90s television shows is basically the greatest thing since sliced bread, if you I don’t say so myself…

… Why, WHY could there not have been a proper Night Court game for the NES? Hudson Hawk got one, and the Three Stooges one was not that bad either!

- The DS can potentially do anything, even help blind people read documents via text-to-speach!

- As some might have heard already, various UK retailers have refused to carry Muramasa for whatever retarded reason. So what a publisher to do? Resort to guerrilla marketing, that’s what! I’m just shocked to see such antics not be completely douchey, which seems to be a big issue in Europe. Anyone remember the bleeding bus stop that Acclaim whipped up a few years back?

- We already have Accordion Hero, the aforementioned D-Pad Hero… guess Ribbon Hero was just a matter of time.

- Once again it would seem that, the process of making games is becoming easier everyday though the real test is whether or not I’ll be able to figure the tools out. And when that day comes… Spready Bear will finally become a reality!

- Re: Blip Fest, the lineup and schedule is finally available online. Lots of new/unfamiliar names, and which is good in my book! I love checking out new stuff. I’m just bummed out by the return to Gowanus; the food options around there are nonexistent, plus the crowd was beyond obnoxious, but that’s Brooklyn as a whole, what can you do?

- Let’s compare and contrast some Touhou statues once again, shall we? First up is Reimu #1

… and Reimu #2

- Since we’re now on the subject of toys and figures, check out this wacky Xbox 360 Munny mod

- Then there’s this Professor Layton bobblehead

- I”m also seriously tempted by this Border Break kit

- Though not as cool as this Armored Core mecha

- I’m a big fan of Vanessa from King of Fighters, but this statue of her is lacking something, though I can’t quite put my finger on it

- Danny Choo recently posted a very detailed look at the new Dimension Diver Aegis FES figure

… I still prefer the Figma design, but still nice nonetheless.

- This R-Type model looks totally amazing…

… but sorry, I’ve already spent the rest of my spending money on that Thunder Force 5 kit I showed last time!

- Yet another old bookmarked page that I recently unearthed. Anybody know if this Vic Viper is made from scratch of an official kit?

Same with this Silver Hawk…

- Jin-Saotome is at it again! Of his latest creations, Psycho Mantis is the clear-cut winner…

- May as well swing by Siliconera once again; a few new notables items have popped up since last time, which was only a few days ago I know. I remember a time when it used to be updated three times a day, tops, and now it’s like 9,000! Anyway, did you know that the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will be utilizing Vocaloid tech?!

- Guess which games Japanese retailers thought bombed the most? Blood of Bahamut, that vaguely Shadow of the Colossus title for the DS. Has it been announced for the US yet? Will it ever come out here? Was it even any good?

- Meanwhile, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is officially coming out here, and it’s going to be one of the new M rated games for the DS, at least over here (in Japan, there’s tons of mature and adult oriented titles for Nintendo’s handheld, for perhaps obvious reasons). Siliconera’s Spencer’s apprehension regarding its success is perhaps a bit unwarranted however, especially comparing it to GTA: Chinatown Wars. As noted earlier, problem is, no one cares about Grant Theft Auto anymore. Plus, MegaTen fans will snatch it up and make it a success, that’s practically a guarantee.

- And to wrap things up, I present the top 50 protest signs of 2009. Simply because of…

… Then there’s….

… Which I don’t get, since EA has been one of the good guys for the past few years now. Hmmm.

In this post:
1. Highlights from the past week, including Boom Boom Satellites, Thanksgiving, RoboCop, and the iPhone 3GS.
2. And the usual rundown of game related goodness!

God Bless Jon Lovitz

Well, I’m still here. Remember that “thing” I casually mentioned last time, which was supposed to go down after Thanksgiving? Well, only a select few know the details, and I’m happy to report to those folks that I haven’t been kidnapped or murdered or anything of the like. At least not yet; it’s still gonna happen, things have just been pushed back a couple of days, that’s all.

