Flatlands

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

Just one month later, I’m curating yet another event at Babycastles Manhattan (crazy, I know), but this one is something completely different…

As usual, it’s about games… not the kind you play on a TV or your iPhone, but the type that rests flat on a table, surrounded by yourself and your pals, along with a deck of cards or perhaps some dice. Yup, it’s a board game, but not just any; this one that uses boards from various other games. It’s called FLATLANDS and is somewhat difficult to explain, you kinda need to see (and play) it for yourself. The most important thing to know is that it’s a brand new collaboration between Eric Zimmerman, easily one of the most influential and important figures in the world of NYC game development, and world-renowned architect Nathalie Pozzi!

And to help make the opening extra special, my good friend Chris Burke will be performing again, along with Tamara Yadao as Foci+Loci, which creates improvised soundscapes via custom created levels in Halo 3 and LittleBigPlanet. Again, this is a truly unqiue evening for those who love games of all kinds. For more info, please refer to the Facebook event page.

Attract Mode X Babycastles

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

In August, FORT90 X BABYCASTLES was New York City’s video game event of the summer. And now, ATTRACT MODE X BABYCASTLES aims to make history yet again; after way too many years, the arcade is making its long awaited return to 42nd Street!

But I can’t do it alone, hence why I’ve enlisted the aide of my partner in crime from Los Angeles, the brains behind the Attract Mode empire, Adam Robezzoli! And together we’re pooling the talents of some of our awesomest pals. First is a pair of brand new, custom painted arcade cabinets to add to the assortment that’s already been rocking Babycastles Manhattan, by Hilary Florido and Dave Mauro! Next on the walls are some wooden Pokemon designed by Maré Odomo and selections from the new gold standard in video game zines, The Controller by Cory Schmitz.

Sounds like a party? Well it IS a party! But what about the music? Well, how does an all star chiptunes line-up sound, including Zen Albatross, George & Jonathan, and godfather of NYC chiptunes himself, Nullsleep? Plus let’s not forget the most important part: the games. Available for free play are the entire line up of Attract Mode and Giant Robot’s ARTXGAMEs, all five of them, marking the first time ever in which every entry in the series has been brought together, ever!

It will truly be a night that will be talked about for a long time to come, so be there! For more info, and to RSVP, be sure to stop by the Facebook event page.
