In Canada & In Glorious Stereoscopic, Anaglyphic 3D

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

Greetings once again from Toronto! Actually made it this time, though not as an immigrant… that’s still being worked out… but as a visitor. Considering how I came dangerously close to being sent back home again, I call it progress nonetheless.

Anyhow, the purpose of my trip? Why, to be part of this year’s Toronto Comic Arts Festival! Or, to be more exact, this year’s installment of Comics vs Games. Comics vs Games 3, to be even more precise. Though technically, I’m actually here for Comics vs Games 3D!

Since I’ve got plenty on my plate at the moment, allow me to save myself a bit of time by pointing towards my recent Attract Mode blog post, which touches upon all the important bits. While you’re it, feel free to also check out Polygon’s coverage of the festivities and not just because I’m interviewed!

So, for anyone reading this who is going to be in town this Thursday, please stop by the opening! And be sure to RSVP in advance; the Facebook event page has everything you need to know as it pertains to start time, location, and all that jazz.

Also don’t forget that I’m part of the Putting Pixels on Paper – Game Zine Revolution, smack in the middle of TCAF Saturday (and literally a few floors above where this year’s Bit Bazaar will be taking place. And speaking of: for those wondering, no, I will not have copies of my way, way, WAY overdue latest installment of the FORT90ZINE, aka FORT90ZINE4ANSWER handy. Heck, I won’t even have reprints of issues 1-3 either.

How come? It all has to do with my troubles at the border last time. Basically, in order to avoid any and all red flags from customs/immigration (I’m on their sh*t list, as already hinted at), had to play it extra safe this trip, which meant showing up with nothing other than what a normal person would bring when visiting another nation.

Am more than a little annoyed that I won’t have zines for sale, even though I’m on a panel about them, and that’s the PERFECT place to pimp such things. But that’s just the way it is. K, enough bitching; any trash talk online about how ridiculous the entire immigration process is has the serious potential to one day bite me in the ass…

Anyways, hope to see some of you later this week, and for everyone else, a full report will come soon thereafter! Followed by last year’s Comics vs Games 2 report (am still wondering if I should file my PAX East 2014 report beforehand, and when I should also file my PAX East 2013 report before that as well).

Matt, the creators of some of the webcomics I read are based in or near Toronto and will be at TCAF. Please keep an eye out for Tara Tallen of Galaxion, and Isabelle Melançon & Megan Lavey-Heaton of Namesake, just off the top of my head.
