Another fantastic Phil Fish quote to kick things off!

In this post:
1. A brief rundown on what’s been going on.
2. And two VERY important things.

As usual, things have been fairly insane. For the most part, LOTS of Babycastles: Manhattan pre-planning going on. Though before all that, highlights from the past two weeks, at least that which I can remember; with so much going on, it’s all a blur)…

- For starters, my aforementioned Scott Pilgrim movie review is finally up. Didn’t mean it to take so long (saw it on opening weekend, btw), it’s just been that hectic. Anyhow, the final verdict? I’m afraid it’s going to ruffle a few feathers, sorry!

Out of the three, the comics, movie, and game, the latter is what I’ve enjoyed the most for perhaps obvious reasons. Unfortunately, despite the gorgeous visuals and phenomenal soundtrack, it’s actually not that much fun to play. Something that was hardly a shocker; it’s not like I had an inside source (well, actually I did), but anyone familiar with Ubi Soft knows already that they could give a rat’s ass unless it has Splinter Cell or Assassin’s Creed in the title. So it’s still a miracle that we got anything in the first place. Haven’t had a chance to download the XBLA version yet; hopefully it’s free of all the retarded bugs found in the PSN release (though everyone told me not to hold my breathe). Unfortunately, that’s not the only issue; some of the design choices are exceptionally bullsh*t and indicative of someone that obviously has never played a side scroller brawler for more than 2 minutes, let alone the halfway point of past the first stage. That’s Ubi Soft for ya! And for those wanting further clarification, simply check this out.

- BTW, my healthy dose of the game was via three player action with Dave and Joe this past Friday, my last chance to hang out with the boys before they flew off to Japan. Which is where they are at this very moment, the lucky f*cks (they’re there mostly for Blip Fest Tokyo, but decided to head a week early to soak in all the sights and wonders there is to soak up. In addition to giving them money for our upcoming panel at the New York Anime Fest (again, it’s called The Best (And Worst) Games From Japan That You’ve Never Heard Of and each received some cash to get something truly “amazing” in Akihabara), I gave Joe a little extra to pick me up something specially. Ideally a shirt from BEAMS or graniph, but if it ends up being $50 worth of frozen panties, I won’t complain! But because they’ll be thawed out by the time they arrive, my enthusiasm might be a tad bit muted.

We also watched this video and laughed our collective asses off. Remember: “JOHN MADDEN, JOHN MADDEN, JOHN MADDEN.” And so forth.

- Speaking of hanging out, earlier that week yet another Canadian game guy came to town: Mathew Kumar! Myself and the girlfriend took our latest guest from the great white north to our second fave Korean joint in East Village. Which used to be our number one choice, btw, but it’s already slipping; last time I had the bulgogi, it was way too salty. Afterwards, Dave and I had him check out our fave el-cheapo watering hole, which doesn’t even have a name technically, it’s that low-fi; PBRs there are like $2! Highlight of the evening was Mathew’s reaction to my “perfect pets” concept, along with my celebrity sex clone dispensing machine idea. Basically, he thought I was completely insane. Perhaps stupid as well. Oh well, haters gonna hate, what can you do. Additionally, Kumar’s also a proud SD gamer, and when he heard of my woes regarding my set and how I was seriously considering an HD display, despite the fact that it’ll make all my classic consoles and VHS viewing a total headache, it was suggested that I call a repair person since he had a similar problem. One that got fixed! So fingers crossed.

- Back to games, finally got the chance to get my hands on Sonic 4. And… it kinda blows. Big surprise, huh? All the elements are there; game looks great, sounds just like Sonic 3/& Knuckles, and even the stage designs appear to be on the similar level. So what’s the problem? Sonic is made out of polygons, not pixels, and for whatever reason, his overly fluid animation makes him a slowpoke. The whole time I wonder why I wasn’t going faster, and since the levels are like in the classic games, as in your supposed to bounce around the screen like a pinball, it was excruciatingly awkward. Once again, another sure thing basically ruined. That’s Sega for ya! And I didn’t even mention the best part: when I asked the Sega rep about this, he claimed that it was completely faked. Seriously.

