Jason is correct. PC games and console games are indeed quite different things, sharing more dissimilarities than similarities. But the comparison is understandably tempting to make, even with someone who already knows that they're apples and oranges.

Course, many people have wanted to see the two merge since forever, and only now have a few parties been at all successful. As a critic and designer, I've always been paranoid that I'm not a good one since I'm not at all comfortable with PC gaming. And once I realized that I never will be since... I really don't have to... I've been at peace with myself. But as you can see, old biases often live on, even when you think your over them.

Though I still say that in many ways, PC game makers (or producer or whatever... the fact that I'm not familiar with a term shows my unfamiliarity I'd like to think) are indeed lazy, but it's not their fault. And maybe I don't mean lazy in the traditional sense?

How's that for discourse, baby!

Bah! PC gaming and console gaming are not the same animal, nor are the people playing them. Might as well toss in board game players if you want to belabour the point. Dedicated PC gamers were playing over networks long before XBOX Live users. Keyboards have cropped up unsuccessully on consoles (different animals). Never has a platform or fighting game made waves on the PC. I had full control over my X-Wing fighter and became Larry Laffer because of a keyboard! Blah, blah, blah.

There's no use in whittling out the differences for an 'Us vs. Them' war. Why not compare and contrast the reason why Super Mario Bros. was just as an awesomely engrossing experience as Police Quest? Otherwise everyone will just keep their blinders on and ride the rail to boredom.

No, "PC game makers" aren't "inherenly" lazy. And what is a PC "game maker" in that statement anyway?

I love discourse.

I just got done watching the trailer for Shadow the Hedgehog. Ugh... you're right, it's time to let that series die. What are they thinking?

I'm pretty positive that Sega is the only folks who even uses the term "extreme" anymore.

Sonic Team is no Miyamoto.

Sonic is a kids game. All attempts at edging things up has always been a mistake.
And adding guns just crosses the line. Being extreme--and being a killer are two different things.

I continue to lose faith in videogames.

PC Games: No One Lives Forever, to start, and the sequel A Spy In H.A.R.M.'s Way. TRON 2.0. X-Wing Alliance and Secret Weapons over Normandy. Sid Meier's Pirates!. Evil Genius. Freedom Force. The Dark Forces / Jedi Knight series. Homeworld. StarCraft. The last is a prime example: It beat the pants off the more-technologically-Advanced-yet-less-playable Total Annihiliation. And while several of them have console ports, I'm sorry but stuff gets lost in translation to lower-res screens (especially for strategy games) and the lower button count of a gamepad vs. a keyboard (especially for flight games).

And that list of titles is from among my recent personal favorites. I am by no means the Ultimate PC Gamer. There just aren't enough hours in the day or money on the tree for that.

Yes, 99% of the First-Person Shooters are competing on the basis of greater flashiness and/or realism or big-name franchises. They're competing only really with each other, and how well they Leverage New Techology is often the only edge they have in that competition. There are and handful of games in the category that actually concentrate on the story and gameplay.

Star Raiders for the Atari 2600: piece of crap. Star Raiders for the Atari 800 (the one with the keyboard): the greatest game ever written in 8KB or less, and you will never convince me otherwise.
