I saw that at the cinema when I was younger and more carefree, and it was great - lots of eye-bleeding explosions, decent animation and some earth-shaking revelations. I cried when Optimus died too. It's strange because Transformers The Movie is a lot better than crap like Digimon The Movie and Pokemon The Movie. Anyone who hasn't seen Transformers The Movie in a while, watch it again and don't actually be disappointed at all. It's still very watchable today, complete with the best 80's soundtrack ever.
