JAPAN!!!!! Part 15

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

Day 8: Shinjuku (once again)

The way back to our hotel was thankfully relatively easily. Here’s what hotel room #6 (I think) looked like…

It was very nice, and in fact the most spacious of all the rooms I would stay in. Plus, it really was nice to get away from room #5. It was also the only hotel I would stay at while in Japan that had a Bible in the room!

But the rest was brief. It was mostly just to grab our room keys (by this point they were finally ready) and put our stuff away. Even though it was raining out, it wasn’t really too bad, just a light drizzle, and I was hungry, as was Joe and June, so we all went out once again.

Here’s a pair of mannequins in front of some club that we passed on the way to grub…

After a nice meal of soba noodles for all of us, we walked around the area a bit. Here’s a Hello Kitty store we stopped by, primarily to see if there was Chococat goods….

Not a trace. It would seem he’s been erased from the Hello Kitty continuum/canon. Strange… And no, they had no Hello Kitty vibrators for sale. Anyway, upstairs was a video store, full of Japanese offerings, like animu…

… And American as well, like Same Jackson. So Snakes on a Plane is called Snake Flight in Japan…

Even in Japan, you just can’t get away from the Hoff…

And above the video store was a book store, that offered mostly manga….

Phoenix Wright was in full effect, with tons of comics based on the game….

This cover looked might awesome….

…. Unfortunately, I had no idea what the interiors were like. And that’s the thing; there were mountains and mountains of awesome looking manga, but I had no way to check it out since everything was shrink-wrapped! I guess people in Japan know exactly what they are looking for… but about first time readers, those who aren’t sure of something? Anyway, its always said that Japanese comics cover a variety of subject matter, and its true. Everything from bondage to hot dog eating….

I think I’ve seen this before, in the States. Anyhow, really nice covers….

There were loads of art books based on video games too. Here we have ones for Senko No Ronde, Darkstalkers, and Persona 3, each of which I got…

… But would later lose somewhere along the line, during yet another hotel switch (along with some other stuff, mostly presents for other people, which I’m still pretty pissed about). I also got this book featuring girls combines with machines… but instead of WWII machinery, a lot of it is totally mundane crap, like refrigerators. Thankfully I didn’t loose that one…

Afterwards we decided to check out a corner store that Keith and Anney had stumbled across the previous day. And it lived up to the hype…

… That there is a Pac Man themed ski mask! At this point, Joe and June were getting tired, but I still had some energy in me, so I decided to check out the Taito center across the street to see if they had anything good.

Their UFO catchers had lots of, surprise, bear related prizes (they simply love bears in Japan). Aside from Relax Bear, they some based on Gloomy Bear, and the old guy with tank treads too…

I forget who he is, but he’s darn cute!

You had Super Mario stuff too…

Plus at least one redemption machine that was Ghost ‘N Ghouls themed!

As for games, it had pretty much all the titles I had become accustomed to seeing (Virtua Fighter 5, that Virtual On-esque Gundam game, Aracana Heart, various card/video game hybrids), though it did also have this Lupin typing game….

Which utilized Dreamcast keyboards!

They also had the Typing of the Dead, that everyone knows and loves. Eventually, even I ran out of steam, and then it was time to head back to the hotel. And I love how rain always makes any nighttime city shots look that much better….

Once in my room, I kicked back and, naturally, watched some TV. Japanese game shows are the best; they’re so high concept. This one quiz show offered contestants two possible answers out of a set of six (I believe they were world plays of some sort), but instead of sticking someone behind a podium and giving them a buzzer like they do in American, here we have people walking on some path high in the sky, with the city below, and the answers are presented as blocks on each side, and they have to use lightsaber-esque batons to swipe the correct answers….

The special effects were simply amazing. The blue screen effects were so extensive that when they zoomed in on contestant’s faces, the background would blur! Oh, and here’s some infomercial on something about back care. We have some young alien girl that plucked regular human from his sleep in the back and hitting him in the back with a hammer to magically cure his back pain…

At this particular hotel, they had an American movie channel, but they were running some Sandra Bullock festival. I used to have such a crush on her… till she started doing so many shitty romantic comedies. So yeah, I never stayed on that channel for very long (I only tuned in from time to time to see if it was playing the one Bullock movie that I totally love: Demolition Man). Eventually I grew bored and hungry, so I went out again to nab some onigiri and swing by the outdoor arcade nearby, which was actually connected to a batting cage that had other machines in the lobby, Played a few rounds of DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou, but that was it, since I knew that I had to get early the next day to move out yet again…

JAPAN!!!!! Part 14

Day 8: Harajuku (continued)

Eventually headed over to Takeshita Dori, which is the main drag in Harajuku…

Which again was packed with clothing shops…

My favorite had to be this one shop that had some pretty awesome novelty shirts….

And again, stuff for your dog…

Next was Kiddie Land, which is apparently this super famous toy story. There was like eight floors, each packed tight with all sorts of crazy stuff like these monkey umbrellas….

And these dogs that humped your USB slot. If they were also flash drives, I would have bought five in an instant, but alas they were not…

Blocks of digital people that you combine with others to form some “neighborhood” was pretty popular…

Also still popular is Totoro…

Even more Rilakkuma goods…

Bears where everywhere!

There was just so much to soak in….

Video games were to be found as well, but only the Wii, which I guess makes sense, it being a toy store and all….

And directly blow the games, a bunch of Animal Crossing things…

They had a huge section dedicated to just miniature… stuff.

Oh, the best bathroom of the entire trip…

So Keith and Anney had brought with them their cat costumes with the intention of suiting up and possibly making a scene at Takeshita Street. Unfortunately the weather was starting to turn crappy, but since it was their only real chance, the two decided to give it a shot, even if it was only for a few minutes (their costumes are powered by fan, and if rain got into the system, since there’s exhaust vents, it could ruin the mechanics).

