I’m a huge fan of video game Tumblrs, especially ones that have a very specific focus. BOX VS BOX, which compares packaging between regions or other criteria, and Video Games That Have Bears In Them, which is fairly self-explanatory, are just two favorite examples.
But then you have Are We There Yet?, a relatively new one that’s dedicated to mini maps. It mostly draws upon arcade games from the late 80s/early 90s, along with various 16-bit home offerings, which apparently was the apex of this (until now) unappreciated art form.
BTW, my pal Slonie is the guy responsible, an old (mostly internet, but eventually IRL) pal who is way into racing. At first it was cars, but eventually morphed into biking, though he’s still way into games.
He recently turned me onto a webcomic about cycling that depicts everything as flat shaded polygons. Everything looks like Sega’s early Model 1 games, an esthetic that I’m equally way into. And an observation that Slonie brought up to the creator, hence the following…

Colored blocks on a computer screen are becoming increasingly popular as a means for artistic expression. Though for the most part, it’s young folks who have embraced the medium of pixels. But not Hal Lasko, aka “Grandpa”.
Lasko is 97 years old veteran graphic designer. He used to create typefaces entirely by hand, without the benefit of a computer. Something that’s almost inconceivable, even to those of us in our mid-30s.
Lasko also used to paint, until he developed wet macular degeneration, causing blindness in the center of his vision. But that’s where Microsoft Paint, introduced to him by grandson Ryan some 15 years ago, came into play.
Thanks for the heads up Michele!

Okay, there’s no such thing, but it seems like everyone is talking about Animal Crossing: New Leaf non-stop. And for good reason: game’s hella awesome. It’s certainly all I’ve been playing as of late.
I also love talking about it others. Mostly fellow addicts, to hear about that one single moment in which they realized that they were hopelessly hooked. For myself, it was the realization that I could fill my house with nothing but AC‘s Astro City-like cabinets.
My home gaming center is coming along quite nicely, BTW! Though I’m still waiting on a GameCube to show up at Super T&T for the finishing touch.
Anyhow the above was found on Tumblr and is fairly popular, so you may have seen it already, but it’s news to me and maybe for others out there as well. I also dig the following, which Eric posted on Twitter a few days ago:
“yo im selling this alpine sofa. starting price is 2400 bells inbox me if youre interested”
