Some folks have been wondering what the heck has been going on and where the hell I’ve been. Primarily this past weekend, in which I had a number of social engagements lined up, and all of which I ended up no-showing. Well, with the exception of a Friday night filled with booze, burritos, and EVA 2.22 with Hilary, I’ve been pretty much holed up in my very own fortress of solitude. With Katie out of town, in Pittsburg for a comic show, I decided to revert back to single male mode, to an almost exaggerated degree: playing video games and watching movies till 7 AM, sleeping in till four the following the afternoon, not bothering to take a shower for multiple days in a row, and surviving entirely on a diet consisting of take out (with the deliverymen being my one form of human contact the entire time).

The reason? The past couple of weeks have been rather trying, with the grand culmination taking place the weekend prior. And one significant portion of it, at the New York Comic Con to be exact, did not go nearly as planned (perhaps some of you already know the details). Which meant some time to lick one’s wounds was well in order, but I immediately had to jump headfirst back into the thick of things the following Monday, which made my brain melt even more so. Hence the need, somewhat, to cut myself from the rest of the world, at least a little bit.

Now, I’ve always prided myself in being able to wear multiple hats, but everyone has their limits. And as the saying goes, it’s either feast or famine; the greater part of this year had been an endless struggle to find paid writing gigs. It’s no big secret that the job market in general rather abysmal, and times that by fifty if you’re a video game journalist. Yet next thing you know, in just a few short couple of weeks, I had work come at me at every conceivable angle! Which would have been awesome if not for the fact that I had suddenly gotten a new fulltime gig during that same timeframe, plus am now heavily involved in about twenty different endeavors, including Babycastles, Attract Mode, among others. Though not wanting to pass up a chance to pad out the bank account, I pretty much said yes to every offer that came my way. Which proved to be a HUGE mistake.

Long story short, it wasn’t long before I became completely burnt out. And for the first time ever, I’ve actually turned down good playing freelance gigs due to the recent epiphany that I’m officially way in over my head. Which culminated on Friday, when I had to face facts and send an embarrassing email to a client that had been waiting forever for me to deliver on something that was simply never going to come. BTW, I?m fully aware of how self-indulgent (and vaguely emo-ish) this post has been thus far. And I haven’t even gotten to the real good stuff! Sorry, but sorta need to get it out of my system.

Anyway, after laying dormant and recharging my batteries, and figuring out a new plan of attack of sorts, I’m actually ready to face the next couple of weeks. Which I had lost much enthusiasm for as silly as it sounds now, but thankfully I have some fine friends to help remind me of all the awesomeness that lies ahead! The number one thing on my agenda is getting ready for the latest show I’ll be curating. All I can say is, if you thought FORT90 X BABYCASTLES was epic, then get ready for (tentatively titled) ATTRACT MODE X BABYCASTLES!!! Save the date everyone: it opens Thursday evening, November 4th.

Though I’m also trying my best to play catch-up, and be mindful once more of the things that have unfortunately fallen by the way side. Like this blog for example, which doesn’t get nearly as much love these days. Speaking of, guess my NYCC report is overdue, yet I’m still waiting for one of my correspondents to file her diary comic, so how about highlights from the Babycastles Manhattan opening night shindig, which also went down that same weekend?

What you said before you is the very first exhibition, appropriated entitled WELCOME TO BABYCASTLES, which dips into the already rich history of past shows, for a taste of things to come for unsuspecting Manhattan-ites. Unfortunately, I was there for a grand total of five minutes; has been at the day one of the NYCC immediately beforehand, and had to make my way to Brooklyn for a Swans show later that night. But I was told that everyone had an amazing time, and the pictures certainly prove this. Most of the following (except for two from myself) are by Earl Z Madness (naturally)…

…. I won’t bore everyone with the details, other than to say that it’s still up this very second; most shows are only scheduled to be up for ten days, but this one is going a hair bit longer. Though the next event is this Friday, so I urge everyone to stop on by if they can! Though the next one will be just as amazing. For more information, be sure to hit the Babycastles website. And be sure to come back tomorrow (EDIT: actually, the day after; just realized that Babycastles pre-planning is gonna take up much of my free-time, sorry!) for the first bit of my New York Comic Con report.

