Saw Domino last night. It wasn’t that bad actually. It’s pretty much exactly how it looks like in the the trailer: an ultra-sylish, fast-paced flick that uses violence to be funny and insightful (with mixed results) with all the herky-jerky camera movements and super saturated film stock that’s all the rage these days (or wasn’t that a while ago?). But in the end, I still enjoyed it, at least on a pure-mindless level. Though I have a feeling if I saw it again I wouldn’t like it nearly as much. And hey… any movie that has Christopher Walken, Tom Waits, AND Dabney Coleman can’t be too bad, right? Oh, and Keira Knightley is certainly fun to watch as well.
I saw it with Marc won a contest with the prize being free movies for a whole year. Since its runs out at the end of the month, he’s been seeing movies like crazy, with at least one, even two, a day. And despite all that, he still won’t see the Doom movie with me.
I know it’s going to be bad, its a video game movie, duh. But one without Uwe Boll attached, so it can’t be that bad. I know lots of people have been ragging on its big first person scene (which is supposed to be the film’s big “money shot”) but seriously, isn’t that the whole fucking point? In my opinion, the whole film should be in first person.
Anyway, real quick, some gaming news:
- Here’s a set of tools that allows one to extract character and monsters models from FFX & FFX-2 for viewing on a PC. You can also get all the character models for both games via a Chinese FF fan board here and here. And if you check out this GAF thread (which is where I came across the info in the first place), you can find a few examples of exactly who “meticulous” the artists are Square, such as this (warning: NSFW).
- And from the IC forums comes this hilarious eBay auction for Madden 2006. Every line written is pure comedy gold. My favorite line has to be either:
Because many early visitors to this auction could not understand satire, I have replaced my comic, PSOne images with actual Madden NFL 06 and ESPN 2K5 screenshots. This makes the content of this auction turn less ‘ha ha funny’ and more ‘uncomfortable laugh funny.’
Or the one in this image:
- So some woman bought her husband a used PSP with a memory card and later discovered some hardcore porn on it.
- Everyone seems to love the new backlight GBA SP, but a few quirks have popped up. The biggest one centers on the D-pad which apparently is not as tight or precise as the one from before. And now one person has discovered that there’s a smaller capacity battery running the show as well. Though its still around 10 hours, which is still good enough for anybody.
- What do you get when you take white boys who can’t rap and Nintendo. This.
- And folks who play games are getting older. Much older.

This weekend is gonna be crazy. First up is the Games for Change Conference which takes place tomorrow and Saturday. Its a chance for folks in the field of game design and academia to gather and discuss the potential video games have as a tool for educational and societal change.
Then on Saturday evening is both the opening reception for that comic art show at Giant Robot New York and The International Chiptune Resistance at the Tank.
And Sunday marks the start of a week-long 2 for 1 sale at Toys R Us. You know how these work…. buy two games and the third one is free (the cheapest one of the three actually). You can mix-and-match games from any consoles, but handheld games are excluded sadly. For me, I’ll be going for We Love Katamari, Soul Calibur 3, and Shadow of the Colossus (can’t wait!).
Plus Dave earlier today alerted me to Zombiecon. The midtown shopping spree dressed as a zombie sounds like fun. Not sure if I’ll be able to have a zombie get-up ready in time, so I might just have to be content with being eaten.
One last thing: I want to apologize to those who’ve purchased Unlucky online… I’ve been super slow when its coming to shipping (you the deal… post offices are such a pain in the ass). But I’ll be dropping them off in the mail by Monday. Promise!
