In this post:
1. The rest of the best of!
2. Plus a birthday head’s up.

Before diving headfirst into part 2 of my big rundown and analysis of notable news and nonsense from the last half of last month, least one “major” headline has broken since yesterday?s part 1, and that is…

- Sonic is back, and in 2D! Like most of us has wanted since forever. To the point that it’s almost too late, but Sega in recent years has never been the best when it’s come to timing (among other issues). Plus, for those actually keeping track; he’s actually been in 2D for sometime now; there’s the Advance series, the two Rush installments, and does the BioWare RPGs count? Anyway, and as already noted at that other place where I write about games, it’s destined to be another colossal disappointment, but not in the form of some retarded sidekick, but the piss poor execution of motion controls.

- Here’s something else that just popped up; a quick and cute commercial for Minna no Tennis Portable. You know how the folks who made Mario Golf decided to make Mario Tennis? Same thing here, but with the folks who make Hot Shots Golf for Sony.

- Well, I just beat No More Heroes 2, and I honestly can’t recall the last time I’ve become so engrossed and obsessed (for a lack of a better word) with a game, not since Flower, Sun, and Rain, another Grasshopper Manufacture release of all things. I’ll try to explain why next time, since I mostly just want to stick to a link-dump, though I will say that, other than my desire to beat the game all over again but at a higher difficulty setting (no matter how much I love a game, normally when I finish it I almost always move onto something else, but not this time, which hasn’t happened since Persona 4, it’s just that damn good), I now want to re-visit the original, but the HD re-releases, especially since pre-order bonuses have been revealed

… Unfortunately the PS3 version will be censored, but I recall people saying that the black pixels instead of blood was actually cooler. All I care about is if the extra amount of skin that’s supposed to be in the Xbox 360 version makes it over as well!

- Time for two additional Siliconera items that broke since yesterday as well: that DSiWare fighting game that uses you and your friends, via the camera, might be coming to the US?? Nice.

- And the GameCube was secretly a 3D machine (as in Avatar 3D, not games that are simply three dimensional)? Weird.

- Not sure if everyone knows this by now, but it’s the 10 year anniversary of The Sims! And what better way to celebrate than a bunch of custom iPhone skins.

- Haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, but I will quite soon (especially since it’s only going to be online for the rest of the month, maybe less): the documentary that takes a close look at video game violence, Moral Kombat.

- Alright, time to get to business, and deep into the heart of Darkness, aka Sankaku Complex. Which has been especially creepy and disgusting as of late, even for me (which is saying a LOT). But it’s still the place for some of the finest, hard-hitting game reporting about Japan you’ll find anywhere! For starters, they’re all over Final Fantasy, as you’ll soon see. Like this post about the proposed Western-flavored Final Fantasy that never came to fruition.

- SC also loves reporting how poorly the Xbox 360 is doing in Japan, like how the Core system is worth about five bucks. Dude, I would GLADLY pay that much for one to play some of the Japanese only software.

- Gotta say, these Final Fantasy XIII figures look mighty impressive

- Hey, the PS3 has finally been cracked! That certainly took long enough.

- The console wars illustrated in the form of yaoi.

- On a related note, Famitsu recently got into some hot water for a Final Fantasy XIII comic that ran in its pages that featured tentacle rape.

- Some more on that ultra creepy virtual girlfriend simulator, Real Kanojo. Warning, pretty much NSFW!

- As most folks have heard by now, Sega finally released a patch for PS3 owners of Bayonetta to make that game somewhat more tolerable on the Sony system. Still visually inferior to the Xbox 360 version I’m afraid.

And as we would all later found out, it was Sony who had more to do with the miracle fix than Sega (who were the ones who said the long load time issue was unfixable in the first place).

- Yet on a related note, the Xbox 360 version of the Final Fantasy XII apparently can’t hold a candle to the PS3 version. Interesting…

- Who plays the Wii in Japan? Little boys and older women.

- Here’s a surprise: Final Fantasy XIII was originally being developed for the PS2!

- Back to Famitsu, which accidentally spilled the beans on a Love Plus sequel. Though the only reason why I’m mentioning this item is because of the chick from Love Plus X chick from Gurren Lagann (Yoko, sorry I don’t know any of the names of the girls from Love Plus) fan art…

- And gotta love SC’s take on the Dead Or Alive Paradise contains “creepy voyeurism”. Some of the screenshots provided are good God!

- I know everyone’s talking about the Dante’s Inferno Super Bowl ad controversy (I actually kinda like the new one, good use of an old song in a new setting, as cheesy as it might be), though what I care about the most is the animu. Okay, not really; looks pretty horrible actually.

- Well, since we’re here already, may as well pass along some of the more interesting (IMHO) items that have showed up on Kotaku as of late. Like how… I’m considered a member of “gaming’s Twitterati”! Not gonna lie, pretty happy with such a distinction.

- Next is Stephen’s list of games that are candidates for the next Duke Nukem Forever, in the sense that they may never come out, or so it feels like.

On a related note, JC recently interviewed the man behind the pixels regarding the WiiWare version of Cave Story. Unfortunately, not the one question everyone has, which is when the hell it’s coming out, was exactly answered.

- So Warner Bros has apparently purchased the film rights for Mortal Kombat from Midway, back when they were liquidating all assets, and will be doing a reboot. Interesting… can’t be any worse than the recent Superman and Batman reboots. Actually, yes it can!

