Yes, The Subways Are Still Fucked

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

You know what I love? I love how no matter how hard I try, no matter how early I get up and am out the door, I’m ALWAYS late to work because of the subway. Today I had to be at SVA 9 sharp to help set up classrooms and install software (school starts next week as some of you already know), and my normally 30 minute commute took well over an hour. Why? Who the fuck knows.

I also love how not a single subway worker knows what the hell is going on, and how they’re always more than happy to let you know this with their oh-so cheery “I don’t know and I don’t care anyway, so get the fuck away from me” attitude.

Plus I love how as the entire subway system continues with their steady decline, we’ll all be force to deal with another asinine fear increase next year, despite the fact that its common knowledge that there’s a huge surplus in the MTA’s bank. And if I’m not mistaken, the MTA’s plan is to have regular fare hikes every two years or so. How the fuck can this happen? Oh wait, I forget… they have the entire city by the balls, and our mayor is some billionaire who’s hardly sympathetic to those that are most affected by the greedy, shoddily run subway system. I’m still trying to get over his “Just get a bike” response to the possible strike from a few years back.

The thing is, everyone knows that the additional money from any fare increase is not going back to the trains which really needs it but even more bullshit real-estate deals, things like the Olympic Stadium, which thank fucking God is not happening.

And like many others, I too want to know what the fuck the MTA is doing with all that money the federal government gave to help strengthen security in the wake of 9/11, such as the proposed video camera system, just like the one they have in the UK which was invaluable with their recent terrorist ordeal.

At least I can take solace in the fact that all my other coworkers are MIA due to the f’d up trains (hency why I’m writing and not working this minute). There’s nothing more annoying and embarrassing than being the only person affected, and almost everyone else lives in Brooklyn as well (like yesterday… oyvey).

And once again, the yellow line (which has the R, N, W, and Q trains) proves once again to be shittiest line of them all! Don’t even get me started on them shutting down the Cortland Street station, which makes going to and fro New Jersey about twenty times longer for MK & myself.

There are times were I absolutely cannot stand living in New York City, and today is one of them.

there was a huge fire in queens this morning–right under the end of the line on the N/W, near where we live. i think they were running the trains in and out of ditmars with extreme caution. it was really bad, a bunch of the stores on our main street got entirely gutted. :(

Well the problem as I’m now finding out from coworkers that got in after me is that some train stalled in Brooklyn, which created a domino effect. I know somebody who lives in Queens and was also late, so I guess the fire you speak of can be attributed to that.

It goes without saying that I’m sorry to hear about the fire in your neighborhood and I hope nobody was hurt.

Though regarding the problems over in Brooklyn, and the subway system as a whole, I am particularly bothered by the lack of communication between the MTA and its riders. They need to do a better job letting folks know what is going on, and this ranges from having sufficient info when it comes to service changes, to unexpected delays and their causes. If people know what is going on, they will be far more forgiving. Keep them in the dark and then you’re asking for trouble.

at least we aren’t under 8 feet of water right now…

    that said.

    the trains fucking suck.

worse off, we just got a new place off the J TRAIN.
and as far as i’m concerned, the N R Q W is the Millenium Falcon compared the the J Train…

Yeah, what happened (well happening) down south is pretty sad. MK’s brother went down there to help a friend move and all of sudden this major storm happens. Made us feel pretty bad for missing his calls while we were enjoying ourselves at the beach over the weekend.

As for the J train, yeah it does suck. But luck on the bright-side… at least you guys don’t live near the G train, aka the rape train (and those familiar with the train already knows that I’m not exactly joking here).

    privatize the subways!

the j has a nice scenic route through bklyn and queens, if you like graveyards. and have a bit of time on your hands.

the g is always a bit hit or miss, literally and figuratively. buy ka-bars for everyone you know on that line.

Yeah I could understand – the trains are fucking stupid. They do tend to make people late with their utter bull shit. They made me late tons of times with their bull shit. People like that don’t work hard enough to get real job and end up working doing shit like this. Eventually they’ll get fired and be sorry.
