Close But No Cigar

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

I’ll cut to the chase: got some bad news. This weekend, at the MoCCA Art Fest, where Attract Mode will be making its New York City debut, the latest issue of the FORT90ZINE will not be premiering as advertised. I won’t bore everyone with the specifics, other then to say that nothing ever goes according to plan, so you simply try your best to do deal with whatever. But when it gets to that point in which things become so out of whack, there’s simply no other choice than to hit the brakes.

I guess if I really wanted to, I could quickly whip something up in the nick of time; I hate to admit that production didn’t wrap up weeks ago, since the deadline was there well in advance, but in addition to various other extraneous circumstances, PAX really did mess up the game plan. Plus, virtually every single other exhibitor for MoCCA that I’ve spoken with has echoed the same sentiment: the show being in April and not in June or July like usual has created a dilemma of many sorts (along with several other issues that have forced many to throw their hands in the air due to frustration). But in the end, I simply do not wish to deliver a sub-par product, especially after learning my lesson from those who picked up the first editions of #1 and #2 and were nice enough to point out that I misspelled the name Mario (among other equally embarrassing mistakes).

I just feel supremely stupid for promising something and not delivering. Though I mostly feel bad for the contributors that busted their asses to get their stuff to me when I asked, especially when it was not the most convenient for them. At the very least that means the final product will be all the better, plus #3′s launch party at the end of the month will be all the more meaningful! More details on that when the time comes.

Oh, and there was also one other item that I was hoping to have this weekend, and unless there’s a complete miracle, it too will be absent. Drat. At least I’ll have plenty of copies of the first two zines, along with the first edition of Kill Screen, various chiptunes CDs, Tristan Perich‘s Loud Objects, plus shirts from both Meat Bun and NULLSLEEP!!! All that, plus more, and despite PAX wiping out much of Attract Mode’s stock!

Once again, MoCCA Festival 2010 will be at the 69th Regiment Armory, located on 68 Lexington Avenue, New York, New York. The table location is B15, which will be shared with my girlfriend Katie Skelly, and near our good friend Pat Lewis, along with the equally awesome Travis Nichols! I think? If you’re in the Big Apple this weekend, please stop on by.

And be sure to check out both Tiny Cartridge and NYC Game Industry for info on special discounts!

UPDATE: Well, just got back from print shop that was doing the new cover. Even if everything had gone according to plan, it would still be delayed due to them screwing up big time. They look mostly excellent…

… But trust me, they’re messed up (I’m too aggravated at the moment to explain properly). Not sure what to do with them… might sell them at the show if anyone’s interested. On the bright side, I went out to Brooklyn to pick up the Nullsleep shirt and picked up some extra goodies for the table!

… Got some mini CDs (Nullsleep, Mark Denardo, and the 8bits of Christmas), the 8bitpeoples commemorative 50th release, and some Blip Fest buttons! Alright, I’m finally ready for the weekend.

Got any of those Meat Bun Street Fighter Poster shirts in XL left? I’ve always wanted one, and was just too lazy to order them.

    lol

We had a few left from PAX, but for whatever dumb reason, I decided not to bring them along to NYC/MoCCA, Needless to say, I feel like a total idiot!

Silly question but… when those Zines are finally finished… I can get one online right? I don’t think I’ll ever make it to any expos…

Yes they will be! As soon as they’re done I’m express mailing them to Attract Mode HQ in LA. Which should hopefully be by the end of this month…
