“THIS IS THE RAVE”

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

I was up till 7 in the morning working on a project and doing other stuff that I’ve been holding off since forever. Unfortunately, I had to pass on the Jersey IGDA meeting because of this, but at least some long standing items are officially off my to do list. But I was still able to make it to the Super Mario Movie opening. First off, here are some pics courtesy of my crappy camera phone…

Upon entering the space, you’ll find on both sides of a hallway’s walls, all the code that comprises the “film”, all 32k’s worth, which took Cory Arcangel over 343 hours to compose (plus an additional 100 hours worth of bug-testing). At the very end of all this documentation you’ll find the actual cartridge that houses the movie, or at least one of them (see picture). Also in the room was a short video which showed the process, from Corey gathering research from other various ROM hackers to him soldiering components onto the Super Mario Bros cartridge (and while eating Cheerios).

As for the actual film itself, it’s basically 15 minutes long and illustrates how video game worlds deteriorate due to age. The story follows Mario as he traverses his now broken landscape, with the events being loosely tied together via broken game speak, which is a very close cousin to Engrish, but at this point, I’d like to think that it has flourished on it’s own.

At a certain point, Mario comes across a blue Goomba (btw, it’s worth noting that Mario is actually sporting his brother’s colors) and is taken to a rave. The true highlight of the movie, the rave scene in not brilliant due to its concept, but in its execution. I won’t spoil the ending, but let’s just say its very Yar’s Revenge-like.

Overall, I enjoyed it quite a bit. The piece does an excellent job of playing with and adding some meaning behind one’s conceptions of “messed up” graphics. My favorite part, and I don’t know if it was intentional, was a long pause in the action, which made everyone wonder if the game had crashed. I don’t think I was the only one wondering if the cartridge needed to be blown in.

I went in large part because of the Paper Rad connection, but I really didn’t know much Beige beforehand. Though as I’ve recently discovered, they were the minds behind the I Shot Andy Warhol NES game, which is a modified version of Hogan’s Alley that I played at the Museum of Moving Images a few years ago during a video game exhibit. So I was expecting just some Paper Rad kaleidoscope and whimsy, but was also pleasantly surprised by the material’s depth.

Trust me, it’s not deep or anything like that, since it’s certainly not meant to be, though that didn’t stop members of the crowd from pontificating in an effort to look smart, especially for their dates. When I go to an art gallery or museum, I’m the type that basically shuts up and let the art soak it in. Nothing’s worse that pretentious art-fart types who dissect work right then and there in an effort to engage in an intellectual dick waving contest than if the subject matter is related to video games, cuz that’s when you look really stupid. But the subtext is there if you look for it, though having a healthy familiarity of NES games, the kind that can only really be developed a child firsthand, is a must.

I also appreciate any artistic attempt to exploit perceptions of video games, as long as it’s done with style, substance, and most importantly, simplicity. Another good example is, once again, and funny enough, yet another Super Mario Bros hack.

Anyway, the place was packed, though that’s no surprise considering Deitch is one of the hottest galleries these days, plus Paper Rad has developed quite the strong following (and as I discovered, Beige has plenty of fans as well). Also not surprisingly was some of the familiar faces; I ran into Bit Shifter and Nullsleep and was able to tell them how I the copies I made of the 8 Bit of Christmas went over really well with friends.

BTW, for those interested, one can download bits and pieces of the project right here. Interestingly enough, interspersed in each folder are components that aren’t in the final piece (or at least visibly so), such as dialogue. Perhaps it’s all stuff that fell on the cutting room floor, so to speak. One might hope that the Super Mario Movie might eventually be made for downloading (like his Super Mario Cloud, so long as you have an NES emulator to run it) but I think ultimately, its still best to see the whole thing projected on a wall, twenty plus feet tall, and all fuzzy like.

I Forgot/Even More Pics!

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

I totally forgot to mention this before, but during one day while back home, I ended up going to some western clothing store with my dad. He’s into that country and western stuff, though the pants that he got were comparatively normal when compared to some of the items they had, like huge cowboy hats and the such.

In addition to clothes, they had some pretty interesting stuff, like this tub of “Tropical Body Butter”. I’m assuming it’s for a woman to put on her vag when it becomes all irritated after riding a horse (or something comparable) for a good while. Excuse the poor pics btw, it’s from my camera phone (wish I had my Coolpix handy that day).

Folks, you would not believe how hard I try to bring up the “vag” in regular conversation each and everyday.

The place also had a nice collection of belt buckles, with this one being my favorite. Its funny cuz its true.

But best of all were a bunch of rodeo blooper tapes. I wonder what the bloopers are? Is it a rodeo clown actually gets his head ripped from his torso?

Or the testicles of the bull getting squeezed so hard that they explode. right in the face of some kid in the front row. Plus, I shudder to think what kind of “wacky” music the carnage plays out to.

Also, during my first weekend back, I went back to Chinatown with MK since she needed a birthday gift for a friend. We went down to the underground mall which has an absolutely insane amount of ultra cute and crazy stuff (as evidenced here), with my personal fave of the day being a huge stuffed hamburger that’s supposed to be a cushion (never before had I been so strongly tempted to purchase something so cute, yet so profoundly stupid and useless).

MK ended up getting this, which is a cell phone caddie, believe it or not…

So tomorrow’s a big day. In addition to the NJ IGDA meeting in the afternoon, I’m going to see the “Super Mario Movie” afterwards. But this one is a bit different from the 1993 classic…

… Here some more info…

“Super Mario Movie” by Cory Arcangel & Paper Rad

“it is a hacked 8bit Super Mario Brothers 1 cartridge.
i will hack the game cartridge and totally reprogram
it… so when you put in THIS cartridge, instead of
the game, you are presented with a 15 minute movie
using all original graphics from the game.”