- Also got the chance to check out that new Wacom tablet for kids for the Wii that THQ is coming out with. Games slated for it is Pictionary (zzzz), a platformer that’s somewhat reminiscent of Wire Way (why they simply didn’t rip off Max and the Magic Marker is beyond me), and a scaled down, kid’s version of Photoshop (now we’re talking). This is basically Mario Paint all over again, and it absolutely rocks. Best part is how you can export the images as jpegs and easily pass them around. If only there was a way to do this back in the day; would love to show folks the slime porn landscapes I spent hours drafting! See, what I did was first take the mermaid stamp, edit out the fish tale, then the sea shell bra, then… moving on!

- This past weekend I finally experienced foci + loci , the new collaboration between Chris (glomag) Burke and Tamara Yadao that I’ve been dying to check out, ever since it was first described to me a little whiles ago. Basically, they both create audio spaces using Halo 3 (which Chris is obviously no stranger due, or at least his alter ego Damian Lacedaemion) and LittleBigPlanet. They performed at Secret Project Robot, in Williamsburg…

… I’ll be talking about it more, though later, and over at GameSetWatch! For that video game X performance art piece column that has yet to launch. But soon! Hopefully.

- The following evening was the Reformat The Planet DVD launch party! And as noted over at Attract Mode, been ages since it was just the magnificent three, a rare treat indeed. The place was surprisingly not super packed and the evening as a whole was fairly low-key; no doubt it being a Sunday night was a factor, along with the shitty weather. But in some ways, it made the evening all the more special, because the resulting vibe was quite intimate. Pretty much everyone in the audience knew each other, so it was almost like a family reunion of sorts. Case in point: was great catching up with Asif, who I’m certain was happy for the chance to simply kick back and enjoy a chiptunes show without having to worry about getting the angle or changing tape. Unfortunately, found out that he’ll be in Japan during PAX Prime weekend, filming Blip Fest Tokyo! Major bummer, but at least Paul Owens (who was also in attendance that night), plus the rest of Two Player Productions. God, I keep forgetting that PAX is only two weeks away. Actually less than; I fly out next Thursday morning!

Oh, and I suppose I should talk about the performances, which of course, was absolutely amazing. Glomag’s set of covers tore down the house, with every last remaining bit completely atomized by both Nullsleep and Bit Shifter, who blew the dust off inside and out of certain LSDJ carts to perform classic tunes that the audience hasn’t heard in a very long time. And some of which, primarily on Jeremiah’s end, that will never be performed ever again! Though the highlight for me had to be Josh’s set; his new song got everyone in a frenzy, which was almost immediately followed by a slowed down, soulful rendition of the song Reformat The Planet that got everyone all lovey-dovey. Which again, is the most hummable chiptunes song in existence! As for the movie, I’m beyond elated to finally be able to watch the thing (only chances I’ve had previously has during Blip Fest, when there’s about a billion other things going on); expect a full review of the special two DVD package over at… you guessed it… GameSetWatch! Once I find time to actually watch it, of course. Thus far at least, I can attest to how Fangamer has hit another home run with the exemplarily packaging; you can pre-order you copy (yes, I am indeed a lucky bastard to already have a copy) here.

- Hey, have I mentioned that I’m back writing for Heavy.com? Yup! And my first duty is to blog about Metroid, and nothing but Metroid, for the next month. Though I do have some help on that end… various luminaries from the world of indie games are posting their thoughts on the series; thus far we’ve heard from Nicklas Nygren and Anna Anthropy.

As for myself, only just gotten started though I’ve already covered a few of the basics: the hidden, discarded passages in the first Metroid (which is the main reason why the first is always going to be number on in my book, Super Metroid be damned) and that live action commercial for Other M starring the very delectable real life Samus (want to know how much of a mindless Metroid fanboy I am? I actually think the new game looks awesome).

- On a much sadder note, one of my all-time favorite artists, Satoshi Kon, recently passed away. I’ve been a diehard fan ever since Perfect Blue and it hasn’t stopped since. Even though his body of work is relatively modest when compared to his contemporaries, every single frame of it is absolutely captivating and flat out beautiful. That’s the biggest shame really; he was only getting started. I still remember clearly, his appearance at the North American premiere of Millennium Actress, in which he stated it was very difficult for him to get financing for his movies in Japan, which is more or less dominated by giant robots and school girls.

