RIP GSW, 2005-2011

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

After six solid years as the king of the alt.gaming blogs, the plug was pulled on GameSetWatch earlier this evening

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: GSW is (well, was) the best pound for pound source for off the beaten path gaming news and nonsense out there, and I’m intensely proud to have been associated for as long as I have.

I forget how it all came to be; I think it was just Simon trying to find some other use for me. After attracting his attention on NeoGAF (back when it was still just the Gaming Age Forums, and was where I got most of my earliest writing gigs, FYI), which somehow led to me interviewing Jake Kazdal (back when his only claim to fame was being the only white person to work on Rez), that in turn paved the way to a semi-regular gig at Gamasutra (I also lent assistance at the Internet Archive‘s game section, which he oversaw at the time), I was eventually enlisted to help with his latest pet project.

Though before that, and even during, I was often included in his daily deluge of gaming link round-ups. At least in one case, I was actually the primary subject; I’m still quite tickled pink by how Simon used to refer to me as the Harvey Pekar of video game journalism! Anyhow, one of the very first things I wrote for GSW is something that I’m still extremely proud of, mostly since it directly led me to bigger and better things, both professionally and personally: the first version of my gamer’s side to New York City.

That, along with my yearly Blip Fest reports (here’s part two of my all-time personal fave Blip, in case anyone’s interested), set me on the path of becoming very much involved with the local game culture. Like organizing and overseeing a number of indie gaming celebrations throughout the city all last year, as well as the very formation of my self published zine (where the aforementioned special report was resurrected and refined for the printed page).

Eventually I got my own semi-regular slice of the GSW pie, where I reviewed mostly under the radar video game cinema. Which I always intended on revisiting, especially with the upcoming wave of game oriented documentaries on the horizon. I feel especially bad about the big stack of DVDs that I’ve accumulated already; apologizes to those that passed along screeners that I’ve allowed to collect dust. Perhaps I can finish the job on this end…

BTW, the absolute best video game documentary ever, even better than King of Kong? That would be Second Skin. Oh, and my fave column? Jeremiah Johnson, aka Nullsleep‘s Shmup Me Up, Buttercup, which is where I first learned about Touhou Project. I also perhaps shouldn’t admit the following, because I swore to keep it a promise, but that was years ago and maybe Simon won’t mind at this point: I was GSW’s very first paid columnist!

Eventually, Simon decided to pass the reigns to someone else? not myself, and I was kinda pissed. I asked: “Who the hell is this Eric Caoili guy?” But then I watched him do his thing and went: “Gee, this guy’s actually really good.” And then it dawned on me that he was also the guy running the only other blog that could stand toe to toe with GSW, Tiny Cartridge. And next thing you know, we became friends online, and I was even asked to help fill in for him, while on vacation, alongside Adam and Bruno!

Hence why I felt so honored (and validated) to be asked to become part of an official part of GSW earlier this year, and hence why I was so heartbroken when it came to an end. I’m confident, no matter where life takes me professionally, that those six months will remain a personal highlight for years to come.

So I guess the question that many might be asking is why has the curtain been drawn? Well, that’s neither here nor there, but I think the fact that such a beloved outlet, one that was championed by individuals that clearly exhibited passion for the thing, and which also enjoyed an intensely loyal following as well, could still come to a close is just another indication of how rocky those internet waters truly are these days. The means of dispersing information, the other channels that are in competition for people’s attention, and most importantly, the ability to monetize it all has never been more crowded and confusing.

I make no bones about the fact that the number of hits to this site is not what they used to be, though there are countless related and unrelated reasons. Ultimately, I’m still keeping this thing alive cuz I just like doing it (the fact that many folks have continued to stick around also helps, thank goodness). Yet more importantly, no real money’s involved. Meaning no paychecks to balance, no numbers to produce in order to appease advertisers, etc. Simon also has bigger fish to fry these days. Not only is he helping to run Game Developers Magazine and the Game Developer Conference, but he’s also one of the driving forces behind the Indie Royale.

And as Simon sez: the mainstream press is doing a better job of covering the wild and wacky side of gaming (yet there’s plenty of room left for improvement, IMHO). Along with: “So long, and thanks for all the fish, as everyone is obligated to say at this point.” Anyhow, I speak on the behalf for pretty much everyone involved when saying that all the kind words and warm thoughts have been extremely appreciated. I must also once again thank Simon and Eric for allowing me to be part of the team. As illustrated above, GSW has been a really big deal in my life; more than anything else, it allowed me to meet many fine folks, some who are now friends for life.