Oh man, it’s finally here: the big weekend. Tomorrow alone is gonna be pretty damn epic: A. go to my jobby-job in the morning (btw, have I ever mentioned what my new day gig is? it’s nothing special really, just copywriter for an Orthodox Jewish video game accessory company in Williamsburg… see, hardly worth fussing about), B. head directly to the NYCC immediately afterwards, C. a few hours later, join up with Katie and some other friends in Fort Greene to catch a Swans show, and D. if there’s any time left over, check out the tail end of the Babycastles Manhattan opening night party!

Which leaves me barely enough time to finish up my presentation for Saturday night at the con; taking a break from it this second, which is also why I’m not at Capcom’s Street Fight(er) Club 3 this very second… or at least I heard on the grapevine it’s going on now (been too way too busy to follow-up). Hence why I’d better keep this post short and sweet! So from the very top…

The Arcade Reborn In Times Square

And back to Babycastles; for those who haven’t heard, we more than met our goal of $6,000 by reaching a hair past the $9,000 mark! Thanks to all your help of course…

This past Monday was day one at the new space. Here’s some pics from that evening…

And here’s how it was shaping up by Wednesday, day three….

BTW, be sure to check out the article on Babycastles in the latest installment of EGMi, featuring pics from the THREE: FORT90ZINE release party this past May and FORT90 X BABYCASTLES from this past August!

The MTA Still Sucks, Rock Band 3 Is Hawt, & The New Metroid Is Okay, I Guess

Guess I’m mostly determined to be at the Manhattan space tomorrow night due to the fact that I couldn’t make it out to the last shindig, the big pre-Chashama party at Silent Barn this past Saturday, featuring The Copenhagen Game Collective. And that’s cuz the subways were completely fucked up. There were literally no trains going to that part of Brooklyn! And I can’t believe they just raised the fare, AGAIN.

Have I mentioned how much bloody worse mass transit in NYC has gotten? Now MTA goons are flat-out antagonizing riders, to the point that they almost want to get punched in the face, so they can go on their two month long (minimum) paid vacation. Remember last time, when I went out to Greenpoint to catch Chikara Pro with Steve Totilo? Well I arrived late to of course, cuz the L train was just sitting there in the 8th Ave state in Manhattan for a good solid 15 minutes. Since no one had any idea what the hell was going on, since the conductor was far too busy chatting it up with friends on the platform (two booth attendants I believe from the looks of it) to make any sort of announcement,, decided to interrupt and ask what the deal was. Which the aforementioned pals did not like, and answered for the guy with: “The trains is not fucking moving anywhere; YOU’RE not fucking moving anywhere!”

When I became justifiably annoyed with being cursed at for absolutely no good reason by his cohorts, the conductor immediately got in my face with the “I don’t need your attitude; I will call the copes to have you removed from the station by force if you don’t get out of my face.” Mind you, he was the one who had gotten out of his conductor’s station to confront me and grandstand, to then make it seem like I was the reason for the delay. When it finally dawned on me the perfect solution to put such assholes in their place: take a picture. Oh God, they HATE that! Unfortunately it came out super blurry, but that’s definitely what I’ll be doing from this point forward (with my back up camera, which I won’t be too upset with it when it’s knocked out of my hands, onto the train tracks). Which I’ll then compile for a Tumblr or something (alongside my way over due cable access on).

