As if I didn’t have reason enough to be pissed at my old job, I have yet another one.

Another Fine Morning In The Big Apple

When I first joined the company, I went through the regular old routine of signing tax forms, which I absolutely loathe doing since I find them so confusing, no matter how “simple” they are, or regardless of how many times I fill them out, so I ended up making a mistake. This was brought to my attention by the accountant a few weeks later, who of course totally flipped her lid, but that was her way since she even described herself as the overly protective Jewish mother type. Basically, the way I had it, not much tax was being taken out from each paycheck, so I’d have to pay everything by the end of the year, which would have been a lot. So she suggested I have thing changed for that point. As for the taxes I had already “passed” on, well, I guess I would have to deal with when the time comes, but since I had been there for less then a month, it wasn’t a crazy amount (relatively speaking… at the time that is), and I’d deal with it when the time game. Again, this was my personal tax issue, and had nothing to do with the company.

So when I get my final paycheck today, what do I discover? That much of my money has been wiped out due to the taxes. Why? Because my boss decided to contact the IRS or whomever and have that which should have been paid beforehand taken out. I find this outrageous since it has nothing to do with his company, and therefore none of his business how my personal financial matters are handled.

But then again, maybe this isn’t what happened and I was simply shortchanged on my final paycheck, which at this point would not be a surprise. I did say beforehand that I was going to save the whole story of what happened for my upcoming TGQ piece, but I’m also tempted to share my, as Mike calls it, 30 second/elevator ride version of events since I’m still so pissed about it all.

Immediately afterwards I got into another mess over at J&R. For those who don’t know, J&R is this huge electronics “super-store” in the city that many New Yorkers swear by. Why? Because many New Yorkers don’t know anything better. Everything there is a fucking rip-off, and the salespeople are pretty much con artists who don’t know shit and will basically bold-face lie to you to get a sale. Anyway, last week I bought a SD card reader for my Mac that, for whatever reason, wouldn’t work. I tried returning it last week, but at the time I faced an hour long wait, mainly because the folks at the customer service window are slow as shit because they hate their jobs, as well as their lives, and have zero incentive to do much of anything, at the very least their jobs. So I returned this morning, after picking up my check, and was happy to see no one else there. So I went to the window, gave them the borked SD card reader, and expected to get my paltry $10 back. Yes? No. Instead, I got a pink slip and was told to just go to where I got the item and I would get my money back, easy as that.

So I head on over to where I got the card reader, which was the third floor of that particular building (J&R occupies several buildings all on one city block). After waiting at the register for three retards who each couldn’t find their fucking credit card when it came time to actually pay (kinda like those morons who wait in line at McDonald’s for fifteen minutes, and then they finally get up to order, they still don’t know what they want), I was told by the glassy-eyed woman that I needed a manager’s signature to get a refund. And of course, there’s no around. I then walk around the department looking for someone, anyone, eventually stumbling across three employees huddled in a corner. I ask where I can find the manager and am told that theirs went out to lunch (note: at the moment its 10:55 am, hardly lunch time), but I could go upstairs to the 4th floor and find one there.

I then go up to the fourth floor and ask the girl at the register there for the manager and am pointed towards some fat guy eating a huge cinnamon bun. I approach this tub of lard and ask “Please sign this so I can get my lousy $10 and get the hell out of here.” He gets all pissy and asks why the refund department (where I was originally) didn’t sign the slip, to which I respond “I don’t know, but based on previous visits, don’t everyone here just pass the buck?” When he tells me that I have to go back, I tell him no and reiterate that if he could just please sign the damn piece of paper, we could both get on with our lives. He then signs it, but then CROSSES HIS NAME OUT and says “Well whether you like it or no, you’re coming with me downstairs because I have to verify this!” And then he starts to complain “… and I have to get out of my seat for your stupid $10!!!”. To that, I reply with “GEE, TOO FUCKING BAD YOU HAVE TO GET YOUR ASS OUT OF YOUR FUCKING SEAT.” To that, he throws the piece of paper back to me and says get the hell out. But I at least have a signature, right?

So I returned to the third floor, back to the glassy-eyed chick who sent me on the wild chase to begin with, and present her the signed receipt. But then I’m told that I can only get my money back at ANOTHER register on the first floor. I fucking storm downstairs, and of course, by now everyone’s at lunch (its what… 11:05 am by now?), so the only thing I can do is literally scream “WHERE THE FUCK IS A MANAGER?!?!?!?” as loud as anyone can hear me. As you can tell, by now I’ve totally lost it. I just want my measly $10, what is so difficult about that? But it worked, because I was then directed to the head-hanco, who was apologetic about my ordeal, but in a rather condescending manner, such as how he directs yet another casheir to “give this young man some money”. The end.

Of course, what makes the whole situation so aggravating is that these douche-bags all have jobs and I don’t. And please, spare me the “its hard to be a salesperson” sob story, because I was one myself, in Times Square no less, so I know how hard, as well as easy it can be. Anyway… what did I do with my $10. Treated myself to lunch at Arby’s. And now my frequent diner card is all filled up, so the next meal is free!

Also this afternoon, when I stopped by the Virgin Megastore, I noticed Mad Maestro was in the discount bin for just $3. Still didn’t get it. But once it hits a dollar, its mine. And since we’re on the subject of video games…

Game News: There’s Plenty To Go Around, That’s For Sure

Oh, another reason why I’m in a pissy mood? The Game Developer’s Conference is going on and I’m not there to see Jeff Minter’s Space Giraffe in person.

Instead of being in beautiful San Fran (note: I’ve never been there, but I know people who have been or are from there, and not once have I ever heard anyone complain about the weather), I’m stuck here in NYC, in the freezing cold. My face is still red and sore from all the harsh winds from the day. Which is why once I got home, I stayed home, where its at least nice and warm…. though it would be nice to defrost at some job. But at least being unemployed has afforded me a chance to catch up on things that I’ve missed (between rounds of looking for work, or course). Again, I’ve been kinda late to the game on that end, no pun intended, so I’ll pass on mentioning and commenting on the big headlines (the PS3 keeps sucking, gee too bad, plus all I’ve also heard the tales about all the internal strife at Sony, but I also understand that things are settled with Immersion, which means maybe rumble might be coming back for their system, and Lord knows they need it… I personally can’t think of Metal Gear Solid 4 without it… I also know that Ouendan 2 is coming out for the Wii, which is great) and just stick to the small, maybe not everyone knows about kind of stuff….

- Like… and okay, this is kinda big news, but since it has to do with Tetsuya Mizuguchi, naturally I’m going to talk about it… Every Extend Extra Extreme for the Xbox Live Arcade. Though, more to the point, no Rez for XBLA. And I love how everyone got all hot and bothered over the idea of it, and when it came to pass that it didn’t happen, folks from Joystiq and Kotaku and others all acted like “yeah, we knew it could never happen.” Whatever. Actually, the possibility of Rez being ported to XBLA is not that far fetched if you think about. Virtually every company is looking to port whatever old game that might have an audience to the arena quick and easy like, and I don’t see why they wouldn’t hire Q Entertainment to handle the translation, and why they wouldn’t jump at the chance if an opportunity was presented. But anyway…

- Back to the GDC, here’s an article that expresses a concern what I myself, and others, have had as of late: is it becoming too big? As the article also points out, its great that the event has grown, to reflect and accommodate the growth of the industry and all those who are part of it, but given that there is also this need to fill the void of E3, as well as how “corporate” it’s become, you kinda get the feeling that people are crashing the party. I don’t want to name names, but I do know people who are attending that, to be totally honest, seem to have no reason to be there other than to be close to the action. Which I can understand, and maybe I’m just all sour grapes, but I see the GDC as something good, one of the few good things that the industry has going for it right now actually, and I’d rather not see it get spoiled by scenesters and money, tis all.