But in the end, he managed to defy the odds. And as a result, whenever I encounter anyone that states “all that anime crap is exactly the same”, Kon’s work has always been my go-to example to prove such assumption is dead wrong. He’s really going to be missed, and I hope to God he was able to put as much into his final film, The Dream Machine, before his passing.

- Check this out; the latest video starring my pal Heather and her pals in The Midnight Show! Though my persona fave will always be Immortal Dog. So Comedy Central, are you guys gonna sign them up or what? What’s the delay?

- Speaking of television; so the other night on cable access was a show starring furries featuring clips from episodes past in which various “furs” were playing video games. This particular program has apparently been around forever, cuz it went back ages; you had one playing Hangman on the Commodore 64, “special guest” Chuck E. Cheese playing Donkey Kong, a visit to some arcade where one played Q-Bert, and a bunch gathered in a tiny little bedroom for versus Super Mario Kart. It was awesome. It’s just a shame that those outside of Manhattan are not able to share in such splendors… though I am working on a solution! Not to spoil the big reveal, but I’ve been working on a secret project that deals with my intense love for cable access that I’ve been aching to reveal, along with Katie, who keeps asking when I’m finally going to pull off the covers! But that’s for next time. And hopefully I’l have enough time to launch it, before I become completely wrapped up in pre-PAX & SPX madness!

… There’s also a couple of things on the immediate horizon; tomorrow’s a Konami press event, where I’ll finally get to test drive the new Kojima Productions led Castlevania title. Am cautiously optimistic about that one. At the least the American version of Otomedius should be on hand as well and am guaranteed to have tons of fun with that one! Plus later this weekend I’m checking out The Dudleys, which is having it’s long-awaited, official run. Some might recall my report from the dress rehearsal from late last year. Can’t wait to see the finalized version. Which I?ll be reporting on for… say it with me one more time: GameSetWatch!

But before wrapping things up, there’s two super important things I need to go over and remind people about:

#1. Help Babycastles (And Indie Gaming) Take Manhattan!

As everyone already knows by now, I’m helping out with the upcoming Babycastles Manhattan space. In fact, I’ve been awarded the auspicious title of primary curator! Mostly due to my previous two attempts being so wildly successful and all (which is pretty much thanks to all you fine folks out there). Plus, I’ll be overseeing the retail end and helping out with PR as well. Though it’s not just me running the show, far from it; there’s a dedicated team of hard working and crazy passionate folks, all determined to show NYC what indie gaming is all about! We’ve got a TON of amazing things in the works (just thinking about some of what’s been discussed via email alone is seriously making my head spin), though we still need help. And that’s where you come in…

… Yup, we have a Kickstarter, to help raise money for vital essentials, such as technology and related tools, plus to ensure the space is properly staffed. So please, ANYTHING you can donate would be sincerely appreciated. Though, it being Kickstarter and all, we are able to provide some truly kick ass incentives, thanks to all our generous sponsors. Might I suggest the $200 donation level, aka the ABC No Rio of Video Games! Not only will you get a ton of cool video game zines, including ones from yours truly, but there’s also a framed and self-lit Pixelblock rendering of Jizzmakun, the hero from Jizzmoppa!

God, I really wish I could spill the beans re: some of the truly mind-blowing things we have on tap! Though much of it might not happen unless we get some help. I’m not joking when I say that, not only will your donation be going to an incredibly awesome cause, but you’ll be helping to make history. It’s been a long time coming, such a convergence of indie art, music, and most importantly, video games. In the Big Apple no less. Please make the dream a reality!

And then you have:

#2. Help Get My Ass To Texas So I Can Share My Wacky Dating Girls From The Internet Stories With A Room Full Of Tech Conference Attendees!