But yeah, was not able to make it out to Babycastles Queens this past Saturday, so instead, it was just the Clock Blocks release party, where I made some new pals! Creighton and Caldwell from CollegeHumor to be exact! Who will be filming my big Saturday night presentation at the NYCC?!?! But yeah, the highlight of that evening… other than waiting forever for a M train that would never arrived (to compensate for the L not running), and being told by another MTA asshole that I had to take the F (many of which I had let pass by, due to being completely unaware of how I supposed to get on) to the J and then to the M, which was only running in Brooklyn for whatever retarded reason, and like I was complete idiot for not knowing all this (despite the fact that there were ZERO signage to inform riders of this service change, and trust me, I was far from the only one who was in the same exact position), which was when I officially threw in the towel and took another super expensive cab ride home… was hanging out at an iPhone game release party, surrounded by dudes as they played another game on my own device, the now banned from the App Store Suicide Girls dating sim.

Sucks that Gabe couldn’t come out this past Tuesday for the Rock Band 3 bar night-thing. Am still looking for pics of myself, Creighton, and Caldwell, all jamming to Crazy Train (one dude kept taking pics, mostly since I was channeling Ozzy?s mannerisms on stage in an uncanny fashion). At least I have one of my two new College Humor buddies expressing their excitement over the new pro-guitar that’s been built for the new game with Mariana from MTV Games; sadly you can?t see any of its 47+ buttons…

As for what I’ve been playing… to be honest… been way too busy to really dig deep into anything! Though there is Metroid: Other M. And like so many others, absolutely love how the game plays, absolutely hate what they’ve done with Samus herself. Isn’t it nice how everything is genderized in that game? I actually do appreciate the attempt at adding some depth to her character, it’s a risky and bold step forward (though keeping her silent and all bad ass would not have been the worst idea in retrospect), but making her a whiney, insecure girl deep down inside was not the best possible route. Though sexist characterization in a Team Ninja game? Who woulda thunk it!

No More Mister Nice Guy

Back to the weekend, the MTA wasn’t the only thing that left a bad taste in my mouth. My fellow New Yorkers haven’t been much help either.

On Friday night, the gf and I went to see the new 3D Resident Evil movie (lots of fun btw, and hey, Milla clones, can’t go wrong with that) and immediately afterwards Katie recovered a lost cell phone. It was the folks who sat immediately next to us, and I sorta remembered who they were (cuz they arrived late, and there’s nothing more annoying that folks getting in the way during a 3D flick). Katie suggested that we deposit at the box office, but I remember hearing from friends who worked in theaters how the lost in found there is basically a grab bag for free stuff among employees, and was hoping to magically run into them in the crowded lobby. Which is what happened! Was able to present the lost phone (a fairly brand new, and pricy looking Blackberry no less) to its original owner. And the dude just looked at me, all surly and annoyed. It was his wife who had to force a thank you out of him. WTF.

This is actually the second time such nonsense has gone down. Right before Travis’s birthday gathering, I found a purse on the street, and went through it only to see if there was any contact info. Which there was; a stack of business cards. When I called the woman, the following conversation went down:

me: “Hello?”

woman who lost her purse: “Who is this?”

me: “Hi, my name is Matt, and I just found your purse.”

woman who lost her purse: “How did you get this number?”

me: “Well, like I said, you lost your purse and I found your nu…”

woman who lost her purse: “No I didn’t.”

me: “Excuse me?”

woman who lost her purse: “I didn’t lose my purse.”

me: “Well you did, I have it right here.”

woman who lost her purse: “But no I didn’t it.”

me: “How else could I have gotten your number? Listen, I’m right in front off…”

woman who lost her purse: “But I DIDN’T LOSE MY PURSE!”

me: “Lady, would you just check and see if you have it or not?”

woman who lost her purse: “I DIDN’T LOSE MY… oh wait.”

When she came to pick it up, she had a friend with her, who gave just flat out said “Check to see if he took anything” right in my face. And it was only then that I knew how much money was inside… easily $400 in twenties. Which I should have pocketed, because this lady was, just like the guy after here, completely unappreciative and even annoyed. I dunno; if a complete stranger had taken the time to track me down and recover either my wallet or cell phone, I’d at the very least thank that person profusely. So from this point forward, I’m taking Katie’s advice: holding on that shit for ransom.

