SPXtra 2006 (and other stuff)

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

So with SPX finally done and over with, I was hoping to take it easy this week. Didn’t happen. Being out of town caused my pre-existing backlog of stuff to do to swell even more so. Last night I had to blow off Joe (Salina)‘s show, which I had totally promised I would check out to make Matt Loux‘s big book release party, and I didn’t even make it to that cuz I do much shit to take care of at home. Once again, there’s just too much going on!

Though that’s not to say that I’m glad that all my friends are getting sick either; tonight was supposed to be a drawing party at Liz & Zane’s which I really wanted to hit, especially since Julia Wertz was in town and going to be there, and a chance to finally tell her in person how much I love Fart Party, but Liz is apparently not feeling well at all and Julia decided to get the hell outta dodge. Apparently she saw some freaky shit during her visit to the Big Apple that sorta freaked her out, like crackhead knife fights, which I guess I’m just used to. Bummer. But at least that gives MK another reason to stay home cuz she’s sick too (as is Robin).

Hopefully I’ll be able to make MK feel a tad bit better tomorrow when I give her a brand new iPod! It’s just like the previous one I obtained for her, in the sense that it was somebody else’s, but after a long search, the original owner was not found, hence why I’m passing it along to MK (since she wrecked the first one the other night while trying to replace the battery). Plus its also the blue Mini model (though I know that the Nanos also come in blue, but it’s USB 2.0 only and $130 brand new, so fuck that noise).

Anyway, because I’ve been so occupied and haven’t been able to catch up on any of what I’ve missed, I’m just going to post a couple extra pictures from SPX and other places that I keep forgetting about.

First off, as you might recall, during the Ignataz all us doodled throughout the entire affair since we had notepads and pens at every seat. We aside from drawing we also passed notes to each other. Here’s what Katie wrote…

… I just love whenever anyone makes a Burt Lancaster joke in this day and age (especially from someone outside my movie night circle). And since Liz seemed to really dig the arm wrestling portion of Friday evening, here’s a pic of her and Katie as they get set to go over the top…

Plus here’s one of Pat doing the robot that I totally overlooked last time (the blurriness kinda enhances things this time around)…

More than the comics themselves, the one thing I look forward to each and ever indie press comics show is some threads to wear, and this year’s SPX provided three new shirts to wear…

… the last one is from Paul Hornschemeier, who’s previous shirt, the yellow one with the lonely robot traversing a desert landscape, still one of my favorites.

Stepping away from comics, here’s something I found on the Insert Credit forums a while ago which is still pretty rad. Oh, those crazy Japanese…

Check out this awesome Sonic cosplayer; most diehard Sonic the Hedgehog fans are pretty creepy, but this one is at very decent on the eyes…

And finally, also courtesy of the IC boards, there’s this new guy who never says a single world but posts wacky Photoshops, and he’s quickly earned the hearts of us all. One of the first ones he did was based upon my affinity for white girls and my lack of interest towards Asian chicks (since I’m part Asian, I just don’t go totally ga-ga like everyone white dude). He’s done plenty of others, but unless you frequent the place, none of them are going to make sense…

Anyway, with no drawing party tonight, I guess its the same ol’ Friday night crowd: Japanese punk rockers and dock workers.

I want everyone to know that I asked MK what celebrity I should write in that letter and she suggested Burt Lancaster. She is the genius!

doood new york freaked me out something fierce. I don’t know how you fuckers live there, I spent the entire time in a perpetual state of shock that didn’t even start to subside until I reached brooklyn. Next time I’m on the east coast, I’m going straight to brooklyn and skipping all that new york city noise.
