That vaguely creepy looking PaRappa cosplayer you see above? Spotted him while I was at E3, and I don’t believe he was part of Sony’s booth. So unlike PAX, which is open to the general public, the guy above paid $995 to be there. Yikes.
Since my last Instagram dump was on the eve of my trip to LA, I figure that’s a good place to start. In the end, E3 was what it was, yet I still managed to find a few curiosities that have not been reported to death, I think. Like this super rare Puppy Pong machine…
The retro section of the show floor was the chock full of amazing oddities, like this notebook that belonged to Atari techies back in the day…
Though my absolute favorite was this old Activision scrapbook that commemorating their sponsorship of the Special Olympics…
Here was have Vic Nguyen’s contribution to the Into The Pixel art show…
Speaking of CAPY, it’s Kris & Nathan at Venus Patrol’s HORIZON event…
I’m afraid my Instagrammed pic of their new game isn’t nearly as pretty as Kris’s, so I’m just going to borrow his if that’s cool…
Funomena’s dynamic duo, Keita Takahashi & Robin Hunicke, were also present…
Though my personal highlight of the entire thing was the chance to be in the same room with both Eric and Simon Carless, aka our own little GameSetWatch reunion…
There was plenty of fun time hangs outside of the show as well; got to check out LA Game Space space, right before construction commenced. That’s Adam’s son Dante, running towards the camera, btw…
Adam also took me to a place called Japan Arcade, which I’d totally be at every single night if I ever moved to LA (which I’m kinda/sorta thinking about)…
Many fun rounds of Super Bishi Bashi Champ were had…
There you can also you buy soda, candy, Raiden for the Jaguar, NiGHTS strategy guides from Japan, and then this…
I also loved how, at every single point of my trip, I was constantly reminded that I was in LA…
Soon it was back to NY, and my first chiptune show of the summer was the aforementioned ladies night at Pulsewave. Here’s Drum Machine Dating Service (Jenn De La Vega) clearly enjoying herself…
At another show, I spotted this Omodaka tee that I’d probably kill for, if not for the green color, which really doesn’t do it for me…
This isn’t from a chiptune show, but it most certainly involved Game Boys (along with Tamara Yadao, aka Corset Lore, who orchestrated the whole thing). Here we have its audio being sent to boom boxes across a gallery space via radio transmitters, which is that other thing in his hand. Really hard to explain; you kinda had to be there…
Moving onto the NES’s native sound format, it’s down the corner from where Minusbaby lives apparently…
One day, as Diego Garcia was chillin’ at the park, in the distance he spotted… Luigi?
While on the subject of Nintendo, they recently decided to shut off certain services on the regular ol’ Wii. On the last day of the Check Mii Out Channel, I saved Tyler Perry from the grips of oblivion…
Obviously the big thing this summer has been New Leaf, and thus we have the Animal Crossing portion of this post! Among those who populate my Instagram feed with AC pics, Kimika‘s are by the far the cream of the crop. It’s hard determining her finest work, though this gorgeous snapshot of K.K. Slider definitely qualifies …
Along with her pooping…
K, one more, simply because it reminds up all that Maré’s artwork (in this case, his classic GIRLS < PIZZA print) looks great on any wall…
Meanwhile, Mike McWhertor just found himself the ultimate bedside companion…
New Leaf is quite popular among cosplayers this summer as well, as Meesh demonstrates…
The creator of Adventure Time also loves the game to death, and here we have Pendleton Ward as an Animal Crossing villager, as depicted by Natasha Allegri…
Camila Gormaz sez: “Oh, Mr. Blathers, if I ever run out of fossils, I’d kill my neighbors for you!”
