If it's a renewal and you have <i>more</i> than two weeks, your best bet might be to go through the passport office and get it expedited. It costs an extra sixty bucks or so, but it works. This is what I did when I was running out of time before my Paris trip, and it worked beautifully. Just be sure to go to a post office with a passport agency (I used the big one near Borough Hall) and check everything out before you mail off your stuff-- the harried clerk there pointed out that my passport photos sucked and would probably get rejected, and gave me the address of a guy who did good work a couple of blocks away.
