Maybe I Don’t Want To Save Zelda (Part 2 of 2)

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

In this post:
1. Blah, blah, blah, blah, video games!

So, where were we? BTW, did you check out PART ONE yet?

- Hey, Metal Gear Solid fans…

- Via a Famitsu blog post, not sure what it’s supposed to be, but still quite neat nonetheless…

- For the ladies out there that are into Pokemon; Are you a Jigglypuff? Cuz I’m a Jigglypuff too!

- Is everyone aware of the existence of Ridge Racer for the iPhone and iPod Touch? Been playing with it for the past couple of days. And… it’s better than Katamari on the iPhone, that’s for sure. Still not saying much, I realize.

- Back to eroge, I realize that many don’t want to touch the stuff because they’ll feel weird violating some innocent girl, even if it’s just a video game. Well, relax, because despite what “she” might be expressing, either verbally or physically, it’s all consensual.

- Wanna check out some dude’s 100 strong Mega Drive collection? Well, since it’s from Rising Stuff, you should know already that there’s some seriously obscure stuff to be found!

- And speaking of collections, this page has a nice look at almost every single system that has existed, with a slight Euro slant.

- Vimeo seems to be the home for animated clips that are vaguely video game-like.

- Said it before, and I’ll say it again, it’s amazing what some people can do with just 64k.

- Yet another wacky music video featuring games and gamers of some sort as fodder; Dance Dance Revolution and… panties sniffing.

- Next up is Mega Ran, the nerdcore rapper, rapping about Splash Woman.

- And here’s another nicely animated clip featuring a bit of everything, including Virtua Fighters.

- Hey kids, let’s all learn our ABCs with a little help from Mega Man and all his robot friends.

- Remember “This Is Eno” from last time? Perhaps you’ve also heard that a special Michael Jackson PS3 package is coming out in Japan? Well, here we have the best of both worlds

- Related: MeowWalker

- While nabbing a copy, I also stumbled across the iPhone version of Twin Blades! Which wasn’t so bad on XBLA (via the Indie channel), so might pick this one up as well…

- Can I also state how idiotic it is that there’s something called The Simpsons Arcade game and it’s NOT a port of the amazing Konami title? They even have the blow up a character’s head like a balloon minigame for Christ’s sake!

I would have to assume it sucks like every other Simpsons game in existence that’s not the actual arcade title. Which might actually be better than TMNT Turtles In Time, IMHO.

- How much does a warehouse full of old arcade and pinball machines cost? According to a recently ended eBay auction, exactly $463,270.34. For all this…

- Speaking of eBay, it’s a place where game collectors have generally thrived, but as of late, thanks to various reasons, many old games are not as valuable as they used to be. GOOD.

- As noted at the end of that last link, Rival Schools is never coming to PSN, along with XBL I would have to assume. Which totally bites.

- So a huge regret from my trip to Japan was not picking up the Ikaruga Appreciate DVD, which I remember seeing in at least one store in Akihabara. Well, been trying to download a torrent ever since, and for seriously months now, I’ve been stuck at 47.68%. Maybe you two? Well, I’ve decided to say “f*ck it” and reclaim some hard drive space. As well as look for bits and pieces online. Not sure why I didn’t think of it before… and while I can’t seem to find someone that’s uploaded the entire thing, here’s the final chapter. I’ve also been on an Ikaruga kick, since getting the sticks.

Same dude also uploaded the last boss in DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu 1.5. Has it been announced for Xbox 360 yet?

- Back to Akihabara, here’s a ton of random photos of the place courtesy of Danny Choo

- Time to check out some toys! First up, a custom space marine from Doom for an upcoming Super 7 show…

- Touhou fans, yet another figure is up for pre-order. This time it’s Marisa Kirisame….

… And of course, there’s plenty more from where that came from! My personal fave character that’s not Reimu is Konpaku Youmu btw…

… Or maybe Izayoi Sakuya? I believe I like Griffon Enterprises’ Marisa better as well.

- Whereas those who are into robots might be interested in Omer Type-Lahire from Armored Core

- Plus we also have new desert camo Valken

… Perhaps this might be a good time to mention that I’m joining the Mecha Damashii crew! Details coming soon.

- Which is better? These custom Punch-Out figures or the custom NES Pro Wrestling ones? Sorry, but Starman for the win,,,

- May as well stick around Kotaku for a bit. Here’s a look at Cory Arcangel’s Super Mario Clouds that drove me nuts the first time I saw it, mostly cuz of the asinine reader’s comments.

- More recently, Stephen spotlighted a Kandinsky painting and claimed that it was not a video game screenshot. Guess someone has never heard of a little thing called Rez!

- Given the location of this subway stop, I’m more than certain that this Andross is the handiwork of a SVA student…

- Remember Chunk from the Goonies? He now gives legal advice!

- These days, Japanese Xbox 360 game developers have to do whatever they can to get attention.

- At long last, one of life’s greatest mysteries, finally explained.

- Check out this totally wacky Japanese arcade that’s themed like the back-streets of China! More than anything, I’m surprised that Kotaku of all people beat Sankaku Complex to the punch on this, whose always the first to go “LOL China!”

The funny part is, I actually passed by the place when I was in Kawasaki but never bothered to stop by! Color me feeling pretty stupid right about now.

- I’m only mentioning this post, about a con man who once claimed to have been working on a game based on the late 80s flick Road House, to remind everyone that I actually came close to creating a RPG based on another 80′s property, Charles In Charge, which will be detailed in the next installment of the fort90zine!

- And speaking of the zine, been trying to gather reference images for one of the contributors, and stumbled across this…

… Yeah, I don’t get it either.

- Time for a real quick stop over at Original Sound Version: I’m in the process of trying to get my hands on both the film Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, as well as its soundtrack. Not game related, so why bring it up? The music was scored by Kow Otani, the same maestro behind the Shadow Of The Colossus!

- And here’s a nice little interview with one of the men responsible for the sounds of Katamari.

- Plus here’s another legend in the world of game music working on something that has nothing to do with video games, but everyone loves Hip Tanaka, right?

