$9,100

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

- So Thursday night was an IGDA NY social mixer, a chance for various folks in the New York City area that are in the business of making games (or those wishing to crack into the field) to get together and chat, drink, and of course, network. I told John about it, who’s trying to get more involved in game space himself, so he was there, but aside from him and Dave (Gilbert), it was mostly fresh faces, which was actually quite nice. To be honest, I’ve sorta shied away from such things in the past it was always the same faces over and over again, but now that things are finally starting to boom in the Big Apple, there’s more opportunities, which of course leads to more people. Though truth be told, I was pretty bummed out by the end since I had to wonder why I myself am not back to designing games full-time, but hey, I guess I other stuff. Though I did meet someone else who’s also a “pure” game designer, which is what I like to call people such as myself who only design and don’t program. There used to be a point when such a person, at least in this country was unheard of… and to be honest, it made being out of work as a game designer at least somewhat understandable. But not anymore.

Anyway, it was also nice to see the IGDA NY flourish with such an function due to the hard work of Dave, the current darling of the NYC indie game dev scene, whom I kinda help get involved with the IGDA, as well as informed him of a NYC indie game dev scene in the first place (I knew he out of everyone else in my class this past summer would appreciate the Games For Change field trip, and it really did make a huge impact on him). And Dave was quite appreciate that night, because he passed along many, many thanks for helping him become part of the loop, and a rather drunken “I love you!” sort of fashion, which was really nice, and pretty funny (I sorta glad to not be the official lush of the party every once in a while).

- The next day, Friday, was pretty frustrating. Among other things, almost all of the 39 or so emails I sent out that morning did not reach their destinations, so the whole rest of the day it was “hey, didn’t you get my email?” Plus I had a harder than normal time accessing my mail via the web, and since my contract with my current web space provider (1&1) is almost up, I must ask once again: can anyone please recommend a good provider? I also don’t seem to have no mail on either front: a particular film I’ve been waiting for forever has been lost in the mail again (it was supposed to be this week’s Cinema Pixeldiso selection), along with at least one other game, plus the douchebag mail carriers around where I live, aside from reading my magazines, decided to watch my latest Netflix selection before passing it back, and they totally fucked up the envelope, which means I’ll have to pay for postage or some shit. So along with a ton of various other annoyances throughout the week, in addition to the fact that I had been such a social butterfly the entire week, I was just sick and tired of people in general by the end of the day.

Though I meet up with Robin after work, to show him all the indie game shops at the Fulton Street Mall. Though one major reason for my trip was to pick up a used game that not only is pivotal for The Gamer’s Quarter piece I’m working on, but which had been there on one store’s shelf for basically forever, collecting dust, and wouldn’t you know, when I actually am ready to buy it, it’s fucking sold out! But the funny thing is the last time this happened, it was over Everblue 2, and it had magically re-appeared in another store! But I didn’t get it because since then I had rented it via GameFly and it’s been sitting on my television, unopened, for the past two months. Again, I’ve been super busy.

Afterwards, I went back to my place, with the plan to recharge my batteries and wait till MK arrived, then go to Robin’s together and join him and Liz for some drawing. So I finally popped open Everblue 2 and…. its nice! Nothing mind-blowing, and the interface is chunky. But the tone and atmosphere is quite nice, and there’s plenty of blue (skies and water) it did a great job of chilling me out. For those who don’t know, its basically a scuba diving simulator. All you do is swim around the ocean floor, looking for treasure or taking pictures of fish. That’s it. No bad guys or any of that stuff. Hence why its really not for everyone. Though unfortunately, all my memory cards were full, so I couldn’t save my progress. I think I’ll pick the game up (watch it not be there… and if someone gets it from reading this, all I can say is you suck dick, cock-knobber!). Anyway, instead of going out, I decided to just go to bed early, around 11, which is early for me for a Friday night.

- I had to work the next Saturday morning, which was lots of fun, especially the subways during the weekend are a whole different level of hell. Again, I need to stop thinking I could ever possible be on time to anything if I’m relying on the subway, especially on the weekend, and even if I leave the house super early. Afterwards I met up with MK at the Virgin Megastore and came pretty close to picking up Guitar Hero 2. I swear, I have yet to hear anyone not say that it simply trumps the first one in every single way possible. But I passed, at least for now.