… And here’s a look at how it was made…

I know there’s going to be annoy hipsters present, but I don’t care (I’m simply a sucker for using video games as “art”). Aside from the obvious bizarro video game connection, I’m a big fan of Paper Rad.

But tomorrow’s not just a big day for me, but for Joe (who’s responsible for that truly sweet drawing that adorns the bio page btw), who will being flying out to the Philippines tomorrow morning to attend a wedding from his childhood friends Rod & Russ’ family (nice guys, both of them). And besides the blessed event, he’ll be there for two weeks to soak up the sun, the culture, and all the exotic tastes (and no, I’m not talking about little filipino boys) that one can only get half way across the globe.

Or maybe not. Case in point, according to Joe himself, he’s bringing two suitcases along: one filled with clothes, and the other filled Hostess and Little Debbie snack cakes. Joe lives off junk food, and he’s well aware that any food over there, even if it’s something American like McDonalds or KFC, is simply “different”.

Anyone who knows Joe is well aware of his strong aversion to germs, so I’m just as shocked as anybody that he’s embarking on such a trip. And Joe has already predicted his own death, by the hands of cholera, or malaria, or hopefully, dysentery. In such an instance, I’ve asked him to call me during his final moments; I’ll record the conversation, and all the sounds, to compose the long awaited Clogged Arteries (Joe’s band) & Dysentery (my old death metal band from high school) power ballad.

God I hope he doesn’t die, otherwise, this post is gonna look especially stupid. Anyway, here’s some pics of Joe in the jungle from the man himself. The guy sure does love his Photoshop…

And finally, two more things I forgot to mention before:

1. Also while back home, I finally saw Run Ronnie Run which, as a diehard Mr. Show fan, I had always wanted to see. Christ did it suck. As far as bad 10 minute sketch to hour and a half movie translations go, it was seriously one of the worst. Again, could have been so awesome, and it’s not like most SNL movies where an ultra sappy, serious core drags things down, this one was just plain dumb.

2. Hey, it’s less than a month till my class happens. If you still haven’t done so, register right now!

What’s Going On?

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

So I’ve been back for just one week, and already there’s about a million things going on.

First off, I’ve been formally invited to participate in a panel discussion this coming April (on the 18th, my birthday!) for an event being held by SIGGRAPH and the IGDA. I’ll pass along more info as it materializes, of course.

Also, shortly before my Washington trip, at the Large Animal Christmas party, I was asked to help become a coordinator for the new online component of the NY IGDA, so I’ve finally joined up and am already working on some possible ideas to help stir up activity.

Meanwhile on the Jersey side of things, I’ve been invited to the next NJ IGDA meeting, which takes place this weekend. I’ll be going with a Nelson, who’s also been invited to show some cell phone related piece of gaming that he’s developed (you might also recall Nelson being the same guy that I’m doing my next game with).

Next week is another game night at the gameLab offices. In addition to beer, pizza, and board games, there’s a new game from the folks at gameLab that everyone is going to get the chance to playtest. Neat!

Also next week, EA is in New York City to show off a bunch of new titles for the PSP. This will be my first chance to handle the unit, so I’m pretty psyched (but not as much as my editor at Nick Mag, who seems about a hundred times more excited!).

I may as well mention that LucasArts was in town on Tuesday with some new Star Wars titles, which was no big surprise. But the real surprise was how totally awesome the new Star Wars Lego game is. I kid you not, it was easily one of the most fun to play Star Wars games that I’ve every played. One obviously needs to remember that the game is intended for little kids, but regardless, the action was fast and fun, the puzzle related elements were very well implemented, and the multiplayer features are hella fun.

Also, it’s just so darn cute! When I was playing as a protocol droid (that’s the same kind of robot that C-3PO is, for you non Star Wars geeks reading) the other player, playing as Liam Neeson, struck me with a lightsaber, taking out an arm and a leg and causing me to hop around. My Nick Mag companions and I also screamed with excitement at once.

As for non-game related activities, I’ve been busy putting the final touches on that book proposal, and thank God it’s almost finally finished. It’s taken much longer than expected, though my overly hectic schedule is the main culprit.

Plus the deadline for my submission for the next True Porn is now exactly one month away! Believe it or not, I’m still going to try and do something, regardless if I make the due date. In that case, I’ll simply have something to sell if I end up going to APE with MK this upcoming April, though I’m still on the fence with attending since it conflicts with this year’s I-CON, which I’m still slated to talk at.

And back to video games, I believe there’s another Gamers Nite Groove going on tonight, but I haven’t received confirmation from Job yet. I might attend, or I might just opt for staying home, since all the games I bought while in Washington has finally arrived (yes!). Then there’s the task of getting caught up in all the game related news I’ve missed out on (which at this point seems so daunting, I’m almost dreading it, as crazy as that sounds). But thus far, I know that…

Bungie has released the entire Marathon series (which are the precursor to Halo) as freeware

… Someone has already created a PSP media management tool for OS X (and yes, despite not having a PSP, I’ve already downloaded it)…

… This fake Hiroshi Yamauchi interview that was being passed around like it was real…

… There was another rumor floating around that Halo would appear on the Gizmondo (come on now)…

G4TechTV has formally announced the end of TechTV (what the forces behind G4 did was so pathetic)…

… Plus they have a new show called “Girls Gone Wired” which I already know is going to just make me very, very angry…

… There’s a Dance Dance Revolution game starring Mario coming out soon.
