“Let Me Touch You…”

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

Earlier this morning, Nintendo held a press conference in Japan for the DS and it turned out to be a really hot event. In addition to announcing their launch titles (including in the US), getting many of the top designer to gather and talk (including such heavy hitters as Miyamoto, Naka, and even Miziguchi), there were tons of stuff to see and play.

To be honest, even though I always knew I wanted a DS, I still had my doubts regarding most of their games. Aside from a few (most notably Wario Ware and Pac Pix), nothing I saw really made me go ga-ga. That was until I saw this Flash file, which doesn’t even feature the titles I really want in great detail (or at all). The games just look wicked fun and I’m actually thinking of picking one up at launch.

I know most people are excited with the DS version of Super Mario 64 (well it’s still one of the best 3D games ever), as well as Advance Wars DS. Plus, after finally seeing it in motion, I can now see why people have been going nuts over Nintendogs. But for me, the shades of UGA/Sonic Team title is still on the top of my most want to play list. Speaking of, new details just arrived the other, courtesy of IGN. First off, the game formerly known as “Project Rub” and later became known as “I Will Die For You” is now going to be called (in the US) Feel The Magic: XY/XX. In addition to rubbing scorpions off the back of the girl you want to impress, you’ll also be… get this… blowing out candles by literally blowing on the DS. Crazy…

Surprising at it might be, Meteos, Mizuguchi’s DS game, is… rather underwhelming. Though it’s really too early to critique, at this point it doesn’t seem nearly mind-blowing as I had hoped. Though I’m sure it’ll play just fine. Afterall, not only is Mizuguchi behind the game as producer, but it’s being designed by a former member of HAL’s Kirby & Super Smash Bros. Melee teams (he’s the other guy with Mizuguchi in that pic).

Finally, here’s a game called “Another” in which you play the role of a surgeon. I really hope it comes out here…

For some reason I’m not really interested in the Nintendo Palm Pilot.

I guess I can understand the skepticism. But it really is one of those things that you simply have to play before making a final judgment.
