In this post:
1. Highlights from The 107th Annual American International Toy Fair, part one.

So Toy Fair finally wrapped up, where I came, saw, and took many pictures. Unfortunately, I still don’t have my new camera, so please excuse the crap quality in advance, yet again.

Also, because I showed up fairly late to the affair, on Tuesday (day one was actually this past Saturday, for some odd reason), most of the following might be yesterday’s news, at least to those that visit Kotaky and Tomopop religiously. Yet going near the end had some distinct advantages, mostly no crowds to contend with, plus loose lips from bored booth attendees, as you’ll all see!

First stop, First 4 Figures and their assortment of Nintendo related statues…

… In addition to Zelda, Metroid were nicely represented…

… I’m still hoping to get my hands on that Zero Suit Samus statue, one day! Then there was this one of Ninja Gaiden that I had never seen before…

This Master Chief bust is simply “okay” in my book, but I’m sure Halo fans are drooling right now…

These Mega Man action figures were surprisingly decent!

… Apparently they’ve been readily available at toys stores for some time now? The same folks at Zoofy also produce a line of Sonic related toys, with the highlight being a Sonic The Werehog figure. Ugh, I know. But Metal Sonic here on the other hand is very much respectable…

Check out this totally bad ass Heihachi Mishima statue, from Tekken of course, by Triad Toys, a relatively new name in the biz (or simply one that I’ve never heard of)…

… There was also a Taki, from Soul Calibur, statue that was not nearly as good, so less said the better. Moving on, Square Enix had a ton of stuff, with a good deal of it based upon other peoples games, like Capcon and Sega, Unfortunately, my Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and Bayonetta pics didn’t come out too well (no big loss for that last one; sorry, but I find her character design to be overrated at best), and everything in general was hard to photograph due to how things were displayed, but Lighting with her horsey Summon can somewhat be made out…

In addition to figures, you also had FFXIII related jewelry…

And these rather hawt looking shirts…

… I asked the rep if these would ever be released in America, and he did state that everything on display, can be found via their online shop, with the exception of the shirts, where they’re looking for an American distributor.

I know it’s hard to make out, but here’s Terra Branford fro, Final Fantasy 6 as a collectable miniature…

… She’s part of a five (or was it six?) figure set that’s coming out in America later this year. Each was originally released in Japan individually in blind boxes, and when I asked if there’s any difference (despite looking the same, the Steel Battalion figures that came out in America are not nearly as well made as the Japanese versions, due to different grade of plastic used), was told that they?re the same exact ones.

So much so, that SE initially believed that it would be in their best interest to not include the Terra figure because that was the “bonus” or especially hard to get a hold of one from the original set. But the suggestion to leave her out, in order to avoid a sh*tstorm from Japanese collectors that had spent tons of money to get the entire assortment, was not an option, since EVERYONE loves Tera. Instead, some relatively obscure Summon from part 1 was left behind instead!

And here are some very nice Chrono Trigger mini statues…

Plus here we have Zenith from the upcoming Front Mission Evolved…

Finally, some Final Fantasy plushies…

Next up, Domo! Truth be told, I’ve never really cared much for the character, despite my strong affinity for practically anything from Japan. It’s not like I hate the character, I’ve just never seen what the fuss was about. But for whatever reason, I found these designer takes on him, by Dark Horse if I’m not mistaken, to be absolutely irresistible…

Time to check out the Kotobukiya booth! They’ve quickly become of one of my favorite producers of fine collectables, and their corner of the showroom floor had plenty of neat things to gawk at. Like their Lost Planet 2 line…

… I had initially thought they were statues, but they’re actually toys! Everything moves and the such. Though what Kotobukiya is mostly famous for was in full effect at Toy Fair…

As previously noted over at Tiny Cartridge, it’s the girl from that manga about the video game dork and his hot-headed girlfriend!

And as also previously seen around here, though in unpainted form, which was somewhat of a downer…

Kasmui from Dead Or Alive Paradise! I believe these will be what folks who shell out the big bucks for the super deluxe version in Japan will be receiving. But which version?

Kotobukiya’s line of Marvel ladies, via the supremely talented Koei Matsumoto, continues to impress. Both regular Phoenix and Dark Phoneix got the biggest push…

I’ve already passed along his Rouge statue a million times already, so how about Psylocke instead?

The men of the Marvel Universe were also represented, but all I care about is Iron Man honestly…

When I first heard that Venture Bros figures were coming out, I got super excited! But when I finally laid eyes on them… I dunno…

… According to Big Bang Pow, their makers, they’re supposed to be “70s-style” figures. And even though I generally like retro, it just doesn’t work for me in this instance. Oh well.