Unicorn Forum?

At least the weekend ended on a high note; Katie and I finally made it out to the local renaissance fair! We live near the Cloisters, and they hold one ever fall, but we’ve always missed out. Till now…

… We were both blown away by how many people there were! Tons of folks in medieval garb. Yet no one in Starfleet uniforms. Sad…

… Seeing someone dressed up as Harry Potter at such affairs seems hardly special, but when said person is an old woman? Didn’t think so…

… Katie up close, admiring the woman’s Sailor Moon backpack…

… And never mind those two older dudes from before hitting each other; the real down and dirty action was the kids’ pit…

… This guy was super cool…

… And this guy… he does a web comic! Shocking, I know…

Even more good news from that day; finally did some long overdue cleaning and organizing around the apartment, and recovered this…

Both Katie and I thought we had lost it!

The Hectic World Of Comics In NYC

But time for some bad news; recently found out about Forbidden Planet’s decision to get rid of their mini comics and zine section. Such a shame; I’ve gotten SO much positive feedback from folks who stumbled across the FORT90ZINE from that place alone. Once again, case in point. Have yet to go to the store and see if it’s still there or not (just been too damn busy). Funny thing is how I still owe them come copies of UNLUCKY, which I had assumed they were no longer interested in, but was told by my mini comics agent (yes, such a person exists) has advised me to full-fill my order still. This and the recent loss of Rocketship, has not been good for local small/independent press people.

At least there’s that big upcoming zine show in Brooklyn later this year! Which is invite only. And I wasn’t invited. lulz. But there’s also… believe it or not… Babycastles! Though I’ll talk about what I have brewing on that end when the time is right.

… Cuz right now, I just want to remind everyone that the New York Comic Con/Anime Fest is happening THIS WEEKEND! Though a reminder might not be necessary; I can’t recall a time in which so many out of town pals, primarily comics peeps, have been converging. It would seem the show has finally arrived! Anyhow, and once more, I have two things running this weekend:

The first is The Best (And Worst) Games From Japan That You’ve Never Heard Of going down this Saturday night at 7:45, in Panel Room 3! And as noted previously, I’ll be joined by my two pals dmauro and Isfet. Those who have seen my presentations in the past will know what to expect! Was assuming a packed house, it being Saturday night and all, though now that I discovered that I’ll be going head to head with a Square Enix panel, not so sure anymore!

And the second is How To Get A Job In Video Games the very next day, Sunday morning at 10:45, in Panel Room 4! Much like last year, I’ve assembled a bunch of friends, all quite active in the game industry today but on different ends, to talk about their professions for those who wish to get in the field. Included will be artist Allan Norico, designer (as well as EIC of the NYC Game Industry) Brandon Van Slyke, producer and publisher (as well ad designer himself) Dave Gilbert, plus journalists Tracey John and Anthony John Agnello!

And of course, expect another photo-filled con report sometime afterwards, filled with all usual hijinks. Plans thus far calls for a repeat visit to Chipotle with Hilary and myself for some margaritas, followed by posing in pics with goofy cosplayers! Though I believe more on the “correspondent” tip this time, primarily through Mallory and Mia? Shall be a memorable weekend indeed…

One more time and don’t forget: both the Manhattan space opening tonight (the event is officially called Babycastles: A Retrospective and the location will be hence forth be officially referred to as The Showpaper 42nd St Gallery; event details can be found on the website and Facebook) plus the New York Comic Con all this weekend. Hope to see you all later this weekend, at one place or the other. Hopefully both!