- Did you hear about the time Andy Garcia made a surprise visit to Sonic Team?

- Attn Katie, this is most definitely relevant to your interests

- So when Raiden from MGS: Rising finally shows up, he’s gonna look a tad bit different from what we last remembered. Meanwhile, Kojima’s REALLY sorry about the Peace Walker delay.

- Back to Twitter, and during a post that’s supposed to be about Mass Effect 2, the maker of Rez and Lumines had some very harsh things to say about the DS! Such a shame since Meteos (especially the Disney version, believe it or not) was outstanding.

- And I really appreciated their look at other GameCube games that could stand a re-release on the Wii. My vote goes for Billy Hatcher!

- It’s Professor Layton, on ice. Nuff said!

- So there’s a new game coming out for Xbox’s indie games channel called Flotilla, which is very reminiscent of Homeworld. Didn’t care for the original back in the day, so I should perhaps not care about this remake/tribute, but I do, if only because of this one screenshot…

- Speaking of the Microsoft’s indie initiative, or lack thereof, here we have Brandon with an excellent breakdown.

- And here’s Brandon’s look at the often ignored Indie Games Student Showcase.

- Plus at long last, he’s compiled what games to check out (the dude simply has the best taste, bar none) in a very convenient forwmat!

- Via his Tumblr is a video that I also would love to be a video game somehow.

- Speaking of Tumblr, here’s a new one that I recently stumbled across that’s all about the wild world of box art. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; I miss the days of futures past…

- Another place that I recently just learned about is Eastern Minds, which covers the same extremely obscure and hardcore Japanese beat that Insert Credit used to (R.I.P.). Anyhow, take a gander at all the different endings in the PSone puzzle classic I.Q. Final. They’re actually totally insane.

- And here’s a look at soda machines as they pop up in games. I’m a bit disappointed that Persona 4′s offerings didn’t get at least a mention.

- Game & Watch are coming back! Albeit a bit smaller.

- On a similar note, and what I actually want, are these mini, screen-less versions of Street Fighter and Xevious.

- Yet the definitely highlight of the place, and why it’s now a permanent fixture of my RSS reader, is this expose of an old Capcom title that’s based upon the most unlikeliest of films; instead of it being some big-budget action spectacular, its a satirical drama that’s about… tax evasion?

- Check out this old Fantastic Four cover that’s been infused with a dash of Donkey Kong

- And sticking with fan-art for a bit, here’s a badass rendering of Akuma as a biker that I recently stumbled across (sorry, but I have no idea who the original artist is)…

- I’ve seen plenty of Super Mario fan art in my day, but very few, if any, to feature the princess from Galaxy…

- This is also my first encounter with Monster Hunter fan art as well…

- A bunch of Vocaloids playing PS3…

- Alright, I’ve had these screenshots since almost forever, so now might be a good time as any to pass them along (since for whatever reason, I’m paranoid that I don’t have enough pics for this particular journal entry); they’re actual screenshots I believe from a game. I actually had the installer, but then accidentally trashed it, and can’t for the life of me remember what the name was. And yeah, I’ve been kicking myself ever since…

… There’s one last screenshot, and even though you really can’t tell what’s going on, I’m still keeping it hidden since it does depict squirting penises and at least one vagina, as impossible to make out as they might be.

- Though with that in mind, I don’t feel nearly as dirty for passing along this piece of wonderful Persona 4 fan art!

… But if it’s “too much”, someone let me know and I’ll hide it as well.

- I too must lament the death of character based rhythm games.

Though on a semi-related note, Courtney Love now states that her departed husband Kurt would have loved to have been fine with how he’s been portrayed in Guitar Hero 5. You know, I really miss the man’s music, and it’s sad that his life ended so early and so tragically, but on the bright side is that he doesn’t have to deal with this idiot anymore. Yeesh.

- So long story short, both myself and Hilary are obsessed with these goth kids who dance around Southern California (they were #5 in my top ten random videos of 09 as some might recall), which led us to do doing some research as to who the hell these folks are, and thus I came across The Gothsicles. They’re not related to the dancing kids, btw.

Anyhow, I figured them to be a goth chiptune act, but it’s mostly a traditional electronic ensemble that regularly references video games…

… Be sure to hit their MySpace and check out their Konami Code song.

- It feels like forever since we first got wind of the iPhone version of Noby Noby Boy, but it’s still coming, and was even demoed publicly not too long ago!

- Apparently, at a Panera Brea in the city, is some dude who sits around playing World of Warcraft all day long, via the establishment’s WiFi. Doesn’t sound too insane, right? Well, he’s not using a laptop but an actual desktop, an iMac to be exact.

- As noted many times before, I’m a big fan of augmented reality as is, but when you add Virtual On to the mix, you’ve pretty much struck gold IMHO!

- Also via Mecha Damashii, and I know I’ve already gone over toys and figures and the like already, but this too just came up: someone’s created an actual transformable model of the Vic Viper from Zone of the Enders!

- Hey, did I ever mention that I recently started contributing over there as well? Here’s a somewhat recent post about the return of the Shagohod (somewhat) in the new MGS PSP.

… I seriously happy about this, btw!