Needless to say, I simply cannot wait till I can finally give up the goods, especially given my penchant to blab about stuff. Unfortunately that might be a while, but hopefully it’ll be a tale worth telling, though even at this early stage, it’s already retardedly awesome. On the car ride back from his family’s place for Thanksgiving, I explained the story thus far to Dave Roman, who also questioned the wisdom of my actions and feared that it might lead to big trouble. Though after showing him the impetus for it all, he reluctantly understood why I have set myself upon such a potentially epic and life changing journey.

Yet despite the fact that the real wackiness has yet to ensue, the past couple of days have been strange enough as is. For reasons that I once again can’t get into, but I suppose it doesn’t hurt to mention how it’s family related, and even the most casual acquaintances of mine are well aware of how insane my folks are. Still, things have gone up a notch or two as of late, which again I’m dying to explain once the time is right. As previously stated several times before, it’s been strongly suggested by a few (Raina Lee once again sticks out as the head of that pack) that in addition to my on-going auto-bio comics “project”, which mostly focuses on the insanity and absurdity that encompasses my day to day ordeals, it might not be such a bad idea to focus on my storied family. I know everyone thinks that they’re crazy parents are interesting enough to validate the existence of a book, but I also know that many believe that their parents are crazy, and let’s just say that I sorta have the leg up on everyone else regarding that last part! Again, all that’s for another time and/or place, so moving on…

How was everyone’s Thanksgiving festivities/post-Thanksgiving holiday? Mine was super swell! But that’s always the case, mostly because I get to spend it with someone else’s family, which makes things about 200% less stressful/aggravating than if I had to deal with my own. Granted, I’ve been at the Romans long enough to be considered family, but at the end of the day, I’m still a guest and am treated as such. Meaning, if I say some crass or offensive “joke”, Dave’s mom will think I’m being charming, whereas if the same sentiment was uttered by her own son, she’s think he was being a smart-ass! Anyway, highlights from the past week or so…

- Before going into Turkey Day, I should perhaps mention last Tuesday’s Boom Boom Satellites show! Because Hilary couldn’t go due a last minute change in holiday plans, Joe Salina came long instead. Since he felt a tad bit of trepidation going in… along with not being at all familiar with the band’s music, Joe was wary of the shoulders he’s be brushing with at the show, that being those belonging to animu dorks, and they were certainly there in full force… I felt the need to get the guy drunk before show time, which resulted in a rather hilarious exchange between myself and the jerk-off bartender at the Irish pub in Chinatown, the one where all the cops go to get sh*t-faced after their shifts, or perhaps even during. I won’t bother with the details, other than Joe could not believe such an exchange could have possibly ensued with anyone else.

Anyway, the show itself was a real mixed bag; the first act was just another generic hipster band from Brooklyn called Me You Us Them. The lead guitarist had clearly just learned how to play his instrument and kept playing the same four chords over and over and over again as he wailed, which was flat out awful btw. The crowd reaction was completely unwarranted, yet hardly surprising; I guess if all you ever did was watch anime, play games, and listen to J-rock, all downloaded from the internet, you’d probably think the first person you ever saw play a real instrument live was a rock god. At least they weren’t anywhere close to being as offensive as the following opening act, this insanely crappy and extremely obnoxious Staten Island guido who goes by the name Kotchy. The dude was just yet another pathetic reminder of the sad state of DJs today; nothing says showmanship and talent than some jerk-off whose face is buried in his iBook while iTunes does all the work. Oh, don’t forget the abysmal attempt at rapping over sh*tty Garageband loops. Just thinking of him makes all over again. It was actually wretched enough to force Joe to bail before the main act, and to be honest, I can’t blame the guy; if I had no idea what I was waiting for, I would have boogied back home as well. Plus, dude has a real job and had to get up early the next morning.

