Well? It IS Smaller

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

So late last night here in America (and sometime in the morning in Japan) the ?PSTwo? was finally unveiled to the public?

All I can say is that I’m amazed that Sony was able to take an already chintzy looking system and make it look even more fragile. What the hell happened to the guy who designed the PSOne? Now that was the epitome of brilliant design. But the PSTwo looks like one of those cheap South Asian imports that look like 32-bit consoles but have hardwired Famicom games?

? Well at least it is smaller. Plus it?s a top loader, which I guess is good in the sense that it might be a bit more durable than the stock PS2. But there?s also an external power brink, a la the GameCube, and? get this? no expansion bay. That?s right, there?s no room for the hard drive. Anyone who thinks that Final Fantasy XI players have been left in the dust is insane (I simply do not believe reports of no HDD support); I?m sure an external HD will be announced any minute now, if it hasn?t been done so already, but it still just makes the system look more of a mess than it does already.

But the real reason why people staying up well past their bedtimes for was for some new info related to the PSP. And guess what? There was none really, other than the price, which if I?m not mistaken, was not actually announced at the Sony event, but later on via a press release (it?s assumed they were so taken aback by Nintendo?s announcement of a $150 price point for the DS that same morning, they had? I dunno? think it over?). So now it?s set at $300. Jesus Christ. And the funny thing, is it will still sell. But better than the DS? Hard to tell.

Sony gave a complete run down of all the games that would be available, and of course, plenty of heavy hitters were listed. But were have any of these games on hand? Nope..

Well there was one title on hand, but it is believed that it wasn?t actually running off the unit?

BTW, credit goes to GAFer Sho Nuff for the awesome pics.

As for the event as a whole, I think another GAFer, metsallica, put it best?

“I stayed up until 5AM to see a shot of puyo-game-#4983948324 running on PSP? /ends self.

THANKS SONY.”