- Meanwhile, over at Heavy, been meaning to pass along a review of Silent Hill for the Wii for some time now, but I’ve just been so busy with so many things (plus No More Heroes 2 sorta got in the way). But anyhow, it’s an amazing game. Seriously! And it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who feels this way.

- The last major stop is, of course, GameSetWatch! Said it before, and I’ll say it again: pound for pound the best damn game blog you’ll find anywhere! The place is simply chock full of so much awesome stuff that it’s actually pretty easy to miss something that one should not miss! Like the 411 on a game that involved you folding pieces of paper so a stick guy can deliver a cake.

- This four player take on Space Invaders seems like a pale wannabe Extreme to me, but it still looks fairly interesting.

- Maestro is heading to the iPhone? What isn’t these days, amirite?

- These (mock/concept) screenshots for a Natal game that ultimately got scrapped look positively insane…

- Hey, Canabalt fan art! I’m genuinely shocked and disappointed that no one went for the obvious joke of having the running man run into Faith from Mirror’s Edge.

- God, Bit.Trip Runner looks (and now sounds, literally) more and more awesome with every little detail that becomes unveiled.

- The idea of a game in which you control someone like Indiana Jones, except his a lazy-ass, is all kinds of genius.

- Yet it still pales in comparison to the arcade game in which you don’t shoot aliens or punch street fighters but flip a table over in anger. Once again, God bless the Japanese!

- Haven’t gotten a chance to check it out yet, but since I was a BIG fan of Donkey Kong ’94, I’m fairly certain that I will love Monkey Kong.

- Remember what I said last time about the Xbox being the spiritual successor of the Dreamcast? Well, these very Sega-like ads centering on a downtrodden Xbox 360 simply hits that message even closer to home.

- God, I really wish I could have attended this chiptune event, if only to pick up an print version of this poster…

- And speaking of posters, check out this print inspired by Tommy

- Official GDC 2010 promotional vid take two. And unfortunately, I’m pretty certain that there will be way too many “Cake Is A Lie” jokes at the show.

- I’m sure I’ve already mentioned this before, but once again, Korgs DS-10 Plus is coming out real soon! Can’t wait; been playing around with the original a lot as late, create mini compositions while on the toilet bowl. Next stop Pulsewave for sure.

- Time for another look at the crazy world that is the demoscene, with a look at the best of 2009; here’s part one and part two.

- So the scope of the Kokoromi Collective’s Gamma 4 seems to have expanded a bit; instead of just having one button games, they’re now asking for one button objects as well?

BTW, here’s an excellent example of the types of games that’s been arriving at Phil Fish’s inbox. And for anyone wondering how many games there will be, the answer is a lot!

- Back to chiptunes, here’s another fantastic installment of Sound Current, this time featuring all the awesome Game Boy music related goods would have been able to find at the Comiket 77.

- Remember that Parodius fan art from last time? Here’s some more from the same source, and it’s all Konami themed!

- So my jaw literally dropped when I heard the news that Akira Yamaoka, best known for this music on Silent Hill, had joined Goichi Suda & company. But shortly afterwards I downloaded a audio rip of NMH2 and noticed that his name was credited and only then realized that some of the music sounds an awful like something he would create. Plus this Tiny Cartridge post all but confirmed his involvement.

- And yes, these arcade mugs are kinda cool (but somewhat useless to me, since I hardly ever drink any hot beverages).

- I also think this concept art from a game that never happened is equally cool, but will agree with the comments that it seems a bit too Masamune Shirow…

- Actually, one last stop, to help justify my paycheck; a round-up of my fave Heayy posts…

Remember kids, campers never win.

First person Tetris.

Where Capcom REALLY gets their ideas from.

Video games killed the porn star.

Guess what? Muscle March is not THAT bad after-all.

A movie based on a game that was based upon a movie.

You know, instead of District 9, the Halo movie could have been the one to rub shoulders with Inglourious Basterds & Precious for the best picture Oscar.

And I still can’t believe there’s a reality show in which the grand prize is to be a video game tester.

Oh, one more last thing, for real, and something totally non-game related: today is Katie’s birthday! And because she likes gray kitty cats…

1. Basically, everything that you need to know from the world of games from the past couple of weeks, part one.

Where to start? From the top, naturally…

- Obviously, the biggest news from the past couple of weeks has been the iPad. And I think I’ve pretty much said everything that I’ve needed to say as far as that subject is concerned, both here and over at Heavy. Yet ultimately, my two cents means nothing since I’ve yet to actually test-drive the device. Hence why this hands on report from Mike McWhertor is quite enlightening.

Equally unimpressed was Nintendo’s head honcho, who scoffed at the fact that it’s simply a bigger iPod Touch and offered nothing really new. Which I totally agree with, but it still seems a tad bit silly coming from the guy who just made another billion from yet another version of the DS, expect it’s just bigger (i.e. the DSi LL). Plus, dude’s just jealous that the App Store blows away the DSiWare Store by like ten billion percent.

But what really matters is what those who make iPhone/iPod Touch games think of it, at least the good ones, since they’ll be the ones to justify its purchase for many. Including myself; when all is said and done, I’ll probably end up owning the device someday (hey, I thought the PSP was a piece of crap, but I eventually got one… though my opinions has not differed all that greatly). And according to indie gaming’s justice league, the overall feeling is that it opens the door to a great deal of possibilities, at least gameplay-wise. The funniest thing is hearing everyone become a tad bit less tight-lipped when it comes to size of the current devices’ screen and how too damn small it is (again, as much as I love Eliss, it’s almost impossible to play because your fingers cover up so much of the action).

