So the Transformers "widescreen" is some fakery. Hmmm. This is typical of the period. A lot of live-action was shot "full screen" (e.g., 4:3) and matted in theaters (and later on Laser and DVD discs).

There was an issue of this when the Back to the Future trilogy was released on DVD. Those who bought the first run of the set (me!) found that there where framing issues (forget if it was part 1 or 2), cuz the transfer from print to DVD was goofed and the picture was shifted down too far revealing some image at the top (and conversely trimming the bottom).

I was actually going to check and see if that was true (that was always the explanation behind the widescreen Japanese LaserDisc), but just never got around to doing my own comparion. I guess its good that it also includes the fullscreen version (and the reason behind it).

I also checked the review over at IGN to see if any mention of a falsified widescreen version version, but there wasn't anything. Then again, its fucking IGN, what else can one expect?

Hey, at least the widescreen version is anamorphic, and that has to count for something right?

Plus, at least the DVD also dispells the Leonard Nimoy doing all of Orsen Wells' voices rumor.

There actually isn't a widescreen version of Transformers: The Movie. If you compare the widescreen and fullscreen transfers on the new disc, you will find that the widescreen version is a matted version of the fullscreen transfer.

Basically, Peter Chung (the creator of Aeon Flux) was working on Rugrats at the time and a colleuge of his at Colossal Pictures (the studio that produced Liquid Television) knew how miserable he was, hence why the friend gave Chung an opportunity to do something for the new show. And he seized the chance to do a cartoon that was the anti-thesis of Rugrats, at least in his mind. So yeah, there's no love between him and that show, and given that I'm a big fan of the edgy stuff on MTV/Nick at the time, and the effect that Rugrats, and to a lesser extent Doug, had, I'm inclinded to not take issue with his beefs!

There's a connection between Aeon Fluxx and Rugrats?!?!

Enlighten me, please.

I'm unique in that I watched both of those shows in the same timeperiod, being on the extreme edges of both demographics.

Yeah, all the kid's eyes are glowing green for some reason. I believe the effect was there originally, to make them seem "Transformer-y", since their voices are altered to sound electronic. Which anyway, is extra freaky.

I guess they couldn?t get certain clearances, so they had to blur out the faces of all the child actors in them, and the results are pretty freaky.

I need to see this.

I'll talk to Lisa about that mythical copy of Funky Forest she's supposed to have. I don't know if I can face another year without seeing a middle-aged Japanese man spurt milk from his distended nipple at a co-ed with a tennis racket.