Later on we went back to Brooklyn and stopped by Mike (O’Connor)‘s place. Joe (Salina) and his girlfriend swung by and we all just sat around and talked while enjoying some beer. MK had met Mike and Joe before, at my last birthday party, but they did have much chance to chance to chit-chat with so many other people and things going on, so I was wondering how the night might go, primarily if she would grow tired of us yucking it up, especially when it came to talking about the Insert Credit Forums. But that didn’t happen thankfully since everyone likes hearing about the wacky antics of basement dwelling Kojima fans that watch too much fucking anime, right? Among the many stories swapped were tales of my crazy ex-girlfriend, which I thought I had passed along, but hadn’t. The whole time Mike’s eyes were bugging out, with his hands covering his mouth. Meanwhile Joe laughed at first, but then stopped, and I thought I had offended the guy, but he said that he just didn’t have the energy to anymore. Mike’s wife Liz has stopped by that point, and when I apologized if I was at all offensive (my vivid details when describing the horrible anal sex episode, as well as goofing on a person who has to take five times the normal prescribed about of lithium… enough to kill a horse… could be considered tasteless, among other things to some), Mike responded with “Hey, she married me!

After about five glasses of Yuengling, which according Mike is like five thousand beers to you white people, I was pretty drunk, and it was getting pretty late, so we all called it a night. But I was hungry, and since I thought it might be best to have something absorb the booze swishing around my stomach, I asked MK if we could go to the White Castle near me. And the drive in took forever, but at least someone, I’m assuming the person living in the apartment right next door, was watching a porno really, really loud, and that was fun.

- The next day was nice and chill, as every Sunday should be. MK & I went over to Rocketship, which we try to hit every Sunday if we’re in Brooklyn, but this one was kinda special since Raina and Abby were having a book signing geared specifically for kids, which meant plenty of cookies and ice cream. As expected, the regular comics crew was there; in response to a suggestion of mine that some of us do something this upcoming Saturday, Steve wondered if I was insane given that it also the eve of the Wii launch, and then I gave him shit about, not so much wanting to wait in line all night long for a system but being worried that it’ll be sold out, which I felt bad about since, hey, everyone has their own definition of fun I guess (once again, I just have strong issue with the fact that all this system launch hysteria, primarily the late night line waiting, is all so orchestrated). Then again, I’ll be there with the rest of the Nintendo-diehards… though in my case, I’m getting paid to do so!

MK & I then went home to chill out for a bit before heading to Willamsburg for a show. I played a bit of Chibi Robo, then MK, who totally fell in love with the game. And it was further proof that any girl out there who either doesn’t like video games or thing they are too hard needs to date a game designer to show them what’s up. Anyway, MK was right in saying that the main reason why I like the game so much is that it stars a cute little robot that likes to clean the house.

After about a few hours of GameCube, we drove to Willamsburg to see Seamonster, aka Todd Webb play. For some reason, he had neglected to give any of the other folks around here, like Dave and Raina a head’s up, so it was just MK & myself, along with a bunch of tragically hip hipsters. My fave was the girl who looked just like Maggie Gyllenhaal (at least, she was the only girl who didn’t have a haircut that made her look like a British schoolboy, circa the early 60s) that wore a single bell around her foot, so she annoyingly rang wherever she went. Some people and their thirst for attention. But fuck that noise, we were there just for Todd, and it was great seeing the guy, though quite interesting to see him in rock star mode (well, with a heavy dash of folks, along with his indie cartooning roots). But his songs were nice… mostly about boys with head filled with helium in love with dead girls. Plus he cracked several jokes about Colonel Sanders, due to a combination be having just been at his birthplace a few days prior and road dementia. He even said that his spirit might be why he and his friend Tim who was also playing that night woke up one morning in a motel with matching chicken bone tattoos (and $100 in cash in Tim’s pockets for some reason). But more than anything, the idea of Todd with tattoos was rather shocking, so I had to take a picture, and here it is…

… though now that I finally have a chance to really look at his arm, it looks more like stuff on a skin color shirt or bandage than his real arm. Which makes me wish I had seen the picture earlier, before telling everyone that he has tattoos, which got a “WTF?!?!?!” response from everyone I told.

- As for today, I’ve just been trying to catch up with all the news I missed over the weekend. The PS3 launched in Japan, and as expected, it wasn’t without incident. Though the last thing I expected was to hear that lines would be dominated by surly, and poor, Chinese immigrants.

Meanwhile in America, things just keep getting worse. GameStop recently announced that they will not be able to fill their pre-orders, which pretty much means that, yes, rioting in the streets with happen. Whereas everyone waiting in line all night long for a Wii will more than likely be docile Nintendo devotees holding hands and humming kumbaya (and the theme to Zelda), I’m fully expecting the PS3 night before to basically include people beating the ever-living shit out of each other, and I’d be lying if I also wasn’t planning to hit all the Gamestops in Manhattan Thursday night.