Though on the not so positive side, which wasn’t touched upon much in Brandon’s summation, but was easily found in the one place where everyone goes to complain, i.e. Twitter, is how many are less than sold on Apple’s notion of an “app gold rush”. Aside from wondering if the device will actually do well (as stupid as I think it is, I’m certain it’ll be successful… later down the road, when bare essentials are finally added, like a camera and multi-tasking), one has to also consider the impact it’ll have on the existing App Store, which is already beyond inadequate.

Actually, the only opinion that truly matters belongs to Pee Wee Herman! Anyhow, even I’m sick and tired of all the iPad talk at this point. Moving on…

- Hey, did you hear? Mass Effect 2 came out recently…

… Via Lost Levels.

- Though once again, when it comes to advertising a game’s release, no one does it better than the Japanese.

- The situation at Rockstar San Diego continues one, with the IGDA recently issuing a public statement regarding the need for an investigation and end to the deplorable conditions that led to the wives of those employees calling out for help. And the official response?

Well, in addition to that stupid piece of wallpaper, it would seem ultimately that HQ could give a rat’s ass. You’d think that they would at least issue a diplomatic “we’re looking into it” statement, but not even. Worst of all are all the defenders, who like to shrug the situation off by stating that this is simply how business is done. Like that’s a valid reason?

- I really hope that everyone got the chance to pick up Critter Crunch when it was half off a few weeks ago. But if not, still get anyway, cuz it’s awesome! Anyhow, even though it’s old, I’m still passing along this pic since I’m a fan of (old school) National Lampoon…

- Time once again for another installment of Iwata Asks! This time the topic is the handheld Legend of Zeldas, and among the many nuggets of information is how Link’s Awakening was inspired by Twin Peaks, and how the very first game for the NES’s second quest was the result of an accident!

- Metal Gear Solid: Piece Walker has finally been unveiled, and… it’s a multiplayer jigsaw puzzle. Okay…

- And yes, I’m still very much interested in Dead Or Alive: Paradise, even though it’s been categorized as “creepy” by the ESRB.

Actually, they just did an about face. But still…

… Though I’m most interesting in checking out how Rio, that poster chick, will turn out. As some might already know, she’s the star of a line of pachinko games back home…

… Hopefully the transition from 2D to 3D won’t be too awkward, but then again, the DOA girls personify that world with a capital a.

- Rez HD is coming to the PS3! Maybe. Provided if people are interested, and that’s precisely what Q Entertainment is trying to find out.

- As most folks know already, Mega Man Zero 1-4 for the GBA is getting collected for a single DS card release. Which is obviously quite neat, though I’d much rather have a third Mega Man XZ personally.

- And here’s a trailer for the Super Street Fighter 4 anime that’s supposed to come out when the game does in Japan, I believe as a downloadable in game?

- Plus, some folks might find this cute, even heart-warming, while others might find it cheesy, even offensive: a bunch of Street Fighters lending aid in Haiti…

- Heavy Rain keeps making more and more headlines as the release date steadily approaches, which I guess is very soon? Honestly, I can’t be bothered to find out the exact date. I mean seriously, people actually want to play this?!?! Granted, the interface seems really cool, but much like how I felt the same way about Killer 7, this too looks to be like complete sh*t.

Yet regarding my long-standing disdain for K7, I still love Flower, Sun, and Run, plus No More Heroes, especially part 2! Funny, huh?

- So what happens when you release a revamp of a system that no one cares about, but it too goes ignored? You re-launch the revamp. It’s a Sony!

- Okay, forget the iPad, the Rockstar wives controversy, all that jazz: the real big news is that Death Smiles is coming to America! Yes, yes, YES!!! Siliconera has some of the details, but not all of them, like price, but as if it actually matters. Even if they go for $60 (which is highly doubtful), it’ll still be cheaper than importing the sucker, let alone the price of a Japanese 360.

As for release date, all we know is sometime during the summer… not sure why they can’t push it sooner, but whatever. My only fear is that the box are looks as mangled as the US release of Senko no Ronde, but I have a tad bit more faith in Aksys than Ubi Soft!

- May as well make Siliconera our first major stop since we’re already here; once again, it’s a great place to learn more about visual novels, such as their barriers to entry.

- Hey, Leona is coming to Metal Slug XX! That’s kewl.

- I’m fairly certain that Siliconera was the very first to break news of After Burner Climax coming to the home. It won’t be anywhere as cool as the arcade game, sans the amazing cockpit (which I’m so glad to have been able to experience in Japan), but hey, something’s better than nothing!

- It’s Mario Kart, but in the real

- The latest from the folks behind Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman might be the flat-out neatest looking PSP game ever. Seriously, watch the video, the art style is INCREDIBLE.

- If you’re like me, you could ultimate not give a flying f*ck about the Xbox Game Room initiative, but this post is still worth checking out, especially if you’ve never heard of Jail Break. Again, just watch the vid, you will not regret it.

- You know, I’m kinda interested in that DSi BlazBlue game, now that it appears to look like Rakugaki Showtime.

- I’m honestly surprised it’s taken Namco this long to go ahead with Pac Man themed pizza parlors. And yay, a pizza pie served with a slice missing.