As also previously noted, I have a panel up for consideration at next year’s SXSW, and once again, everyone’s assistance is required to make it a reality…

… To recap: the panel will cover my glory days of girl hunting on the internet, circa 2000-2004, back when social network was still being established, and the net as a whole was far wilder and crazier than it is now (trust me, as wacky as stuff is today, things were on a whole different level back then). It’ll also cover how I basically had zero rap with chicks beforehand, and by talking to 36 different girls via instant message, all at the same time, I eventually developed one. Sorta. To read the fine print, simply click this link.

And yes, for those of you with good memories, I did ask the same thing last year, but that was to help a pal’s panel, which I was brought on board around the mid-point to help spice the planned presentation up and also get enough votes, since I happen to know tons of wonderfully giving friends, such as yourselves! Which btw worked, though I ended up not being involved in the final panel, for reasons that honestly are not that important right now. The only thing to remember is how this time, it’s all me! Plus, there’s the real reason why I want this to happen so badly…

Basically, for the longest time, I’ve been writing a book about my pioneer days in the world of internet romance, and I honestly believe that appearing at the grand stage that is SXSW will greatly increase the potential of a publishing deal. Hence why I’d be eternally grateful for anyone that takes the time and effort give my topic a thumbs up. Yes you have to register, but it?s fairly quick and painless; just sign up once, immediately cast your vote, and never worry about the site ever it again. And again, you’d be doing me another tremendous favor!

I?d be even more profoundly grateful of anyone that takes the extra step to help spread the word via Twitter/Facebook, bugging coworkers and friends, or just yelling on a street corner. Perhaps it’s a fool’s dream, but I honestly believe that if everyone reading this post casts a vote, the topic will go through and, fingers crossed, that book I?ve been waiting so long to pen will finally become a reality. But please vote as soon as humanly possible! The deadline for voting is this Friday, WHICH IS LESS THAN 48 HOURS FROM NOW!!!

From the bottom of my heart, thanks to everyone in advance (and especially those that have pitched in already) for helping to put indie game culture on the map in New York City and fueling my ego/land a book deal. It really means a lot; with your generosity, things can and will happen!

Something Big Is Happening

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

In this post:
1. My FORT90 X BABYCASTLES report!
2. And the rest of Phil Fish’s stay here in NYC!
3. Along with some odds and ends.

One week later, and the dust has finally settled. Also, the pictures finally came in! So time to file a report:

“The CBGB’s of video games” – Phil Fish

Last week’s shindig at Babycastles was, simply put, incredible. Absolutely incredible. No exaggeration; some amazing shit went down, and if you love video games and were not able to attend, then I am truly sorry. Thankfully a TON of folks did come out, despite the fact that… well, I’ll get to that in a bit.

Though not gonna lie; when I first set foot in the space around the 7:15 mark, with less than an hour to go till show time, I had a mild heart attack. Phil, who had arrived around 10pm the night prior (and who was up till 4am, due to me overloading his senses with the wonder that is New York City cable access), had been at Silent Barn a good couple of hours beforehand, yet they had only just managed to get Super Hypercube to up and running. Which meant most of the rest of the show had been untouched.

The worst was when Phil was testing out the homemade 3D goggles and let out a scream; due to some exposed wires he had burned himself. And immediately I began to fear the same thing happening later on, and that person not being able to brush it off as easily. But you know what they say: gaffers tape fixes everything.

Something I had completely forgotten amongst all the pre-show jitters: things are fairly fast and loose at Babycastles. Anyone familiar with the place knows already that, when they say DIY, they mean it. Folks began showing up at eight, on the spot, but thanks to some hustling and a large pile of spare parts, most of the show was up and running in time. Then more people showed up. Then more. And even more. After all was said and done, when things were at their most crowded, I’d say there was…. I shit you not… over a hundred people in attendance. Easily the biggest turnout yet for Babycastles!