- It’s funny/sad because it’s true!

- Some additional Noby Noby Boy goodness, also courtesy of Brandon, who’s basically its Facebook page’s biggest fan, as well as the game itself…

- It still pains me that Offworld is what it is these days, but thank God for his Tumblr

- It’s also thanks to Brandon that I discovered Bitboxland, aka my new favorite thing for the iPhone (even though I have zero idea how to really use it).

- Guess what time it is? Why, time to stop by absolute favorite place on the internet, Tiny Cartridge! For starters, Inazuma Eleven is finally coming out in the US? YES!!!

- Video games teach us many things, whether we realize it or not. Like Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out for example

- I’m reposting this for two reason: A) this piece is simply phenomenal…

… And B) the accompanying link about all of Link’s various shields throughout the Zelda series is required reading.

- For those who don’t feel like rubbing the naughty bits of young girls whom you suspect are witches, here’s a vid of the shump that’s contained within Doki Majo Plus. And as you can see, it?s surprisingly fleshed out.

- Or perhaps you just can’t play the game due to the heavy reliance on the Japanese language? Which is the prime reason why I haven’t gotten very far in any of them myself. Well, at least one of them is getting a fan-translation!

- I too want to play with “adorable baby tanks who are simply too cuddly and delicate for war?.

- Like everyone, I LOVE old video game commercials, especially if they’re from Japan. Hence why this assortment of old Famicom ads are so much fun to watch.

- There’s papercraft, and then there’s this

- I don’t know what’s more awesome: the happy new year postcard from Grasshopper Manufacture, or Japanese Amy Poehler!

- It’s always nice to see some love for UmJammer Lammy!

- As well as that miner chick from Little King’s Story

- The theme to Cave Story, as sung by Japan’s Ronald McDonald (who is simply so much cooler than his American cousin that it’s not even funny) via NicoNico.

- Nice to know that Eric is also a fan of David Sugar!

- What’s with the sudden proliferation of Spelunker related videos? Not that I’m complaining of course! It must be to 2chan as Mudkips is to 4chan.

Or maybe because the game recently got a revival on PSN? Yeah, maybe that’s why.

- Remember that dope-ass, but still unfinished NES arcade cab? Well wouldn’t you know… it’s finally finished.

- Well, it would seem that I should maybe pick-up the American version of Mega Man Official Complete Works after-all!

- This is what happens when you combine Luigi’s Mansion and Castlevania for the GBA…

- Note to self (and others): check out Houkago Play

- There is just something about the title track from the Game Boy Robocop game. Enough to sell washing machines apparently.

- Another big regret from the aforementioned trip to Japan (well, more like annoyance) was my inability to find the retro game culture shop that always has those amazing fake Famicom case exhibitions, METEOR. Cuz the place simply looks like heaven on earth.

- I guess I’ve been living under a rock as well, because I too totally missed out on this totally rad Hyadain vid.

- Time for another speedrun vid, this one featuring what many consider to be the worst game ever created for the Famicom, Takeshi’s Challenge. Which also happened to be the very first thing I wrote about when I used to do front page posts for Select Button!

- As stated many times over, Tiny Cartridge is simply your go to destination for oddball DSiWare titles that the rest of the world is too cool for school to be bothered with, like the very awesome looking Flipper.

- Along with bizarro iPhone apps/games from Japan.

- I thought I knew my Mega Man games, but had never heard of Rush Marine before. And as far as cell phone ports of the blue bomber, it doesn’t look entirely that bad! Which ain’t saying much, I realize.

- Even though it?s a few months away, anyone needing to nab the perfect birthday present for me when the time comes should look no further

- I pray to God that the box art to the American version of Last Window is as awesome looking as the Japanese version’s

- And this is just wonderful to look at, period…

- Definitely one of Sega’s better marketing ideas.

- LOL, Indonesia!

- Hachi Koi was cancelled? Well that sucks.

- Just like Eric sez, it’s like a Dutch version of Muramasa.

- How can I pass along a round of Tiny Cartridge links without also tossing out a super cute YMCK video?

- And a little something called Bird Week.

- Once again, Love Plus! These cell phone charms are simply supa kawaii!

- Have I mentioned that lonely Japanese men REALLY love that game?

- I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: God do I love it whenever video games and the world of fine art plus fashion collide

- Space Invaders tights anyone?

- Far less fashionable, but certainly functional, are the boxer shorts that Atlus is giving away to promote Metal Slug XX for the PSP. Now you too can dress like a POW! Wait.

- Check out this modded GameCube, as part of some chiptuner’s set-up

- For those who might have missed it, the latest Life Meter update features a battle of the ages, set to song

- Even though I don’t really play them, mostly because I flat-out suck at them, I’ve always been fascinated by the world of text adventures. And here comes a neat looking documentary that explores the subject matter called Get Lamp! Gonna try to nab a copy to review for GameSetWatch!

- And speaking of GSW, time to finally wind down this particularly colossal link round-up. BTW, do I have any New Year’s Resolutions? I do! To avoid having such long blog posts, so may well go out with a bang, right?

First up, I would KILL for a 2600 version of Tokyo Drift

- Anyone familiar with Polybius, this game that supposedly drove people to kill themselves and that was eventually seized by the government for being too dangerous? Well, it’s been remade

- To help kill time while waiting for Super Meat Boy the game, how about picking up an issue of the comic?

- Here we have Suda 51 embarrassing himself by playing Just Dance. As noted, it’s clearly a favor to the folks who are publishing No More Heroes 2, though he honestly should not have bothered, since they were gonna drop the ball when it comes to pushing it no matter what. The fact that he’s also interviewed by a Fragdoll is simply icing on the sh*t cake.

- A tabletop version of Pong? Hey, if Tetris the board game can work (and it does!), so can this.

- Finally, something for DJs who also happen to be arcade rats.

- Time for one last “best of 09″ list, but I swear, this one is totally worth it: the best 99 free games of last year.