- One more item from Joystiq, and I’m only really passing it along for MK, since she’s into knitting: a crocheted Atari 2600.

- Now onto stuff as overheard at Kotaku… and I already know what you’re saying: why in the hell am I bothering with both Joystiq and Kotaku? Well, like I said, I’m just trying to catch up on stuff. Plus, since they’ve used me as a source of news, I guess I’m just returning the favor (note, I forget which site used to send me email asking “Hey dude, you haven’t posted an update in a while, and we kinda like the stuff that you write” accompanied by a smiley face… maybe because both sites are pretty much interchangeable), so anyway… first we have Yoot Saito, the creator or Odama, playing the game with the Wii-mote.

- Then there’s a look at the special team from Namco’s latest baseball game, with players based on famous Namco characters, with my definite have being the guy based on the road in Pole Position, which manages to surpass the Daytona car character in AM2′s Fighters Megamix in terms of meta-ness, at least from my POV.

- They also had two separate pieces about two different comic book folks, writer Mark Millar (whose work I am a fan of) and artist Ian Gibson, saying bad things about video games. Millar sez “games are for pedos” and Gibson sez “the PlayStation will never tell stories”.

Needless to say, both comments are kinda perplexing, but in fine Kotaku tradition, the response couldn’t be any more asinine. Especially with Gibson, with the response basically being “dur… the people who own the comic that he works on develops video-games, SO KNOW YOUR ROLE!!!” and advises him to not bite the hand that feeds him (so he can’t say anything bad about his bosses, especially when its not a direct attack against them but just the business they engage in?). What bullshit. How about his comment about how the comics market is “dying” because of video games?! Now that’s something worth dissecting.

- On a more positive video games + comic note, hey, Bone is coming to the DS!

- Robin gave me the head’s up on this one: what do you get when you mix arcade classics from the early 80′s with stop motion? You get this.

- I also found out from Robin originally about the new line of products from Japan that mixes Space Invaders with Hello Kitty?

- Here it is, the first screenshots from the Golden Compass game, based on the upcoming movie. And it looks like… bleh.

- Holy shit, Doom for Intellivision!!! Its even better than the Atari 2600 version! In more ways than one…

- I can’t believe Second Life keeps getting more and more “respect” as it goes on. When people began taking Second Life very seriously at first, it was kinda cute, and kinda gay, but now its ridiculous, and beyond gay into fucking retarded territory. For example, there’s now a group that wants to grant “political rights” to avatars. Its the Second Life Liberation Army. Truth be told, I would find this about a thousand times more awesome if this was for some other game, like Worlds of Warcraft, or anything else that wasn’t Second Life. And it pretty clear that all the folks that talk about how amazing it is, and how its the next step in interaction and commerce or whatever the hell else its described as on magazine covers have never actually played the damn thing. And neither have I to be honest, but I’m pretty sure that after about 2 hours of wrecking furries’ tea parties, I’d probably find the whole thing boring as fuck.

- Yet another guide for dudes on how to get their girlfriends to play video games with them. Thing that amazes me about such piece is that it just seem so fucking obvious! Like, do guys really need to be told “hey, be supportive of her and don’t get pissed if she doesn’t automatically pick up a game as fast as you’d like”?!?! Then again, the same could be said about 90% of all guides about women for me.

- Over at Select Button, someone posted this picture and I wondered what game the girl was playing. For some reason I though it was shmup, so I asked a few friends, and Robin came up with Guilty Gear XX. But still thinking it was a shump, I then showed it to Nullsleep, and aside from agreeing that it’s probably indeed Guilty Gear, he noted “The arcade cabinet looks like its modeled after a Sega Blast City, but with the name changed to Fighting City” and then showed me the following pic…

… of an arcade unit (a Blast City machine to be exact) that’s being powered by a Dreamcast!

- Nullsleep also wonder how, in a previous entry, I could mention Konami’s new loli-centric shump, Otomedius, and not mention Cave’s new title, which also feature girls, but fat ones, Muchi Muchi Pork.

- Staying on the topics of shumps for a bit, here’s something in “its about damn time” category: a piece that serves as a decent introduction to the scene for novices (trust me, I know how hard it can be to try and compile info on them) with links and recommendations. It’s a bit… incomplete, at least in my opinion, but at least it?s something.

- Meanwhile at Insert Credit, they recently posted an article that asks why video games does not have its own Citizen Kane. I guess? Sorry, but I have zero patience these days for New Games Journalism pieces where the bottomline is that the author no longer likes video games the way he used to and then pontificates as to what led to this, basically “what went wrong” and “where did the magic go”… I appreciate the intent, but its almost always delivered in such a smug manner that I can’t help roll my eyes.

But I think a more important question is why video games does not have its own Airplane. Or A Night At The Opera. Or This Is Spinal Tap. I ask because of this recent trailer for the new EA game, Battlefield: Bad Company. It tries to be funny…. but it isn’t, at least to me. But comedy is subjective. Not just among people and their comedic tastes, but the medium that it exists in. Maybe it is funny… for a video game. I’m curious to see what other might think about this.

- Though on a related note, video games at least might already have its Cannibal Holocaust… And now for something very special, courtesy of James, that crazy Sonic loving, furry hating Brit that makes everyone smile over at Select Button whose findings I’ve presented more than a few times before.

The other day he passed along this, a detailed rundown of the game Harvester, an old PC game from the mid 90s that has been called the most gruesome, violent, and sadistic games ever created. It?s also supposed to be really, REALLY bad.

For years I’ve been obsessed with this game, ever since first reading about in Next Generation magazine as a kid, but all my despite all my investigating, I haven’t been able to find any info on the game. So needless to say, I was more than a tiny bit ecstatic to finally get proof of the game’s existence, let along a complete walk-through, with pictures and videos, of this totally insane game.

So what makes Harvester so damn special? Well, its basically a crappy playing, as well as crappy looking, adventure game that features an inane plot, shitty acting, wretched combat… the works. Actions and events in the game including buying a dirty magazine for the creepy man of the law, bothering firemen as they make gay porn, scratching a car to impress occultists, getting into arguments with a child molester, engaging in the most un-erotic sex imaginable, setting fires, causing a woman to kill herself and her young daughter, and murdering janitors, clowns, old people, animated works of art… you even have to kill a drunken version of yourself! It even features kids cannibalizing their mother! WHAT ELSE DO I HAVE TO SAY?!?!?! if an insane David Lynch fan was t go pyscho and try and create a video game that was “inspired” by his idol to create a video game, this would be exhibit A when he’s on trial for stalking and being a menace. It’s just THAT good!