As noted the day of, the invite list on Facebook had grown to such a degree that the party had to be moved from the basement to the upstairs. Which under normal circumstances I would have been ecstatic over, except for one thing; it was seriously the hottest, most humid day of the year up till point, no joke, and given how completely anemic the air conditioning is when there’s just a few folks in the space, I began to have visions of folks showing up and immediately going home. Yet they all came, and they all stayed. Nothing made me happier than to see EVERY game get heavy play. As if there was any need for doubt; every single title on hand was amazing. But still…

I knew Super Hypercube would get the most attention, since it was the star attraction and all. Also knew both ARTXGAMES would drop jaws, especially those belonging to fans of Cactus, since nothing else he’s ever done looks even close to how “untitled” resembles. Yet it made me so immensely pleased to witness the big crowds surrounding Rescue: The Beagles and everyone cheering on whomever that controlling the action that moment. A game that both myself and Dave were obsessed with upon its debut, but which went largely ignored, even by the indie game loving masses. Even Katawa Shoujo, which I knew would be the hardest sell (since it is a Japanese style dating sim, never mind the subject matter: trying to woo crippled girls), got plenty of love! Granted, having it on the same table as the bar helped considerably.

Things got disgustingly hot very early on; no joke, just an hour or two in and everyone looked as if they had jumped into and had just come out of a swimming pool. It was that gross. Early on, during set-up, Kunal made the decision to split things up and have Katawa Shoujo and “untitled” in the basement, where the refreshment was, and a part of me was afraid that everyone would be in one place and not the other. Didn’t happen. And people stuck around all night long, though mostly to hear glomag perform. Who fucking blew the roof off btw! Kunal also took the opportunity to formally announce Babycastles: Manhattan! Long story short: Kunal, Syed, myself, and others will be running a space in midtown between October and December. More news as things develop!

By now you might be asking where all the visual aides are, and there were plenty of pics taken! But you’ll have to wait for them to appear over at the Attract Mode blog, which will more than likely tomorrow, since at this very moment Adam is headed towards a midnight screening of Scott Pilgrim, and I still need the guy?s help posting stuff. Though here’s a small taste….

UPDATE: And they’re all up!

… Unfortunately, EarlMadness, my ace furry photographer, had left by the time many had made their way up on the roof, where folks had taken their clothes off to cool down in the kiddy pool. Which means no photographic evidence of Ramiro Corbetta (the creator of Glow Artisan, which co-headlined my zine party from a few months back) getting into a Greco-Roman wrestling match with another game designer, practically naked, in ankle high water. Bummer.

Easily the biggest highlight for me were all the faces that evening, many new and many familiar. It was quite the thrill seeing Kim, a former student of mine, interacting with Raina Lee, who has been a MAJOR inspiration to myself over the years. I’ll die happy if in the end, my zine comes within the 10% range of awesomeness that the 1Up MegaZine encapsulates. Speaking of, I was also touched that she had gone through the trouble (i..e. paid the big bucks) to change her flight just so she could spend the extra night to hit my party. It was really nice seeing a bunch of my non video game pals in attendance, like Joe Simko and June, and especially our pal Drew, whose basically the one person I’ve known the longest in NYC (I met him like the second day I had arrived). I had also given up ages ago trying to convince my non-gamer pals to check out a chiptune show with me, so I’m glad a few finally got some much needed exposure to Game Boy music at long last. Told Chris afterward that he should expect some new people at his shows from this point forward. Was also pleased as punch to finally meet Ryan, aka Lin Swimmer in the flesh! About God damn time. And of course, my lovely girlfriend was there the whole time, offering support as she always does.

There was this one the guy who had actually blown off Arcade Fire, who was also playing that evening, for my thing! Plus two others that had both blown off Scott Pilgrim the movie sneak previews, again, all for FORT90 X BABYCASTLES. Also met a woman (the gf of Andy, one of the dudes that contributed to my Persona art contest last year) who knew me from my mini comics! Had so much fun watching Joe Salina and Dave explain to her that every word is true cuz they’ve known me long enough to know that I am indeed a shit magnet.

But yeah, I was simply blown away by the immense outpour of support, for indie gaming and everything in general. Once again, I must say thanks from the bottom of my heart to everyone who made it out that night! It meant a lot to me. As it also did for Phil, whose efforts up north, via Gamma, was the direct inspiration for Kunal and Syed. He felt tremendously validated that evening, as he should. A few days later, I was back at Babycastles HQ, along with the rest of the gang who I’ve been meeting with for the past couple of weeks, to help plan out the Manhattan space. Since Phil was still in town, he was also in attendance, and mentioned how myself and the rest of the Babycastles crew were on the cusp of something… big. As it pertains to indie game, and perhaps much more! And I think he’s right.

