Electronic Gaming Monthly

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

As some folks might already know, I recently began writing for Electronic Gaming Monthly. Well, for the most part, it’s been mostly little things here and there, just stock game previews, nothing sexy. Not that I’m complaining of course! More than elated to be part of the team (at long last; it’s pretty much every single video game journalist’s goal to one day write for the Yankees of gaming news outlets).

Well this morning is the day I’ve been long waiting for; my first (of hopefully many) special reports for their digital imprint, EGMi, in which I take a special look at game related culture. First up, a look at the boomin’ chiptune scene, featuring an interviewer with one of the key movers and shakers (plus very good friend) Chris Burke, aka Glomag! To check it out, simply hit this link. And if you like what you see, please spread the word. It’s about time the masses were exposed to such things me thinks.

Oh, also: I just became a contributor for the Attract Mode blog! My first post can be seen here.

RE/Mixed Media Festival

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

The RE/Mixed Media Festival is about the differing forms of media and art, be it film, music, fashion, and the internet, that are converging to form something new, along with the cultural and legal ramifications. And of course, interactive entertainment, aka video games, is at the forefront of all this.

Hence why I’ve been asked to speak at a panel entitled "Extending Game Culture"! I’ll be sharing my pearls of wisdom on the subject, alongside some fine folks, including Josephine Dorado, Jesper Juul, and my good pal Chris Burke.

For more information, as well as the schedule, simply refer to their homepage.

Babycastles

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

As those made it out to the MoCCA Art Fest or frequent the blog are well aware of, the latest installment of the my gaming zine didn’t quite make it out as originally planned. But it’s all good, cuz that just means the party wil be even harder at Babycastles!

What’s Babycastles you might be asking? Why, it’s only New York City’s first and only indie arcade! Located on the border of Brooklyn and Queens, and housed in the legendary DIY music and art space known as Silent Barn, that’s where I’ll be celebrating the launch of the newest issue, THREE: FORT90ZINE. Copies will be on-hand (promise), along with a number of games that are mentioned in the brand new issue, as well as ones past, including my very first indie creation, Jizzmoppa. Which, btw, is also being added to the venue’s line-up!

In addition to the launch festivities, the evening will also serve as the latest arcade opening, featuring games from Mark Essen, otherwise known as Messhof, and the creator of this year’s winner for the Independent Games Festival Award for Best Mobile Game Design at GDC 2010, Glow Artisan for the Nintendo DSi, Ramiro Corbetta. Both men will also be giving talks about their work, as will I, plus there’ll be performances by Mark DeNardo and Blue Leader!

As you can see, it’s a party that you simply cannot afford to miss. For additional info, make sure to hit the event’s Facebook page.