Btw, here’s a screenshot…

- James also passed this along: info on another pretty gruesome game, also the very last commercial game for the PC Engine (which did the whole Dreamcast thing of just hanging in there well after it was pronounced dead before the DC did it) called Dead of the Brain 1& 2. Not to be confused with Brain Powered 2, or something like that, which this bizarre action game that had Hitler’s brain involved (of course), also for the PC Engine, that was a fave of mine back in the day.

- Its been point out numerous times by numerous folks, but this YTMND does a good job of illustrating the point of how Nintendo seems determined to make cute, cuddly, and pink Kirby all hardcore and shit.

- Koreans are often accused of being obsessed with ass humor. Anything dealing with farting and shitting and the like. And this web game, aimed at kids, in which you have to pass wind undetected, by waiting for a loud vehicle to stop by, does little to help battle said stereotype.

- And speaking of Koreans…

- There’s nothing I like better then hearing reports from the foreign press about how lazy us Americans are, especially when it comes to something video game related. Like this report on some guy that didn’t want to go through the trouble of doing the grunt work to get some stupid achievement points for Xbox Live Arcade, so he built a machine to do the work (of once again, playing a video game) for him.

- So I guess I should probably comment on this, eh? And would be a surprise to anyone to hear me say that I think it looks fucking retched? Yeah, didn’t think so. Next…

- Here’s a nifty, and rather useful site, one that keeps track of all the ultra rare, collectable game related stuff that passes through eBay.

- Found this over at the Select Button forums, its the cover of some Euro gaming mag…

- Yet another item from the IC that I forgot to mention a while ago: a nice little piece that touches upon how the system wars were all about the bits. Apparently, the PS3 is only 128 bits? I also fondly recall having these long debates with the creepy dude I worked with at Burger King shortly after high school about the number of bits in the Atari 2600. He said it had to be 4 since it was less powerful and older than then NES, but I tried explaining to him that it just didn’t work that way. But hey, the guy did own a Saturn!

- Meanwhile, earlier today, there’s a brief write-up, fresh from the GDC about some DS game in which you play the perfect housewife. Interesting… I wonder if is something dudes who can’t get their girlfriends to play games should put on their shopping lists?

- Time to head over to the Gaming Age Forums and see what’s the talk over there (aside from all the usual nonsensical Sony/Nintenod/MS is DOOMED topics, of course). First is a thread about a series of totally absurd Super Mario comics

- Then you have some guy who confesses that he can’t stop thinking about Tetris, even during sex.

- Remember the Genesis guitar that I linked to a whiles back? Well check out this Famicom guitar!

The details behind the making of are here, which even includes a vid of the thing in action. Meanwhile, someone at the GAF posted these in response…

- Another gem that us American gamers never enjoyed originally has finally gotten a fan translation! And this time its Pulseman for the Mega Drive (Genesis)! Its seriously one of the system’s most criminally underrated game, and definitely worth the download.

- Speaking of fan-translations, perhaps you too have wondered, hey, what’s the deal with Mother 3? Well, its thankfully alive and well. And on that note…

The Obligatory YouTube Section Of This Journal Entry (Part One: Video Games)

- Here’s a commercial for a Japanese N64 fishing game by the father of Mother, Shigesato Itoi.

- And here’s the trailer to the next Phoenix Wright game in development, which will be the first true DS game (everything up till this point has just been the original GBA games plus enhancements). The 3D crime scene viewer looks particularly hot.

- Courtesy of Select Button’s Mister Toups, a vid of some guy playing a Power Pad game (Remember those? That running pad for the NES, which was a precursor to the DDR pads, and was primarily used for track & field-type games?) while eating a sausage. Yeah, I don’t know why either.

- Another neat little thing that Robin gave me the head’s up on: a very video game-y music video for DJ Shadow.

- As pointed out by the folks at the GAF, check out this home made Punch Out movie made circa 1987!

- On a similar note, while it may not be as cool as the one where they’re on the beach, lighting their hands on fire, but this bit of KOF cosplay and play fighting is pretty entertaining.

- Hey, take a look: a bunch of death scenes from Resident Evil 4. Also, a bunch of death scenes from Manhunt. What’s the preferred method of death? Plastic or getting one’s head chain-sawed off?

- Some of you may have heard of it over at the IC, its the spirtual successor to Princess Crown: here’s the official trailer to Odin Sphere. Much like Princess Crown before it, the animation is totally nuts.

The Internet Is Good To Me (And For You)

As for other non-game related crap that’s made the internet particuarly awesome as of late…

- Robin also passed this along (remember, he’s a correspondent for this site!) a whiles ago and I haven’t really had the chance to mention it till now: remember that Soundwave that actually plays music? Well here comes Rumble and Frenzy, but instead of being tapes (the new Soundwave plays music for SD cards), they’re now headphones, and they actually work!

- And Katie also showed me this recently: some comic about how a girl dealing with her unwanted body hair, with the most interesting comment being how Korean guys adore public hear. And speaking as a half Korean, let’s just say that I’m…. very Americanized.

- Yo, its rap cat! And I’m only mentioning this because A) Checkers serves some damn good, and dirt cheap burgers, that I always look forward to munching on when I’m in Jersey with MK by the shore, and B) you wouldn’t believe how happy I am that Burger King has officially opened the door for shitty fast food mascots once again.

- Yet another YTMND, one that’s absolutely NSFW, but which I found too funny not to pass along. Its tre romantic!

- I forget who it is that I know that hates those cavemen Geico commercials. Well for that person… I’ve got bad news.

- And now that I have the time, I’m seriously thinking of becoming a penn pal with a prisoner.

The Obligatory YouTube Section Of This Journal Entry (Part Two: Other Stuff)

- Ever wanted to hear some Eminem wannabe diss Harry Potter? Your wish as finally been granted.

- I hear that the best show on G4 at the moment is some ultimate physical challenge show, which has been repackaged as Ninja Warrior (I have to wonder if its at all drastic like how Takeshi’s Castle became Most Extreme Elimination Challenge). Well here’s a clip of show as it originally appears.

- On a related note, its kinda been a while since I’ve posted a Hard Gay clip.

- Meet Geoffrey Leonard: Australian. Author. Dog owner. Child molester.. Also, totally nuts!

- Finally, Bjork + some braindance artist + stop motion animation starring a little bear made out of felt that likes the travel in space = LOVE

“WHAT?!?!?!”

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

It’s been a little over a week since my last update, so time again to pull out those overused words: man, what a crazy past couple of days. So what’s been going exactly? Well….

Lots of stuff really. One obvious highlight was the 2nd New York Comic Con that took place last weekend. Most might recall me (and many others) bitching about the clusterfuck that was the first attempt at brining a small slice of the San Diego Comic Con to the Big Apple. Well this second try was a total 180; it was a really great show! As far as mainstream comic shows go, of course. It was no MoCCA, but it was still miles ahead of, say, the crappy church comic shows us New Yorkers have been forced to deal with for years now. And there was issues to be sure, but given that this was year two, there’s still time to work things out, and all things considered, it very promising event, and further proof positive that mainstream comics still has some life in it.