- Not gonna lie, I geeked out hardcore for this sit down chat with Nasir Gebelli.

- From the same dude who made that mini Neo Geo arcade cab comes mini Outrun

- Some might (hopefully) recall that I checked out a pre-release DSiWare game at the IGDA Xmas party a few weeks back. It was Glow Artisan, and turns out that others have found to be awesome as well!

- I?m also hoping some will also remember that Wii game that’s played with a puppet. Well, here’s some footage demonstrating how it actually works.

- If you love games that utilize Guitar Hero/Rock Band controllers, but not the actual games themselves as much as I do, then you simply have to check out Battle Beat.

- The latest Bit.Trip game looks, not surprisingly, insanely awesome. Also be sure to check out this nice little interview with one of the dudes at Gaijin Games Is it any surprise that they’re fans of Rez? And remember that game they were making with Robotube at Blip? It’s finally available for play.

- You know that Space Invaders parody from Futurama? Well here it is again, as an actual game, Rush music and all.

- Semi-related: I absolutely love how the world of indie gaming has been overflowing with shoot’em ups as of late. It’s like the early days of the Genesis, all over again! Two random and recent examples: the history of shumps, as told via a video game. What better way, right? And one of the cooler aspects of Gala expanded upon many times over.

- This interview with one of the main architects (I’m guessing) behind Kill Screen basically confirm what myself and others have been suspecting all along: man does it ever sound like they enjoy the smell of their own farts! But seriously, someone pass along every issue of The Gamer’s Quarter to this person so he can finally understand that they’re not breaking any new ground here, nor does insightful video game journalism begin with that long-winded piece on Rock Band: The Beatles from the Times, which actually kinda made me hate the game and the Fab Four! Though I’m still undecided if its worse than the recent Bayonetta review, with it’s idiotic comparisons to Sarah Palin. Hooray for smarty-smarts writing about games to show us plebes the light!

- Oh God, how could I have possibly not know about the existence of not just one but TWO Segata Sanshiro Figures?!?! The same goes with the super duper edition of one of my fave Saturn games, Enemy Zero.

- I really need to either update my PSP’s custom firmware, or simply get a new one to play the latest games, cuz it’s driving me nuts that I can’t get my hands on Darius Burst, especially since I need a new fix of Zuntata like something fierce.

- Once again, my good pal Bryan has created another set of crazy awesome paperfoldables, this time featuring Bioshock 2

And speaking of, Katie, this is relevant to your interests

- For years I’ve loved sharing the true story behind the creation of Ms. Pac-Man, and how she was originally someone named Crazy Otto, but have never seen what he looked like. Until now.

- Fans of Assault Suits Leynos, take note!

- As I’ve mentioned many times already, I’m a fan of augmented reality and all the game related possibilities, but all the iPhone 3GS games that have promised such an experience have all bit the big one. Hence why the arcade might be the way to go.

- I love how Sega has decided to cash in on Jet Set Radio Future almost ten years later. Oh Sega…

- Hey, the creator of Cave Story has a new game out!

- I can’t help but repost this since I’m such a HUGE fan of Panic. Note to self: pick up one of their Noby Noby shirts ASAP.

- Now you can play all those crappy biblical games for the NES totally for free. And thank God for that. Seriously!

- And to close of this particular portion of GSW, yet another amazing installment of Sound Current, this one highlighting a recent even that could be best called the Comiket for remixers and chiptuners!

- Anyone still there? If so, time for one last round of links, from yours truly! For those who haven’t been stopping by Heavy on a regular enough basis…

Pikachu is the devil!

Modern technology sure is wonderful.

Witness the merging of Pong and slow-dancing?

The new Transformers game is looking alright, I suppose.

Tetris makes EVERYTHING better!

Air guitar functionality is finally coming to Guitar Hero and Rock Band!

Finally a Gamestop where I would mind buying their used games!

It’s like Katamari, except you’re a thief.

My other bold prediction for 2010!

8-bits sure does make an ugly boy look handsome.

Sega’s very awkward cross-promotion of Bayonetta with Playboy.

Your video game fashion forecast for the upcoming year.

And why the idea of a video gaming as a real sport is still a joke, and always will be.

Rejected Ways To Reboot Mickey Mouse (Part 1 of 2)

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

In this post:
1. All the batsh*t crazy/awesome game-related news and nonsense from the end of 09 and into the new year that everyone absolutely NEEDS to be acquainted with.

Alright, time for another gigantic link-dump! Been a while, hasn’t? The last time was way back in early December, and various attempts to do a final back to end the year were sidelined due to being busy with “stuff” (like covering Blip Fest 09, plus various other projects), as well as taking some time off for the holidays. I know it sounds ridiculous to act like surfing the web is some kind of job, but it sorta is to a certain extent!

So as a result, I have even more old news than usual (and as always, I’m more than confident that a good deal of it stuff that might have passed you buy, again due to the hectic holiday season). What else can I say, other than my obsessive compulsiveness sometimes get the better of me, though I’m glad to know that it is of legitimate use to some. Not everyone reads every video game blog out there like myself. And like always, if you get tired of reading, simply use your scroll wheel to make sure that you at least catch all the pretty pictures!

- Kicking things off is the big news (to some people at least) that there’s going to be a Shooting Game Historica Vol. 4! This is kind of a shock since many had assumed that the recently unveiled, super deluxe Thunder Force 5 kit was a sign that they were moving to larger, more detailed oriented pieces. So a pleasant surprise to see that they’re sticking with one coin figures to say the least. Though aside from Twin Bee and Xexex ships, the current batch doesn’t very exciting at all. Guess I’ll have to hope for a volume 5 to supply the Silpheed, Radiant Silvergun, and Ketsui crafts.

Oh, and here’s what Twinbee and Winbee looks like. Okay, I’ll buy after-all.

- Though the real big news is how this year’s Game Developers Conference, specifically Indie Games Festival, looks to be the biggest one yet. Once again, can’t wait for the show, and thankfully, thanks to Brandon, I will go prepared thanks to his very handy guide. Note: I tried doing something similar over at Heavy recently, and it totally blows in comparison, so much so that I’m not even gonna bother linking to it. Though in my defense, since Brandon is a judge, he has far more of an inside track on what to pay attention to then myself.