At the same booth as Shocker Toys’ line of indie comic characters, and hey, it’s Scud The Disposable Assassin! Was just talking about the Sega Saturn version with Phil the other day…

Screaming Does Not Necessarily Help

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

In this post:
1. Highlights from last week’s indie arcade opening.
2. And a rundown of all my Tiny Cartridge offerings, plus more!

As stated previously, I’m taking a little break from around here in order to concentrate on my temporary Tiny Cartridge gig, as well as all the other places I write for (plus some other “things”). Still, I had planned on passing along a No More Heroes 2 review, along with my impressions of Bayonetta thus far, which is somewhat related. But alas, it won’t be ready for at least a few more days, and because I don’t like to hold onto pictures I’ve taken myself for too long: highlights from this past Tuesday’s Global Game Jam Arcade opening at Babycastles.

DINOSAUR PARTY

For starters, Silent Barn/Babycastles itself is simply awesome. It’s like some fancy Hollywood set decorator’s idea of what a performance/art space in the ultra hip and trendy part of Brooklyn would look like, but for real…

… Pictures (mine at least) honestly do zero justice, and good news: I’m finally getting a new camera! But back to Tuesday night: first game up was GNILLEY, that game in which you scream at. Here we have Joe Salina’s ass hanging out of the game’s set-up…

… The game itself is mostly a NES Zelda 1 rom hack, but instead of pressing a button to swing a sword, you have to talk (mostly yell) at the game. Given how loud I normally am, I did fairly well; screaming allows you to get rid of enemies, as well as remove obstacles. But I eventually found myself stuck, because I didn’t realize that some parts require you to speak softly. Anyhow, not sure if it was either Joe or Dave Mauro that actually beat the game. Sorry for the spoilers everyone…

Whereas GNILLEY is originally from Australia, all the other Global Game Jam offerings were via local game designers (Jottobots made a return appearance as well, which is from LA if I’m not mistaken, but because of technical difficulties, not sure if was actually playable or not). Here we have I’m On Your Team…

… It’s a four-player game that has two team of two. A basic deathmatch game (2D not 3D/first-person), except you can’t tell who your teammate is visually. Instead you have to pay attention to feint audio cues, which was almost impossible to make out at the place. I somehow got lucky and managed to shoot who I need to, so yay! Afterward was Deceptive Platformer…

… Of all the games, this one was the most visually stimulating (with the exception of Me0wtr0n, of course). It’s a platformer in which you have to navigate across, surprise, platforms! But each has its own unique properties; some will reverse the controls, other throw gravity out of whack. Aside from being the most graphically polished, it was also the most fun to play. Next we have Joe playing Killjet by Tristan Perich…

… I’m just gonna cut and paste the game’s description via the Babycastle’s Facebook page if no one minds: “The entire 1-bit video game runs out of a single digital pin of a programmable microchip, which is soldered directly into the television screen. Anamanaguchi forever holds the high score.” Anyway, Killjet is proof positive that many games would be so much better if you had to hug the monitor to play them.

Last but not least was the true star of the indie arcade, and if you haven’t had a chance to play this most wonderful of animated cat gif games, what’s your problem? Though admittedly, Me0wtr0n is certainly not as accessible as one might expect or hope; here’s Joe struggling to figure out what the hell is going on…

Time for a random pic of the place, just because; in one corner there’s an old, busted Steel Gunner, next to an old, bust player piano…

… God, I remember spending so much time (and quarters) on it as a kid at the local 7-11. The game, not the piano. And here’s Dave and Joe wondering why in the hell would anyone in New York City would waste their lives watching the Jersey Shore…

… They’re basically right; I haven’t seen it myself (since I lack cable), but I’m pretty sure it’s nothing an hour spent at Penn Station on a Friday night, around 10pm, near with the LIRR or NJ Transit ticket areas can’t provide. And here’s Joe making friends with the resident feline…

Hey, it’s a cat playing the cat game!

Seriously! Somehow it managed to activate the secret level…

… Didn’t get a chance to discuss future plans with Kunal and Syed, since both were too busy running the show, but I should be finalizing plans for the big FORT90ZINE #3 launch party/Jizzmoppa symposium in the coming days. Thus far, it looks like it’ll be happening either April 2nd or 3rd, so if you’re in NYC, save the date!

A Very Young Melissa Joan Hart, Not Playing Sonic 2 Very Well

Alright, I should really try to keep this short and sweet, but before signing off, how about a rundown of all the totally amazing and awesome things I’ve been reporting elsewhere? Kicking things off with Tiny Cartridge, naturally…

- The DSi, in the bread form!

