SHAME & SMELLS: Otakon 2009 Part 4

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

Well the San Diego Comic Con just got started, and there’s sure to be plenty of images of cosplayers from that particular affair when all is said and done. But we’re still only halfway through my jaunt through Otakon! So no time to waste. And to kick things off yet again, here’s another Faith from Mirror’s Edge, who like Chun Li last time gets bonus points for being Asian…

Yet another Mega Man Star Force character. Or is she from Battle Network? Lamar?

Just a bunch of Sailor Scouts, lounging around…

… It’s all about Sailor Uranus or Sailor Saturn btw.

Speaking of old school character, it’s a Ronin Warrior!

Definitely one of the best Sephiroths I’ve ever seen…

A girl dressed as Starscream. Truth be told, her attire was not the most impressive thing ever, but that Soundwave purse is totally money…

Came across a cat on my way to a panel…

… The panel in question was “How To Heckle Bad Anime Good”, which to be totally honest is a topic that’s sorely needed. As previously noted, animu fans are just not very funny; all they can do is make the most obvious of jokes, or simply recycle old internet memes. And not helping is the often cringe-worthy delivery, which I can only describe as stuff heard on audition tapes for MST3K open casting calls that never got past the garbage pail. But of course, I can’t tell you how it went since the line was once again, very, VERY long. At least I was able to run into the EVA girls in their plug-suits on my way back to the convention center…

… Once again, the colors, especially with Rei’s hair was dead on. But not here! Thanks Nikon.

It’s a chick Bowser!

Here we have a nice little gathering of assorted Miyazaki characters…

No joke, literally half an hour after wondering if I was going to see any Killer 7 characters, along comes Mask de Smith…

Now some might recall a pic of Jushin “Thunder” Liger from three years ago. Well, that same guy was back, and in the same exact spot as before, but this time dressed as Ultraman. And the day before, he was wearing some other Japanese wrestler’s tights, also hanging out in the same exact spot. So basically, the guy just stands around literally all day long, practically begging to have his picture taken. Odd to say the least. But I decided to be nice (all the times I passed him by, it appeared that no one paid much heed to the dude) and snap a pic…

I love it when old folks try to hang with the kids, often to great effect!

This Ninja Gaiden kinda blew me away…

Hey, it’s Ema Skye from the Ace Attorney games!

And the original Ace Attorney himself, Phoenix Wright…

… Main reason why I’m bothering to include this guy is how he cracked me up with “I object to that picture!” while snapping his pic.

Another Street Fighter, this time we have Vega…

On my way to lunch, spotted these girls in some very excellent Transformers attire…

Not only could one find kids in crazy costumes inside the convention center, but all over town as well, like the harbor area down the street…

…. Where a bunch of Naruto and Soul Eater characters were all hanging out. Like this rather cute looking Maka Albarn…

I hope this guy’s hotel is not too far away, cuz Baltimore is a scary town and me thinks he would not last long in certain parts…

Hey, it’s Morrigan!

And here’s a pair of KOS-MOSs (sorry if the one in black is another character; I simply do not know enough abut Xenosaga to really know)…

Just some dude. Dressed as Scarlett O’Hara…

Unfortunately, the name of this girl’s character TOTALLY escapes me at the moment…

Once back inside, I stumbled across the spectacle that was this 25 foot tall Starscream…

Not too far away was the Metal Gear Solid cyber ninja…

Along with Half-Life’s Gordon Freeman…

There were a decent number of power rangers running around. Here we have both green and white…

Two girls, both dressed like Vaan from Final Fantasy XII…

Dr Girlfriend and the Phantom Limb! Reminds me, I still need to get season three DVD of Venture Brothers…

TO BE CONTINUED!

Wow, I mean, those EVA girls are just… WOW! The red-suited one has a lot of facial similarity to the anime character! Did you at least get their phone numbers? ;D