Hope everyone enjoyed all the pics from PAX Prime (which can be caught here and here btw)! Cuz there’s plenty more to come, this time from…

SPX 2010

So, the question is posed again: how was it? Pretty decent, all things considered. After skipping out on last year’s shindig, Katie and I were eager to get back in the swing of things. Though I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I had butterflies in my stomach leading up. In the end, I blame Etsy; SPX (along with MoCCA) used to be the place for handcrafted, DIY goods, like screen-printed shirts, silkscreened prints, and the such. All of which has since become scarce, thanks to the aforementioned website (same could be said for NYC’s small press show as well). Attract Mode’s offerings, which was somewhat of a throwback in that regard, would either stick out in a good way or bad. Never-mind how we’re also talking about video game oriented goods; there’s a definite crossover, indie comics & indie gaming, but it’s not as wide as mainstream comics & mainstream games. Not helping much was the email that everyone got a few months prior that stated “Listen, this is a comic show ultimately, so we had better see comics from each of you vendors.” A sentiment that I could certainly appreciate, yet also fond… unnecessary? Why not let the audience decide who is fit or not?

In the end, I was mostly interested in hanging with friends that I rarely get to see (namely, Pat, Ed, and Lamar) and maybe make some new acquaintances. So mission accomplished on both fronts! BTW, don’t expect nearly as many pictures here as in my PAX breakdown; the camera I had, coupled with the yellow-ish walls plus not exactly dark, yet not quite bright either lighting that made up most of that weekend, left most pics a mess. Still, this one of myself and the gf came out alright…

… Not only did Katie have one new issue of Nurse Nurse to promote, but two! And if you want to get technical, since we were again absent at SPX 2009, this year saw three brand spanking new issues starring Genma. As for myself, THREE made its first appearance at the same show where I first debuted the FORT90ZINE period. Plus SPX is where I first sold my very own comic, aka #1 of UNLUCKY, hence why I have such fondness for the show. Which I was positively shocked to hear people bring up. All I can say is, for the time being, the project is on-hold. But it’s not dead! Yet.

Oh, so one of the highlights of SPX was most definitely this person…

… Her name was Michele and she mentioned how she had stumbled across my second zine in the jungle that is the mini comics and zine section at Forbidden Planet. Michel said some of the nicest, most sweetest things ever, it seriously blew me away! I always love hearing from folks who are happy that someone else has such fond memories of the game scene that once was and took the time to actually make an account of it. Anyhow, as we spoke, she casually made mention of how awesome it was that we both shared the same friends, specifically “Dave and Hilary.” So all of a sudden it hit me, and I asked, “Excuse me… Michela? Are you otherwise known as Hamlet Machine?” And indeed it was! Was also a thrill to tell her how much I enjoy her comic (even though yaoi and dudes kissing each other in general is totally not my thing, the story and art are simply top notch) and how much I talk it up with folks (who ended up feeling the same exact way). And pretty much anyone who meets her agrees that she’s the nicest, the most gentlest soul ever. One who also happens to draw comics about dudes biting each other’s penises in space.

UPDATE: Once again, easily the nicest, sweetest person ever!

Another reason for the relative lack of pics was how I was actually way too busy to explore! Business was good, far better to a certain degree than PAX, believe it or not. So next thing you know, day one was done and over with. Here I am striking a pose with Colleen, post day one, on our way back to our hotel rooms…

Like I said, taking pictures in that space was a real pain in the ass, at least sans flash, so we had to hold poses while Katie attempted retake after retake. Which I’m guessing with a bit uncomfortable for some…

BTW, check out Travis….

Afterwards was dinner at Arby’s, which was awesome (also had lunch at Arby’s earlier that day, cuz, you know, Arby’s is once again awesome). Then it was off to the Ignatz; truth be told, since both Lamar and myself are so out of the loop, we were far too engrossed in Dragon Quest 9 to pay too much attention (though congrats to the winners and all that jazz). Sucks that he didn’t do his Kanye West shtick for the whole room (and too bad I can’t say “I wish he had said such-and-such had the best mini comic, again due to not being so tied into the indie comics world as of late)…

The ceremony was immediately followed by the usual hunt for the dude with all the drink tickets and contemplating all the fun that one could have with the chocolate fondue fountain. I totally would have tried to dip one of the sliders in the coco fountain (and then attempted to digest it) if not for the fact that I was way too full from Arby’s. Anyway, me with Chris Duffy, who looks like this only 36% of the time…