Thankfully, Simon says that I’ll be a judge next time! It’s too bad I wasn?t included this year, since with so many entries, 306 in total, they could have used the help!

- Also just around the corner, even sooner actually, is the Winter Olympics. So what better time than a DS game in which you play as a cute anime girl that wants to steal the gold with her magnificent figure skating skill? It’s called Kuru Kuru Princess Tokimeki Figure Mezase Vancouver, I think?

… Just watch the video which explains everything. Looks AWESOME: you have to work on your skating routines, design your outfits, date dudes, the game has it all!

- I’m guessing everyone has seen this image by now…

… That’s the first image from the new Scott Pilgrim move. My two cents? I’m still reserving judgment. Though not gonna lie: so f?n tired of Michael Cerra.

- This has also been linked all over the place, and for good reason: it’s a fantastic read. So for anyone who might have missed it, how success killed Duke Nukem.

- One of my favorite stories from the end of last year was hearing how GTA: Chinatown Wars bombed due to lack of marketing. Well, all I’m gonna say is… remember how I tried checking it out last year, at the New York Comic Con, but got the total run around from the Rockstar PR team they had? Most of whom (not everyone, mind you) could not be bothered unless you wrote for Kotaku or Joystiq? I rest my case!

Anyhow, I only bring that up because Capcom recently disclosed their own disappointment over the poor sales numbers for Zack & Wiki. Which is a fantastic game BTW, such a shame that hardly anyone played it. But guess what? I hardly recall ANY advertising of the game. It’s not like Capcom didn’t have the resources. I’m also a little tired of hearing third parties (with the resources to cope mind you, which not everyone does, I realize) bitch and moan about how hard it is to basically compete with Nintendo when it comes to producing a title for their platform. Like this hasn?t been the case, dating all the way back to the N64 days?

- Back to Rockstar: I guess they’re the new EA? Indeed, it certainly looks that way.

- Also via Gamasutra is another oldie but goodie, though it probably won’t mean much to 90% of the folks reading this blog. But if you’re personally involved in iPhone dev (as I somewhat am) it?s an absolute must-read: the creator of Canabalt explains how much riskier it is to price your iPhone app at $0.99 as opposed to $1.99.

- Here’s something that still blows my mind, yet hardly anyone has picked up on it, no matter how much I’ve talked it up on Twitter and Facebook: the soundtrack to an old Famicom game based upon Kazuo Umezu’s absolutely amazing The Drifting Classon which doesn’t actually exist! Note to self: get my copy of volume 1 back from Hilary. It’s one of those things that I have to read at least once a month. Did I ever mention that I LOVE horror manga?

- Anyone figure out yet what Metal Gear Solid: “Piece” Walker is supposed to be?

- Nintendo is set to organize a New Super Mario Bros Wii tournament in Japan! Will we finally get the sequel to The Wizard that many of us have been secretly hoping for many years now? At the very least the billboards they’ve set up are fairly neat…

- So Yatterman No. 2 is the latest (and perhaps finally) addition to the Tatsunoko vs Capcom USA roster, huh? That’s cool I guess…

… Makes sense since No. 1 is already in the game and now finally has his partner. Plus I would assume that both sides are now even (otherwise, that would kinda suck). Still, not quite the big announcement that’s been teased for a while now (everyone was expecting final confirmation that there’s going to be online play, though last I heard from Capcom directly, that was still the plan).

- It’s also been revealed that UDON is creating all new endings for the game! Gotta check with dmauro to see if the Japanese version even had endings. Something tells me no.

BTW, here’s Morrigan’s ending.

- Sticking with UDON, they’re also bringing Mega Man Megamix to America, which is apparently the finest manga adaptation of Mega Man ever created, according to my good pal Zack Giallongo. And since he knows his Mega Man, and comics, I’m totally excited, and you should be too!

- Another neat edition to the upcoming updated version of Tatsunoko vs Capcom is this shump mini-game. The commercial is in Japanese, where the game is being re-released, but I would have to assume that it’ll be included in the American version. At least I hope so!

- I have no idea what this is exactly, but as far as I can tell, the folks behind Mystery Science Theater 3000 made a video game?

- And let me get this straight: Steve Wiebe, of King of Kong fame, recently produced a Christian music album?

- Hironobu Sakaguchi would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year!

- I know many might not be less than thrilled to hear this, but the first major stop is gonna be Sankaku Complex. Feel free to skip the next couple of links if you’re so inclined, and for those that are willing to take the risk, just remember that the place has lots of NSWF imagery sprinkled about!

Though the main reason why everyone seems to hate the place (whereas I love it death, sorry) is how they pull no punches when delivering video game news, to the point that they appear to be looking for a fight. And maybe they are. Anyhow, in Japan, the big news is Final Fantasy 13, and they’ve been all over it like flies on honey! In addition to pointing out embarrassing bugs (which I’ve already covered over at Heavy), as well as how extremely linear the whole thing is, plus how it’s losing 15 gigs when it heads on over to the Xbox 360, there’s also the issue of it not performing up to snuff at the sales counter, as well as how many are flat-out disgusted by the whole thing!

Which might explain the changing of gears, including a possible move to the west when it comes to development and the existing formula being scrapped altogether. Which might be best thing to ever happen to the franchise! I also really enjoyed their dissection of one of it’s lead star’s wardrobe

- SC also loves pointing and laughing at Sony whenever possible, as do I. Most recent is this contrast of attitude towards the PlayStation 3′s capabilities between Naughty Dog and Kojima Productions. Hey, it’s a brand new decade and we’re still hearing complaints regarding the platform, and seeing deficiencies in action, with the most sterling example being the recent domestic release of Bayonetta (though Kojima’s sentiments were from a while ago, hence why bringing up such dirty laundry again is so upsetting to many).