Though truth be told, one of the ugliest things to come from all of this, at least the thing that really pisses me off the most, is how ultra annoying and downright embarrassing various members of the press are acting during all this. And as one person put it best, you really can blame it on the blog-fication of journalism. It’s like, you get free stuff, you’re cool, we all get it. Granted, its one of the nicest perks, getting free systems and games, often before they come out, and sometimes its fun to brag, but being a dick about is obviously not cool. Hence why I want to apologize if I ever act in such a way, though if I do, its totally not intentional, seriously.

- Anyway, back to the challenge that everyone out there is going to have to face to get their hands on their PS3′s, even if its already paid in full… I hope at least this guy gets his PS3, since he already sold it on eBay for $9,100. Again, nine thousand and one hundred dollars. Jesus fucking gamer nerds…

And of course, its been YTMND-ed already, of course. Jesus fucking anime nerds….

Oh, and here’s another insane game related eBay auction, this time for a super rare Atari 2600 cartridge, for the game Atlantis 2 which the seller is asking for one million, seven hundred and fifty thousand. The seller explains what makes the game so rare, though it hardly justifies the asking price of almost two million. Just another fine example of fucking insane (and sad) most diehard game collectors are.

- Kinda related to eBay: Radiant Silvergun, one of the most sought after Sega Saturn games, which routinely fetches $200 for just a used copy alone… and I hate to say it, but its actually worth it… best damn shmup ever IMHO. Though one might not have to fork over that amount of dough after-all. According to The Magic Box, its been rumored that the PS3 might offer Saturn games for its own Virtual Console. And I can hang with that! It would mean that I’d be willing to pay $600 for a video game system since that means I’d be spending $400 for the ability to play other games.

- So it seems that me talking about Second Life so much as of late as prompted at least a few friends of mine to give that game a try. And I must confess, I’m kinda tempted to try it out myself, if only for the chance to run around and crash furry gathers (it does seem to offer folks plenty of options to fuck with folks). Anyway, here’s your latest video, this one dealing with Gremlins.

- Courtesy of the IC forums is perhaps the coolest Game Over sequences ever (right next to Sega Rally’s “GAME OVER YEAHHHH!!!” that is).

- Here’s a new DS game that turns the system into a guitar, literally; the touchpad emulates the strings that you strum with the stylus, exactly like a guitar pic. Though it apparently doesn’t have any songs included, so it may not play much like a game like, say, Guitar Hero. But you can at least plug it into an amp and “play” the thing. This vid does a good job illustrating what it does.

- Check out Soul Gainer, a new MMO I think, if only because its slogan is the best bit of Engrish all year.

- And here’s a nifty looking doujin shmup called Butterfly Samurai which I’m interested in, simply because it reminds me of Kolibri.

- I also found out via K Thor that Joanna Newsom’s new record, which is called Ys, is named as such so “gamers will know what it means”, at least according to her producer on a NPR interview. And yeah, Ys happens to be the name of an old Falcom RPG… I just never expected it, let alone her, to be related to video games. Interesting.

I?m still trying to figure out if that Gran Turismo from the Cardigans actually has anything to do with the game of the same name.

- Finally, and its not video game related, but its still totally worth checking out: if you haven’t checked out MK’s Comic Tools blog yet, now is the time. Today’s artist is Bryan Lee O’Malley, whom I’m really surprised more gamer nerds don’t know about. Hopefully my look at Scott Pilgrim for GameSetWatch (coming out… soon) will change all that. Though my fave entry thus far as to be Matthew Bernier, primarily due to his absolutely insane inking methodology.

Oh, and Katie has a new blog as well, which is all about the art scene in Syracuse. Check ‘em out.

Mysteries…

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

- Real quick, and as mentioned previously, I saw Superman in glorious HD last night, and it was pretty awesome. But what made it particularly enjoyable was enjoying a slice of left over birthday cake while watching it, which was Superman themed of course. I got Supe’s chin! Anyway, like many films I’ve re-watched in HD, not only did it look amazing, but it sounded awesome as well. The theme to Krypton never sounded better! As did his scream at the end, and I don’t care how cheesy and illogical him turning back time was, its still one of the all time-time greatest super hero/movie moments ever (right up there with Batman driving the Batmobile with Vicki Vale next to him, right after the awesome alleway fight in the first Tim Burton flick, or the Spiderman trying to stop the runaway train after his fight with Doc Ock).

