“Gee…. typical female Tamagotchi driver”

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

Instead of waiting another week for a fully loaded updated, how about I just pass along these appendixes to some previously covered material…

- So if you haven’t checked out that alternate Golden Girls intro that I linked to yesterday, what are you waiting for? DO IT. The folks behind the vid, Fatal Farm, are like my new heroes, and they have a bunch of other re-tooled tv openings that are definitely worth checking out, such as ALF, Happy Days, Zoobilee Zoo (warning: NSFW and offensive to furries), and my personal favorite, Dynasty. I don’t think you have to be familiar with the show to find it brilliant, but it sure does help.

- And remember me mentioning how Panic now has a new line of Katamari Damacy shirts? Well, ever wonder how in the hell dudes that produce software for the Mac got involved with making shirts based on the most wacky of jappy video games? Well, there’s actually a story, and its a really good read!

- Once again, I might focus on some of the more notable things that were shown and said at the GDC last week in the near future, such as the call for game makers to stop obsessing over innovation and just make games fun, which was articulated by Miyamoto and quite a few others. Including Johnathan Mak, who apparently went of record with: “Innovation is bullshit.”

According to ShaperMC, he meant that people need to figure out what games have now before moving forward. Mak btw is the man behind a game that I was all hot and bothered over a few weeks back, and one of the main reasons why I was so amped for the GDC this year since that was where it was going to debut, but which I quietly forgot about, due to so much stuff going on. The game? Everday Shooter, whose existence was I reminded of via a recent Select Button thread. The consensus by those who played it is that its pretty goddamn good! By far the most intriguing descriptive comment: “Basically it’s Kenta Cho’s Rez”.

- Oh, and elsewhere at SB, someone created a chart that lists a number of its notable denizens, as well as illustrating and contrasting their relation to each other. And its nice to know that I have my own private circle of hell….

- Also as previously mentioned, with the death of E3, more and more game companies are reaching out to the press instead of us going to them, at least around around in the Big Apple, which is great for me since that means even more press events to keep me occupied. Today, Bandai Namco was in town with a small handful of titles on-hand. My main mission was to check out the new Tamagotchi game for the Wii on the behalf of Nick Mag, and during the demo I managed to offend both of the PR ladies; one was playing a driving mini-game, and was having a hard time handling the vehicle, so I quipped with “Gee…. typical female Tamagotchi driver”, which got a strong “Hey!” from the other. And later on, when talking about fighting games, I kinda dissed Tekken and later discovered that the other woman had worked on the series. Sorry, but Tekken 5′s difficulty is just plain borked (and that stupid exploding floor). Though there was no defense for Tekken 4… everyone knows that it just plain sucks.

Anyway, the unexpected highlight was Smash Court Tennis 3 for the PSP. For those not familiar with the series, its basically Namco’s take on Virtua Tennis. Actually, it?s EXACTLY the same thing, except with Namco’s snazzy graphic design-y front-end strewn about. But this new edition is noteworthy thanks to various mini-games, which are tied into a pair of classic Namco properties. One has you facing off against another opponent with power pellets, a la Pac Man, littered around the court. Everything is laid out just like a board from the game as well… there’s even ghosts running around… and the ball is actually a Pac Man. The goal is to hit the ball around and have it suck up the pellets along the way. Whoever wins the exchange gets all the pellets gathered in that serve. Looked really neat.

But what looked totally awesome was the tennis/Galaga mash up. Basically, enemy ships are strewn across the court (which takes place in outer space, and lighting effect was simply superb looking), and I believe you can take them out with the ball, or cause them to go after the other player. Primarily the mother ship and have it suck your opponent away. Still not sure how it works exactly, but it appeared to be hella fun.

- And finally, I?ve managed to get Silent Hill 1 onto my PSP. And its kinda turning out to be one of those games that might best be played on a TV set, but then again, the same could be said with pretty much all the PSP games, so I?m not letting that stop me! But the controls are kinda hard to deal with? I forget if that was always the case or if I finally have a strong case to modify the system?s d-pad.