- And speaking of Bayonetta… But be careful; lots of naughty drawings, though not everything. Some are actually quite nice!

- It would seem that Love Plus is still super popular. Again, NSFW. Yet believe it or not, it’s extremely tame in comparison to the hentai gallery that just popped up, which interested parties will have to search of themselves (not like that’s going to be difficult or anything).

- Though not nearly as perverted, yet perhaps even more depressing, was how many spent their Christmas in Japan with their virtual girlfriend (fun-fact: in Japan, Xmas is mostly a holiday for couples), aka Plus-mas

- This guy loves to draw animu chicks in bathing suits, lounging at the beach, and a good deal of it will make many feel uncomfortable, since many are… how shall we say… young looking? But at least he has a nice rendering of Athena and Reimu..

- Yet nothing beats Colossi from Shadow of the Colossues as animu chicks

- Not gonna lie: I totally want to mod my PSP like some of the ones featured here. Note: the first one is pretty crazy, but the rest are relatively tame… but still very much creepy.

- You can learn a lot about a person from just glancing at their computer desktop, though exemplarily taste in eroge/h-games didn’t come to mind upon seeing these.

- Speaking of eroge, you folks do know that soul cancer is quite strong in Russia, right? BTW, cute Russian cosplayers >>>>>>>>> cute Japanese Russian cosplayers, sorry. I know that’s racist and all.

- And speaking of copsplay, another taste of Comiket 77: Japanese cosplayers are, if anything, dedicated. Every report states that it was cold as hell at the time. Though this guy is easily tops every sexy lady pictured…

- Here?s an ultra cute female Link that accompanied a post about that Zelda fan film that Nintendo put the smackdown on (which I already wrote about at Heavy, FYI). Which of course I just had to share here…

… I hope that’s a girl. Not 100% sure to be completely honest!

- Headline: Wii Fit doesn’t really work.

- Even better is how the brain of game addicts are similar to those of drug addicts.

- As much as I shouldn’t be so open about it, (since it’s so damn creepy), but my burning desire for a domestic version of Dream Club simply gets worse and worse

… It?s crazy how it absolutely has something for everyone! I’ve never been into BDSM, but if you are, knock yourself out!

- Back to Comkiet, and Russia to a certain extent, folks over at figure.fm have been posting pictures of their loot for the past couple of days, and not surprisingly, most of it is porn. Though this person did manage to get something that I’m dying to see the inside of, since I’m a Touhou Project fan and all…

- The one-thing amazes me about these gigantic hauls is how much money must have been spent. Then again, some killer deals can be found in Japan. What can you get for $10 at a Gamestop here in the States? Not much. Meanwhile

- I guess the last thing anyone needs right now is yet another best of the decade list, but Radio Free Videoland’s top 7.5 games deserve special attention. RFV’s Twitter also deserves actual attention. With such killer “tweets” (God I that word) like….

“BREAKING: the original pilotwings cannot legally be released because the level themes are all tito puente songs played backwards”

“the new gf is into bubble bobble roleplay but i don’t really want to spit on her.”

“the world ends with you sequel about disaffected wisconsin goths is now a co-production with vice magazine”

…Pure comedy genius!!!

- I’m getting a laptop! Which I’m more than a little excited for; gonna be a MacBook. Yes, the non-aluminum, non-Pro model. Why? Cuz the specs are pretty much identical to the 13 in Pro, plus $300 cheaper. Okay, so there’s no SD card slot, which sucks since I LOVE SD cards, but I can live. Anyhow, time to get ready, like invest in a laptop sleeve. Maybe this one

- And I’ve always needed a case for my glasses

- I absolutely love this piece of fan art (sorry, but I have no idea who the original artist is)…

- Same with this love Chrono Trigger one…

- Along with this awesome Tales of Vs. inspired Persona image…

- Even better is this

- Though best of all is Persona 4 in the style of Mother/Earthbound!

- As always, the fine people at Pixiv never fail to impress

- So I just started playing Valkyria Chronicles. Was (and maybe still is) $20, new, at Gamestop, which I couldn’t pass. My previous brushes with the games left me feeling a bit “meh”, but decided to give it a real earnest shot, and figured that if I maybe started from the beginning, I’d finally warm up to it. And thus far…

… I think I’ve finally been able to put my finger on why I can’t dig in. I realize it’s a tactical RPG and understand how they work, since I’ve played and even enjoyed Advance Wars. But I just find the real-time action sequences to be extremely awkward due to them being forced to adhere to overall structure of the genre’s conventions. Basically, stuff that makes sense from high above, looking down like God, make zero sense when you on the ground, in the thick of the action.

Still, I’m now officially interested in the franchise, hence why I am now paying attention to the sequel, which was already up my alley since it takes place in school.

- And since we’re already here, may as well check out some of the more notable recent findings from Siliconera! Like how Glory of Heracles is finally coming to America! Been interested in that one for some time now (sorry, but I’m somewhat of a sucker for any game that deals with Greek Mythology… though oddly enough, not the world’s biggest God of War fan, for various reasons). Though mostly because of the character artist, whom I’ve been a fan of for a while now (yet I have no idea what his or her name is)…

- One of the things I love so much about the place is their eye on the eroge market, which is handled in far easier to handle manner than Sankaku Complex (sorry artefact), like this intriguing interview with a marketing distributor who asked to remain anonymous. Basically, no matter what you’re selling, even if it’s loli-rape simulators, it’s a tough business, especially these days!

- And here’s one in which the question of why certain titles never make it over here is addressed.

- On a semi-related note, more and more on this side of the ocean is trying to create visual novels, like Spirited Heart. It’s too bad that the graphics are always not nearly as good (with the only exception that immediately coming to mind being Katawa Shoujo).

- I’m ecstatic that Korg DS-10 Plus is coming out in America, and will be widely available, but not so sure about that box-art.

- Has anyone out there checked out that Game Arts game yet, their first in like ten years? Too bad it’s not Lunar 3, but it’s a start.