The Obligatory/Belated New York Comic Con Report

I was pleasantly surprised by how San Diego-esque the show was, since most folks, myself included felt it would be a total impossibility. Granted there were obvious differences: its still much smaller than the grand daddy of all comic cons, and Hollywood didn’t have as much of a presence, but given that its not a stone’s throw away like San Diego is, that’s hardly a surprise. Plus, one of the best parts of the San Diego con was sorely missed, Seaport Village, which is this wonderful little waterfront villa that’s right next to the convention center that has tons of awesome food. Meanwhile, at the Jacob Javits center, there ain’t shit to eat for blocks around, so you either pay $5 for a chicken sandwich at the show or you starve. And once again, those rude ass fuck teamsters were in there, but that was to be expected, and this time around, with things being organized a billion times better than before, they had little chance to abuse their authority.

One smart move was to have the show be three days, with the first being a primarily industry only day (which I missed out on due to…. more on that later). So by Saturday, all the important folk had done their business, leaving just nerds to fill up the space. And they sure came out in droves once again. Here’s the scene outside Saturday morning…

It was just as freezing cold outside this year as it was last, but things moved along much better this time around, or as far as I could tell, so no one was stuck outside for long (previously, some had to stand outside for like three hours).

And inside, the place was bustling with comic folks, with everyone in generally good spirits (again, a contrast to the year prior where everyone was pissed and stressed out). Naturally, lots of said folks came out in full regalia….

I also ran into last year’s breakout star early on, Unemployed Skeletor. Not only is the dude still jobless, but you really can’t tell from the pic, but I think even fatter than last year…

The big primary presence was, of course, Marvel and DC. I didn’t bother to take any pics of their set-up, though I kinda wish I did take at least one featuring Iron Man. As anyone who knows me is well aware of, I am a MAJOR fan of old Shell Head (that’s what the hip kids call him), and I couldn’t be any happier that he’s become a major focus in the Marvel Universe these days, though I also get the impression that everyone just plain hates the guy (and not because he’s some asshole in the storyline, in which he’s heading the charge to have all super heroes in the US register their identities to the government, with all the political and social implications that one would expect, but because he’s everywhere and no one liked him in the first place). There were smaller publishers on-hand, but not that many; correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t recall ever seeing a table for Top Shelf for example (either that or they got lost in the sea of the major publishers and toys). Once again, not much of a surprise since I know it was the independent guys that really got fucked over last time, which is why most people I know had no interested in attending this year’s event.

So without many of the indie guys and Hollywood on hand, the space was primarily filled with folks peddling anime and manga, as well as toys. There were a ton of awesome designer toys on-hand, including these robots from FLCL…

And here’s some more from the same booth….

There was also a lot of bizarro shit, stuff that folks were trying to get investment for, like this line of toys that is based upon, well, shit…

One booth had all these dolls dressed up as various characters from comics and movies, and given how everyone also knows that I’m obsessed with the Hermione character from Harry Potter (well more so the actress, but anyway), I simply had to take a picture…

… It was hard to take since there was another creepy photographer that kept getting in the shot.

Another booth that peddled Lego-esque little dudes had famous movie posters adorning featuring their characters, and they were… interesting….

Back to people in costumes! Here I am with Soundwave, and given my love for the character, and how kick-ass the costume was, I simply had to have a pic with me in it…

Though what truly blew my mind was when I discovered that it was a GIRL in that outfit!

Here’s a guy who totally nailed the elder statesmen Superman from Kingdom Come look….

And here’s the Flash and the Blue Beetle…

Some girl as Jean Grey/Marvel Girl/Phoenix…

Captain America ordering a hot dog…

Aside from super heroes, you had plenty of Star Wars folks roaming around, mostly Jedis, a few Stormtroopers (including one cute female one, and one… not so hot), and a fat Boba Fett. Check out this pic featuring a girl with huge breasts doing Slave Leia. They aren’t that huge, just for that character/outfit. So much so that even MK insisted that I take a picture.

For the most part, they hung out at this stage area where every lightsabered each other to music to either Star Wars Episode 1 or the Matrix.

But at one point, they ran some comedy, and aside from some stand up comic trying his best to make fun of Doctor Who fans to get a laugh out of Star Trek fans, here’s some fat dude dressed up as Batman eating a bat (actually, a hoagie, but it was supposed to be a bat in the sketch)…

Here’s a booth babe (I think I should probably withhold her real name) that was passing out postcards to comics based on old Grimm’s fairy tales, “but all messed up!!!”, whom I ended up chatting with. I asked how it compared to working at car shows and the like, and she said that nerds were far nicer and well behaved (whereas at car shows, every asshole is trying to grab her ass). When I asked if this was her primary gig, she said no, it was something she was doing on the side. And when I asked if it was for the money or just the fun of it, I was told that it was most definitely was for the former; her house is getting foreclosed and she needs the cash, bad. Yikes.

At one point on Saturday, I hooked up with Joe (Simko) who was on-hand to have a meeting with the designer toy folks to talk about the upcoming line that’s based on his characters, and with some time to kill, us and June decided to check out the You Want To Be A Superhero auditions that was taking place (its some reality show on NBC I think). And here I am with some super hero hopeful… I forget his name, but he was super friendly, and his power had something to do with electricity…

And here I am with some girl whose gimmick was that she was on rollerblades, but wasn’t very good with them and was in constant need of staying up.

The one dude that had all the buzz is the guy on the right, who apparently made it all the way to the very end of the first season but lost, and many seemed to feel that he should have been the chosen one. In this pic, he was just chatting as a guy dressed up as Dante from Devil May Cry (he wasn’t trying out, but just wanted to say hi to the hero guy).

Oh, and here’s a blurry pic of me with a ninja turtle. He was super popular, with everyone wanting to have their picture taken with him, but I did manage to tell Leonardo that he was my favorite turtle…

I lied. My favorite is Donattello.

There weren’t just folks in funny outfits. As previously mentioned, last year’s show was so bad that it scared off quite a few comic producing friends, though a few decided to take their chances and set up shop. Here’s Dave (Roman) and John over at the Comics Bakery table, their new imprint, which also includes Raina and Marion, over at the artist alley.

There a few indie folks sprinkled across the main floor as well, including the Comic Alliance, which is SVA’s imprint (again, its nice that cartooning is so celebrated at my alma mattar… wish it was the same when I was going there, but oh well). That’s where I found Joe (Flood) with Hilary

Like I said, the animu was strong at the show. Here’s the cover of a new manga starring Avril Lavigne…

And these posters were pretty popular freebies amongst pervs…

Then there was this guy

I’m disappointed that this pic didn’t come out so well since the chicken girl in the back was really neat….

I’m a big Range Murata fan, but it?s kinda hard to really advertise this fact when the guy has such a strong loli following, thanks to stuff like this…

That same booth had some really neat figures from Japan, including this Optimus Prime that Jason had given me the head’s up on earlier in the week…

And here’s some others by the same company…

Plus here’s some mecha from Capcom’s new Xbox 360 hit, Lost Planet…

Speaking of video games, they too had a presence at the show. Konami had perhaps the biggest booth… here’s the set-up for Lost in Blue 2. I barely touched the first one, whereas MK almost beat the game, so I’ll have the get sequel for her…

As I was sneaking in this show of this old guy, just standing there and watching some kids play DDR, all confused like…

… this guy snuck up from behind…

… and said “Hey, I know see you all the time!” He then went on to say that he keeps running into to me at various local game related functions, like DigitalLife, and has even seen me at ICON. Oh to be a staple of the NYC game scene….