Oh, and we also watched some scenes from Mutiny on the Bounty, the opening to one of the musical episodes of Xena, a bit or Rosemarie’s Baby, and South Park, which I really enjoyed, not because it dealt with the Wii, but because of the Buck Rogers parody (hearing that theme again was pretty intense… I was a HUGE fan of the show growing up in Korea). We were also supposed to start season 2 of Slings and Arrows, but Arrested Development was on, and it was getting late for me…

- So yeah, this is finally it… the home stretch. The PlayStation 3 is officially a little over a week away. And I gotta say, I’m pretty excited about it, even if its at purely at the level of morbid curiosity. I know I always say it, but I’ve been super busy, so I haven’t been able to keep abreast of the finer details, but last I heard, Sony had to lessen the number of units available for the Japanese launch by 20%, though Sony has stated that it won’t affect the American launch. Speaking of, I also heard that everyone who pre-ordered the system online through Best Buy had their cancelled, which has to suck, even with the $10 digital coupon. But hey, that means an extra ten bucks for whatever other Wii game disgruntled gamer may be tempted to pick up!

Meanwhile, in the “real world”, people are already camping out for the system. Crazy isn’t it? I can also think of a few other terms to describe the act. I wonder if any of those folks have read this “helpful” guide?

My take on all the pre-launch day madness, primarily the camping out part, is that its kinda retarded, at least how its done today, primarily because its expected. I recall as a kid seeing pictures from EGM and Nintendo Power of Japanese high school students and businessmen that have been online all night for a copy of Dragon Quest 3 of Final Fantasy 2 and thinking that was ultra rad (mind you, this was back when the term “rad” was commonly used). But it was awesome because it all spontaneous and unscripted. Now pre-launch camp outs are expected and pre-planned, primarily by companies that just want yet another means of grabbing headlines (hence why all those bullshit shortages are totally what companies like Sony want in the end, obviously).

But hey, it’s working! Virtually everyone I know cannot stop talking about the PS3 launch. Almost no one I know was able to secure a pre-order, so mostly its talk about “strategies” in terms of how they were going to get one, and where. And of the folks I know who managed to supposedly get money down on one, every single person with the exception of one plans of selling it on eBay for a handsome profit. Katie’s friend Drew has that exact plan, and at first I have him shit since I just think its a dumb thing to do, but hey, is people are willing to pay $1200 for the damn thing… plus, Drew’s a college student, and he could really use the money.

- Speaking of, I guess the one question that everyone has been asking is if I’ve pre-order a Wii or not. And the answer is no… simply because its all so unnecessary. One would have to assume that Nintendo is set to console those who can’t get ahold of a PS3 (figuratively and literally!), though it was nice to hear Nintendo state that 4 million of the units will be on-hand on day one since it helped to alleviate my recently increasing last minute excitement/anxiety over its launch. And again, despite my attitude towards standing out in the cold all night for a video game system, I just may end up going to the big Wii event at the Toys R Us in Times Square, at least to be on-hand as a reporter, to offer an account for GameSetWatch. Though I’m also tempted to do the same for the PS3, if only to witness people literally bash each other’s brains out in the middle of the street for the few systems that will be available. Though back to the Wii, I may just hang out at Times Square all night and just go to the Nintendo Store just a few block away since, as also expected, they will have more than enough available.

- Plus, also courtesy of Joystiq, here’s something which I never got the chance to address before, and even though its really old news, I know not everyone out there frequents video game message boards and news sites, so maybe it’ll be new news, plus Joystiq also made a rather handy chart: here’s a list of all the virtual console games at launch, and listed by region. Again, its hardly surprising to see it be so skimpy (hey, Nintendo’s still making a killing with old SNES re-releases for the GBA, hence why that section is so anemic), though I have to wonder why Gradius didn’t make it stateside. Oh well… glad I have a real copy and the actual system! But it means that playing Recca on a television seems more of an impossibility than ever (though I could always just hack my Xbox, but I’m sorta busy for that right now).

As for Sega’s line-up, its nice and boring. Hey, at least Gunstar Heroes is present! Though unfortunately for Dave, Shadow Dancer isn’t.

- Sticking with Sega for just one sec, a certain early build of Sonic 2 seems to have surfaced. I haven’t had a chance to check it out, but this just might be the version that was featured in an episode of Nick Arcade oh so many years ago (for those who have no idea what I’m talking about). I was so into the game at the time of its release and remember obsessing over the minute differences between what I saw in preview screenshots courtesy of game mags and the final product, so I was literally freaking out when I saw what was obviously a pre-release build on television (as well as hearing music from Sonic 1). Plus it also featured Melissa Joan Heart, who I had a MAJOR crush on at the time.

- Back to the PS3, it seems that the system (well, at least debug units) are finally getting in the hands of journalists, and as expected, folks who had at first written it off are all of sudden declaring it as God’s greatest gift to us since Jesus. Which might very well be true, though some are just saying that their opinions are just either being bought by Sony’s gold, or they just want to be bragarts about it. Meanwhile, those who seem to be extremely critical have been accused of expressing sour grapes for not having one.

