Having worked retail for, oh, way too long, I can safely say that Best Buy screwed you over. There are so many times where I've watched my salaried managers above me return items way over the return date in order to properly take care of a customer. Hell, I authorized the return of a camera that was over six months old which we didn't carry in my store because it still had the box and the defect was RIDICULOUS. The managers over there were just assholes... which probably doesn't make you feel much better, but still.

i've never had any problem with best buy myself, but it's not like i shop there a lot or whatever. i think it would have made more sense in the long run for them to honor the terms of the contract even though it had expired, at least in terms of shipping and man-hours wasted on trying to repair it, and to answer his service calls and the like. matt is a special case. this could be lazy management, or an overworked cust. service department that has no real incentive to improve.

my only real "bad" retail run-in was with a gamestop employee some years back when i was unemployed, and that boiled down to me not feeling like explaining why i didn't want to make gamestop money by signing up for their discount card. the kid got pissy and said "i guess you don't like saving money." and i said "nope." i know it's his job to be a dick or whatever, and for some strange reason the "hard sell" lives on, though it is clearly counterproductive.

for cameras, b&h is a good joint in the city, and their prices are good. and their pro audio section is neat!

Why the bloody hell do you put up with these people? I'm partly of the opnion that their mood is brought on by low wages, but it really does make me wonder. Hell here if someone tries and pull a class act on you, you just go state a claim to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission {ACCC} and while it takes some time, there's almost always a boot placed in somewhere.

But back to the earlier point, why does anyone in america put up with shopping at Best Buy, Frys or any other of the massive chains?

Steve: Like I said, I went to Best Buy because I figured I'd save some money and that sales people in Jersey would be easier to deal with. Wrong and wrong. I know now that I fucked up and am obviously paying for it. What can I say, other than I was both lazy and stupid, which is why pieces of shit chain retail outlets make so much money, i.e. Best Buy, Gamestop, Wallmart, etc.

Pat & Liz: As silly as I would feel appearing on the local news, I'm kinda at my wits end here; I tried contacting the Better Business Bureau where that Best Buy resides, and again, I'm on hold forever. Same fucking story...

Call the Fox 5 Problem Solvers! SERIOUSLY. Please do. We almost always watch Fox news because it comes on before the Simpsons and it's actually pretty hilarious (sometimes I think they don't think anyone's even watching, the way they constantly flub basic words and phrases or show the wrong clips).

Does your local TV news have a "consumer advocate"? That's who I'd call if it happened here in Pittsburgh. They love that kind of stuff, because you're basically helping them to fill up their 3 hours of evening "news", and I would think it's in Best Buy's best interest to fork over the lousy $200 just to avoid the bad publicity.

Honestly, unless you're just picking up DVDs, there really isn't a reason to shop at Best Buy.

When you want a camera, you really should have just went to B&H. I went a week before SDCC this year to get a new camera. The old Jewish man who sold me the camera was very helpful, and helped me decide on which camera met my needs the best. He actually knew what he was talking about, which is a bonus. Of course they tried to sell me a package with extra batteries, memory cards, and a carrying case, but I never needed them before, so I skipped it. He warned me though, to watch out for the LCD screen, because if it broke, the camera was done for. I turned down the extended warranty, because I've never needed one before.

I carried the camera around with me for the next week, and the night before I was supposed to leave for San Diego, I took it out of my bag to download photos, and found that the LCD screen was shattered. Making the new camera I bought specifically for my vacation worthless. And since I was leaving the next morning, I didn't have a chance to take it to B&H before my trip to see it they could do anything. I made a run to the all night Apple Store to buy the closest camera they have. But I was so let down by it, and worried about breaking it, that I barely used it all throughout my trip.

When I got home, I returned the camera to the Apple Store without a problem. So now, I just needed to head down to B&H to see if they could do anything for me. I was prepared to hear them tell me that they weren't obligated to do anything, and I was ready to start dealing directly with Canon.

So I went to the returns desk, and showed another old Jewish man my problem. He could tell it was my fault, for carrying the camera without a case. But he said he would let it go this time, and he got me a brand new camera, and said just make sure it didn't happen again. I walked right back into the store and got a brand new camera case.

That, and their prices are better than Best Buy. Honestly, Matt, you live in NYC, there's no reason to buy a camera at Best Buy in New Jersey.