Again, I did double duty operating a camera of theirs, but I still managed to snap a few pictures of my own all along the way, from set-up to walking around…

They only got about ten minutes of action, but it was enough. And it went far better than the night before; they decided to prance around in Yakuza town, and kept tackled by drunks. They all thought Anney was a huge gay cat (due to the color pink I guess). Pretty crazy, and dangerous, stuff.

One last pic before heading out, of some robot themed barbershop…

JAPAN!!!!! Part 13

Day 8: Harajuku

The day started with all of us once up and about bright and early to again to pack up for yet another change in hotel. And everything was going find till I realized that I couldn’t find my laptop; I must had forgotten it somewhere, at a previous hotel, due to the constant moving.

The thing was, it wasn’t even my laptop in the first place; my had work lent it to me to post about cell phones while on the road, which was something I suggested. But for a variety of reasons… the constant moving from hotel to hotel, how some places had internet, some didn’t, plus the computer itself was so slow that it was useless… I simply couldn’t do any work, and dragging it around (it was old, and therefore big and heavy) had become a real headache. Needless to say, I shocked and mortified by the notion of losing company hardware less than a month into my new job (never mind that I would probably have to pay full price for a eight year old machine that would cost like $10 on Craigslist).

So I was pretty mortified when I joined the others in the lobby. And when I explained my dilemma, Joe pointed something out to be on the ground… my laptop bag! I had put it there to enjoy a massage chair, and it had been there all night! And totally exposed! Again, Japan was totally insane; I dare anyone to leave anything value alone in a high traffic area anywhere in NYC for fifteen minutes. And once more, they have some fucking hellacious anti-theft laws in Japan.

Also, in the lobby was this super cute illustration letting everyone know that tea was available…

Hide met up with us once again (whom I promptly gave the biggest hug, to give thanks to “his people”), we all walked with all our stuff (which was started to become increasingly heavier and bulkier due to all the stuff we kept picking up as visited places. The new places was not that far away from the the previous spot, but thankfully was much, much nicer and upscale. Here’s Hide checking us in, with the entire front desk staff being girls in pink space uniforms…

Same thing as before; check in wasn’t for like five hours, so we asked them to keep our stuff in some corner, nice and safe, while we spend the day exploring. And this time, to make sure that I did not get lost at all, I took like a picture literally every five feet on the way to the train station. Maybe excess, but I just didn’t want to take any chances.

I’m obviously not going to show all of these, but just a few, like this shot of the building from a little ways afar…

Again, it was so nice that it was some nice big building that was visible from a distance, whereas the previous place was literally hidden in some back alley. Oh, and here’s an outdoor mini arcade about a block away (again, arcades are everywhere in Japan). And I wasn’t surprised by this point that nothing appeared to be vandalized….

There was also a pet store nearby…

The main point of entry from the main drag was this Mister Donut….

… BTW, I had a ton of traditional Japanese food, all of it simply delicious. I also had some Japanese takes on American foods, and most of it…. not so hot! Donuts for example. The ones are Mister Donut were pretty bland. But their mascot is a lion with a cruller for a main. How fucking genius is that? Makes total sense if you think about it!

Yet more daytime shots of Shinjuku during another hustling and bustling mid-afternoon…

Along the way we stopped by this glasses shop that has stations up front where you can get your glasses cleaned with some heavy duty solvents, and totally free of charge! I little bath and I managed to get three years of caked on crap hidden in my frames. Mostly blood from a GWAR shows from a few Halloweens ago.

Back on the JR (that’s the above ground trains that run throughout Tokyo btw) we went….

Here’s a cute don’t be a dick sign at the station….

And here’s yet another Nintendo ad, which again was everywhere. This one I’m assuming is touting the Wii’s Virtual Console…

Anyway, the five of us ventured to Harajuku, which I was dying to check out due to everything being closed when I went two night before. Though mostly it was because, once again, not video games I was hoping to nab the most during my trip by stylish threads.

Right across the street from the station was a Snoopy Town….

And around the corner, some panda themed bakery….

Don’t know what these were, but ain’t they just friggin’ cute?

Just walking down the street…

Yet another neat/quasi-futuristic looking building…

We eventually came across Harajuku Street, which was this small back street filled with all sorts of designer clothing stores…

Instead of just posting stickers, at least one person decided to plaster water colors on the wall…

Love the design, but the shirt it was on was a bit much, like $40 American. And I was expecting to pay a lot for clothing, which is why I had to be selective…

At one point we passed by a creepy looking underground store that had dirty suits hanging on the wall, Naturally, I was sent in ahead to investigate….

Again, I’m a super big fan of Asia’s urban architecture…

Some more art on the street….

Random, Engrish-y shirt in some shop…

This place allowed dogs!

And this was the sign to some… sex shop for pets?

Eventually, I finally found one of the things I was most looking forward to entire trip (and yes, I know I’ve said that like a dozen times already… but there was a LOT I was looking forward to in Japan…. but this one was really up there): the BEAMS T shirt shop (which I had previously throughout was in Shibuya and kinda wasted everyone’s time with my wild goose-chase)….

Unfortunately, no pictures were allowed so I could only nab that last one inside. But trust me, if you love designer shirts, then Beams is the hallowed halls that one most visit before passing on. Unfortunately everything is pretty pricey… like around $50 American a pop…. and they didn’t have any Rez shirts on-hand, but that was to be expected (those were commissioned years ago), but still, it was absolutely amazing. If I didn’t have my party with me, I could have easily spent four hours there.