I’ll admit it; I hate the PS3 primarily because I wasn’t able to get (a free) one!

And since I don’t watch TV anymore really, maybe everyone’s seen them, but for those who missed it, here’s one of the new ads for the system. I guess the “red e” is back? They should have brought back the purple polygon head back as well.

- Another bit of pretty old news: production on the Halo movie has officially stopped. Last month Fox and Universal, the film’s original financiers, backed out. Then Microsoft said that they would fund the entire project themselves, and even equated the Halo motion picture as an independent film (which it technically would be), but now that pull has been pulled. And its a shame really, since I was actually really looking forward to Neill Blomkamp’s feature film debut. It just seemed with him and Peter Jackson the chance of an exemplarily movie based on a game was totally possible.

Then shortly after came word that another live action movie based on the Street Fighter franchise is apparently underway, this one only focusing on Chun Li. Ummm… no. The gold rules is the more characters represented the better, since that means less time to dwell upon the fact how one dimensional the character is when you can simply move onto the next one, especially if they’re from a fighting game.

- The next phase of Microsoft’s strategy is allow people to download movies and television shows onto their 360s. The only real plus side (or negative, depending on your point of view) is that it further cements the possibility that there just might be no real winner to the format wars. Though one has to wonder how well buying and storing movies is going to work considering the relatively skimpy hard drive on the system.

The move also prompted Sony to make their asinine statement for that day:

“PlayStation 3′s content is designed for everyone to enjoy right out of the box, no matter which configuration you purchase. We would never segregate or shut out any of our consumers from our entertainment experience because they didn’t buy the top of the line system. Both PlayStation 3 versions available on November 17 include hard drives for downloading content.”

Sometimes I wish they would really just shut up.

- Though aside from Nintendo, Sony, and MS making all the headlines, the juiciest scandal going on right now is that Tomonobu Itagaki, the man in charge of Team Ninja, and responsible for the Dead Or Alive series of games, which has constantly pushed both boob bouncing physics forward while also pushing the portrayal of women further back into the stone age has been slapped with a sexual harassment suit in Japan. This thread at Insert Credit has the details, and as I already stated there, women already have it so shitty in Japan, ESPECIALLY in the corporate structure, that it must have been unbelievably bad for the accuser to make a stand like this (either that or she just didn’t want to take any shit, and in either case, good for her).

- Also via the IC forums (from the resident crazy Brit who’s brain due to his obsessing over Sonic furry-centric fanbase to exact… but I say that because I love you James!), comes word of a game that’s more or less the predecessor to Rez for the Commodore 64, Deus Ex Machina.

- But real best thing to come from the IC all week…. aside from the still mysterious “Scarface123″‘s latest Photoshop message to myself that is…. is a totally awesome thread that chronicles a bunch folks adventures in the game that I totally fucking love to hate, Second Life (NSFW btw). It’s chock full of pics, and here’s pretty much one of the few that doesn’t feature naked people covered in blood (and totally nude), furries, anime, bad 9/11 memorials, urination, discarded genitalia, or David Blane frozen in a block of ice; just a bunch of folks sitting around watching Oprah…

- Oh, and check out this vid from the game featuring POKEMANS!

- And here’s the trailer for the new Burger King Xbox/Xbox 360 game, Sneak King. Am I going to get it? Fuck yeah! It’s only $4, plus I still like their chicken sandwiches.

- Time for a speed run vid, this one featuring a Super Mario Bros hack called Air which I’ve mentioned in the past. It’s pretty crazy!

- This is something that I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot more of in the near future: its AiLive, and it’s tools for those who are making Wii games. Check out how it works as well as a pair of case studies.

- So I received my copy of GTA: Vice City Stories in the mail last week, though once again, been too busy to crack it open. Though now I’m more interested in PC versions of the games due to all the modding that’s been going on (and not because of Hot Coffee, believe it or not). Take this mod for Vice City that adds zombies for example (which I know has been around for a while, but I just found out about recently). The idea of Miami Vice meeting Resident Evil sounds like too much fun, and I’m assuming both MK and Katie would love a piece of that action as well (MK because she loves zombies and Katie because she loves Tubbs…. I really wish I had a link to that Tribute to Tubbs YouTube vid that Drew made handy).

- Xyanide, the Xbox shmup that no one bought or even noticed (except for me of course!) is getting a sequel on the PSP?

