Get Ready To… HYPERCUBE!!!

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

So tonight’s the big night! FORT90 X BABYCASTLES finally goes down. Needless to say, myself and everyone else involved behind the scenes are beyond psyched. Gonna be HUGE, that much is certain. Case in point: the show has been moved upstairs, due to the fact that the Facebook RSVP list has officially exceed the number of people the basement area can hold. Which might be the first time ever such a change in plans has ever been made!

Which is both good and bad; there’ll will plenty of room to play games and mill about, the acoustics are far better suited for a live performance, plus I just love the main space in general. Though the air conditioning is… somewhat nonexistent I’m afraid. Then again, it’s not a happening party, especially when in the middle of summer in NYC, unless you sweat your ass off, right?

Oh, also, just found out that my DJ for the evening, dmauro, is gonna be showing up late, cuz he’s catching the Scott Pilgrim movie beforehand. lol… but hey, he’s passing along his iPod for his absence, and it’s not like I can be upset at the guy, since he did produce that totally hawt show flyer.

Anyhow, the past week has been pretty much dedicated towards applying the finishing touches. Since I’m a noob when it comes to all things related to XP, Kunal, Syed, Joe, and the rest of the Babycastles crew have been the ones dealing with the actual hard work of putting tech together. Though I’ve still been doing my part, mostly on the promotional end; went all over the city this past weekend, putting up flyers at places where all the cool kids congregate. You know, like Giant Robot, Toy Tokyo, Forbidden Planet, Jim Hanley’s. Hopefully some of folks have seen at least one of them! Meanwhile, Kunal and Syed took care of Brooklyn in proper fashion, of course.

I’ve also been busying reaching out to folks via online, though I’ve seriously been blown away by all the voluntary shout outs from friends and colleges alike. Here’s just a small taste of all the AWESOME attention that the show has garnered, from…

- Tiny Cartridge
- GameSetWatch
- Bytejacker
- TIGSource
- NYC Game Industry
- NYU Game Center
- the Same Hat Tumblr
- Brandon Boyer’s Tumblr

… Plus there’s everyone on Facebook and Twitter, like from good pals Dave Roman and Steve Totilo… and so many more, too many to properly list! So I seriously need to thank everyone out there from the bottom of my heart for such much support and enthusiasm and support. It means a ton to me.

Otherwise, not much to report. Had to blow off Pulsewave this past Saturday night, which sucked cuz it was the special 21st birthday celebration for the Game Boy (still haven’t checked to see how the advertised Game Boy cupcakes turned out), again due to planning and promotions. Though I was able to spare an evening to see Heather and the rest of the her Midnight Show crew perform at the UCB last Thursday! Here we are at the bar afterwards…

Oh, and another fond friend from Cali came was came to town a few days ago! Fellow zinester Raina Lee, creator of the Citizen Kane of video game zines…

… Here we are having an underwhelming Japanese curry lunch in Billyburg. And sorry for all the gratuitous pics of me with women folks. Rest assured, after tonight, there’s gonna be plenty of pics of me with sweaty dudes!

Oh, real quick: as everyone knows, glomag will be the special musical guest for tonight. As some folks also know, I recently began writing for EGM’s digital format. Well my chiptunes piece, which I actually wrote a little while ago, was finally published this morning, and it stars Chris Burke himself!

… I’m hoping it’ll be a big enough hit for other game culture related piece to be greenlit, perhaps for the print version one of these days!

And finally, my very first blog post for Attract Mode made its way up, and surprise, it’s pertains to tonight’s festivities. For those who still don’t know what the heck Babycastles is and why it’s so rad, well, here’s my reasons.

K, that’s it! Can’t wait to rock out and finally relax the rest of this weekend. Phil Fish came into town last week, and already got a proper dose of the splendors of New York City cable access, but there’s much else to do. And perhaps you all can help him show a good time tonight? Later folks!

Good luck with tonight. Sounds like it’s already going to be a success.

As a NYC resident (was in Brooky for 5 years) – I just wanted to say congrats and good luck. I am going to have to check this out at some point.