Not to brag, but my AC:NL home arcade is pretty dope. For anyone interested, drop me a line and swing on by. I have an entire wing dedicated to pinball and ping-pong, plus another filled with billiard tables, darts, foosball, mahjong, even a karaoke set up…
Sticking with the house that Mario built, it’s amazing the things that people will reveal online, even in NintendoLand. Thankfully you have folks like SQ to help capture and immortalize the awkwardness…
Back in the real world, there’s a skee ball centric bar in Brooklyn that my pal Megan told me about that I seriously need to check out…
Chris Person was able to attend the Come And Play Festival a few weeks back, which I unfortunately had to miss. Which also meant I didn’t get the chance to play the latest from Doug Wilson, Edgar Rice Frotteur…
While in Germany, Chris also ran into some Lemmings…
Whereas Anamanaguchi, while touring in Florida, ran into the Hulkster…
As for Kris, I have no idea where the hell this is…
Nor the circumstances that led to him being face to face with Wolfmother…
But this much I know already: Zack has a penchant for obscure sports games, in which men are just men…
I’d like to think that I know my Mega Drive softs, but I’ve never heard of the following, courtesy of therealphire…
Whereas I recognize this one; it’s Zen-Nippon Pro Wrestling. Fun-fact: I kinda have a thing for puroresu, or Japanese professional wrestling, as does shikeke…
Am also way into Japanese shumps, so thanks for the reminder Mister Raroo; I totally need to pick up XIIZeal/DeltaZeal…
So the Raroo clan swung by their local Buddhist temple over the weekend, for Obon Festival. Turns out, anime cons aren’t the only place where one can get gaming schwag…
It’s just Stu Brett, watching Akira on his NES Edition GBA, tis all…
Had zero idea that Dikembe Mutombo’s 4 1/2 Weeks to Save the World had gotten an arcade port, and yet Madeleine Flores came across a cabinet in the wild…
According to TPHD‘s calculations, there are exactly 112 pixels in the Galaga ship…
Bryan Green just whipped up a brand new Paperfoldable, this one based upon the E.T. for the 2600…
Time to see what Olly Moss has been up to, and dare I say that this Dark Souls illustration is kinda cute?
Lamar‘s most recent Mega Man doodle is a rather frank depiction of him confronting his own mortality. Or so that’s how I interpret it…
Anyway, who wants Mega Man pancakes? sixokay will make you some…
Wherever the heck Lindsay Collins is, they’re serving Angry Birds rice balls, as well Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z varieties. Also, rice balls stuffed with cheese? Yuck…
Meesh came across the following at Five Guys, in which someone astutely notes, “Gave up on chilidogs I see.”…
To warm up his Risograph machine, Seibei likes to make copies of this totally fab Sparkster (from Rocket Knight Adventures) drawing…
And here’s a Katamari piece he did a couple years ago. I spot a Sealab 2021 DVD, Kanye West, and a Wendy’s hamburger, among other things…
And here’s a game idea that Dominique Ferland once had, called The World is Afloat…
Mingjue Helen Chen is a Disney animator who just did a Legend of Zelda illustration for… something you’ll all be hearing about very soon! In the meanwhile, check out this lovely in progress pic…
Speaking of Zelda, Suda 51 just nabbed one of those recently released retro figures that’s based upon the art from the original edition’s instruction manual…
I wonder if Nick Thorburn saved poor Pickachu here…
… Unless it smelled like ass. Given that he’s in the trash and all. And since we’re talking about butts, it’s Jacob Smiley play testing a game called Shoot the Butts…
Henry Andrew Baum does an impeccable job of capturing the wide variety of visuals that one will find at chiptune shows. On one hand, you’ve got this…
Whereas on the other…
Back to Game Boys, ATAMA & Company has this rather keen print for sale…
And Insert Coin produces this Street Fighter legging that Amanda McGinnis is sporting…
Patrick Klepek had much better taste in attire as a kid than myself, as evidenced by this bomb ass Mortal Kombat shirt…
Finally got the chance to check out Dannel Jurado‘s zine collection…
As for my own, it recently expanded by a considerable degree…
I also recently ordered a few games through Play Asia and noticed some curious hieroglyphics on the mailing label. Lady bug is greater than chicken leg? Okay…
So the latest Instagram feed that I’m currently obsessed with is some guy or gal in Japan who goes by miki800. Here’s just a taste…
K, time to finally wrap this sucker up. To anyone who has actually stuck around this far, my many thanks! Alex Savage extends his gratitude as well…