- And lastly, Robin just told me that Gamestops are no longer accepting pre-orders for Twilight Princess for the Cube. The reason? “Something about extremely limited quantities from Nintendo.” And… oh boy, here we go again. But the thing is, this really isn’t Nintendo’s style. Robin also read my mind when he wondered if this might turn into another Panzer Dragoon Saga episode.

For a while now there’s been debate whether Nintendo was actually going to release the game for the Cube. We’ve already lost Super Paper Mario, but to loose Zelda would really, really suck (and yes, I plan on having both versions, commence pointing and laughing… I’m just a HUGE Zelda fanboy). And even though Nintendo has stated that it was still coming out the last time the rumor of its cancellation popped up (which was only a few weeks ago too), they could just release 50 copies and go “See, we did release it!”

Anyway, here’s hoping Nintendo doesn’t go all Sega on us.

“Hey, nice gloves!”

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

So yeah, my trip to Syracuse this past weekend…

I met up with MK and Robin in Hoboken around 4ish. The plan was to head out earlier, to beat the evening/pre-weekend traffic congestion, but each of us ended up getting held up in some form of fashion, hence why we ended up just crawling along at one mile per hour just outside of city limits for a solid hour plus. But soon we got rolling, and the sights of buildings and homes (and civilization in general) began to fade away to darkened farms and mountainsides. Car conversation ran the gamut, but I recall a good deal of it centering on pro wrasslin’.

We finally arrived around ten and the floodgates of remembrance were totally open, especially for MK. It had been about three of four years since she was last in her college haunts, and she immediately had fun pointing out various school buildings and all the different places she lived as a student. Each one of us hates where we grow up, yet we all can’t help but get a little giddy when he comes back, to see the familiar sights (as well as gasp at the things that have changed). I guess its all part of that small pat on the back we like to give ourselves (or hope to), a congrats for having moved on to better places and not sticking around dullsville.

Anyway, we rolled into Katie‘s driveway around 10 and the first stop on the tour was for food, and that meant a trip to Dorian’s, a tiny little pizza and hero shack that I had been hearing about for a very long time from MK, primarily their chicken sandwiches. And mine was indeed quite tasty. As I ate, I was able to witness MK and Robin lament how far the once grand Daily Orange (the daily student newspaper that used to have a thriving and bustling comics page that introduced the world to, among other things, Rehabilitating Mr Wiggles and the Perry Bible Fellowship) has fallen. Then we walked around the block after dinner, and at that point it was starting to get a bit cold, so I decided to put on my gloves, which lead to the following exchange…

Katie: Hey, nice gloves!

me: Thanks! They’re my rape gloves!

Everyone started to laugh, even the woman who was a total stranger who happened to be standing there as I passed by. And that moment more or less set the mood for the rest of the trip. Afterwards we all got back in the car and drove around all night to check out even more familiar sights. Around Katie’s neighborhood we noticed a huge prosession of college kids walking the streets; apparently some big party got broken up by the cops. When we came to a stop light, I decided to roll down my window and chat with one of them…

me: Hey, how’s it going?

college dude: Sup man.

me: What’s going?

college dude: Not much. Just chilling. What about you?

me: Well, I just had a really awesome chicken sandwich!

Then the light turned green.

me: Alright dude, catcha later!

Later on, as we went about the campus, I tried my best to recreate the best part about our trip to SPACE, which was just yelling at hapless college students with such zingers as “Somebody’s gettin’ laid tonight!” or “RateMyTaint.com!!!” or “PaintMyTaint.org!!!” I guess you had to be there.

Driving around town all weekend really drove one basic message really home, and that was Syracuse is kind of a wasteland, and on a whole lot of levels (something which MK, Robin, and Katie have been telling me for while now). I’ve been to college towns before, but never one that was so huge and so desolate, as well as so depressing. Its basically a modest sized college town that’s stretched the way out, with no sense of rhyme or reason. So the whole place is all deserted and quite creepy as well, but its also falling apart. I forget who said it, but Syracuse is basically pre-Berlin Wall falling down the college town, and I was there when the weather was really nice (it was only around the 50s with some slight overcast… generally its far colder, with non-stop rain and snow). There was just this pervasive malaise that slowly crept up just a few hours upon being there, which everyone who goes to school there has to come to terms with. Also not helping is the general meat-headed populous who attends the school. Hence why MK and Robin back during their day were considered the school “freaks” which in tern led to an eternal bond of friendship (which includes others, such as Katie, Matt Singer, and others), but that’s just how it always works out. You either be a freak and find others to do shit to forget the banality of it all, or you just become a raging alcoholic. Basically, the all-American college lifestyle!