I also got to play Monster Madness for the 360, which I was originally going to pass on, but MK insisted since there was a chance to score a free 360, plus she’s all about games where you can beat each other up, plus the motif (kids running around beating up zombies and monsters, and other kids) was right up her alley. And we even got Joe and June to play, even though they don’t do video games, and both were also drunk at the time (this was Sunday, the last day, and they wanted to get a leg up on the festivities later that evening, which I’ll go into a bit later). Anyway, the game was pretty neat. Decent multiplayer action. Was kinda hard to see what was going on, though that can be overcome in time. Overall, good for what it was.

Aside from walking the isles and checking out books, plus people dressed up as folks from said books, there were also panels at the show, and I managed to check out a few. MK and I caught the Minx panel Saturday morning, which was mostly about the first book from the new young female focused imprint, The Plane Janes, Both talents behind the book, Cecil Castelucci and Jim Rugg were on-hand to talk about the project and show some art, and that was cool. Also got to chat with Jim beforehand, which was nice. They even had special pre-release copies of the book on-hand, which was quite the score. And they also previwed the other books in the line-up that’s coming out, with Good As Lily, the new Derek Kirk Kim/Jesse Hamm collaboration that looks to be damn good. A great panel, though I wish someone had brought up how lame the name is for an imprint that geared towards girls. I guess Pussy Reads was taken?

Another highlight was the humor in comics panel, which was supposed to have a bunch of folks, including Michael Kupperman and Bob Fingerman, but in the end it was just Kyle Baker (hey, cartoonists tend to sleep in on Saturday morning when they can help it), but it was all good since he’s such a great speaker. He mostly touched up how overly sensitive television producers are these days, as well as the overall sad state of animation these days. Kyle was full of great anecdotes, like the time he was working on some project about Noah’s Ark and how he kept getting story notes from executives asking such inane shit like “Why does God have to be so mean?” He also discussed how the era of classic slapstick cartoon violence is more or less dead, because everyone is so hung up on crap like character motivation and the such (as well as directing jabs at folks who blindly follow the advice of Robert McKee, whom many consider to be a God when it comes to the proper way to write a story, while also conveniently overlooking the fact that the guy hasn’t written shit himself). A lot of people compare Kyle with John Kricfalusi, and aside from having very similar art styles, their attitudes towards animation are practically identical; I still remember reading about all the dumb story notes that John K had to endure when working on Ren & Stimpy (and Kyle also has little love for Nickelodeon as well). Much like Kricfalusi, I don’t agree with everything that Baker had to say, but I always appreciate anyone that laments how no one trusts their instincts anymore these days, and the insistence to service bullshit demographics, as well as standards and practices, especially after the Friday I just had…. again, more on that later.

Michael Kupperman did in the end show up, but for a panel the very next day, for Nick Mag. It was mostly for kids, so it mostly bits involving a number of the magazine’s comics and their creators; one involved two of human cartoonists facing off against a computer cartoonist, Big Orange, to see what was funnier, man or machine, but it ended being more of a corporate shill and a shit talker than anything else. Though the best part had to be the special Kupperman strip all done in 3-D (and everyone even got those old timey glasses). Anyway, here’s a pic of Dave with Big Orange…

Though the best panel of the entire weekend, as well as the true high point of the entire show, was the Venture Brothers panel. MK & I both knew well in advance that if there was just one thing he absolutely had to check out, that would be it. And boy, it did not disappoint. The room was totally packed with VB loyalists, which in itself was pretty awesome, and the energy level was simply electric. Pretty much all the primary talents behind the show were in attendance, and they all seemed like dudes you totally want to hang out with (especially James Urbaniak, the guy who does the voice of Dr. Venture). The audience had tons of questions, and all of them were really good; no retards in the audience, at least for Venture Brothers! I’m really glad the first person asked them what its like to have, when compared to all the other Adult Swim offerings, a coherent plot, actual characters, jokes that makes sense, and the like. Then you had the little kid that asked if there was actually a testicular torsion board (referencing the ball twisting episode). I guess the best part was finding out that the guys behind what in my humble opinion is the best damn cartoon being produced today is that they hate all the things I hate! Like Family Guy and a host of other crap, much of which is also on Adult Swim. At one point they even started to take random things, like coffee cups and toe nails, gave them “funny” accessories like hats and mustaches, and created a whole new seasons worth of shows for the network.

Also, check out this girl with the boss Venture Brothers tat…

As for what books I got, not too many really. Was watching my money that weekend, though I did take advantage of the special they had going over at First Second. Got Garage Band, A.L.I.E.E.N. (I can’t find any info on the book online, but I did find this little web game), and Klezmer, all for just $20!

A few final, random pics. First another robot shot, but this one’s cardboard, and it even moves! From some Brooklyn based DIY booth…

Next, some more of those designer USB drives that a few might have seen here and there, this time featuring Gloomy Bear and a few Star Wars characters…

Here’s some guy dressed up as a banana….

Steve Flack bought this issue of the Flash, with him getting assaulted by hippies….

And what’s comic con without celebrities? Here’s Steve sporting his autographed picture of Gary Coleman, along with his camera that’s showing a picture of him with Gary Coleman (yeah, I know, how meta). Though what’s most impressive is Steve’s Brocktoon hooded sweatshirt, which I’m actually more jealous of than his Tron one.

Plus, here’s a picture of June with Gary, which as you can see, is very color coordinated. And June’s wearing a shirt featuring that well know, at least around the web, picture of Gary and David Hasselhoff with KITT. Now that’s meta….

So I guess that was the show, at least for me. All things considered, it was a pretty decent affair, and I dare say worth the price of admission! They certainly made up for past mistakes, so if the show’s organizers are able to make a few changes (like the artist alley, which was too cramped, or simply have more panels), then next year’s will be even better.

Nice Hitler

Last weekend was a pretty social one, and not just due to the comic con. Job had his somewhat belated house-warming party and aside from plenty of Polish candy and Japanese wine, I got to test out Wario Ware for the Wii, which I hadn’t done since some press function many moons ago. There was about 10 people playing together, and while it definitely lacked the lighting pace of the original game mode, it was still lots of fun, and hey, 10 people were playing the same game together!

Beforehand we all got the chance to make Miis of ourselves, which was half the fun. I was really surprised that I was able to create one that looked just like me. Also got the chance to check out all the other Miis that Job had, many of which were sent by friends and family. He had a decent looking Michael Jackson, as well as Hitler. There was one that looked just like Divine, so I asked…

“Who’s that one that looks like Divine?”

“Its actually Divine.”

Though the real crazy thing about Job and his girlfriend Michele is that they have a cat that apparently not only plays Dr Mario, but is good at it. Good enough to easily beat human opponents, which I just had to see for myself. There was a NES with the game running in the guest room the whole time, but he/she was so spooked out by so many visitors that I never got the chance to issue a challenge.

