“Yes that dude is really in the Swiss Alps jump kicking a giant cardboard printout of Blizzard Man.”

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

In this post:
1. And the doctor says…
2. Sorry, Manhattan pizza still blows the big one.
3. Simply THE place for all your video game zine needs.
4. Fret Nice with the guitar controller is sorta “eh”.
5. Plus another wacky Christian game, the Wii Music that should been, and Blizzard Man.

I must say, I already miss posting for Tiny Cartridge. As noted previously, instead of stocking piling cool sh*t till my cup runneth over, to then pass along in some gargantuan blog post that 94% of everyone will never get all the way through, perhaps there’s something to presenting things in smaller bits and easier to process pieces.

Does that mean a massive change in how things will be done here from this point on? Probably not; despite a mountain of assorted things that require my immediate attention, I’m feeling listless and unproductive, plus Katie went to bed earlier, so I can’t bother her at the moment either. How about just a quick update covering just the past 24 hours?

- Went to the clinic and got looked at. Again, thanks for all the well wishes! And no, I do not have swine flu as one person on Facebook already asked. To be honest, I have no idea what I have exactly, at least until the blood tests are in, which should be by tomorrow afternoon.

The bad news is that I still feel like crap, and am not looking forward to turning in my prescriptions, since the visit alone cost a fortune (despite the fact that I paid on the low end of the sliding scale for those without insurance; guess you could say that my ailment required quite a bit of attention), and we all know how much medicine costs, even if you have health care backing you up.

But the good news is that I lost some weight! Yay for not being able to eat. Though I probably gained most of it back by pigging out during dinner earlier tonight. My appetite is returning, for better or worse (actually, for better, I know). Was going to grab a sandwich at Subway, but when I saw a big, hairy fly land on the tomatoes, went to Papa John’s next door instead.

Yes, I live in NYC and went to a chain pizzeria. So sue me. Sorry, but the stuff in Manhattan, unless you live in the West Village or near SVA (current and ex students alike will know exactly what place I’m referring to), totally blows for the most part. Sucks in Brooklyn as well, I’m afraid. As previously noted, the best stuff is actually in Queens; the joint a few blocks down from Hilary”s always comes to mind first.

- Had a nice conversation with Farel earlier today, the first time we’ve spoken in seemingly ages. Man, do I ever miss that guy. Had so much fun, hanging out with him during college, mostly prank calling cable access shows, and panicking whenever anyone *69ed. Cannot wait for MoCCA, if only for the chance to hang with my bro.

On a related noted (though not at the moment, but soon, you’ll see), I felt like a total ass for not mentioning this yesterday, so I’ll do so now: Attract Mode has just updated it’s zine selection, which is now better than ever. Both Life Meter and exp. are fine additions to the library (for those who missed my review of the latter, simply click here), and well worth everyone’s hard earned cash.

Best part is how the selection is going to become even bigger in just a bit! God, I want to show everyone the cover to THREE: FORT90ZINE in the worst way possible.

I also feel like a douche for constantly pimping my two weeks at Tiny Cartridge and neglecting to also mention in the same breathe that I wasn’t the only pretty girl asked to the dance; Adam from Attract Mode and Bruno from Eastern Mind (which is like my new favorite game blog ever; be sure to check out his stellar rundown of Hyakumanton no Bara Bara, the most beautiful looking PSP game that nobody’s heard of) were also on-hand, and JC was nice enough to compile all our guest contributions in one handy post! I also love how everyone seems to love my Cubivore toy.

- Fret Nice finally came out today for the Xbox 360! I thoroughly enjoyed the PS3 demo, even with a standard controller, but had biting at the chomps to play it the way it was meant to, via a guitar controller (all my Rock Band gear is for the 360). And… it’s not nearly as fun as I thought it would be, or at least remembered it being (back when I first touched the game at GDC 08). The main issue is movement; the green and yellow fret buttons are used to move left or right, which is not the worst thing in the world, but in order to jump you have lift the neck, which is not only used to negotiate obstacles but to initiate combat, and that’s the main problem. Aside from it not being nearly as response as a button press, it also just gets tiring after a while (and there’s quite a bit of jumping in the game). More like flat-out annoying to be honest. In the end, Fret Nice is easier/far more fun to play with standard controls, which somewhat defeats the very purpose of the title. Oh well.

- Anyhow, before calling it a night, three random game related items. First, via Katie; I guess The You Testament is yesterday’s news, because her new obsession is something called The Zoo Race, yet another wacky Christian-themed game. This video, while not quite as mind-blowingly insane as the one featuring the giant wearing a diaper that floats around to hug then punch people while Jesus is being crucified in the background, is still pretty damn close, if only for the voice of God, who is not only calling the race but sounds in desperate need of sleep.

Next, via Chad, a former colleague of mine from SVA: a percussion-based band controlled entirely by a pair of Wiimotes. Absolutely amazing. Honestly, this (or something similar) is what Wii Music should have been.

And finally, via Bryan Lee O’Malley; “ALL IN-CAMERA except the health bar and score!!!”

Hope you feel better! Your appetite returning is definitely a good thing, though.

Also, I seem to remember downtown (Chambers St area) having some good pizza dives as well, but beyond that, yeah — Queens rules. God I miss the pizza. I miss it so much.

Carmine’s in Williamsburg has a good plain slice, or there’s Vinnie’s if you want a specialty slice (the buffalo wing slice is so good), and Triangolo in Greenpoint has an awesome Sicilian slice (don’t bother with their regular though).