For whatever reason, Colleen was hiding in the palm tree, from someone, something…

Here’s Pat and Travis, talkin’ comics (I’m guessing). As Katie sez: “check out Pat’s lazer gaze”

The night as a whole was a blur. I recall watching Lamar and Mar? (who made it out to the east coast, specifically for his first taste of the show, and I was super happy to see him two weekends in a row) go at it via dueling drawings of Vegeta. Also, almost fell down a flight of stairs and breaking a leg cuz I stepped on some dude’s haphazardly placed pair of crutches.

Onto day two: while waiting for folks to accompany us for breakfast, we discovered the hotel lobby PCs had zero restrictions whatsoever (usually you can only go to MSN, Yahoo, or Gmail). Which Katie was more than happy to take advantage of…

… Breakfast was at the dinner btw, and NOT Arby’s. Only cuz it wasn’t open by then! I forget where I got lunch; I think it was Arby’s again, no joke.

Anyway, decided to finally do a little walking around on day two. First stop, the Comics Bakery of course; here’s Raina and Dave

Right next door was Travis and Toby

Here’s Nate Powell totally loving his cinnamon roll….

Yo Gia-Bao Tran in da house!

The always dapper Mr. Piskor…

John and Jen (as you can, at this point I said “fuck it” and decided to use the flash, red eyes be damned)…

Here’s Sally Bloodbath, who was right next to us. Whereas I barely left the table, she was behind hers maybe 5 minutes for the entire weekend. Which sucked cuz she’s a blast to be around!

Though I’m super glad I made it to the Ad House table, where Lamar was stationed. He had various drawings, including this famous image from Ninja Gaiden 2….

… Did I pick it up? Does the Pope crap in the woods? And this is easily the best picture I have ever taken of Katie…

And next thing you know, SPX 2010 was in the history books. Overall a fun show! My chief complaint is that it just seemed to go by so fast; didn’t get a chance to hang and band with nearly as many folks as I had hoped. Though everyone was ultimately way busy, doing their things; from what I gathered, at least from my pals at least, business was great all around, which is obviously great news for the normally volatile world of small press. Best of all, there was none of drama that I was expecting, which was unfortunately one of the reasons why we didn’t go last year. But we soon realized that haters gonna hate, and no need to let them rain on our parade. So expect Katie and I next year!

What SPX wrap-up would be complete without a look at the haul? Which keeps getting smaller and smaller…

… I guess the real stand-out would have to be Bear Fight, an anthology that’s all about bears! Speaking of which, really need to find out if Bear Bear 2 ever got produced. But regarding why this year’s assortment is so tiny; again, not enough time to look around, plus the knowledge that I have about seven Container Store bins filled with comics from past shows that I have yet to touch. First and foremost, I really need to get organized, cuz I’m no longer making the mistake of buying the same book (as awesome as it might be) for the second or third time.

And The Rest Of September

May as well pass along pics from the rest of this past month. Why the hell not, right? Let’s kick things off with… and speaking of kick, as in Kickstarter… you guys did hear that Babycastles Manhattan met its fund raising goal, right? But once again, we still need help!!! Though also again, there’s still plenty of awesome incentives still up for grabs, like the signed copies of Katamari from the creator himself! And here’s everyone’s first look at such awesomeness; I was there when Kunal picked them up from a pal of his who just came back from Japan. Isn’t it beautiful?

Some might also recall an image of me posing with a pair of masked Mexican wrestlers. Here’s a few more from that same affair, which again was a celebration of the upcoming Lucha Libre game, along with the 200 year anniversary of the Mexico’s independence…

… The all-Mexican spread was, not surprisingly, quite amazing. And I made two new friends to boot; a dude that acted as video editor and his girlfriend who apparently helps run a coffee shop in Williamsburg…

… Though the ones that had the most fun were most definitely El Elegido and La Parka…

Here’s La Parka beforehand, watching the behind the scenes short for the game. As Katie sez: “Anything La Parka does is funny!”