Thankfully the wait for the Satellites was well worth it in the end, they were absolutely amazing. The duo played a nice mix of old and new tunes, kicking off with their new single with Tahj Mowry on-hand (sadly, Flo-Rida, whose also featured, was not on-hand), and then immediately went into stuff from Out Loud. It was right then and there that it finally dawned on me how awesome seemingly demure Japanese girls who can drum like motherf*ckers truly are. The set wasn’t as long as I had hoped, mostly due to the nonsense that one had to endure leading up to it, but for a free show, beggars can’t be choosers. Plus, I did get a Boom Boom Satellites free t-shirt! Too bad they were literally lobbed at unsuspecting audience members during the performance, like myself; each was rolled up tight like a ball and thrown as such, with mine hitting me right in the face, enough to cause my glasses to fly off. Thankfully I caught them and they were completely unharmed (I’ve had my pair for over 8 years nows and despite steady abuse, it’s still in fine shape and well worth the $500 I paid for them… you just can’t go wrong with anything that’s made in Japan). As for the shirt itself, it’s way too small for me, since you know how small Japanese shirt sizes can be.

- Like I said, Thanksgiving was pretty rad. Just kicked back and listened to Dave and his sister Michele go on and on about pop culture, mostly centering on movies and television shows that I don’t watch, let alone have heard of, since I don’t have cable and watch TV in general. The best line spoken at the dinner table was actually from Dave’s cousin Dan, when he asked everyone: “Hey, did anyone see Oprah interview that women who had her face and hands ripped off by the chimp?” Oh, and I also ate like a pig, of course.

- Hardly engaged in any Black Friday shopping, even online. I remember last year getting like 50 games via Amazon, but this year’s pickings were not that interesting, with the sole exception of Dead Space: Extraction for just $25. Though I did get an ass-load of DVDs; every season of Curb Your Enthusiasm was only $15, so I got what I was missing, along with The Best of Larry Sanders Show (at this point, I’ve given up hope of the entire series being ever being released) and The Critic (God bless Jon Lovitz). Plus Akira on Blu-ray, despite not having a HD set. But I know plenty of folks who do!

- Speaking of hi-def, Katie and I went out to Mitsuwa on Saturday for our regular monthly fill of Japanese cafeteria food and groceries. Swung by the Target that?s right next-door where I got 2008′s movie of the year, aka Speed Racer, on Blu-ray for just $8! Then later that evening we went out to Joe’s; previously he taken me out to Arby’s, and this time it was some local Korean restaurant. All I can say is f*ck K-town; sure the food is good, but it’s obnoxiously overpriced due to the fact that it’s primarily clientele are big money spending Korean businessmen and their obnoxious spawn who all go to NYU. But yeah, the bibimbap was damn good.

Afterwards we watched RoboCop in glorious HD and it was simply incredible. The movie has aged like fine wine; I just love how the fake, dystopian future news of 1987 now eerily resembles what we have today, at least over on channel 11 in NYC. And a robot that can’t walk down a flight of stairs? Still genius. It was actually Katie’s first time seeing the movie; the trip out to Queens was sold purely on the promise of being able to play with Joe’s new cat Soma, but in the end, she dug the movie as well. Though she still believes Verhoeven’s best work is Showgirls, which is a fair assessment. We then watched a few episodes of Trailer Park Boys, for Joe to check out. I’m still shocked that Comedy Central hasn’t picked that one up yet.

- Dear Microsoft: thanks for Windows 7, but no thanks. In the end, it just wasn’t meant to be. After a painfully lengthy and complicated installation process, I discovered the hard way that the 64-bit version is not very Mac compatible. And even the 32-bit version didn’t solve all the video, sound, and Bluetooth issues. In the end, went with XP which has given me zero issues thus far (I will admit that there were issues during my first attempts running it a whiles back, but I’m fairly certain that it was cuz I had a cracked copy, whereas this one is totally legit), and looking back, I have to wonder why I bothered with MS’s new OS in the first place. Other than the fancy new desktop wallpapers, how it was free of course. Though I haven’t played Left 4 Dead 2 just yet; I still need a headset that has a microphone.