Oh, also, he made note of how his recent exposure to Manhattan cable access might get him laid. Apparently all that he saw while staying over was of immense interest to this chick he was talking to on OKCupid!

Phil ended up crashing at my place for the rest of the weekend. With HARDCORE FEELINGS in the history books, it was finally time to unwind and show him a good time! Once I was done with work Friday afternoon (hate to complain, cuz I’m extremely appreciative to finally have a 9-to-5 job, benefits and all, but it could not have come at a worse time; got basically 30 minutes worth of sleep beforehand), I took Phil out to Brooklyn, to Dave’s kitchen to be exact, where Astro City awaited…

…. There you see Phil trying to beat the cat headed spider boss in Guwange. I also finally got the chance to give Ketsui for the Japanese 360 a spin. SO good.

Afterwards was dinner at Shake Shack, since Phil loves burgers so much (a fun fact that pretty much everyone on Kotaku knows already, lulz), followed by drinks at Hagi. For whatever reason, it was the very first time either Joe or Dave had heard of my plans for the “perfect pets”. And for those of you who don’t know already (I’ve mentioned it here at least once before, though ages ago): basically all future pet owners will have both a cat and a dog. Part of the package will be a silver bag whose contents must be mixed with water and feed to the dog. Who will then shit out a perfect cube that the cat will eat. Who will then shit out a perfect sphere that the dog will eat. And the process repeats itself. The end, and hello Nobel Peace Prize!

Pretty much all of Saturday was spent filling Phil’s brain with all the wacky media that I surround myself with. Introduced him to Karate Ruler, as well the Canzo Emperiyan. Best part was whenever I would tell him something particularly crazy, he’d immediately either do research on the matter himself (mostly of what I say seems too weird to be true… but usually is) or share it with the girl he was OKCupid chatting with. That evening, I went out to have dinner with Hilary, whom I hadn’t seen in a bit. Among other things, discovered that the best Japanese curry in Manhattan (at Typhoon Lounge) is sadly no longer the case, was introduced to seriously the best non-dairy/vegan ice cream I’ve ever had (I normally can’t stand the stuff), ran into a former colleague from my PixelJump days (ah, the days of cell phone game development, BEFORE the iPhone), and we both came across an abandoned eMac on the street, whose screen Hilary almost kicked in (as much of a fan as I was of Apple’s last CRT Mac, would have been cool to witness such destruction). Anyhow, after we parted ways… Hilary had to head home early to catch up on work… asked Phil if he wanted to come out and meet me downtown, to go on a pub crawl, but he insisted on staying in and watching even more cable access.

Which I was more than happy to oblige with; popped in some vintage stuff, circa 1999/2000, like old episodes of Zenbok, Damon Zex, Mad Dog, and Madam Chaos. Plus the Mark Birnbaum show, starring the world’s only Satanic ragtime piano player, far as I know. Also took the opportunity to check out a pair of tapes that Colleen had passed along; it was from a pile that the previous tenant of her place had left behind, and because it was mostly hentai, and the only inscription was in Japanese, we had all assumed it was porn of some kind. Sadly, it was nowhere as interesting. Anyhow, capped things of with the always popular Evil Video! K Thor really need to put volume 5 together.

The next day, Phil made his way onto the next couch and next leg of his NYC tour. Which was somewhere in Brooklyn, which I hate to say, but whose cable access can’t hope to compare to Manhattan’s. Anyhow, he’s back in Canada right now, though I’ll have another visitor soon enough; Mathew Kumar is slated to stay over sometime next week!

In Other News

Now that FORT90 X BABYCASTLES is finally over with, it’s been back to business as usual…

- For whatever reason, people are genuinely annoyed that I don’t game on a HD set. And once again, the reason why I prefer a standard definition set is simple: doesn’t make my Saturn or Dreamcast games look like ass. I don’t even want to know how horrible my old cable access VHS tapes would appear on a “modern” display. Though it would seem that the time to find out is finally here; I think my set is dying. I ask the following literally once every 6 months, but this time it’s for real: any recommendations towards what flat screen handle legacy hardware would be greatly appreciated. And despite the prospect of old favorites looking like crap, I’m also really looking forward to playing today’s offerings and finally being able to read the text.