One last thing: what have I written for GameSetWatch that I’m most proud of? Hard to say. Not to brag, but I was the first to report on a few things, like that dating sim between man and bird that others are finally starting to talk about. Though if I had to choose just one, it would be my rundown of the TNT Amusements Infomercial.

Time for a quick, mid-week update (since it’s been a while):

- I’m assuming that many out there have been busy with all the big, end of the year releases that have flooded store shelves over the past couple of weeks. At the moment, I’m putting Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 through its paces, on the behalf of Joystiq believe it or not! More on that when the time is right. Oh, and been thoroughly enjoying Peace Walker on a larger screen as well; it’s still a portable game at heart, but I’ve just never enjoyed the PSP’s set-up, mostly the analogue nub, even after all this time.

Though the one platform I refer to the most, simply by virtue of being a New Yorker, with the trains and all, is still my iPhone (at least these days, since I haven’t picked up a new DS title in ages). Finally got a 4S btw! Well worth the wait and hassle; am totally in love with the thing. Sucks I couldn’t get a 32 GB mode, so had to get 16 GB instead, the last one in my neck of the woods. Which means it can’t hold as much Sega music as I’d like, but as first world problems goes, that’s perhaps at the very top of that list.

Anyhow, last night was the launch festivities for some new Peanuts title for iOS. I also dig Charlie Brown and company, yet given my affinity for iPhone/iPad games as well, I approached the shindig with a certain degree of skepticism. I mean, let’s be honest: Snoopy and video games haven’t been the best of bed fellows over the years Everyone keeps saying that there was a really awesome Red Baron game not too long ago, which I don’t doubt, but the two just seem to be? I dunno? not the best of fits.

Ultimately, my primary reason for attending was because the game’s makers had invited a bunch of local Redditors to check it out, hence how I found out in the first place. Folks often ask where I get much of my info, and it’s via Reddit (sorry NeoGAF). Though instead of just scoping out headlines, in recent weeks (mostly due to prodding from Jason, whose a fairly hardcore Reddit user himself) I’ve been paying closer attention to the community aspects.

And since it’s been a while since I attended a good, old fashioned, meet-up of strangers from the internet? Plus the promise of free booze simply sealed the deal. It took place near the Empire State Building, at a sports bar that was packed to the gill with people in blue attire, at least the downstairs part. Upstairs was where all the online peeps were at, along with someone in a Snoopy outfit. Plus an open bar?

Among the many new acquaintances I made was some guy who writes about gold plus other precious metals, and is a fellow New Yorker that’s dying to return to Cali, simply for another taste of In-N-Out Burger; he confessed to me that it was his primary reason for wanting to move out to Cali, which I noted was not such a crazy idea as he had assumed.

He also seemed fairly convinced by my arguments regarding hot dogs, specifically how NYC can’t hold a candle to the stuff being done in Seattle. Sorry Coney Island, but call me back when you start putting cream cheese in your toasted buns.

There was another dude that runs the bicycling subReddit, as evidenced by his attire, and who also really dug my thoughts on social networking. Like how I honestly believe Google+ will be discarded in three years, just like Wave and Buzz was. Plus there was Dan, one of driving forces behind the game, and who took offense to my opinion that Sonic Generations is a steaming pile of? more on that later as well. Speaking of?

The new Peanuts title is actually in the vein of Smurfs’ Village; my only prior knowledge of that particular thing is how some kid in the UK racked up like $50,000 dollars with of actual purchases, in-game, or something ridiculous like that. Whatever the case, the mold it provided is a good one. The details are a bit foggy? I had a LOT to drink? but basically you oversea a neighborhood street fair, and depending on how well you do, which is determined by the attractions you chose and their placement, plus those who man them (who are from the original comics), will bring in Snoopy bucks. Which in turn can be used to reinvest in the proceedings.

Though the heart of it all are the mini games, which the street fair provides structure and context for. I also recall Dan or someone else stating that they were the primary nucleus for the project, and the Smurfs’ Village format was adopted afterwards, which again, worked out quite nicely. I didn’t get a chance to test them all, but the few that I did were lots of fun. And Christ, hard as hell, to a shocking degree. These activities help to unlock original comic strips from Charles Schultz and other goodies.

I was told repeatedly that the audio was fantastic, and that the game’s producers when the extra mile, negotiating the rights for iconic music and voices, even though they were not included when the deal was original struck. Too bad it was too loud at the bar to really hear anything, but the animation was pretty impressive. Especially the way everyone walked around, it was super cute! Along with the occasional bursts of dancing that goes down; fans of Charlie Brown Christmas will be pleased.