- One other thing that I did pick up, and not because of the holiday shopping season, but just because was the iPhone 3GS. It all stemmed from my latest call to AT&T, to once again complain about the abysmal service and state that I’m not paying $30 for data that I can’t use. Long story short, enough was enough and it was time to put my money where my mouth was and cancel my contract. Granted, I’m still developing for the iPhone, but an iPod Touch can kinda/sorta cover that same base, plus I’m also getting into Android development, plus the new Droid handset on Verizon looks pretty damn hot, plus the big V has the best coverage, hands now. Cue AT&T’s grief counselor, whose job it is to talk them out of leaving. They always asked in quiet, hushed tones if they can do anything to make you happy, and unfortunately, my request when it came to skipping the data portion of my bill was not gonna work this time, mostly because it was pointed out that I had been given too many discounts thus far. Which apparently added up to over $700! But even though I can’t, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a shot; it’s a real pain in the ass to call and deal with such idiots, but it’ll save you money in the long-run… clearly!

Anyhow, to calm me down, I was informed that I was illegible for an upgrade, which I thought was sometime next year, and at the point I was either going to wait for iPhone 4 or for it to pop up on Verizon’s network. Though the possibility regarding the latter is looking less than likely due to Apple’s recent ads in which they play up their allegiance to Big Blue, and certainly not helping is Big Red’s recent ads that make fun of the iPhone. Plus, the problems I was experiencing with my then current iPhone was driving me up the phone, which I knew would be alleviated with a faster processor. Hence the early Christmas gift for myself, and must admit, it is pretty nifty. The digital compass rocks, making navigation via Google Maps a million times better (provided I can get signal… my original problem still remains however: AT&T’s sh*t-tastic service) and the ability to shoot video at last is great, though that doesn’t mean my cable access show is getting off the ground anytime soon.

I’m still trying to convince Katie to get a Palm Pre, since I do believe that handset is damn sexy (I just wish I was involved in any sort of project that justified me playing around with one). Oh, and despite the fact that I just got a new phone, and how the 3GS fits quite nicely in my Apple-oriented work/play environment, I still want to get my hands on the Nokia N900 since Maemo looks neat as well. Is anyone still reading btw? Sorry, I realize that most folks couldn’t give a damn about cell phones like I do.

Mega Man The Game

Alright, time to get to business; lots been going on in the world of video games, almost too much, and I?m here once again to point out the best of the best! Because as we approach the end of 2009 (a year I’m certain most folks are eager to get the hell behind them), things are getting particularly crazy…

- For starters, the DSi LL recently came out, and I thought it would sorta just sit there, but one should never doubt the power of Nintendo. The thing flew off store shelves upon its debut, and most importantly, it clearly resonated with its intended demographic, that being old people.

We all know how large it is, but it wasn’t until I saw this pic that the message finally drove home…

- And the wedding between that guy and his girlfriend in a DS game actually went happened. Tiny Cartridge was the first to provide the initial videos and impressions of the blessed event . While watching the groom prance around like a total idiot, I was crossing my fingers that he would drop his lovely bride to add a grim yet equally hilarious finale to the festivities, as well as an excuse to replace his somewhat butt-ugly red DS phat (I basically got the DSi to replace the ugly thing, Katie’s to be precise, since I just couldn’t stand the sight of the thing), but alas there was no such hijinks.

Boing Boing had their usual Boing Boing spin on the proceedings, which basically broke everything down for those who aren’t exposed to such things enough to figure out how grossly hilarious and somewhat pathetic it all is. They also managed to get a few worlds from the brand new husband:

“Now that the ceremony is over, I feel like I’ve been able to achieve a major milestone in my life. Some people have expressed doubts about my actions, but at the end of the day, this is really just about us as husband and wife. As long as the two of us can go on to create a happy household, I’m sure any misgivings about us will be resolved… As for what’s next, we still haven’t gone to see my parents, so we will be going home together on New Years to officially announce our marriage.”

