I See Dead People. Very Boring Dead People.

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

Earlier tonight I saw Ju-On: The Grudge. I don’t know why, but I can never seem to remember one very basic fact of life: 99% of Japanese horror films are simply not very good.

It’s strange: I love horror films, and I love Asian films. I’ve seen some killer horror flicks from Hong Kong and Korea, but when it comes to Japan, unless it’s by Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure is still the scariest film I’ve ever seen, period), everything else is pure shlock, even though they try very hard not to be.

I guess it’s a cultural thing because the movie features yet another deathly pale skinned, very long haired girl, which I guess is supposed to be scary in Japan, but I find somewhat of a turn on.

The film is from the creators of Ringu, and I found both that and it’s American remake pretty mediocre as well. So I guess it’s no surprise then that Ju-On is also being redone for US audiences with… Sara Michelle Gellar and Ted Raimi?