- Good news for Virtual Console fans! Not only is the Castlevania/Dracula X: Ronde of Blood finally coming to the US, in the undetermined near future (though hopefully soon), but Mega Man 4 as well, at least in Japan. Though you can count a stateside release not long after (as far as I’m concerned, it’s by far the most underrated of the original Mega Mans).

- Back to Aksys and any questions as to how they’ll be pushing Death Smiles, after watching this promotional video for the North American release of Cho Aniki, any lingering concerns has been tossed out the window! It’s definitely in good hands.

- Even though the sprites in Neo Geo Battle Coliseum do not look redrawn at all, but simply given the soft filter treatment, I’ll still get it if it comes to the States.

- And at long last, Fret Nice comes out this Thursday! But only for the PS3. Which sorta sucks since all my guitar controllers are for the 360. But according to Siliconera, a XBLA version is still on the way. Whew!

- Some details regarding Metroid: Other M from the series co-creator. This new game will apparently explore the “human side” of Samus, which certainly explains the soft piano music that can heard at the official website. Because that’s what all women sound like on the inside.

- As much as I can’t stand hospital shows (it’s a long story, but I just think they’re retarded… no offense to fans of House or Scrubs out there, the latter I have issues with due to it’s comedic values, or lack thereof, but that too is for another time), and as much as I have not been able to get into past Trauma Team games, this latest one simply looks awesome. For perhaps obvious reasons…

- After seeing James Kochalka live this past weekend, it just hit me that I haven’t been to his site in ages. And after going through the archive, I stumbled across this

– Here’s a pic that Katie took, featuring a subway construction sign and the ghosts from Super Mario

- Before there was the Angry Nintendo Nerd, there was this guy, playing Nightmare on Elm Street for the NES, wearing a Power Glove modified to be Freddy’s glove

… I loled.

- And this little kid’s top five list of the best shumps on mame is surprisingly decent!

- It was here yesterday, I swear it: a bunch of rap/Final Fantasy 7 mash-ups.

- If you’ve ever wanted to create a super accurate mini Beatmania arcade unit for your animu figures to blow some steam off with, well, here’s your chance

- Not exactly sure what this is either, some kind of group activity or meme going on at Pixiv that has people creating their own DS screenshot mock-ups

… Yeah, a lot of them are like that unfortunately.

- Via Tumblr; hey, guess Athena was the original moe blob!

- And via Twitter

- This is what happens when you fry an Atari 2600 game

- I always give Select Button a ton of sh*t (and much of it is completely valid), but every once in a while, it digs up some real gems. Course, I’m a sucker for anything Harvester related.

- Time for two wacky hardware modification videos from Japan: the first features an old Mega Drive that’s been retrofitted with remote controlled powered wheels! And the second is a very throughout explanation of a Dreamcast that has PC guts (to play PS2 games).

- Speaking of Sega, and according to Kotaku, the Xbox could have helped the Dreamcast stay alive. But alas, it was not meant to be. Though it does reaffirm the notion that Microsoft’s console was the DC’s spiritual successor.

- All right, the next major stop is the always awesome Tiny Cartridge! For those who haven’t been keeping up (since every post is practically gold, which is no easy feat given the frequencies of it’s posts), I’m here to lend a hand. First we have just a cute pic of two identical in Japan playing with their DSs

- So there’s a 100 page (“or so”) graphic novel in the works that recounts the important moments and personalities in the history of Nintendo

- Thanks to TC, I am now a better person for being aware of the glory that is Takahashi Meijin. Be sure to also check out his amazing ode to Bomberman. Honestly, as much of a creative genius Shigeru Miyamoto might be, this guy still seems twenty times more fun to hang out with.

Here’s one last Meijin video, this one featuring some head-to-head Star Soldier action!

- Count me down as a person that absolutely would love to see a Moon remake.

- Ever heard of an old Famicom game called Mr. Gimmick? The most important thing to note is the absolutely kick-ass soundtrack.

- Here’s a little something for you DS owners that also happen to be fans of Spirited Away!

- For you chiptunes fans out there, a bunch of super essential links.

- And speaking of Game Boy music, Saitone has a song in Pop ?n Music for the Wii!

- And speaking of the Wii, at long last, Fatal Frame 4 in English. Though no thanks to Tecmo I’m afraid; why in the hell they decided to pass on releasing that one here and instead passed along a crappy port of the PS2 Rygar is beyond anyone’s guess. Also, when the hell is the NES version coming out for the VC? The arcade version totally blows in comparison.

- Yeah, I wondered about Jimmy Fallon being in Dark Void Zero as well.

- A Famicom game that’s about Famicom games? Genius…

- And an iPhone stuck instead an GBA? That’s cool too.

- Once again, was not the biggest fan of Muramsa the game, but the art, that’s another story

- I would definitely play Monster In The City

- Word on the street is that those Pac Man buns are not so hot. Big surprise, they didn’t exactly look appetizing. Meanwhile, these Dragon Quest Slime buns look totally delicious!

- So Tommy Tallarico had his very own custom NES cart that simply produced sound? And it was found at a flea market? And a precursor to the Nintendo Synthesizer Cartridge?

- Hey, Maestro: Jump In Music is coming to the US, as a DSiWare release! Maybe. At least its chances are far stronger than any of the budget shmups also featured in that same post.

BTW, here’s a better look at one of the games featured, Assault Buster.

