This Is What You Do When You Are A Filipino Prisoner, I Guess

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

I’ve been so busy these past couple of weeks that I just realized that I am woefully out of touch with the internet. Case in point, Katie just asked if I’ve been to Team Assignment lately, and the answer was no. And man, have I been missing out…

Sure I’m still surfing the web 12+ hours a day, but most of it is for my cell phone blog. Which means I now spend more time checking out tech oriented sites like Engadget and Gizmodo, and less at video game related places, or hunting for wacky shit in general.

This is mostly reflected by my notepad of links; what I’ve always done is keep a text file handy, which I use to dot down the URLs of anything interesting that I come across and want to talk about later. And because I’ve been so busy, not only has that list ballooned out of control (I usually try not to let it get too long), but these days its mostly crap that gear-heads go ga-ga for, like robots and assorted wacky inventions coming from Japan. Actually, its mostly stuff about Transformers; the movie this summer brought about aton of renewed interest in the franchise (like some huge convention that recently took place). I’m really not sure if everyone else is as interested in 800 different Transformers-related items, but then again, I often take for granted that most folks aren’t as exposed to such things.

Though I will say real quick that the Soundwave that plays mp3s is almost out, and I’m seriously tempted with picking one up. But then there’s also the Optimus Prime made of legos. Decisions, decisions…

But yeah, its like the whole world wide web is passing me by. That’s such a stupid thing to say, I know. At one point, Joe (Simko) often that the internet was practically “made” for me, and I actually too pride in the crap I would unearth. It’s like investingating some bizarre other world that many either have no idea exists around them, or lack the wherewithal, patience, and/or guts to investigate themselves. Though mind you, and this is VERY important, but I’m not one of those dick-head interweb dweebs that loves to brag about something that they “discovered” online. Such virtual dick-waving is beyond retarded. Like, you found that wacky video of a fat gamer dork eating a piece of poo that he thought was a Snicker bar before anyone else. Congratulations. Who gives a fuck. It’s not like you created the vid in the first place. I love how pointing shit out is something impressive in this day and all. Sure its awesome finding and pointing out cool shit to friends and the like, but its not like the most important thing in the world… BTW, such the video I just described does not exist, and I really wish it did.

Anyway, and I know this also sounds so incredibly gay, but if I wanted to, I could literally spend a solid twelve hours checking out crap and never get bored. The internet is certainly intoxicating. It’s like crawling up with a good book by a warm fire… but one with poor grammar, more yelling, animated gifs, and lots of tits. But yeah, surfing the web all day and night is my idea of a good time, but thankfully, I also have a life.

So even though I kinda wish I didn’t have plans later tonight, face-to-face human interaction is still quite fun, and I love parties; it’s time for yet another Rocketship shindig, and those are never to be missed! That’s why I have to run, but real quick, I just have to share the most bat-shit insane YouTube video ever (at least this week’s): it’s from some prison in the Philippines, with all the prisoners re-enacting Micheal Jackson’s Thriller. And it’s just as amazing and creepy as it sounds.

That vid is actually the main reason why I decided to post today, believe it or not. Don’t know why I had to pad it with so much semi-self indulgent pontification. Guess I’m feeling a bit sorry for myself for not being able to skip town to take pics of cosplayers (again, Otakon is this weekend). But hey, at least I have a brand new modded PS2! Now I can finally check out all the games I’ve downloaded over the past couple of months (and finally free up some valuable hard drive space). I’m actually going to chronicle everything I try out right here, so keep you eyes on it.

Plus a modded system also affords the chance to play some of the games I got in Japan. I actually gave the Rilakkuma/Relax Bear a quick spin last night, and all I can say is that MK‘s head is gonna fucking explode.

I was actually in town for Otakon this year… it was really awesome, and there were a couple of fantastic costumes. You in particular would have liked an excellent rendition of Soundwave, but the best one was a giant Met (from MM), accompanied by like a 6 year old kid playing Mega Man (who was adorable). Dan has some pictures on his cell phone, once I get ahold of them I will upload them. And there was also an interesting panel on “The 10 games you should have played”, I’m actually in the process of writing up my experiences for NeoGAF.