Again, there’s been countless examples of Peanuts games that have not worked in my book, because the Charlie Brown universe has always been shoehorned into something that wasn’t appropriate. So it’s nice to know that there’s finally a game featuring utilizes Snoopy & company in a manner that simply makes sense. Which is what I believe I told the guy with the video camera, when he asked for my thoughts of the game. Alongside my confession that I thought Peppermint Patty was hot. Sorry, but I just have a thing for girls with short hair, that are kind of dykeish, and are really temperamental. Plus, once more, I had way too many rum and cokes.

- Back to Sonic Generations, I actually whipped up a review for Heavy! Unfortunately, it’s not up quite yet, so in the meanwhile, pleasure refer to my reviews of Daytona USA and Guardian Heroes, which accompanies a little ode to Sega of mine.

EDIT: Actually, here it is, alongside Radiant Silvergun’s.

Meanwhile, I recently began contributing to Mecha Damashii after a long absence! It totally blows how Metal Gear Rex replica I’ve had my eyes on for literally years now is going to be $400, at least.

Oh, and if I could update Americurry, I could (up till this point, I’ve simply emailed my stuff, instead of directly interfacing with its WordPress). If only to post this?

BTW, don’t forget: I also write for Guysim every single day. I believe there’s much fun to be had, watching me introduce distinctly off the beaten path gaming hijinks to an audience that’s very much mainstream. Though? and this is for a whole other conversation? I am totally digging writing about games for folks who aren’t hardcore gamers and just want to know what’s cool to play, period.

Anyhow, time to wrap it up cuz I’m on the air in half an hour! For those who haven’t heard, I am now the official third, permanent chair of the Fangamer podcast! The announcement was made in the last episode, which was finally uploaded just a few days ago, about gaming and parenting. Tonight’s will be able what we’re thankful for, since it’s again that time of year. Should be fun!

“The Joys Of Hygiene”: New York Comic 2011 Part 2

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

All right, time for round two of the New York Comic Con 2011! For those who missed them, here’s part one. And once again, the fine photographic acumen that you’ll be seeing on display is courtesy of Emi Spicer! I also have some pics of my own as well; it’ll be fairly obvious as to which pics belong to who.

Anyhow, and as expected, Saturday was jam packed with everyone in their finest convention attire. Perhaps my favorite that day, and maybe from the entire show, was Tron Bonne?

Supermen and Batmen are dime a dozen at such functions, but Plastic Man? Not so much!

With the one hottest things this year, without question, was Adventure Time?

Hey, it’s Hollywood Hulk Hogan and CM Punk!

And gaming’s favorite transgendered or hermaphrodite (I’ve lost track at this point, and kinda don’t care anymore), Poison?

I often try not to be get involved, but in this case of Ico here, how could I not?

Some gaming swag we missed the day before; gotta say, I would like Ratchet, or Ratchet & Clank fame, so much more if he looked the same in the games as he does here…

Aside from the aforementioned Skinner X Alex Pardee zine, my other big purchase at the show was the ultra limited edition Steff Bomb X ESC-Toy plush arcade cabinet, which some might recall me mentioning before on GSW?

On a related note, check out this super colossal huge arcade cabinet?

?. It’s not the world’s biggest, but the guy who runs ArcadeDLX is in the middle of putting one that actually will be, back in his home base in Chicago. He showed me work in progress pics via his iPhone; it was hilariously gigantic. Speaking of, Emi couldn’t get over how big this woman’s breasts were?

? Until I had to explain to her how she’s supposed to be Power Girl, and having a large upper body was part of the character! Anyhow, just as impressive?

Dark Helmet!

It’s the Mario Brothers with Totoro. Why? Why not?

This girl was quite ecstatic that I actually got what she was supposed to be, which was female Joel from Mystery Science Theater 3000?

Apparently, this dude dressed as Bane, cracking Batman’s back? Old high school chum of Emi’s?

On that note, it’s always funny running into familiar faces at any con?

The last people on earth I expected to run into was Fitz and Martha, yet lo and behold?

SEIBEI was once again pimping those fine threads of his, along with his male companion?

Speaking of Daves I know, that’s where I found yet another at the First Second table, along with Colleen?

And here he is, with the aforementioned autographing of Astronaut Academy?

What was the hottest anime-related cosplay at the show? Not surprisingly, Madoka?

It’s unfortunate you can’t see this guy dressed up as Cut Man’s scissor head, but trust me, it was awesome?

Speaking of, some additional Mega Man cosplay, featuring Tron Bonne from before yet again?.

? I would run into her again at the Mega Man Legends booth later that weekend.

