Chinatown Fair’s Brand New Colors

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

So? how was PAX East 2012? Awesome. Simply awesome.

Unfortunately, I can’t really get into all that right this second. Aside from the fact that, two days later, and I’ve barely made a dent as it pertains to all the stuff that I need to catch up, last weekend was also my last chance to screw around before buckling down and getting ready for COMICS VS GAMES, plus finally finishing up FORT90ZINE4ANSWER.

But real quick: had an amazing time, hanging with dear friends, plus making plenty of new ones! And I honestly can’t remember a single PAX in which I played as many amazing games as I did. Highlights include Super Time Force, Dyad, Skulls of the Shogun, Crimson Dragon, Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, plus the Metagame naturally.

Oh, and I got the chance to meet (and interview) Suda 51! That was kind of amazing. And man, did he get excited upon hearing that my favorite game of his is Flower, Sun, and Rain! Also showed him the entries I received for the No More Heroes art contest from last year, which he also dug.

Once I’m done with everything that I absolutely need to get done, ASAP, I should have time to file a report. In the meanwhile, be sure to tun into the live broadcast of the Fangamer podcast tomorrow (or later tonight, since I know most folks will be reading this in the morning), which will be all about last weekend.

Also, keep an eye out on my corner of MSNBC, which is where much of my PAX reporting is going towards. Thus far, have written about a group that helps the the handicapped enjoy video games like the rest of us, and earlier today I wrote about the golden age of arcades being alive and well.

I actually wrote about arcades twice today, which was a rare treat. In case you haven’t heard, there’s this 9 year old kind in East LA who made and maintains an amusement center made entirely out of cardboard, packing tape, parts from old toys, and calculators, and he is beyond rad.

Speaking of arcades, while in PAX, I got the following info from someone who I believe wishes to remain anonymous (though if he or she wishes for me to say who it is, I’ll gladly do so). Behold the new Chinatown Fair?

The photos were posted on Facebook, I believe either on or around last Friday, with the following?

“i passed by chinatown fair today and saw that it was undergoing renovations. the new owner saw me peering in and chatted me up. it seems that his business plan is to create an venue for family and kids.

the interior paint design is really child-like with the bricks painted in individual colors to create a multi-color diagonal pattern. basically, he’s created a design to repel the goth kids that used to hang about.”

I have to wonder if it re-opened for business on Sunday, since the interiors are reminiscent of a giant Easter egg.

Again, the photos above are not from me, but a friend of a friend on Facebook. I’ve been meaning to make a second return visit, especially since my first one failed to reap anything, but again, I’ve just been so damn busy. Hope to be back tomorrow with a follow-up of some kind.

It’s time once again for? the Penny Arcade Expo! PAX East to be exact. In Boston, which is where I am at the moment. In a hotel lobby, waiting for the Fangamer crew to show up, who are currently putting the final touches on their booth.

As always, am wearing multiple hats all weekend. First, I’ll be reporting on the behalf of MSNBC. Will be paying attention to all the headliners, naturally, but I?ve actually been asked to mostly concentrate on the stuff on the side. You know, all the wild and wacky cultural aspects that gives a show its true flavor.

And which is normally reserved (or should I say, have left over) for this blog. I’m thrilled my editor actually requested such coverage! In the meanwhile, and for those who haven’t seen it yet, be sure to check out my interview with Masahiro Sakurai, which I’m quite proud of.

Though what about my penchant for cosplay? That’s been claimed for already as well, by Guyism. And once again, I’ve elicited the help of Emi Spicer, who did such a fine job helping me cover last fall?s New York Comic Con.

I’ll also be fulfilling my role as Attract Mode’s official east coast rep (even though, after the move to 2.0, such a title no longer exists) by helping the fine folks at FG peddle our wares. Despite the fact that, honestly, they seriously don’t need me the least bit and I?ll mostly be just getting in the way.

Speaking of, we have two new items debuting this weekend! First is something that will eventually be part of the new online shop (which is close to relaunching, I swear to God). It’s Derek Yu’s super cute and super cool Spelunky figures!

Some might recall the set that I picked up from Derek himself at PAX Prime. They are indeed awesome and we’re delighted to be finally provide distribution for them.

But that’s not all; again, for those who haven’t heard the news, Attract Mode and Fangamer are proud to be the one and only distributor at PAX East of the critically acclaimed Metagame from Local No. 12!

They were a massive hit at GDC, and we’re all expecting a similar, enthusiastic response! And special thanks to Eric Zimmerman for help making it happen.

Can’t wait for Attract Mode and Fangamer to rock PAX, as we do every year!

Get Ready For… COMICS VS GAMES

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

All right, been waiting for what feels like forever to pass along the following. For those who haven’t heard the news (or did, but didn’t check out the Magic Pony Showcase link), later this month, I’ll be in Toronto for?

Been a while since I last curated an art show. Late 2010 to be exact, for a pair of exhibitions at Babycastles Manhattan, back when I was still a part of that outfit. Last summer in Seattle, at PAX Prime, was approached by Chris Butcher, the man who runs The Toronto Comics Art Festival, about the possibility of Attract Mode helping out with something that he and The Hand Eye Society were cooking up, on the behalf of TIFF Nexus.

Which is why I’ve been so busy these past couple of weeks. COMICS VS GAMES is being brought to you by an army of incredibly awesome people, and it’s a real honor to have been asked to be part of such a legitimately groundbreaking event. My job was to help produce game inspired artwork by some of my peeps from the world of cartooning, to help pretty up the Magic Pony. I’m confident that the results will seriously blow everyone away!

You’ll be hearing more about the event in the coming weeks, once the official PR machine goes full steam ahead, but right now, here’s a sneak peak at the nearly final line-up of artists that are participating. It’s a nice mix of names that who follows Attract Mode should be instantly familiar with, along with superstars from their own respective circles, all of whom I’ve long wanted to work with. In alphabetical order?

- Lamar Abrams

- Georgina Chac?n

- Lindsay Collins

- Ashley Davis

- Jacob Ferguson

- Kyle Fewell

- Chris Furniss

- Zac Gorman

- Olly Jones

- HamletMachine

- Kris Mukai

- Mar? Odomo

- Cory Schmitz

- Jovan Velkoski

? Like I said, there might be even more names added to that list in the coming days/weeks.

I can’t even being to describe what a thrill it’s been thus far, and things have only just gotten started! And there’s plenty more Comics Vs. Games news to come, so as they say in the game Rez, stay alert?

Oh, btw, this weekend is PAX East, and I’ll be there on the behalf of the Attract Mode portion of the Fangamer booth, naturally. And there’s an announcement pertaining to that end as well! Which I might mention around here, or over at the soon to be relaunched AM blog, provided it’s up in time for the show. Finger’s crossed!