… Something tells me that they will be hardly shocked by such behavior from their son!

… Meanwhile, as one man gains a woman, albeit a virtual one, another guy has just lost his very real wife. I guess the real funny part is how it’s all because of the same girl, Nene. She most have something crazy potent between her polygonal legs!

- It’s funny how all this makes otaku that still obsess over the ladies of Idolmaster look practically well adjusted in comparison. Ok, not really.

- Still, I’d take the ladies of Love Plus, Idolmaster (with the exception of the trap of course, though i believe he’s only in the DS version), and Dream Club (naturally) over the way too creepy, even for me, girl in Real Kanojo. Which I’ve already covered over at Heavy (you folks have been keeping abreast of my daily posts over there, right?), but here comes a benchmark video plus a link to a demo! If only I was running the 64-bit version of Windows 7, I’d totally be all over this thing!

Though it could be worthwhile to run the game on less than optimal hardware, just to see what other wacky things might possibly happen in addition to stuff like this

- Well, may as well stick around Sankaku Complex for a tad bit more, since we’re already here! Did you know the PSN hit Fat Princess has been banned in Japan? And the reason? For objectifying women? Ha! This is Japan silly. Nope, because… get this… the characters have only four fingers. The full explanation, which is too much to pass along here, can be found by clicking the link, and a pleasant reminder of how, no matter how liberal Japanese society might seem at times, it’s just equally and stupidly conservative at times as well.

- So who are the brave men that form the Xbox 360 and PS3 defense forces in Japan? And can you see the pattern?

- The Strike Witches DS game finally came out in Japan. Guess what the pre-order bonus was? A DS pouch that looks like girls’ underpants, naturally.

- We all know that Nintendo has been working like crazy to get those who distribute DS flash cards in jail, mostly in Japan. Well it would seem that the law is not on their side in Spain.

- Remember that moe molestation game for the iPhone that I’m particularly fond of? But it’s not just me! Hilary and Dave Mauro like it too! Not to share the blame and all, but… well, here’s something similar, featuring train groping and one of the girls from K-ON!

- And here’s something that’s been making headlines across the web, but I like the SC’s take on it due to their flagrant anti-Chinese bias, which as an Asian, I just find hilarious. Sorry! It’s their take on Super Mario Galaxy, the surprisingly competent looking Dinosaur Planet

- Speaking of China, I recently stumbled across the following, while trying to figure out an alternative outlet for the Rise figure that I had pre-order many months ago via National Console Support, but hadn’t heard a peep about, despite the fact that everyone else had begun selling theirs, and were even already sold out…

… The asking price is $300, and given its relative scarcity, that amount isn’t too nuts all things considered. I’m assuming it was picked up at Wonder Festival and only a small handful are in existence. I’m also fond of this Morrigan one…

… Sorry, but I seemed to have misplaced the auction, but I’m certain you’ll find it somewhere buried within the seller’s eBay store, where there’s countless other figures and statues, an insanely vast assortment, all around the same price. Some go up as high as $500! But anyone that’s remotely familiar with what’s out there today will be a bit surprised and confused with some of the offerings; quite a few are not ultra rare garage kits but somewhat more common mass-produced items that can be found elsewhere for hundreds of dollars less. All of which are pre-painted, hence why when their auction page mentions of a painting schedule and the such, it’s more than a little odd. That and the statement, “will make a new one after your order”; are they created from scratch as well? This is China we’re talking about.

