OPTIMUS PRIME 1984-2005: NEVER FORGET

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

- Last night I went and saw Art Spiegelman, the creator of the groundbreaking (like I really need to say that) Maus, and Marjane Satrapi, the creator of Persepolis, which has been frequently compared to Maus. I just started reading the book thanks to MK, who lent me both volumes, and its pretty amazing. So it was a real treat to hear them both talk about their work.

They spoke at Parsons in front of a packed audience, and some really good stuff was shared, such as how (and maybe this is commonly known, but since I don’t follow the comics scene all that closely, it news to me) Spiegelman is currently working on a musical based on comics called Drawn to Death. Plus, tons of other great pieces of knowledge was passed along, which I really wish I could share, but due to the crappy sound set-up, much of it was hard to make out. And, just like every other Q&A I’ve been to, regardless of the subject matter, ended with some asshole who just rambled and on and on, culminating on some idiotic, often highly insulting question, and last night was no different.

- Speaking of comics, Robin who was with us at the event, and he reminded me that this year’s MoCCA art fest is less than a month away. Well, there goes my plan for having a comic on-hand, which was originally going to be my submission for True Porn 2. Once again, for years I’ve tried to finish various comic projects, but was held back due to being “too busy”, which translates to being too lazy and distracted. But now, at a time when I really want to do, more so than ever, I genuinely am too preoccupied to even start one.

Also for MoCCA, I had hoped to master the art of screen-printing and have some shirts for sale. In addition to ones featuring my original art, I wanted commemorate the death our hero, and friend, Optimus Prime. Most people seem to have forgotten that he died, for us, this very year, as depicted in one the greatest animated features of all time, Transformers The Movie.

The shirt would have been sooo rad too; it’s the Autobot symbol with a tear coming from one eye (here’s a rough), and OPTIMUS PRIME 1984-2005: NEVER FORGET in bold right underneath. Why? Because it’s the truth; not a day goes by that I don’t think of his sacrifice, and all that he stood for (okay, I’m kidding). In fact, you know how are parents talk about where they were when they heard Kennedy was killed? I speak in the same terms when it comes to the death of Optimus (okay, that time I’m sorta serious).

Anyway, I guess there’s still enough time to do shirts by SPX.

- And still speaking about Transformers, the music video for The Touch has finally been unearthed. God bless Stan Bush.

- Back to the subject of clothing, remember the Katamari hats from a while back? Well how about Pikmin hats?

And here’s the second one. I guess its from some start called Anime Heads. What’s next, the Minish Cap?

- Sticking with the subject of Anime heads, Garnier now has a product called Manga Head. And yes, this for real; its on store shelves in the UK.

- Back to the subject of online auctions, check out the stuff that this guy from Japan. Its not so much what he’s selling, but how he’s selling…

- Speaking of selling stuff, I was downtown yesterday and noticed a huge PSP on Houston St. And like almost every PSP, there’s a problem with the screen, but this time its not just dead pixels.

- Finally, tonight (or tomorrow night, for some reason I can’t figure this out) is the MTV Xbox 360 premier special. All I know is that its being hosted by Elijah Wood and it starts out with some sketch of him dressed as Frodo, searching for a ring, which I’m assuming is the power button for the 360, which you haven’t seen, has to have the largest power button for any electronic device, ever. Yikes. Again, I’m not missing tv too much.

Which reminds me, I have yet to get this week’s Trailer Park Boys!

I still think Transformers The Movie is one of the best things ever. I saw that at the cinema when I was younger and more carefree, and it was great – lots of eye-bleeding explosions, decent animation and some earth-shaking revelations. I cried when Optimus died too. It’s strange because Transformers The Movie is a lot better than crap like Digimon The Movie and Pokemon The Movie. Anyone who hasn’t seen Transformers The Movie in a while, watch it again and don’t actually be disappointed at all. It’s still very watchable today, complete with the best 80′s soundtrack ever.

I would totally buy one of the crying Autobot shirts.

    Yeah, I’d buy one too.

If you haven’t heard this song, you ABSOLUTELY MUST:

“The Death of Optimus Prime” by Mr McFeely, available at http://www.mrmcfeely.com/

Someone mentioned it to me on #ic nearly a year ago, and it’s been dear to my heart ever since.

According to Robot Chicken, Optimus Prime died of Testicular Cancer.

Prime how we miss you ever so.

Yeah, if there was anyone who could fix the mess the Middle East, it would be Optimus.

God, how I wish this was a reality.