- Speaking of, Lunar 1 is making another return, and this time it’s gonna be funny again. Though I’m fairly certain that the fine folks at Xseed are going to avoid stupid Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky jokes this time around.

- No word yet whether Espgaluda II will be region free or not. If not, gonna be might depressed and angry! But it sure looks like it will be, given that it’s in English and will supposedly be more accessible than any other previous Cave offering.

- Speaking of shmups, a remake of Gunbird 2 is coming out for the PSP, and I guess it’s US bound? Via the PlayStation Network. Strange how it’s a vertical shooter yet the screen orientation is horizontal.

- Yay, another one is making it out onto DSiWare that we’ll never get the chance to play.

- Then there’s Photo Fighter X, which I can at least see this one possibly coming over…

- Meanwhile, there’s pretty much a snowball’s chance in hell that we’ll ever see a localized version of this Korean drama on a cart. Which I’m actually the most bummed out about since I LOVE Korean soap operas.

- Remember that other RPG Atlus is publishing featuring high schoolers, dungeon crawler, and tarot cards? It’s called Tokyo Mono Hara Shi and here’s what the opening looks like.

- As for Persona 5, where is it? Well, some folks might be working on it this very second!

- Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman 2 is coming to UMD after-all! Plus the first one is going to be included on disc!

- Coropata sounds pretty interesting, if only because I’m a fan of Incredible Machines gameplay, though I also hear it’s not particularly good.

- Yes, I know about the Dead Or Alive PSP package that comes with the Kasumi figure and intend on picking one up!

- There’s a BlazBlue DSiWare mini game?

- Hearing that the sequel to Radirgy/Radio Allergy is coming to the US is great and all, but it’s definitely one of those I’ll see it when I believe it kind of things.

- Another great thing about Siliconera is how it’s like the only outlet that will seriously address the must maligned (and for good reason I guess) Queen’s Blade PSP title.

Though by far the greatest part, and it’s something that pretty much EVERYTHING should incorporate (not just video games) is its panic button, by turning everything explicit looking into a mess of 8-bit!

- Yet another reason why I’m psyched for Ghost Trick: Phoenix Wright is in it!

- One thing that’s been the subject of much talk as of late is the DS, which will supposed incorporate motion control, like an iPhone (oh God). Funny thing is, it’s already possible via the DSi’s camera.

- Rockin’ Android is providing content for the PS3? Sweet.

- Everyone is all hot and bothered that Muscle March was recently rated by the ESRB, and I would be too if I didn’t already know that it sucks. I on the other hand am far more interested in something called Full Blast Hitchhike.

- Check out what a Xbox 360 kiosk goes through in Japan over the coarse of one year. The system just can’t get a break in Japan, can it?

- Naoto Ohshima, the guy that many believe really created Sonic is working on a new mascot platformer? Interesting! He also claims that Sonic’s shoes were inspired by Michael Jackson!

- Still sticking with Sonic, Zack also passed this one along; another YouTube vid of some orchestra playing classic video tunes, in this case a Sonic 2 medley, but it’s actually quite superb. While certainly rough around the edges, it still blows away all that Video Games Live nonsense. Sorry Tommy. Also, God damn did the Genesis Sonics have some amazing music!

- Totally different, yet very much the same: the Zelda theme as performed via tesla coils.

- Remember that Jay-Z/Battletoads mash-up I heard at Blip Fest? Found it!

- Also remember that awesome Nullsleep shirt I picked up at the show? Here’s a better look

- Too bad I wasn’t able to get my hands on enso x NO CARRIER tee, since I wasn’t a Kickstarter donator…

- Yes, I too have seen the 30th Anniversary Pac-Man buns…

- Cave is making an iPhone game? And it stars Reco? And it’s kinda like Geometry Wars?

- And here’s a few photos from the latest Cave festival, which I would have given my left nut to attend. Mostly to pick up this sweet looking Ketsui model…

… Along with the DoDonPachi underwear…

… Plus Reco full-body blanket. Sorry.

- Check out this totally killer Silent Hill cosplay

- We’ve all enjoyed watch Arino play the classics, Final Fantasy 13? Just as enjoyable!

- People who enjoy the work of pixel artist eBoy, as well as those interested in donating to a good cause, might want to fork over some green to pick up this poster, which is part of Amnesty International’s Poverty Is Modern campaign

- eBoy fans might also be in the iPhone game Beat It. Note: I have no idea of eBoy is involved, but it sure does look like his stuff, doesn’t it?

- Any Swedish readers out there? If so, did you check out the Silent Hill stage adaptation?

- Damn-it, and I just picked up that Famicom business card holder I mentioned not too long ago. Should have waiting just a but, since I’m now far more interested in Mega Drive version

- Via GamOvr, mostly since it was the first place to pick up on it: a somewhat NSWF teaser pic, I guess, for the next Vanillaware game. Whatever the hell it might be, I just hope there’s an f’n jump button. PLEASE.

- This is how you trick out your MacBook Pro…

- I’d definitely play Team Fortress if it was a top-down 2D game for the GBA

- Still a big fan of pixelstyle, as usual…

- Another neat Tumblr, one that I just stumbled across, is entirely dedicated towards the Ace Attorney series. It’s chock full of nothing but stuff like this…

- Not sure where I found this one; a bunch of dudes playing Rock Band, but all dressed as, well, you know…

- I have no idea how something like this could have gotten leaked…

… To be continued in PART TWO

Keep Movin’

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

In this post:
1. Details from me and Katie’s adventures on the road.
2. Plus plenty of pics, mostly from the Digital Press store!
3. And my two cents regarding James Cameron’s Avatar.
4. Along with some of the gf’s comics!

Katie and I got a car! Sorta. Katie signed up for a Zipcar account, and much of Saturday was spent on the road…

During the day, we combed the Garden State for various ingredients for her party on Sunday; the first stop was Target, Katie’s favorite all-in-one shopping center, where the concept of buying in bulk was finally introduced into my mind, via the 20-pound box of Frosted Flakes that I nabbed for just $8!!!