But whereas I was quietly creeped out by it all, MK took the opportunity to soak it all in, via her camera. One of her main missions was to take reference shots for her new book Cross Country, hence the stroll around campus on foot (right after lunch at yet another fave eatery from back in the day, Cosmos, which was well regarded for its pizza, and my BBQ chicken pizza was indeed very good, and its creepy bathroom, which was a dungeon alright, though nothing will ever top that shitty pancake place near Chinatown for pure Silent Hill 1 level’s of insanity). And it was only when MK went bonkers about taking pictures of one school building because they had added a friggin’ hand rail for some steps that were previously very dangerous without them did I realize how lame going to that school was/is. At the college bookstore we met up with Katie’s very good friend Drew whom I had only met for the first time and for a few minutes at the end of the SPX trip (and whom I had freaked out with my impression of the last scene from the second Invasion of the Body Snatchers film). We then hit a few other places, such as the Salvation Army which is quite the big deal around there since, once again, there ain’t shit to do in those parts. I found an old Wayne?s World book that I thought about picking up, till MK asked “So do you think the previous owner read that book while on the toliet?” Point taken. I also got a good laugh at watching two awkward college dorks (there were plenty to be found, just killing time) as one tried to get a closer look at one of the bag of random toy parts hung on the wall and almost trip and break his neck on some toy horse on the ground. I also saw this, which seemed like a regular old robot till either Robin or MK noted that it looked like a Furby with all the fur ripped off….

Though for the most part it the place was packed with clothing, and for the dudes was plenty of discarded wrestling shirts cira 2000-02. Meanwhile, for the ladies, the selection was actually quite vast with some gems here and there. Here’s one prime example…

Right after the Salvo, we passed by an Aldi’s, which is this ultra poor person’s grocery store that I’ve been obsessed with checking out since forever. Aside from having nothing but generic brands, the place is so cheap that they don’t even have shelves; everything is just right there on the floor. They don’t even have paper or plastic bags, you have to figure out your own way how to carry your purchase home. Plus I heard its patron are beyond surly, hence my interest despite MK constantly saying “no fucking way” in regards to setting foot. But this time I was actually able to go inside, with Robin as my wingman. And a thrill it was… they had these brand that I had never heard of’s cupcake that looked all stale. Not the cupcakes themselves, but the pictures of them on the box actually looked stale. Everyone in the store was a total zombie… it was almost like they couldn’t see us, like we were on a different plane of existence. I think I saw some old lady bleeding from the ears. Robin and I stuck around just long enough to laugh and point, then ran the hell out of the place, where MK still had the motor running. Then we went to the Sound Garden, the local music store which had a really nice selection of new and used CDs and DVDs (and the prices were pretty awesome). This again brought MK and Robin back to their college days of just bumming around and looking for music for hours on end. I ended up getting a Matthew Herbert CD that Katie recommended which turned out to be really nice.

The next major stop was at an indie game store I wanted to check out called Game Craze. I personally love going to indie game shops, especially in small towns in the middle of nowhere since you know you’re going to find something hard to find, or just plain crazy, which in this case was the guy running the store. The place had a very decent selection of games for all the current systems (PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, GC, GBA, and DS) plus plenty of older systems like PSone, Saturn, N64, SNES, Genesis, and NES. There was a Jaguar in a box and even a Wonderswan Color for sale, and just $20! Though aside from Judgement Silversword, and maybe Gunpei, I can’t think of any reason to actually have the system (plus when I tried playing one, I recall it feeling rather uncomfortable). Also worth nothing was an old SNES store demo display, the ones you used to see in stores back in the day, running Final Fight, though the controller was busted. There were also two bins of random games without their boxes and just in plain jewel cases. We all felt a little bummed out to see Animal Crossing for the Cube for just $6 since game simply deserves… more (also, earlier in the morning, MK & I watched Katie go around in her Animal Crossing town and just hit the residents in the head with a shovel… fun stuff). Katie also came up with an idea for a Fanny & Alexander game.

Among their used NES games was Faxanadu, a title I’ve long been a fan of but never technically owned, so for just $7 (and for a mint looking cartridge) I figured why not? The whole time we couldn’t stop starring at the literally slack-jawed game store clerk who looked bored to tears, and beyond oblivious to the two Asian kids who were just hanging out there the whole time, asking him questions which went totally ignored. In our gang wondered if they were his kids, so when I went to pay for my game I decided to make chit-chat, and at a comfortable point asked him if they were indeed his, and his response was “God no. Do I look like I have a recessive gene?” Yikes. And apparently, either MK, Robin, Katie, or Drew overheard the guy said, this time to the kids “I could have been somebody, like a nurse, if I had gone to college. But instead I’m here…” Just more proof that game store people are some of the saddest sacks of shit on earth.