- I for one am on the look out for the Chinese DS knock-off that’s just $11. I’m pretty sure I can do better in Chinatown.

- I love how retro gaming has become the ultimate fashion/lifestyle/furniture accessory. Expect to see stuff like this a LOT more in the near future…

- Hey now, Suicide Girls just did another goofy video game themed photo set, this time centered on Silent Hill. Nothing is gonna beat the one with just some nerdy chick that’s just naked, wrapped in GameCube controller wires, or the two girls making out while playing the NES. Keep is simple, people.

- I enjoy video game fan art as much as the next person (actually, about twenty times more so), so these No More Heroes pieces are great and all, but the last one in particular is… not exactly accurate. Unless it’s a before pic (note: you have to be familiar with the first game to know what I’m talking about).

- Yet another budget shump coming out for DSiWare has the system being held upside down, to accommodate a second player. Seems kinda tricky to actually play, but interesting nonetheless.

- At long last, the identity of the guy who created that wacky Super Mario fan art featuring Larry David, finally revealed!

- And dear God, WarioWare DIY cannot come soon enough.

- As previously noted, the animu in No More Heroes 2 is simply awesome, and here’s a taste. Sure GTA4′s is worth a few laughs, but in terms of pure authenticity, there’s really no comparison.

- It’s not everyday that you see Parodius fan art

- For those who might be interested, a look at Tokyo’s Pokemon Center over the years

- Also via Figure.fm, some might recall one person’s positively mind-blowingly epic video game collection that made the rounds all over the place (like over at Heavy for example). Well, here’s even more pics

… Did everyone spot the Nintendo Light Telephone?

- Meanwhile, everyone at the Danny Choo portal is posting their last day of the convention’s best to be included in the new Otacool 2, which will center on cosplay. Here’s Danny’s favorites thus far; most of them are kinda “eh” in my book, except for this chick dressed as Ashlotte from Soul Calibur 4…

… Also the dude as Kamen Rider is equally fantastic.

- On a similar note, and via UK Resistance, I’ve just got two words: oh boy

- Sticking with Sonic

- May as well look at what’s happening in the world of game inspired toys and figures; for starters, yes, the new Layton figure is positively drool-worthy…

- A while back I mentioned a statue based upon KOF’s Vanessa. Well, here’s a closer look at the somewhat NSFW piece.

- I’d much rather have Kasumi, but this Ayane figure looks quite nice regardless. Then you have this one, from Ninja Gaiden; while I like the look of her better here, I simply cannot stand her goofy attire in the game…

- Wonder Festival 2010 is just around the corner, and as expected, there’s gonna be a ton of amazing stuff to gawk at. Like…

The highlight of this second round would easily have to be Big Boss of course…

But that’s not all! You’ve also got these, including…

- For those of you who enjoy Bayonetta, rejoice!

- Heh. Battletoads.

- Here’s something I should have snatched right away; Tomopop recently had a big gathering of assorted figure pics, and it included some shots of a custom Raidou Kuzunoha that looked totally awesome! But for whatever reason, the post was deleted. So all I can share are these smaller versions, from a screencap (thank goodness Google Reader can still access deleted blog posts)…

… There was also a very nice looking custom Mitsuru Kirijo as well. Bummer.

- I still say the greatest video game mecha of all time is Metal Gear Rex, though Lost Planet’s PTX-140 is most certainly the runner up

- Thus far, virtually every Mega Man action figure has basically blown (the Vile one doesn’t count because it’s a custom figure). But this new line has lots of promise!

- It sucks that leader-boards are not supported via the Wii, but for your Bit.Trip fans out there, have no fear, Commander Video is here to your rescue!

- Via GamOvr, holy sh*t, Typing of the Dead is coming to the Mac!!!

- Words simply cannot do this image any justice…

- Same with this

- I’m always a fan of video game themed furniture, even when it’s as silly as it is functional (usually more so)

- If you’re one of those that believe the graphics in Street Fighter 4 could have been so much better, and perhaps was till something stupid happened, guess what? You’re basically correct.

- It’s such a shame how Sim City used to have soul, till all the while people moved in.

- Oh God, please make it stop. Enough with the crappy homebrew games for the Dreamcast already. Just let it go people, let it go.

- Even though I seriously need more than one button when playing games on the Mac/PC, this clear Atari-styled stick is still quite nice…

- I definitely would have purchased this custom Radiant Silvergun Sega Saturn joystick if I actually had the game. But one day!

- Via pixelstyle, not sure what the hell it is, but it’s beautiful nonetheless

- As well as this

- Time to wrap this entry up (the best of Sankaku Complex and GameSetWatch will have to wait I’m afraid), with one last video. I’ll let the author explain this one:

“This speedrun uses a special method to overclock the virtual NES and remix the BIOS. This is tool assisted and recorded using ShamiCom Disk System for BeOS. Shoutouts to Jade and Tiana. Proudly made in Dixie.”

In this post:
1. I took that test again. And…
2. James Kochalka’s live chiptunes (at least in NYC) debut!
3. Once again, Zip Car + New Jersey = wacky!!!
4. And a bunch of random game related links.

So, how was everyone’s weekend? Mine was the same old, same old…

- Friday night I re-took the census-taking test. Didn’t get in nearly as much study time as I had hope, much like the week prior, but wasn’t completely unprepared either. In addition to knowing what to expect this time, I was able to relearn basic, 5th grade arithmetic via assorted YouTube videos. Seriously, I watched a bunch of videos like this.