Then the next night, Sunday evening, was Joe’s yearly Oscar bash, affectionately titled DEATH TO THE OSCARS. And like every year before, Joe and I were both pretty drunk well before the damn thing actually started. As for show itself, it sucked, but that was to be expected. Though Ellen Degeneres was actually more annoying that expected (her rambling comedic style is not that cute to begin with, but was down right insulting when she got to blow minutes trying to yuck it up with celebs in the audience, using valuable times stolen by those that could actually use them, such as those giving speeches when receiving awards for their life’s work). Then you had the Cirque de Soli bullshit act, which was creepy at first, but just got sloppier as the night went on. And when they accidentally referred to Infernal Affairs at Japanese and not Hong Kong, needless to say, I was more than irked. But at least I discovered that tequila and apple juice makes for a killer combo.

Lesson Of The Week: Hacking Ain’t Easy

As for this past week, I’ve actually been keeping a pretty low profile. Didn’t do much work… for reasons that I will be getting into in just a bit. On Tuesday I met up with Dave (Mauro) and got back my PSP that he had been working on. He managed to hack it, though it wasn’t easy. My system apparently has the “dreaded” TA-082 motherboard that was only recently hacked, and during the installation process the screen went crazy. But things are relatively working fine, though its not quite fine; my screen changes brightness whenever trying to run an emulator, Genesis games seem to experience slowdown almost randomly, plus it takes forever for PSone games to load. Also, Dave never did get either Vib Ribbon or Love Love 2/Love Love Truck to work, which is a real bummer. But at least I have the Parodius and Twin Bee collections on my system, as well as Pro Gear, assorted PSone shumps, and a PC Engine emulator, among other things.

Plus I’ve also encountered some weirdness with a stock UMD, though for the most part, I’ve just been playing Lumines, so maybe my copy is wonked? Sometimes when my session ends, instead of saving my progress, it asks to load my profile once again, which would wipe out the progress that I just made (this has already has cost me one skin thus far). Plus once while trying to get to the home menu from Lumines, the system flat out crashed. But otherwise…. dear God, well worth just having the system for. I may have to take back what I’ve said before and crown Lumines as better overall than Meteos. Believe it or not, it took me next to no time to get into Meteos, which for most has a very steep learning curve, while it took me a while for things to click with Lumines, But when it did, which was late Thursday night….. I was up till literally four in the morning playing the Shake Your Body skin over, and over, and over again.

Also, now that I finally have updated firmware, I’ve been able to try out all of my games, including Ultimate Ghouls in Ghosts, which I already like more than any other game before it in the series, simply due to the energy bar, but man does the jumping fucking suck. I’ve also tried giving Katamari 3 another shot, and I just can’t get over how atrocious the controls are.

At least the PSP has finally shaped up for me… too bad I can’t say things are going that well when it comes to my efforts to haxor my GBA. As I may have previously mentioned, Dave passed along a M3 cart to me to mess around with, but I really haven’t been able to do much with it. My primary problem is that the particular card I have, which is the M3 Mini SD Pro, cannot run GBA games above 4 megs, which is pretty meager. But also, and this is hardly a surprise, not having a PC my biggest issue. I was hoping to simply drag and drop roms onto the SD card, but aside from the fact that for whatever reason, my Mac would not recognize the card, nor the SD reader I recently acquired (even though it was supposed to be OS X compatible, and I have delt with SD cards on the Mac before), apparently you need the M3 software to treat the roms, which creates save files for each game.

What I want is the following…

- A Flash cart that will play GBA games, regardless of size.

- One that will also be flushed with the system.

- And one that I can manage via OS X.

I know there’s another M3 card, the SD Perfect, that allows for larger sized GBA roms, but it appears to be slightly bigger than the system, and I don’t want something sticking out the bottom of my GB Micro. EDIT: Actually, there’s the Mini SD Perfect that’s the perfect size I’m looking for! Though I still have the issue of incompatible authoring software. My Mac is neither Intel based (I just have modest little G4), nor do I have Virtual PC (and yes, I really don’t know how I can live with the fact that I can’t play the billions of awesome doujin softs out there, much of which I write about all the time). My only alternative is a Flash2Advance cart that Jeremiah turned me onto, which has OS X drivers, but they seem to be impossible to find these days. Damn.

On a non-game related note, Wednesday was MK’s birthday. We had dinner at Zen Palette, and then it was off to movie night. The feature was In Cold Blood, the movie based on the Truman Capote book, and it was pretty damn good, as well as drop dead gorgeous in HD. Also, some of the finest editing I’ve ever seen.

Otherwise, I’ve just been meeting up with and hanging out with folks whom I haven’t had much of chance to see in recent weeks. Earlier this evening was spent with Mike, who was kind enough to treat me to beef and booze (good thing for him I’m such a cheap date). The main topic of conversation with him, and most everyone else this past week? Well…

In The End

So I guess the really big news, which is from last Friday, is that I was fired from Black Hammer Productions. I am no longer their game designer. The reason? There’s many. Let’s just say that things just didn’t work out. I simply was not a fit for the company, nor was the company a fit for me.

There’s a lot I could say, and I’ve been debating all week what, if anything, I would comment on. But for the time being, I am going to choose to hold my tongue, though not for the regular reasons.

I will say that the past couple of days have been pretty rough for me. Hey, its never pleasant to get fired from any job, but this recent development was a real blow due to the timing and the circumstances involved. But all I can say is that I tried my very best with what I had, so maybe its for the best that I now look elsewhere, and torwards the future. These next couple of weeks are going to be difficult, but at least I have some of the finest friends one could ever be lucky enough to have. To those of you that have come to my side this past week and offered support, I sincerely appreciate it, I truly do.

Aside from being depressed by how everything played out, as well as being embarrassed (its been no fun telling said friends who were so happy for me about my new job that I just lost it only one month later), I’m also quite pissed off to be totally honest. So as far as what happened, I will tell the story because I honestly feel it needs to be told. At least certain aspects to it. Not just now, and not here. If anything, its somewhat a blessing in disguise since I now have the perfect ending to the piece I’ve been planning for The Gamer’s Quarter. So look for it Shaper!

At least this entire week hasn’t been all doom and gloom. The thing is, I had actually been building up a good deal of momentum over the past couple of months, much of which my tenure at Black Hammer put the kibosh on (for example, the recent dearth in updates), so its going to be tricky to get back on that horse. But I am looking forward to doing more writing, and back to updating on a more frequent basis.

Besides, I have 18,000 new visitors as of this week (Sup everybody!), thanks to an old blog post of mine getting Digged; my old i am 8 bit report, which keeps bring people to this place, even years after the fact. Granted most of those folks have come and gone, but for the six of you that have decided to stick around, welcome! I hope you enjoy your stay, and don’t forget to visit the forums (which I can finally spend some time on).

I also still have other stuff going on elsewhere. Nick Mag recently ran a piece by me, and I even got some fan mail. Its always extra nice when some nine year old takes time out of his or her busy schedule to pass along a few kind words! Unfortunately the poor kid thought me listing Dr. Robotnik and Eggman as the same person was a mistake (see what you’ve done Sega?). Anyway, its on newsstands right now.