As for the game itself?

… It’s not half bad! A fairly strong effort for a bunch of first timers. Also, enthusiasm counts for a lot in my book, and you can tell that everyone involved absolutely loves lucha to death. It’s actually quite the historic release as well; the game marks the very first mainstream release from Central and South America. Previously, any games to come from those regions (and make no mistake, gaming is BIG down there), it’s always been rom hacks or freeware titles at best. Though it should be noted that I’m fairly biased; I love Mexican wrestling, to a blind degree, and therefore had more than enough fun just mashing buttons. How it all comes together as a complete package is what’s ultimately most important, and the jury is still out on that one. I’m just glad there’s an alternative to the beyond tired Raw Vs. Smackdown offerings we get year after year (and now more than ever I’m bummed by the recent draught in Japanese wrestling games; still not sure what the exact reason for that might be).

The following Friday was Travis’s birthday, which went down at Barcade, a place that everyone knows I love to make fun of, including the birthday boy! Bottom-line: it has a nice selection of old games, along with a decent selection of beer, and provided you’re in and out before the annoying drunken hipster rush around 1am, it’s not a half bad place. Plus any place is all right with the right group of friends. Unfortunately, Katie wasn’t feeling so hot so we couldn’t stay long, and I therefore wasn’t able to snap too many pics; was hoping to get some of Colleen rocking Crystal Castles! Instead, here’s a fairly crappy Super Pac-Man clone (yeah, I know) that Katie gave a spin…

… At least the accompanying artwork was rather keen. And that following Sunday was a Chikara show with Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo! Their first NYC show proper, in Brooklyn. We had both gotten our first taste of the promotion at the Dragon Gate USA show last summer, and even though he was less than impressed by their performance (he’s not into the Mexican style), Steve was still up for seeing the total package. The verdict? It was alright. There was just a bunch of minor issues which I guess one should come to expect with any indie show (wasn’t as rough as your average WUW show at the very least). Again, perhaps its my bias, or maybe because it’s simply exotic, but I’m far more forgiving when in Mexico they execute one powerhouse move after another, stuff that should logically end a match, yet does not, to the point that nothing makes sense. Though the star attraction, the main event, more than made up for any deficiencies. It was the United States debut of Manami Toyota, widely acknowledged as the greatest female wrestler in the entire world…

… Despite pushing 40, she sure as hell lived up to her legendary status. The power of pro wrestling is watching a five foot something Japanese woman beat up a close to seven foot musclebound dude and have it seem completely plausible. And it totally was. Here’s part one and part two of a match of hers, circa the early 90s, which many agree is one of the best female wrestling matches of all time. Even if you could give a rat’s ass about wraslin’, I implore everyone to give it a whirl (especially those that love to see chicks kick legitimate ass).

From pics featuring pro wrestling, to someone playing an arcade game, the cycle repeats: last week was Hilary‘s belated birthday dinner and drink-fest, which primarily consisted of sake (of course). Afterwards we got hit with the drunk munchies and made our way to Crif Dogs; aside from making fun of the douchebags that showed up for the “hidden bar” inside, we decided to play a few rounds Double Dragon (they have an old arcade cab of it, and more like Hilary wanted to play and demanded that I join in)…

… Pro-tip, don’t bother: you can’t go down with the player one stick, and I forget Hilary’s issue was, but that side is busted too.

I guess that’s it? Next time I’m gonna try to address all the stuff that’s been going on in the world of gaming, since it’s been way too long! First and foremost, will explain why I believe Tetsuya Mizuguchi is starting to remind me of Stephen Spielberg. You know, how basically Rez is to Child of Eden as Jaws is to Schindler’s List. Though (and this is reminder), the grand opening of Babycastles Manhattan is just around the corner, as is the New York Comic Con where I’ll be presenting! October is going be the craziest month eva…