For better or worse, the entire process itself wasn’t half as eventful as before. In place of that crazy old vet from last time was some ratty looking dude who appeared to be homeless (not that there’s anything wrong with that of course, and in fact, the very notion of a person trying to get off the streets by acquiring a job is obviously commendable). Though his growling and biting the air around him early on did signify the possibility of a spectacle that would be amusing at first, but ultimately drag the proceedings out and become annoying, much like the aforementioned old guy. Though in the end, he was just another eccentric New Yorker, nothing more, nothing less, so no real stories to share on that end. Otherwise, the only thing left to mention is my score, which was a 95! Only got two questions wrong, and even though I was aiming for a perfect 100, I’m pretty sure I’m in good standing and will get the call when work finally becomes available. Mostly, I just don’t feel like blowing a third Friday night in a row for such a thing.

- The very next evening was the first Pulsewave of the year 2010. And a special one at that; this particular gathering of chiptuners at The Tank saw the True Child Till Death 2009 Awards. Peter Swimm, the man who runs the chiptune related news and review site, was on-hand to help run the show, which was similar to most other ceremonies you’ve probably seen; between the awards being handed out were several live performances.

Things kicked off with a short set by the awards’ musical director, Oxygenstar, who I had never seen or heard of before, and who I need to see again; dude was something terrific. Immediately afterwards, the MC for the evening, Glomag hit the stage and sang an awesome rendition of the Tom Jones classic “Isn’t It Unusual”, followed by the first round of awards. All the winners had their accompanying hacked NES graphics, which was neat to say the least…

The second performer of the night (not counting all those who played during the chiptune open mic, which I completely missed out on) was Mark Denardo, who like always, did something a little kooky, and totally different; while sitting on an amp (or perhaps just nearby, it was hard to tell from my vantage point), he soulfully strummed a guitar to create a soundscape for a really old (to the point of being public domain) cartoon projected on the big screen, featuring a panda and his animal friends in ancient China. It was actually quite nice, but the audience didn’t quite dig; everyone was rather listless and lost in conversation. I think it might be better suited for a slightly different occasion and crowd, and hope that happens soon!

Got the chance to talk with the star attraction before he hit the stage, with whom I’ve chit-chatted with numerous times, but at indie comic shows (in fact, last time it was at SPX, about his Pocky & Rocky covers). The funniest part there was when I introduced him to Josh Davis, and didn’t realized till after their exchange that it was the world renown Bit Shifter! Who then immediately had to find him out and tell him “btw, I didn’t know who you were, I am a BIG fan of your music!” But yeah, Mark’s set was fantastic and I get the chance to see it again, in a slightly more conducive atmosphere.

Next up was the second round of awards, including the one for best visuals, which prompted Nullsleep to hit the stage the deliver the quote at the very top. But afterward was the aforementioned superstart, James Kochalka

… I’ve seen James perform countless times, back in the day, when he used to do shows in the city with his rock band. This was back when I was in school and his album Monkey Vs Robot had just come out. I’m afraid that I haven’t done the best of jobs keeping track of his musical output, though I did discover a while back that he had dabbled in chiptunes, and we even talked about it at SPX 08 (mostly over his rather nifty Pocky & Rocky cover that I had heard “somewhere”). So when I discovered that he was finally going to perform Game Boy music live, and for the first time ever (outside of his hometown, mind you), I simply had to be there. Not just to see Kochalka, but also to witness how the audience would react; Pulsewave might not be as high profile as the Blip Fest, but it’s still a very major deal in its own right.

Before his performance, I asked James if he had ever gone to a chiptunes show before, and the answer was no. And when I inquired as to what he thought, he was fairly blown away, almost overwhelmed. James noted that he was pretty nervous since he always had his band to provide back-up, and this time it would be just him on-stage. I also went into the detail about the performance aspects of chiptunes and what the audience expects, especially a seasoned crowd, like those who show up to Pulsewave or any NYC chip show. Even though everyone understands that much of the audio is pre-programmed (via special cartridges that act like music trackers, like LittleSoundDJ and Nanoloop), or because of it, the audience wants some improvisation if possible. The actual performance is quite important, at least to chiptune aficionados, and I guess I count as one..

Finally I asked what his plan was; he had brought his GBA and accompanying tools, as well as a back-up iPod in case anything went wrong (which unfortunately is a common occurrence; sometimes a flash cart might totally freeze and all the night’s music is totally gone with it). In the end, James simply sang and danced around, while Peter played songs on command…

… Not gonna lie; as much fun as it is too see the man go crazy on stage and interact with the audience, I was really hoping to see him directly interact with the hardware. But anyway, how was Kochalka’s NYC chiptune debut? Truth be told, somewhat awkward, at least in the beginning. For whatever reason, he went with plan B, maybe because there was a technical issue or perhaps he wanted to do something more performance based. Things were fairly rocky in the beginning; since Peter hadn’t been briefed on how to properly fire up the songs, one song kept playing before James was ready, which forced a bunch of restarts. There was a point in which James had to explain in minute detail what he wanted exactly, which was rather uncomfortable; at first the audience thought it was part of the act, but soon it was clear that this was not the case.