This practically nude Lei Fan from Dead Or Alive with the exception of some sea shells is fairly nifty (and totally NSFW btw), but $300 nifty? Ummm…. And anyone who can help me identify where this girl is from (no worries, it’s totally SFW) would be totally appreciated; I remember her from somewhere, but can’t put my finger on it…

- BTW, regarding that Rise figure I pre-ordered with National Console Support: I don’t think I’ll be doing business with them anytime soon. Placed my ordered many months ago, and was charged for it back then as well, which I found rather odd since most folks only ask for payment once the item has finally arrived. Anyhow, it finally began popping up at other places recently, with most selling out almost instantly, but not a word from NCSX, not even a blog post stating that they were due any day now. Sent them an email, but that got no response, so I called yesterday and the woman who picked up the phone seemed super annoyed right up front. Which was certainly appreciated. It almost appeared that they forgot that they were supposed to carry it and was told that maybe the shipment is late and that I’d get an email next week. Yeah, right. I’d ask for my money back if not for the fact that, like I said, no one else has it anymore. Once more, I’m super glad I pre-ordered Mushihime-sama Futari through Play-Asia.

Oh, and it would seem that I’m not the only one whose had issues with NCSX recently. Just scroll to the bottom. Though dmauro on the next page mentions of some potential b.s. regarding Play Asia and Futari I’m afraid. You’d think a Japanese game that’s been made region free would be so straightforward and easy to deal with, but nope!

- Might try and see what doing business with Hobby Search is like very soon; they just started accepting pre-orders for the Shooting Game Historica EX Thunder Force V model. And I know I say this a lot these days, but God damn is that one sexy shump ship…

… Includes both the Gauntlet and Vambrace, with Brigandine accessories! If only I was so damn poor these days!

- Going back to Persona and Darkstalkers real quick, recently stumbled across this which features assorted animu, along with game related character swaps. Like this…

… Also love Princess Peach as Yoko Littner from Gurren Lagann…

… I also dig the simplicity of having Sakura and Karin switching threads…

- And this one is actually from my own forum, via the awesome random pics thread. It’s funny cuz it’s true!

- Back to Sankaku Complex, they recently revealed that, yes, the new girl protagonist in Persona 3 Portable will indeed be banging dudes as some had hoped or expected. Though no word of any yuri action, but this is a JRPG after-all. Though in case there isn’t, which guy would I go after then? As noted already in the forums, it’s a tough call since pickings are slim.

- Sticking with Persona still, word has it that Atlus has begun working on another high school RPG, but it’s NOT related to Shin Megami Tensei! Come on, just announce Persona 5 already, Jesus.

- May as well check out some of the other notable headlines that Siliconera has delivered as of late. First off, can’t do a news rundown without mentioning Bayonetta at least twice, right? Here we have all the little dance bits she does, but connected and next there’s a Bayonetta theme for the 360 that calls upon Virtua Fighter 1, which I’m going to be super pissed if it doesn’t make it out here in America!

- Siliconera was the very first place to break news of 360 and PS3 ports for No More Heroes, and has been the place for all related info ever since. Like I said over at Heavy at the time, this is great news for those who haven’t had the chance to experience one of the best games of this generation (featuring one of the best game soundtracks of all time), though it’s hard to say how well it’ll hold up to the original, since all the motion controls are being axed, and unlike New Super Mario Bros Wii, not once does all the Wiimote shaking get old a single bit.

Then again, as Patrick Klepek was keen to point out, it was supposed to be a 360 game all along. Plus at least the new edition is gonna show a lot more skin from the ladies!

- It’s also worth noting that the original Wii release in Japan was somewhat censored; all the blood that gushed from all the bad people’s heads when you cut them off was replaced by black pixels, which I hear from some was actually a lot cooler. Anyhow, the 360 version will bring back the red, whereas the PS3 version will neutered as expected, since Sony has had a weird stance on sex and violence all this generation for whatever reason. Though guess which one America is gonna get? Apparently…. none!

- We also have some details on the upcoming sequel Again, the original on the Wii must have done okay enough to warrant a follow-up. The best news is how the anime that Travis Touchdown loves so much in the first game will be featured far more prominently this time! I had no idea it was called Bizarre Jelly.

- Instead of asking your to add some piece of plastic to make your Wiimote look like a golf club or anything like that, Wiiwaa asks you to put the controller in the mouth of the puppet that’s included as a means to play. Interesting…

- Time for the bi-weekly mention of yet another industry figure bemoaning the sad state of video games in Japan, this time from the CEO of Square-Enix. Though when most think of possible reasons why things have become so stagnant, one can’t help but almost immediately think of Square Enix I’m afraid.

