sonictail: Yeah, you’re talking about the focus dot. Works remarkably well for someone like me, who gets dizzy within a few minutes of Half Life 2. Then again, I’ll have to sit down with the game for a good solid 30 minutes to tell if it really works, especially later one when I would imagine a million things are happen all at once. And unlike Portal, I’m pretty sure turning down the mouse look speed/sensitivity more or less breaks the game.

And your assessment of idiots in NYC is fairly spot-on. But half the fun is watching people transform for whatever reason. Like aforementioned transplants, like the dumb 18 year old girl from Kansas that’s all bubbly and well-mannered her first week in the city turn into either some loudmouthed idiot wearing CBGB shirts in an effort to look and act all “New York” or play the part of some world worn sage that all of a sudden has a wide-eyed view on everything (granted, there’s more to see and soak in when you come to the Big Apple, as compared to the midwest, but it often goes overboard). Then you have other kinds, like the white guy that’s so ultra liberal and mindful of the black man’s struggle, then watching him slowly become bitter and intolerant after living in Crown Heights or Harlem for just a few months.

thanks for the download on the EA night, I just got a similar account from a traders hall for a certain large retail company, but at five minutes a piece he didn’t get through much. I do believe that mirror’s edge had a single icon in the middle of the screen to help avoid feeling sick.

also, i really do not get new york, hell i’ve been reading your stuff for years now and I still don’t have a good picture, it just seems to be too many idiots crammed into a stupid location and no memory of why the hell they did it in the first place.

but hey, give us a good rant on “people taking over our shit”… I’m all upf ro that!

the thing about park slope that confuses me is the number of jerkoffs who live there; truly rude people who have never been pummeled by strangers with poor impulse control and a serious investment in the notion of decorum. now, most people go “oh it’s the [ibankers/hated group with money]” but that doesn’t explain why other rather expensive neighborhoods aren’t like that.

for example: brooklyn heights has been a neighborhood for rich people for well over 150 years, and yet you don’t see that same kind of behavior.

i find it very, very odd.

the american apparel, as we’ve gone over, doesn’t bother me in the slightest – nothing on that street matches anything – but i also don’t spend much time on smith street if i can help it. very crowded. i don’t see much of a difference between a boutique clothing joint that sells $300 handbags and the like and a mainstream faux-boutique clothing joint that sells some reasonably-priced things.

and there is a starbucks on smith street, as well as one on court street. it’s not far from rocketship iirc.

i would trade it all in to get halcyon back but the market has spoken.

dhex: I forgot to mention that Carroll Gardens is yet another really awesome part about Brooklyn, though I already did mention Rocketship. But by that accord, that would also mean that Park Slope (which is where Chip Shop is located) is okay in my book, and that place is most definitely hell on earth. Also, as much as I love Smith Street, that American Apparel is still a fucking eyesore and a sigh of things to come, I’m sorry. At least there’s no Starbucks, or one that I can remember.

Jason: The more I read up on the original, the more it becomes apparent that it and the remake are virtually identical, right down the dialogue, so I guess the key difference, and the only thing the first one really has going for it is Mifune.

yes but a) that lacks the snobbish cultural frisson aping the slogans of long dead fictional characters – which i think is what adbusters was complaining about, or something – and b) it’s a bit obvious.

i mean, were i to see joe or you and not know you, i’d probably think it was a cutesy shirt (matt would think “fucking hipsters” i presume) rather than the blazing comet of spiritual wisdom found in the original slogan.