Thankfully, it didn?t last long, and James managed to win the crowd back with an improvised, acapella tune that showered love and affection towards his brand new sound guy. Though what really won everyone over was his selection of songs written by one of his sons, whose very own chiptune band recently played at his grade school talent show. I believe one was about robots versus bears…

… And here he is explaining to everyone what a blog war is, for his song “blog war”. Kochalka also explained a bit about himself, like how he’s used to performing live music with a band for many years, but has also experimented with chiptunes for some time now as well. And how when he approached his band-mates about the idea of performing chip music together, they gave him a very less than amused and resounding “no”. His passionate and reasonable arguments as to why chiptunes is so awesome went completely ignored, hence why Kochalka decided to strike out on his own.

There was also another song about his son his love for eating pussy (and yes, both of his sons are no older than five or six it I’m not mistaken) that got the crowd shaking. Another made this girl next to meowing throughout… might have been the same one, I forget. Later on, he went into the audience and gave everyone a hugs, and that was sweet.

Now, some of you might have noticed that James is slowly shedding his clothes. Well here is, singing about some big, golden bird, half naked…

… His set ended with him going ape-sh*t on the floor. I’m surprised that he didn’t get totally nude (which he did once, many years ago, at one of those performances I mentioned before). In the end, those who had been long-time fans of the man’s music (or simply comics) were not disappointed, and all those who had no idea who this guy was in the beginning, were made into converts. Here’s hoping he comes back for Blip Fest 2010!

Kochalka was immediately followed by additional awards, and… a chiptunes stand up comic. Now, anyone whose been to any sort of science fiction or fantasy convention might have encountered a sci fi, fantasy, or comic book comedian. And those people already know that it’s hell on earth (hence why I’m glad to have never encountered a video game equivalent, at least not yet). So when Peter Berkman-, I’m sorry, Skip Reynolds hit the stage, I had no idea what to expect. But the guy was actually hilarious! The best part was his impression of Bit Shifter, driving a car, and getting in a ski accident…

Here’s one last pic, of Bit Shifter and Nullsleep, accepting the best label award. It’s blurry and dark as all hell, but since they posed for it, I feel like a jerk-off for not including it…

… And if I end up going to GDC (I know it appeared to be a certainty in the past, but this have somewhat changed on my end, so it’s looking like 50/50 at this point… actually 30/70, unfortunately), a new camera will be part of the deal. I think. I hope.

Unfortunately, couldn’t stick around for Trashman (who made a surprise return from this triumphant showing at Blip Fest 09) or Animal Style, because I had to get up nice and early the next day, for…

- Katie and I rented another Zip Car for yet another day in Jersey, and this time we brought Colleen with us! There’s really not too much to say here, so I’ll just let the pictures do the talking; first stop was Party City, to pick up stuff for me & Katie?s big party next weekend. We mostly just tried on funny hats and masks…

… Though there was plenty of other wackiness to gawk at…

… Next stop was the Korean superstore, where funny hats could also be found at the gift shop…

… Remember that gigantic Zeta Gundam that I had my eye on? Finally asked how much it was; woman behind the counter gave a chuckle and stated “well over $200″ under the assumption that I would find such a price ridiculous. And actually, I don’t! Katie also wanted me to take a picture of that mutant chicken leg, also from before, that looked like it was from the Planet Zebes, but alas, it was nowhere to be found. So instead, check out all this kimchee!

At the snack counter; some “extreme” M&M’s…

Next we hit Toys R Us…

And then Ikea…

… Not to much show from the rest of the trip. Went to Mitsuwa, of course, but didn’t pull out the camera because there was no Mudkips!

- Anyhow, been meaning to pass along another massive link-dump (or as Eric from Tiny Cartridge calls them, my round-up of alternative gaming news/media, which sounds 100% classier) for the few days now, which would cover the rest of January to kick off February proper. But here it day two into the new month, and I’m so woefully behind on so many things that it just ain’t happening anytime soon. Mostly because I’m THIS close to beating No More Heroes 2; I was afraid that as awesome as it, perhaps pound for pound better than the first game, it might not have a boss fight that’s as magnificent as Bad Girl’s, till I came toe to toe with the Russian astronaut late last night. Holy sh*t, is it ever awesome (and I officially need the soundtrack STAT).

So instead, here’s just a few random, game-related pics that was going to be included, and perhaps has a better chance of being seen since they aren’t all deep and buried. First is something that’s definitely making the rounds, and which Katie first alerted me to…

Next, a picture from Slonie‘s recent trip to Japan, and long dream finally realized; a snapshot of himself, in his custom Taitovision tee along side the two-screen wide Darius…

This one is also from Slonie, I think?

And here’s something that Joe Salina recently tossed into the forums. I have no idea what it is going on…

Via Tumblr…

And via 4chan…

Finally, recently came across a random Japanese image board that had a f*ckton of awesome Darkstalkers pics. Gonna post the best ones (IMHO) over at Life Meter later tonight, but here’s my fave that might be too hot too hand for the generally speaking, all-ages portal…

- Speaking of too hot to handle, I recently got the 99% completed version of the FORT90ZINE’s centerfold, illustrated by Hilary, and good God is it hawt. Can’t wait to share it! And I just got an 85% version of the new cover as well, from Kinuko, and it too looks absolutely amazing! Gonna be the best issue yet, y’all. Just saying.