- There could be another Metroid Prime, but for the DS? Neat!

- The WiiWare version of Phoenix Wright will have you pointing like Phoenix does? Also very cool!

- Attention Earthbound/Mother fanatics: a Earthbound Zero (Mother 1) prototype cart is now available on eBay for the bargain basement price of $3,700.00! And counting.

- The Senko no Ronde sequel has been officially announced for the 360 for this upcoming spring. Fingers crossed that G. Rev will follow Cave’s steps and make it region free! It sucks that we’ve already lost out on Mamoru-kun; getting the chance to play it was one definite highlight of this past year’s Otakon.

- And speaking of Cave, Espgaluda II has just been formally announced for the 360. If this one isn’t region free as well, especially in light of the recent DLC debacle (which I’m still trying to figure out) and despite the fact that plenty of folks I personally know have purchased Futari (far more so than Death Smiles), it will pretty much confirm that they just love f*cking with their American audience, which is pretty mean to say the least.

- Even though I could give a rat’s ass about Sonic the Hedgehog these days, let alone LittleBigPlanet ever, these Sonic themed Sackboy skins are pretty darn cute.

- As for Sega, is After Burner Climax really headed towards consoles? As cheesy as it sounds, being able to take the cockpit for a spin was a definite highlight of my Japan trip. Plus, will Yakuza 3 actually end up on American shores in the end?

- Though these days I have virtually zero faith in the house that Sonic built. Remember me bitching about the less than stellar first showing of Daytona HD? Get this: it’s apparently the old game being emulated on PC hardware with a few extra graphic filters in place. Hence all the stupid slow down and the still existing pop-up. Seriously.

- Tekken 6′s soundtrack was recently released on iTunes. Naturally the best song from the entire game, the one with all the yodeling, is not included for some retarded reason. Great. At least the vastly superior, and still quite excellent to this very day, soundtrack to Tekken 2 is also available for purchase, though the real money is the Strike Fighting and Strike Arranges albums.

- Regarding Tekken still, check out this manga based on part 6 that’s available this very second online, and in English no less!

… Haven’t had a chance to fully dig in, but it appears to mostly center around Asuka Kazama. Even early on, it’s chock full of characters, though I’m not a fan with how some are utilized. Ling Xiaoyu as some ditzy news reporter is okay. But King and Armor King as Craig Marduk’s lackeys? No dice.

- Time to ask about another extremely obscure Sega Saturn shump: anyone out there familiar with Game Tengoku?

… I’ll let Segagaga Domain do all the talking here:

“Game Tengoku is Jaleco?s answer to Konami?s Parodius series. The game features many characters from various Jaleco games but that?s probably where the similarities end. You see, Game Tengoku is actually a shooter based on the life of an arcade or game center as they?re called in Japan. The first stage starts you off flying over a load of Japanese arcade cabinets which actually have games running on them such as Super EDF and Dead Dance (from the Super Famicom) as well as others. All enemies are also related to games. One of my favorite stages is t he 8 bit stage. On this stage it comes up saying that the 32bit CPU (being the Saturn) has been captured by an 8bit CPU changing all the graphics in to black & white space invader efforts.”

… Can’t seem to recall every coming in contact with the game in Chinatown during my Saturn importing days, so I don’t feel too wretched for missing out on this particular one.

- Here’s something to do next time you rent a game from Blockbuster or trade something into Gamestop…

- It’s just been revealed that Dan Hsu will be coming back to the newly reborn EGM, whenever that’ll be. So now might be the time to mention the the Assassin’s Creed/1UP controversy that played a significant part in his decision to leave Ziff Davis at the time. Too bad the original blog post is long gone, but at least The Escapist’s mention is still around.