- Mentioned it around here before, but I’ve got some additional details behind those mini Dance Dance Revolution arcade cabs!

- Whaddya know, Sonic 4 has actually been around for ages! Plus other rom hacks, including Super Mario/Sonic/Rescue Rangers?

- Does anyone remember “Mr. Backup”?

- A look at some game related highlights from the recent Wonder Festival 2010, winter edition. Not sure what makes me salivate the most; that Monohime statue or these miniature Astro Citys:

- Once again, some recycled material from the blog, this time centering around fan art. Not going to lie; it was mostly an excuse to repost that Peach/Samus costume swap illustration, which I still think is the greatest thing ever.

- My favorite musical tracks from No More Heroes 1 & 2.

- Quite honestly the greatest House of the Dead 4/arcade lightgun player of all time.

- Hey, Fret Nice finally came out!

- If the Winter Olympics has gotten you in a game playing mood, that Mario & Sonic title isn’t your only option.

- Another oldie, but goodie; that NES speedrun in real life. There’s also a link to a pretty boss Family Matters/PaRappa The Rapper mash-up as well.

- LOL my people; how South Koreans are using mini sausages as iPhone styluses when it’s cold out.

- A look at what’s on the desks of various Nintendo employees:

- With this post, there is now a Melissa Joan Hart tag at Tiny Cartridge. I honestly feel very proud about that.

- The same goes for this one; never thought in a million years that Shintaro Kago would ever grace the place!

… I only wish I could be there to see Eric’s face when he comes back from vacation and surveys the damage!

Meanwhile, haven’t been nearly as active over at Mecha Damashii, but I haven’t been slacking either. Be sure to check out these Gundams that are totally made out of paper, I swear to God, as well as me bitching about what the Transformers have become. There’s also this:

As for Heavy dot com, make sure to check out the latest in video game fashion and my Heavy Rain demo impressions.

Real quick: a random game related link from someone other than myself, mostly because it’s such awesome news: EspGaluda II is going to be region free! Provided you get the standard edition, which is no big loss; aside from a bonus soundtrack disc, which I’m sure is hawt, the limited edition includes a 360 faceplate which isn’t anything mind-blowing. Anyhow, and like so many others, I had assumed that when Death Smiles was announced for domestic release, all future Cave shmups would be region locked since Mushihime-sama Futari was for all intents and purposes an experiment to gauge overseas reception. Sweet!

Finally, a few non-game related items from peeps of mine; in addition to her artwork, I’m a big fan of Hilary‘s writing as well, hence why I was pleased as punch to discover that she’s now writing about manga for some fairly fab blog that’s all about comics, graphic novels, and zines!

And not only does Katie’s latest installment of Beegirl contain a fantastic pin-up by our pal Pat, but… Any guesses as to what Katie and I did for Valentine’s Day? Well, because we got the romantic dinner out of the way the night prior (I took her out to this total hole in the wall but super cute, as well as super fantastic Japanese joint, which seriously had the best salmon teriyaki EVER), we spent the actual day grooming our ungrateful cat…

… Then we had that heart shaped pizza from Papa John’s and watched episodes of Law & Order: SVU via Netflix Instant. Alright, that’s it for now; I’ll try to be back soon whither either my No More Heroes 2 review or pics from Toy Fair (provided I get in; I never seem to have luck with registering at shows on-site).

“me0wtr0n wins.” – Phil Fish

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

In this post:
1. Katie’s birthday party!
2. Yo, I’m guest bloggin’, yo.
3. And GOTY 2010, without a doubt.

So how was everyone’s weekend? Mine was pretty rad, thank you very much.

Great Job!

As expected, Katie‘s birthday bash this past Saturday night was a huge success! Many fine folks stopped by to eat, drink, dance, and be merry. And of course, many pics were taken, but I’ll let Katie share the visuals on her end, since it was her party after-all. Though I can’t help but share just one, of Dave Mauro near the end of the night, which pretty tells the entire night in one fell swoop…

Anyhow, other highlights include…

- Me explaining to everyone my idea for a doll based upon Katie’s virtual self on the Wii. First off, I’m surprised that no one out there doesn’t do this already, like on Etsy. Think of all the money that could be made! Anyhow, I just think it would be super cute to see Katie curl up with a small, pint-sized version of herself! Whereas everyone else (in particular Hilary) thought it was just plain creepy. At least Dave Roman agreed with me!