- As for any notable games I’ve played recently, two titles in particular stand out, but can’t really talk about them due to a variety of reasons (plus there’s a third that I was able to also check out, that those who can add 1 +2 might be able to figure out), I can at least mention Dragon Quest 9. Which is pretty swell, but I can already feel myself fading. Need to get in some multiplayer action ASAP. And no, have not checked out the demo from PSN. Odd I realize, considering how Adam and I was the first to introduce to the world (outside of PAX East that is) of what it looked like! Just been too damn busy.

- Speaking of Scott Pilgrim, by tomorrow I should be done with the final chapter of the comic and ready to see the movie. Which I’ll also be reviewing for GameSetWatch! Followed by a small flurry of other game specific film reviews that I’ve been sitting on top of for way too long. Also coming soon, for GSW as well, will be the first installment of my semi-regular video game and performance art column! Plus I’ll be back writing for another outlet that I used to be a regular for; more on that when it finally gets underway.

- At long last, received word that I have two confirmed slots for the upcoming New York Comic Con/Anime Fest! So if you or anyone you know is interested in a career in the game industry, and would like to learn more from a panel of working professionals (hand picked by yours truly of course), then be sure to check out How To Get A Job In Video Games. Plus you also have The Best Games From Japan That You’ve Never Heard Of, which will star myself, Joe, and Dave! Not only are both dudes super keen on the import gaming scene, they’re also headed towards Japan early next month, for Blip Fest Tokyo. Before they leave, I’m giving them each $100 to blow on “something wacky” in Akihabara; stop on by to discover what they bring back!

Unfortunately, my immensely popular (if I don’t say so myself) Top Ten Best And Worst Games Of All Time presentation was not given the green-light this year, which is a bit of a bummer, cuz most of my pals were not able to witness it last time. Though I totally understand the organizers not wanting too much repeat programming, plus it’s gonna take a LOT to top myself anyway. At least both Katie and Hilary got to see me yuck it up on stage in front of a packed house of howling animu dorks (which again was a way to redeem myself in their eyes, over the atrocity that was my appearance at ICON earlier that year).

- Back to the land of soul cancer: guess what finally arrived?

… Worth every damn penny to boot. Pictures really do no justice. And here’s the thing: I have two of them! One is still in the box. Never mind the reason why, just know that she’s up for sale. Selling her for what I paid for, which is $90 plus shipping. Any takers?

- Meanwhile, not only does my girlfriend have a brand spanking, newly designed website, she just did this…

… For some kind of Katamari art show! But also, this finally went on sale, over at you know where

… Along with a bunch of new items! With more to come; Adam will be making the big announcement once everything is up. And yes, very soon, everyone will have the chance to pick up the third FORT90ZINE (once again, it’s simply titled: THREE). Just got an email from a person at a MAJOR game studio (who shall remain anonymous) asking for a status update! Oh, and I forgot to mention another highlight from the Babycastle event; they managed to sell three copies, which is part of the “Babycastles pawn shop”! I gave Kunal and Syed ten copies at the launch party, and they had been just sorta sitting there the whole time (since most folks don’t really buy things like that there, though they hope to change that).

Thing is, they’re only selling each issue for $5, which is 50% lower than the cover price. Which I would normally be upset by, but they’re first run edition, which is horribly riddle with a ridiculous degree of typos and the such. On the plus side, that simply makes them collector’s items!

- And back to public engagements, like so many others, I have a SXSW panel that’s up for consideration! Again, I’d like to share my dating horror stories with a bunch of dorks at a tech conference in Texas. And I know this was asked once before, but things are a bit different this time around; instead of helping out on a friend’s presentation, it’ll be all me! I’m running the show solo, and trust me when I say that I have plenty of stories from my makeoutclub days to share.

You know the drill; it would be supremely appreciated if everyone could please go through the hassle of registration and give it a thumbs up. It’s quick and easy! But please remember to do so before the deadline, which is only two weeks from now, August 27th. And I’d be doubly grateful if you could please spread the word via Twitter and Facebook!