Here’s the thing about Manhattan: easily one of the most annoying aspects to living on the island is grocery shopping. Everything is way over-priced, plus the overall quality is frankly pathetic, especially when it comes to produce. Manhattanites try pointing towards the farmer’s market at Union Square, I want to punch a wall because the stuff found here marginally better than the sh*t found at the local grocery stores AND about four times as much. Sorry, but I grew up near an actual farmer’s market, so I know what is up. Even the local, upscale white person’s grocery store totally blows; sure the selection is grand, but everything is six hours from spoiling. Sure there’s Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s here, but the wait for the check-out is a minimal hour wait, even in the ten items or less line, and no I am not exaggerating. The problem is so bad that, and not sure if it’s in your neck of the woods, but we have something called Fresh Direct, which does your grocery shopping for you. But aside from spending $9 on a box of Ritz crackers, the quality of the produce is again rather lame. Why am I going on about this, especially since they don’t sell fruits and vegetables at Target? Because I’m coming close to my fourteenth anniversary of living in NYC and have yet to find a place that sells decent tomatoes, which seriously bums me out. Okay, it’s not all doom and gloom, at least in the other boroughs; I’ve been grocery shopping with Hilary and Dave Roman in Queens, and the veggies I encountered were quite nice. Plus when I live in Brooklyn, the farmer’s outlet in Sunset Park I frequented was actually quite nice. But I digress.

Check out Katie in front of P.F. Chang’s!

… Every time we pass by the place on our way to Mitsuwa via the shuttle bus, we keep saying how one day we’re gonna eat there. Finally made it inside at long last, and stayed a grand total of a minute and a half. Because that was enough time to look over the menu, which looked both unexciting and overpriced! So the next stop was H-Mart, the Korean superstore.

I’ve been able to properly convince Katie that when you get down to it, Korea is far and away more bizarre than Japan, which gets all the attention in that department, though it was nice for her to witness this first-hand. It’s funny how Korean marketplaces, when compared to Japanese ones, often accurately reflect their homelands as a whole; they’re far grungier and totally chaotic. I can say this since I am one and all: the stereotype that Koreans cannot drive exist for a reason because it’s 100% true. Be fortunate that you’ve never run into a gaggle of them on the highway, and to see what I mean, just bear witness to them inside H-Mart, all behind shopping carts.

Our favorite moment was watching one old lady trying to pass another, who was blocking an isle due to being lost in conversation. After saying “excuse me” in an extremely low voice that no one could have made out, and was only uttered so she can state that she said something after the fact, the first lady simply rammed the second with her cart. You simply had to be there. Another great thing is that there are free samples given out all over the place, mostly administrated by cute Korean chicks! Half of whom are never around and flirting with the stockboy, halfway across the store, so you basically come across lots of grills that are on but with no one keeping an eye on them.

I’m also kicking myself for not taking a picture of the wacky food that could be found, primarily something that can only be described as some form of sea-life that resembled a chicken leg from the Planet Zebes. At least I had enough sense to snap one of this wacky ice cream snack…

And here’s a bag that Katie stumbled across in one of the gift shops…

Plus a gigantic Zeta Gundam that I would love to get my hands on, but I’m assuming it’s expensive as hell, plus it’s not like I have the room for it. Ollie, if you’re reading this, have this one already? Stupid question, I realize…

BTW, the cafeteria there totally blows away the crap found at Koreatown (yet another annoying thing about Manhattan), primarily the fried chicken, which Katie claims might be best she’s ever had in her life. As for groceries, I got a ton of candy that I used to enjoy as a child, plus a ten-pound jar of kimchee. Next stop was a place I’ve been dying to check out for years and finally made it: the Digital Press retail store!

A few years back, my ex tried taking me there, but we literally drove around in circles for like a solid hour in Cliffton in trying to find the damn thing, and never made it, hence why I figured that I would never get the chance to bask in it’s glory. Thank God for the iPhone’s Google Maps plus GPS! Anyhow, it’s a sleepy little indie game store that happens to sell EVERYTHING, from the latest PS3 titles to old N-Gage carts. It?s hard to tell, I know, but they even had a Pippen on display, which I had never seen before ?in the flesh? (though I have actually messed around with an Amiga CD32, which is right next to it)…

There’s a nice little arcade in one corner of the store…

Plus this tabletop Pac Man machine that was just there, out in the open, for anyone to play around with (whereas in VideoGamesNY, it’s behind lock and key with a $800 price tag). Though as you can see I was mostly interested in the Virtua Fighter marquee right below it…

Lots of wacky hardware was all over the place, including the entire line of Generation Nex gear (to bad the actual quality is sub-par, or so I’ve been told)…

And check out this portable SNES unit…

I have no idea what Mega Man Ultra is supposed to be, do you? And in case anyone was wondering, I’m getting a new camera soon, so crap pictures like this should be a thing of the past, hopefully…

Classic gaming posters and related paraphernalia was all over the place…

Though my favorite items would have to be the assorted indie published zines and books; I came super close to picking up the one on the right…

… There was a passage about the author’s excitement over the SNES version of U.N. Squadron upon its arrival that totally won me over, but I’m sorta poor these days, so I had to pass (it’s not super expensive at $15, but I’m on a somewhat tight budget till a few way overdue checks arrive). It also needs to be stressed how reasonably priced everything is. If you’re looking for an older title, regardless of platform, screw eBay and simply call this store!

The people who go there are also a total trip. Imagine every socially stunted dork that you find trying to talk a Gamestop employee’s ear off by talking shop, since they unfortunately have no one else who can at least understand what the hell they’re going on about (and who mostly ignore such eccentric individuals kindly, as try to get on with their jobs). Now, add about an additional 35 years and you get a few of the folks found here. I could have sworn the guy awkwardly professing his love for Tron, in a manner in which he was hoping somebody, anybody, would engage in a 30 minute conversation with him, is someone that I’ve seen at ICON for years now.