- Also explaining to Colleen and Jeremiah the idea Katie and I have to send American’s Home Video a taped episode of America’s Home Video. Think about it; that’s HILARIOUS.

- Watching out of the corner of my eye during a good portion of the evening Hilary, June, and Raina, as they messed around with my painstakingly arranged and constructed assortment of figures. Thankfully, most of my animu girls were spared any dire mistreatment. Though if I had my naughty ones out in the open (I try to keep the creepiest ones in the bedroom, for just myself and Katie to enjoy privately), there would have been trouble, guaranteed.

- Joe Simko trying to fix the toilet seat. Some people at parties, when they get drunk, they like to tell crazy stories, Joe on the other hand likes to fix things. And the seat as been loose since the day I moved in, it’s just been one of those things that I got used to. Unfortunately, he was not able to tighten whatever bolts, but I still appreciated the effort!

- On a semi-related note, when Mooney confronted myself and Katie with, “Hey, either one of YOUR friends [pointing at Katie] or YOUR friends [pointing at me] doesn’t know how to flush the f*cking toilet and left a ‘nugget’ in there.” That Mooney, always a class act! And you know, that stuff just happens at parties sometimes, plus not everyone knows the particulars of every toilet out there.

- Discovering first-hand what a polarizing effect Tim & Eric‘s Awesome Show Great Job can be with people. And for the record, Katie and I simply cannot get enough of the program. Sorry Mike!

… There are others, but the night as a whole is somewhat of a blur. As for what we did to recover the next day, I introduced Katie to the splendor that is Lawnmower Man on Netflix Instant. I’m honestly shocked the name is not thrown around when folks talk/makes jokes about truly sh*tty movies. How it’s existed this long without becoming a 4chan meme is beyond me.

FORT90 X TINY CARTRIDGE

So this blog is going on a light hiatus for the next two weeks (not that I posted here every single day, though I have been picking up the pace as of late). The reason? I’m guest blogging over at Tiny Cartridge! Before heading off to the Philippines for some much needed vacation time, Eric asked me if I wouldn’t mind filling in (along with a few other fine fellows, including Adam from Attract Mode and Bruno from Eastern Minds), and I obviously (as well as enthusiastically) said yes.

I actually started Saturday so please stop on by! Oh, and maybe I shouldn’t admit to this publicly, but Simon mentioned to me how I was going to be asked to fill Eric’s shoes over at GameSetWatch as well, till Jenn Frank made herself available. Ha!

Though my plate is already quite full; I must also admit that I’ve been somewhat slacking off when it’s come to my duties over at Heavy dot com. So be sure to stop by there as well each day. Plus, I’ve also been somewhat neglecting Mecha Damashii… been meaning to do another installment of Americurry? I will try to change all that in the coming weeks. Though I might try to pop in and post a game review or two (since I seriously owe a bunch of parties some, and I feel like a total ass for dropping the ball on that end)! All this, despite the fact that this week might be just as crazy hectic as the next…

Enter… me0wtr0n!

On my “to do” list for this upcoming week is to figure out what the future holds with Babycastles.

Here’s the deal; there might be a special Jizzmoppa opening thing in early March! Or I might try to move it to early April and make it a duel Jizzmoppa opening/FORT90ZINE #3 launch celebration, since that’s when it should be finally ready (right in time for MoCCA, which is way earlier this year, and don’t even get me started there). There’s pluses and minuses for either or; hey NYC peeps, what do you think? Which would you rather be included to go to?

Anyhow, everyone should stop by this Tuesday because the indie arcade is being updated to take part in the Global Game Jam. GNILLEY, that game that you control by screaming at, and which has been gathering a nice amount of buzz in certain circles, plus five other titles from local game makers, will all be on-hand! As will myself.

Though the real star of the show is the one that everyone can play right here, right now. It’s basically the coolest thing ever. It’s basically… me0wtr0n! For those who might remember, that’s the game in which I somewhat helped with the production by donating 2,000+ animated gifs I had lying around. In the end, only about three or four were utilized, but still!

Oh, and, for those who might be a tad bit confused this might help. Again, it’s a shame that it won’t there at GAMMA 4, but it’s still a very good thing that’s worth helping out. And for those who haven’t heard, those krazy kids that make up Kokoromi need a little assistance to make indie gaming fest a reality, and YOU can help!

Every penny seriously counts, but take a good look at all the cool stuff that one can receive if you donate a certain sum. Though I myself have most of the bonuses being awarded, so instead, gonna ask Phil when he posts my name on the website and at the event if it can be covered in glitter or simply be a slightly bigger font than the other names.