Anyhow, it’s also a small example of the wonderful things Ubi Soft does to make game journalists’ jobs so wonderful! Full disclosure: I don’t have any ill feeling towards them, never did, but their idiotic behavior still hits pretty close to home nonetheless. Also, all things considered, the job of a video game reporter is still a cakewalk compared to most professions.

- Via Shoe’s current digs, live action Street Fighter Alpha 2?

- While on the subject of real life video game characters, and I know this is fairly old news, but did you hear about the Mario Bros beating up a cabbie in Staten Island?

- And I sincerely appreciate this attempt at a Halloween costume…

- I just discovered the existence of a band called Final Fantasy via this music video. Despite the lack of Sephiroth or Yuna, the song is fairly decent. At the very least they’re not nearly as wretched as the band that dares to call themselves Radiant Silvergun. Just do a Google search for their MySpace page to find out for yourself. Or not and just trust me on this one.

- And here’s Big Bear proving that every rap video needs to be made in Second Life.

- Time once again to see what wacky game related fan art I’ve stumbled across over at Pixiv. Here we have the lone offering from someone whose name, according to Google translate, is “Katsu Yuki Maggot Rope”. Alrighty. Anyway Curly Brace!

- Via GameOvr

- And via the internut lol…

- The fine folks at Polytron earlier this evening released some demo tracks made for Fez for the world to enjoy, though I decided to spend the $10 for the limited edition CDR, since it also afforded me the chance to finally pick up that shirt I’ve had my eye on since forever. Yet come to think of it, I should have totally demanded both items as payment for allowing Phil to crash on my couch for Blip Fest!

- While on the subject of buying stuff, does everyone know that Attract Mode has been updated? Everyone’s been raving about Calvin and Hellen’s Bogus Journey, though that Miniboss t-shirt looks equally rad!

- Travis passed this one along: various “old” technology, including old Nintendo console controllers and a Game Boy as modern fossils

… $65 for an N64 controller made out of pure concrete seems like a bargain to me!

- I’m guessing this is the American counterpart to that Idolmaster scene?

- Meanwhile, in Korea…

- For those who might possibly find this interesting: a ten minute video of some Japanese trying to set up his Wii on a webcam.

- The only reason why I want to play Ouchi de Mugen Puchi Puchi, which is simply a bubble wrap popping simulator for WiiWare, is for the Xevious themed level, and that’s pretty much it. BTW, there’s an iPhone version and it’s exciting for approximately 3 seconds! Thank God it was a free.

- Yes, I too was very much impressed by this BioShock cosplay

- And I too was both impressed and creeped out by this girls’s Pikachu ski mask

- Was going to post an image of Pikachu from the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade, but figured this was a bit more instead…

- Once more, cold care less about Earthbound, but I know many out there love the game, hence why this should appeal to such folks…

… It’s pretty at least!

- And this reminds me, it’s finally time to pull out my little Christmas tree!

- Another oldie, at this point, but goodie: actually wanted to posted it over at Heavy at the time, which at least affords me the chance to somewhat timely, but it’s still a bit too saucy for that end, with all the nudity and strong sexual themes, even if it’s all pixelated. Anyhow, for the five of you who hasn’t seen it yet, Truckers Delight!

- As for that other place where I blog about games, may as well pass along a few other highlights before I wrap things up (there’s still plenty of other things to talk about, but I have to get up early in the morning, so I’ll continue tomorrow). Including…

Mass: the video game.

The definitive Modern Warfare 2 review.

The Mortal Kombat game that could have been.

The King of Pop lives on, in 8-bits.

Yay, three more character I kinda don’t give a rat’s ass about return in Super Street Fighter 4.

Super Mario does Queen.

Easily the most hardcore system mod ever.

So Winona Ryder, Depeche Mode, and World Of Warcraft, all part of the most frivolous video game lawsuit ever.

The Legend of Halo.

Another fine example of how progressive video games have become. Honestly!

And the key to peace in the Middle East might be held within a Guitar Hero clone?