Plus, my GSW column is back in effect, and for those who might have missed it, last week I reviewed Avalon. And this time, I finally hope to get around to doing some video game comic reviews sometime soon.

And of course, there’s my appearance at ICON later this month.

Finally….

Guess Who’s Back?

Jizzmoppa, that’s who! Yup, after a way too long an absence, my first web game, and I guess my most popular game period, has finally returned, thanks to the wonder if porn based ads. And finally, all is well in the world.

Last night was Demo Night V. Once again, for the fifth time to be exact, the New York and New Jersey chapters of the IGDA brought together various local talents to show off their latest projects. As the official IGDA NY reporter, I was on-hand to take note of what went down, but since this isn’t the official IGDA NY site, I’ll simply pass along an abridged account….

Demo Night 5

There were five games featured in all. The first was Catz for the DS, by Powerhead Games. Yeah, Catz, the virtual pet simulator that kinda shamelessly rips off Nintendogs, but at least they know it (and it is true that Catz, and all the other “Petz” games predate Nintendogs by quite some years). The presentation was given by Jason Schreiber, the game?s executive producer and CEO of Powerhead, who as expected, gave another entertaining speech. This one was highlighted by his love (and shameless pimping) of photography, which he managed to incorporate into the game; you get to take pictures of your kitten, often with cutsey hats on! The mission statement of the game? “Its all about the kittens”.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the game was how research revealed that cats purring share a common frequency range of 25-150 hertz, which they recreated for the game, and in the end, its apparently like the real thing! Plus it makes the DS vibrate, even without a rumble pack! They also got Nada Surf to do some wacky end theme song called Meow Meow Lullaby Remix which was pretty neat.

Second up was Out of Your Mind, the latest game from Gamelab. Actually, its a Gamelab/Curious Pictures co-production; when the partnership was first announced how many months back, many wondered what would be the result. Well, it?s Out of Your Mind. Basically, Gamelab’s patented super-excellent game design, together with Curious’ always exemplarily animation and presentation skills. As for the game itself, its kinda hard to explain. The set-up is that one uses “mental floss” to rid stuff plaguing the brain. The mechanics is somewhat similar to one of Gamelab’s first games Loop (which is still one of my fave web games to this day), but instead of using the strip to just lasso the enemy, you use it to impale them.

I’ll be totally honest; when I first saw the game running, I nearly shit my pants since it kinda resembled Spready Bear, but it was soon clear that it wasn’t. And thank fucking God. Mind you, I guess part of the paranoia stems from Diner Dash being somewhat similar to Jizzmoppa (and that’s not my saying it but a number of others that have noticed the similarity). Anyway, it looks awesome and lots of fun. Basically, another home run for Gamelab.

Third up was Snapshot Adventure: Secret of Bird Island by Large Animal. The premise is super simple: bird watching and picture taking. You’re presented with a scene with various birds flying about and you have to take pictures of them. Points awarded are based upon how good the pictures are, such as the angle and the composition and even the action. You also get to find out info regarding the birds you encounter, and can even create your own (which can be uploaded to a server, then other folks can download then take pictures of it, and then you can find out how many people have taken snapshots of your creation). And that’s it. Yet it looked hella fun.

Of all the games, it was easily my favorite; Out of Your Mind was ace, don’t get me wrong, but the premise, presentation and core mechanic of Snapshot Adventure is simply top-notch, across the board… the music especially was incredible.

Fourth was Ghost Warrior by Templar Studios, based on some film by 20th Century Fox that just keeps getting pushed back again and again. Templar seems to have a knack for creating decent adver-games based on shitty films (they did the Lords of War game a while back that was decent for what it was). This one is a kinda Diablo clone in which you run around, as a long Native American warrior avenging the death of everyone he knows (when Peter Mack, the President of Templar and the guy playing the game encountered yet another dead person tied to a tree, he mentioned “I don’t know if you can tell, but that’s my mom”), and take down Viking thugs. The highlight of the demo was seeing Mack constantly run away from danger, which you apparently do a lot in the game. As he sez: “By the way, this game is very hard.” Also mentioned was how… and pay special attention members of Select Button…. its a very “lonely” game, since the people you meet are either dead or want you dead.

The final game was a Reno 911 paintball game that even the presenter, Kris Schlacter, admitted wasn’t anything special. The whole point of the presentation though was discuss about the web browser based 3D engine he created for the game that is rather nifty, primarily the rather long and messy developmental process. Unfortunately, his MacBook freaked out and he wasn’t able to project the game for the audience, which severely hindered his talk (and Kris was already super nervous about speaking to begin with). But in the end, Kris, who is like one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met btw, was able to get his points across and got a nice big warm round of applause. Also, for whatever reason, his MacBook after the presentation all of a sudden decided to be agreeable and was able to show the game on the big screen, albeit when everyone was busy drinking beer and “networking”.

Oh, and to answer a question that I was asked about a hundred time earlier this evening, no I am not going to the Game Developers Conference this year. Unfortunately…

The other highlight of yesterday was that Chulip finally fucking arrived. And of course, the kissing RPG that I’ve been wanting literally for years is now sitting right next to me, still in its shrink-wrap, as I type. But I do intend on giving it a spin later this week. I hope….

Out of the Handheld Gaming Ghetto

Plus I found out from Dave (Mauro) that he was able to successfully hack my PSP! The night before I stopped by his place, along with Joe (Salina) and his girlfriend Gloria, as brought along as my PSP for Dave to work his magic, but things didn’t go as planned, forcing him to hold on the thing. Apparently I have the “dreaded” TA-082 motherboard that I’m guessing was the source of the problems. Also, both Love Love 2 and Vib Ribbon were not working properly last I checked… which sucks. But Rival Schools 2 (the precursor to Project Justice) and Slap Happy Rhythm Buster (Japanese fighter fused with DDR) works, as well as emulators. I’m primarily interested in having it run Genesis games so my PSP can become some spiritual successor to the Nomad that I once had (which Dave hadn’t even heard of!).

BTW, regarding Love Love 2… you know, the mine-cart riding, sandwich making, dating simulator… its actual name is apparently Love Love Truck! See, Dave can read Japanese. Anyway, I’m no surprised, since that what the crazy CD-R/warez company from Hong Kong which is where the game originated from was never that great with either English or Japanese. And no… I haven’t had a chance to install a PSone emulator on my Mac, but once I do, a review will be forthcoming.

But yeah, I’m so glad that I now can do cool, hacker-type stuff on my system. That was the whole point behind getting one really, and without that… well, at least by itself it still runs Lumines. And man, am I glad that I actually took the PSP plunge for that game; apparently, the rumor is that the upcoming PS2 release will be missing most of its licensed songs (the name, Lumines Plus, has since been referred to as Lumines Minus at NeoGAF). Aside from Shinin, which is so associated with the game that it would impossible to not have, everything else got cut. What a fucking shame… Meanwhile, Lumines 2, which I was going to ignore) since, hey, the first is good enough, right?) is now on my radar since I recently discovered that my favorite New Order song is on it. I was actually going to wait for the Japanese version, assuming it would have exclusive J-content, but it doesn’t, and is actually missing songs, like Star Guitar. WTF…

Gaming News: Sign O’ The Times

So the past couple of days I’ve been trying to get myself caught up on major gaming news, and I’m still pretty behind, so please correct me if I’m wrong… I get the sense that the Wii is still the hot toy that is to this day impossible to find, as well as the DS. I even heard that Wii might be close to surpassing the Xbox 360 here in the US in terms of user base (still need to see the proof behind that one, but if true…. wow). Meanwhile, I get the sense that Sony has had much better days. Granted, they kinda set themselves up most of the time, but still….