Believe it or not, the one costume that elicited the strongest reaction had to be the aliens from Sesame Street! I literally squealed with delight upon first glance, which was immediately followed by “EMI, TAKE A PICTURE, TAKE A PICTURE!!!”

Unfortunately, by this point, it was time for my photographer to end her services. She had a party to go to, and no doubt, she had enough of the Jacob Javits, packed to the gill with sweaty dorks (it was getting that point in the day in which the funk was becoming unavoidable) for one year. Hey, it takes time to build up a tolerance.

Thankfully, on her way out, we ran into our pal Michelle, as Rei Ayanami as a bunny! And of course, I had to get in on the action?

Alright, time for some additional pics, courtesy of my noticeably crappy camera! These were most of these were taken after Emi had left, though a few are from when I was waiting for her. Cuz that’s were I ran into of the true greats from the world of anime, Kaneda?

I am such a sucker for clearly home made Iron Man suits, and this guy’s take on the Mark 5/suitcase suit from the second movie, simply rocked my world?

It’s female Ezio Auditore da Firenze and Harley Quinn: b-fries!

I can’t say I’ve ever encountered a Shi’ar cosplayer first-hand, nor seen one from any other show?

Again, Adventure Time was a huge hit among the kids?

This guy’s Mad Eye Moody was pretty nifty?

It’s Wander, and he/she’s looking for some Colossi action?

Ron Burgundy!

Yet another anime icon, Haruko?

As previously noted, Minecraft was also pretty popular among game-centric costumers?

Like I also said before, Transformers had a major presence at the show. In addition to pimping several new lines of toys, there’s also the new MMO. Too bad it looks awful?

Though looking like crap for altogether reasons was Ubisoft’s Black Eyed Peas game, which was such a shameless Dance Central rip-off that I simply couldn’t believe my eyes?

? Yet the word that it’s actually a product by iNis, the makers of Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents was the most distressing thing of all. But hey, we all gotta pay the bills, I hear that.

Anyhow, the last photo of day three/two was of the upcoming Miku Hachune X Virtual On figure?

So the true highlight of New York Comic 2011 was its own take on speed taking, dubbed Sci-Fi Speed Dating. I had heard about it, but was unsure what the hell it was about, and after getting the details at long last, I simply knew it would be the story of year over at Guysim!

Day two for me/day three of the show ended with myself and Derrick, who had assumed the role of my convention companion by this point(such things are always more enjoyable with a pal? too bad if there’s more than two people, things can get complicated, especially when roaming crowded show floors), bearing witness to the proceedings, and it was? a total trip to say the least. Unfortunately, haven?t had the chance to pen the tale quite yet. But I assure you, it’s on its way, especially since? again, all will be clear soon! I’ll be sure to pass along the link once it’s live.

Day three/four was pretty uneventful. Either my final round of press appointments and one last check of stuff that I had missed. Like props from Iron Man 2 that was stumbled upon, while on route to the collectable card game playing part of the show?

? As already noted, I absolutely LOVE that movie! Anyhow, that’s where most of the autograph sessions were going down, including Colleen and Stephanie, for their latest Guinea Pig book?

That’s also where I ran into Chell, with a potato?

A little bit further was some real life Quidditch taking place. Was fairly interested in seeing it first-hand, though I do agree with Joe and June when they described as essentially lacrosse. They didn’t even bother to wear any robes! EDIT: Instead of the crappy pic from before, here’s footage that I totally forgot that I had?

What’s cuter than a kid dressed as Wolverine, playing the new Avengers 3DS game? Not much comes to mind, really?

Nice to see Beetle Bailey and Popeye get some love from designer toy folks?

Nearby was a gigantic set-up to celebrate Godzilla. Too bad this is the only pic that came out halfway decent?

The Savage Dragon!!!

Speaking of comics, the next time I visit home, I definitely digging through my old long box, and bringing this baby back?

These folks were actually promoting what could be best described as the live-action Rocky Horror Show, but with Ghostbusters, which is about a billion times more interesting in my book. Also helping his how the girl controlling Slimer is kinda cute?

My absolute last pic of the show? Viewtiful Joe with his huge ass canon?

Guess that’s about it? NYCC 2011 was certainly far more low-key compared to previous installments, which again I totally didn’t mind. For everyone else, seemed just as hustle and bustle as always, if not more so. While it still has a way to goes with catching up with the San Diego version, it’s still doing mighty fine for itself.

Am definitely looking forward to NYCC 2012! Along with the chance to finally hit the stage once again, if they’ll have me this time. I’ll be sure to give the green lit to write your congressman (or to pester the event’s organizers)! Till then?