As for what I picked up, first off…

The Donkey Kong cards are easily my favorite, mostly because I remember desperately wanting a pack as a kid, but my dad refused to for over the quarter for a pack. So at long last, almost thirty years later, they are finally mine…

The best part is how Mario is prominently featured, back when he was simply known as “Jump Man”!

As you can see, some are actually interactive, with their own set of rules…

Here’s the gum that came with them, which I’m fairly certain is still edible! Though I have no idea if I’ll actually ever pop them in my mouth…

Next up are the Nintendo Game Packs, which covers Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda, Punch Out, and… Double Dragon?

The Super Mario Bros: The Movie ones were definitely not as exciting. Like most cards based on films, all you really want is a nice shot featuring all the stars or at least a cool scene, and I wasn’t lucky in either regard…

Time to move onto reading material. Here’s something called the Video Game Trader…

… It’s chock full of articles covering various classic games and abandonware, with a heavy emphasis on the homebrew scene, mostly for Atari 2600, Commodore 64, NES, and other systems of that era…

… There’s also a price guide featuring estimated values of assorted classics games, though how these numbers are formulated is a mystery to me. Moving on, here we have two issues of the zine that the store produces (with a name like Digital Press, it’s hardly a shock, I know)…

… It too is overflowing with content. Articles cover all the usual territory: forgotten classics, homebrew offerings, various anecdotal musings, plus interviews. I especially liked the one that’s all about the arcade featured in the early 80s sitcom, Silver Spoons…

… I also LOVE the extremely low-fi and utilitarian format. I’m sure some might laugh at the single staple in the corner keeping everything together, but 28 pages worth of goodness for just two dollars cannot be beat. Though this one clearly takes the prize…

… Because I haven’t had a chance to read it top to bottom, I have no idea what the heck it’s supposed to, other than perhaps a supplemental zine, covering much of the same ground as the regular edition (it’s apparently another Digital Press production). But hey, another close to 30 pages worth of content, and for just two bucks? Well worth every penny spent.

One constant message is that one can buy ten of yesterday’s games for the price of just one of today?s, which definitely is a valid notion. Though the reviews are still a bit baffling, which covers such fare as TMNT for the GameCube and SpyFiction for the PS2. I guess the message here is that clunker that just came out for the PS3 yesterday that no one cares about right now will eventually be obsessed over by zines such as these in a few years time!

And finally, far and away the greatest catch was this…

… Featuring cover art by the late, great Patrick Nagel. Nevermind that it’s for the Commodore 64, the thing was just $5!!! Again, some insanely killer deals can be found at the Digital Press store!

Back to our trip: afterward we went to Mitsuwa to pick of some Japanese goodies for the shindig; after the insanity that was H-Mart, the place just seemed so dull in comparison. Still, you’re not gonna find a better beef bowl anywhere in the tri-state area! Next was Trader Joe’s, which was just down the street, and it was wonderful not having to deal with a bunch of NYU douchebags, as well as having everything in stock. You can show up at the Union Square location at 10:30 in the morning, when they just open up, and everything still gonna be sold out. Unfortunately, most of the people who shop there are still obnoxious, all of whom are also from the city!

By this time it was evening, which meant a trip to Queens to hook up with Joe Salina. And thus our road trip because an exercise in frustration; I know I’m repeating the obvious here, but Google Maps is pretty much worthless in Queens and Brooklyn, and we got lost something fierce. Not helping is the abysmal signage that NYC is known for. But eventually we made it to Joe’s and over to the local mall, so catch a late night viewing of Avatar! And how was it? Christ, did that movie ever suck. I sorta knew that I wouldn’t like it, but ended up hating it far more than initially expected.

On the plus side, the special effects were also far better than expected; at a certain point, I completely forgot that I was watching nothing but CGI. But I believe a lot of it had to do with the fact that everything was in 3D; aside from being somewhat distracted by everything popping out at you, the image was also not as crystal clear, so it wasn’t easy to notice how little things were “off” like you would with a clear, HD image (that’s not to say that you need high definition to notice not so stellar computer graphics).

The action sequences were also phenomenal. But otherwise…. I’m not going to give it flack for being thoroughly unoriginal, plus how it’s an exceedingly straightforward rip of Pocahontas (which it was, but everything these days is pretty derivative), though I was fairly offended by how sloppy the film’s logic was, considering that Cameron’s previous sci-fi flicks (Terminator 1 & 2, Aliens) were a bit more tight on that end. At the very least, it sure as hell did not feel like the future; it’s comforting to know that in the 22nd Century, video blogging will still exist. Many things simply did not make any sense, and the film as a whole was not good enough to make one forget or ignore these issues.

Though the primary issue was the three-hour length; it’s clear that Cameron had to prove something, and the only way he could do it was shove as much bullshi*t down the viewer’s throat. Before the movie began, this dude in front of us in line asked how many times we had seen it. After stating it was our first, he mentioned that it was his fourth time seeing the movie, and all I could think throughout was “holy sh*t, some dude has now spent about 120 hours and $60 on this piece of crap” (plus the dude was with a lady friend, so that price tag is easily more so, especially when you factor is the astronomical price for popcorn and soda, which this dude also had with him).

The next day, yesterday, Sunday, was Katie’s party for her lady friends (and a few of mine as well). Basically, everyone brought over clothes that they no longer needed or have never worn for whatever reason, to either swap or simply pass along to Katie, which she will then donate to the local church. Colleen gave me a sweet looking First Second shirt, and that was pretty cool! I was also pleasantly surprised that my arcade sticks managed to impress everyone. But hey, they are pretty sweet after-all.

After all the women folk all chose their new threads and chowed down on Katie’s delicious handmade pigs in a blanket, we entertained everyone with various horror stories relating to our crazier ex’s. Funny thing is how we both have histories related to Pizzeria Uno!

Alright, back to work, but before I go, for those how haven’t seen it yet, #4 of Katie’s Nurse Nurse can be found online over at Arthur, plus the first couple of pages of her newest comic, Beegirl, can be found over at Katie’s LiveJournal!

I’ll be back tomorrow with another impossible to sift through mess of game related links and images. Wait for it!