… I know I’ve said this before, but I’ve never been so busy, but I’ve also never been do excited for the future. A LOT of awesome things are in the works, some of which will be revealed very soon! As they say in Rez, stay alert.

Get Ready To… HYPERCUBE!!!

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

So tonight’s the big night! FORT90 X BABYCASTLES finally goes down. Needless to say, myself and everyone else involved behind the scenes are beyond psyched. Gonna be HUGE, that much is certain. Case in point: the show has been moved upstairs, due to the fact that the Facebook RSVP list has officially exceed the number of people the basement area can hold. Which might be the first time ever such a change in plans has ever been made!

Which is both good and bad; there’ll will plenty of room to play games and mill about, the acoustics are far better suited for a live performance, plus I just love the main space in general. Though the air conditioning is… somewhat nonexistent I’m afraid. Then again, it’s not a happening party, especially when in the middle of summer in NYC, unless you sweat your ass off, right?

Oh, also, just found out that my DJ for the evening, dmauro, is gonna be showing up late, cuz he’s catching the Scott Pilgrim movie beforehand. lol… but hey, he’s passing along his iPod for his absence, and it’s not like I can be upset at the guy, since he did produce that totally hawt show flyer.

Anyhow, the past week has been pretty much dedicated towards applying the finishing touches. Since I’m a noob when it comes to all things related to XP, Kunal, Syed, Joe, and the rest of the Babycastles crew have been the ones dealing with the actual hard work of putting tech together. Though I’ve still been doing my part, mostly on the promotional end; went all over the city this past weekend, putting up flyers at places where all the cool kids congregate. You know, like Giant Robot, Toy Tokyo, Forbidden Planet, Jim Hanley’s. Hopefully some of folks have seen at least one of them! Meanwhile, Kunal and Syed took care of Brooklyn in proper fashion, of course.

I’ve also been busying reaching out to folks via online, though I’ve seriously been blown away by all the voluntary shout outs from friends and colleges alike. Here’s just a small taste of all the AWESOME attention that the show has garnered, from…

- Tiny Cartridge
- GameSetWatch
- Bytejacker
- TIGSource
- NYC Game Industry
- NYU Game Center
- the Same Hat Tumblr
- Brandon Boyer’s Tumblr

… Plus there’s everyone on Facebook and Twitter, like from good pals Dave Roman and Steve Totilo… and so many more, too many to properly list! So I seriously need to thank everyone out there from the bottom of my heart for such much support and enthusiasm and support. It means a ton to me.

Otherwise, not much to report. Had to blow off Pulsewave this past Saturday night, which sucked cuz it was the special 21st birthday celebration for the Game Boy (still haven’t checked to see how the advertised Game Boy cupcakes turned out), again due to planning and promotions. Though I was able to spare an evening to see Heather and the rest of the her Midnight Show crew perform at the UCB last Thursday! Here we are at the bar afterwards…

Oh, and another fond friend from Cali came was came to town a few days ago! Fellow zinester Raina Lee, creator of the Citizen Kane of video game zines…

… Here we are having an underwhelming Japanese curry lunch in Billyburg. And sorry for all the gratuitous pics of me with women folks. Rest assured, after tonight, there’s gonna be plenty of pics of me with sweaty dudes!

Oh, real quick: as everyone knows, glomag will be the special musical guest for tonight. As some folks also know, I recently began writing for EGM’s digital format. Well my chiptunes piece, which I actually wrote a little while ago, was finally published this morning, and it stars Chris Burke himself!

… I’m hoping it’ll be a big enough hit for other game culture related piece to be greenlit, perhaps for the print version one of these days!

And finally, my very first blog post for Attract Mode made its way up, and surprise, it’s pertains to tonight’s festivities. For those who still don’t know what the heck Babycastles is and why it’s so rad, well, here’s my reasons.

K, that’s it! Can’t wait to rock out and finally relax the rest of this weekend. Phil Fish came into town last week, and already got a proper dose of the splendors of New York City cable access, but there’s much else to do. And perhaps you all can help him show a good time tonight? Later folks!