Later that night, and after dinner, we went back to Katie’s and watched a bit of Beyond the Mat which Robin had passed along to Katie, who’s now interested in learning more about wrestling, and that documentary couldn’t be a better start. Then we went out to the local college bar called Taps and I had some the cheapest beers ever. Unfortunately, since its a college town, the place closed down at just 2, though Drew had gotten wind of a party going on in the neighborhood, and that’s where we went next. Thing was, Drew never got a response whether or not if it was indeed happening or if it was cool to stop by, but once we arrived at the scene we saw something going on and said fuck it, then just went in. The party was definitely slowing down, with most of the booze consumed, but I managed to find an open 24 pack which no one noticed by raiding because everyone was too busy playing beer pong. It was also apparently someone’s birthday since some cake was available, and I helped myself to a slice (actually two). Soon we found ourselves in the kitchen trying to find something else to drink or eat and eventually chatted it up with one of the dudes who lived there who has a Norwegian accent that totally sounded fake, but probably wasn’t. Later I tried wishing the birthday girl happy wishes and asked how old she was, and then she snapped back with a very sloppy and drunken “Don’t you patronize me!” I gotta admit… I’m glad to taste a bit of the college lifestyle, even if its so after the fact.

The next day we just went to yet another grease spoon and I had hot dogs for lunch, and they were damn good. MK’s French Toast looked ridiculously greasy and rather disgusting, but she didn’t care since she was in heaven with all the crazy looking people around. She spent the whole time just madly scribbling in her sketchbook, with a real fondness for the Garth (from Wayne’s World) looking waitress. Then we went to a local park to walk around a bit before heading out. Here’s a pic of three of them, looking stoic, almost like the cover to some music release…

And may as well pass along a few other random pics, including a bit of the remaining bits of a food fight which apparently took place in the park, perhaps the night prior…

Here’s a huge stack of sadly broken NESs from Game Craze…

And here’s the cover to some wacky DVD that was being sold at the Flying J, a truck stop that all different sorts of entertainment geared towards those with redneck tastes…

Among the many surreal things to be seen at Syracuse was the Ninja Bikes store, but I took a picture of that with MK’s camera, so I’ll have to grab that from here next chance I get (hopefully it isn’t too blurry).

As for the all that’s been happening since then, there’s been a lot. Some of it has been not too exciting, while other bits of it has been damn near thrilling, but which I can’t or won’t talk right now (though I’m just dying to pass along details in regards to one particular “thing”). And one major component of it has been damn near depressing, but again, that’s for a later time, maybe. I guess the biggest thing from Monday was that wacky email from the firm representing Nintendo. For those who are curious, there have been no further developments, but if there is, I’ll be sure to pass it along.

And as for yesterday, it was a big day for video games; Guitar Hero 2 finally came out, as did Gears of War. I also hung out with Colin and Dave (Mauro). After work I headed up to Greenpoint for dinner, but since Colin was nowhere to be found, Dave & I simply went over to his place watched his roommate play GoW on their ultra hawt 50 inch plasma screen. And holy shit did the game look good. Plus it appeared to be just as thrilling as when I first saw it demoed a few months back (sorry, but that that CNN cam is still pretty much the coolest thing ever). Eventually Colin was in town, so Dave and I met him and a lady friend of his (whose name escapes me right now I’m afraid) and we just sat around during dinner talking about… what else? Insert Credit forum drama/gossip/bullshit. Then we went back to Dave’s and were introduced to Dave’s pet bird, which is a parakeet/parrot hybrid which sorta freaked me out at first (well it did fly right at my face, all screaming, plus I was kinda drunk… like O’Connor says, one beer for me is like 1000 for you white people) but eventually everything was chill and I really enjoyed it when it just hung out on my shoulder.

So to summarize the past few days: saw “how the other side lives” this past weekend, got sorta threatened, but not really, by some internet watchdog group, checked out Gears of War, and got freaked out slightly by some tropical bird. Plus some other stuff happened that as said before I can’t get into at the moment, though I will say that one particular component has to deal with my trip to Japan next spring!

There’s also been a TON of stuff going on, video game wise. The PS3 comes out next week! And the Wii shortly afterwards, and people are totally going apeshit, plus there plenty of other things to talk about and that I just haven’t had the chance to touch upon, but it’ll have to wait till next time, maybe later tonight, after movie night, which will be my first in two months. I believe tonight is Superman 1 in HD; I had a chance to check out a screening of the new director’s cut of Superman 2, with Richard Donner in attendance, but I just couldn’t swing it schedule-wise.