As a result, the Sony faithful seem to be quite sensitive these days. Take Virtua Fighter 5′s poor retail performance in Japan for example. Some people are now blaming it on the PS3, and that’s partly correct; the reason why the game isn’t doing so well is that the system isn’t either. But now some are wondering if the fighting genre as a whole is officially dead, and if so, is Sony to blame? Ummm…. Another sentiment that I’ve heard expressed goes something along the lines of “Japan is going to have to cope with the reality that Nintendo’s console will be the number one platform” like its some terminal illness. And then you have something like this, with a bunch of folks freaking out over Gamestop’s new trade-in promotion because they believe it is “wrong” (I believe one person even called it slander) how the PSP to fetch such a low price. Also not helping Sony’s image is stuff like this review for the PS3 version of flOw which, get this, has slow-down. A Flash game that has slowdown on a $600. Holy shit.

As for other notable “stuff”…

- Hey, so the Tingle RPG is coming out in Europe! Which means a possible US release might not be that far off. And even if it doesn’t come, we now have an English version!

- Konami has a new shmup on the way called Otomedius. Its kinda like Gradius and Parodius… except instead of a ship you get to pilot girls…

Actually, the game doesn’t look half bad. The third page of the thread has some videos that are definiately worth checking out. But yeah, its definfintely NOT your father’s Gradius.

- Sticking with Konami and creepiness and the Gaming Age Forums, here’s a thread that details the two different dating sims the company is coming out with, one in Japan and one here in America. And the difference, while not all the surprising, are still amusing nonetheless. Me thinks that Japan believes we love our Grand Theft Auto’s a bit too much, at least our enjoyment of virtual skanks. Anyway, this is more notable in my mind that the Silent Hill arcade light gun game that was recently announced.

- BTW, there’s this big arcade show going on in Japan, hence the news about the Lolidus game. Aside from showing off their sequel to Mario Kart Arcade (yeah… most folks haven’t heard of it either), Namco also provided possible proof to that notion that the fighting genre might be dead after-all: check out the trailer to Tekken 6. It?s about time I turned in my Tekken fan club membership card.

- Another interesting item from IGN: an interview with Suda 51, the dude behind Killer 7 (which as everyone knows is a game that I am SOOOO in love with). In it, he mentions that he will try his best to make sure his latest game, for the Wii, which seems very Killer 7-like, will be even more violent that Manhunt 2, the recently announced sequel to Rockstar’s most craziest, most demented game ever created (that no one bothered to buy). Remember that game? Its where you could choke a bad guy with a plastic bag. Anyway, I hear the Wii sequel will allow for stabbing motions. Neat! Suda also shrugs off rumors that he’s working with Kojima on some the rumored Snatcher remake/sequel.

- Back onto the subject of Konami, here’s Kojima’s idea for an online multiplayer zombie game if he were to make one. It’s…. rather Kojima-esque.

- I guess I should mention that all last week was FKW, a.k.a. Fucking Konami Week, at Select Button. And I totally missed out on it. Hey, I’ve been busy! Anyway, truth be told, I wasn’t so hot with the idea since its such a Insert Credit thing, and I figured it would have been best to do something a little different… a Fucking Capcom Week for example.

So I shouldn’t have been too surprised with ShaperMC told me earlier this week to check out TGQ later that night for something I would like: issue #8 is finally out and its a total Capcom-lovefest!

Oh, and that TGQ article that I said I was going to do? Guess it’ll have to wait till #9!

- Those who really want to go all out with the Wii’s Virtual Console might be interested in this: now you can play your old NES and SNES controllers on the system.

- An oldie, but a goodie I guess, plus its been a while since I’ve mentioned anything relating to Second Life. Some far-right, French nationalist group being the target of protests in the game via exploding pigs. Neat, but the first obvious question is what in the fuck is such a group doing in Second Life to being with?! According to the article, they had “set up headquarters”. Okay….

- Time for another crazy freeware shmup: this one is called Retron and lives up to the name, both in sound and visuals. Also, its pretty damn tricky to play.

- As everyone knows, I’m always on the look out for video game related cinema (and no, my GSW column is not dead, I’ve just once again been swamped with… stuff…. but I GUARANTEE that a new installment will be online this Thursday/Friday…. hear that Simon, I haven’t been totally slacking!!!), so I simply have to see this: Moral Kombat, a documentary that explores the ill effects that video games might possibly have on youth of America and society as a whole. It definitely appears to go for the jugular with the whole “its a murder simulator” aspect, and even goes far as to say that video games allowed 9/11 to happen (which I have unfortunately have heard before).

I also find it very funny how a movie that seems so hateful towards video games and perhaps technology as a whole, and so scared of what kids are doing with said tech, has to use MySpace as the place for its official web presence.

- And here’s anothe quick YouTube links: a random cutscene from a lousy Transformers game for the PS2 that I have been unlucky enough to play. Many people say that Optimus sounds like Alucard from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and I think that’s because it is. Anyway, the game is pure crap, and from the fifteen minutes I played of it, there were all these randomly generated Decepticons coming at you at all sides, and with such shitty controls, all I can do is have Optimus run away, which was hardly becoming of him.

- Finally, apparently Mizuguchi that Rez was coming to the Wii. Anyone else hear of this? It was apparently on an episode of the 1UP Show? Which I confess that I do not keep track of since, till this day, 1UP.com still doesn’t play well with Macs. So… can anyone confirm this, at least being stated?

Game of The Year? Concept of the Century

One more thing…. something that O’Connor unearthed which, quite simply, has blown my mind: some guy is making a game based upon Les Miserables.

First off, just the very idea of a LesMis game is insane, but there’s more… MUCH more. Its actually going to be the first of a series of games, with each subsequent installment using another famous work of literature as source material. Next will be War and Peace, then assorted fairly tales, then Dante’s Inferno, The Time Machine, Journey to the Center of the Earth, the Epic of Gilgamesh, plus various plays by Shakespeare, including Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, with the long-term goal being every play by him. And the best part of all this? They all take place in the same game universe.

For more information, check out this info regarding your game’s character and how he’ll be traversing all those stories for starters. And then just click around and around and around… I’m definitely going to following the progress on this one.

EDIT: Robin actually reminded me that there was once a Les Miserables fighting game that was once mentioned at Insert Credit a long whiles back, that I vaguely remember as well, but I can’t seem to find any info. So if someone could please hook a brotha up, it would be mucho appreciated.

EDIT #2: Just found the info! It was apparently being made by the folks who made Dot Fighter?!?! Just scroll down here for some screen shots.
