All Good Things…

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

Tonight’s the night! For those who haven’t heard the news, this has been my final week as a regular contributor/editor for GameSetWatch. And this evening marks the official end of my illustrious run, which was exactly six months and two days long.

What else can I say? It sucks. No, it totally sucks. But hey, I had the best time ever while it lasted, and hope others did as well.

As for why I’m being benched, there’s not a whole lot to say, other than how I simply wasn’t bringing in the numbers that the powers that be were looking for, at least to justify the expensive of having me as a full-timer. I think the occasional grammatical faux pas and overabundance of weird sh*t also did me little favors.

Still, getting the axe was a shock to say the least; I had gotten nothing but tremendous feedback since the very beginning? albeit from primarily friends and colleagues. Who unfortunately did not amount to the X number of visitors that was hoped for. But that’s just how it goes in this business. And to be completely honest, I’m almost shocked I lasted this long!

I was brought in to mix things up, plus offer a slightly skewed, more niche-oriented view on things. Which I delivered (over-delivered some might say). Hence why I’m still very much appreciative of Eric for thinking of me when GSW 2.0 was first conceived of, as well as Simon for his seal of approval. Those guys are still the best.

Also, I have a funny feeling that I’ll be back, in some form of fashion. Case in point, a few things I had been working on have now found a new home at Gamasutra, in the form of special reports. So I’m still part of the UBM TechWeb family, I’m happy to say.

On the plus side, I do welcome having some extra free time to play around with. I must say, maintaining three full-time writing posts has been kicking my ass the past couple of months. Cue reason #XYZ as to why FORT90ZINE4ANSWER is not finished yet. But it’s coming along, swear to God! And perhaps I’ll be able to pick up the pace? more on that soon, btw.

Another benefit will be more regular updates at where it all started, aka this blog! I have entertained the idea of simply migrating my GSW-level of output onto here, but once again, I’m also looking to somewhat take it easy, at least for the time being. I may try to go halfway, we’ll see.

As is, I already have a ton of awesome cosplay pics from New York Comic Con to share. Courtesy of my new official photographer, Emi! But that’ll have to wait just a little bit longer, cuz in addition to one last night of GSW business to take care of?

I’ll be making a return appearance at the RE/Mixed Media Festival tomorrow evening, in Brooklyn! Dumbo to be precise. And I’ll be there to talk about, what else, video game culture! The discussion will be the final panel of the evening, the main event you could say, hence why it’ll be a whopping two hours. Moderated by Josephine Dorado, I’ll be sharing the stage with Jeremy Pesner and my good buddy Chris Burke. For more info, simply hit this page.

? In the meanwhile, here’s an image that I took myself on the NYCC show floor and which was a hit on Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr. I’ll have additional pics from the zine in which Snap, Crackle and Pop as an elfen centipede comes as well?

See some of you tomorrow night! And a sincerely thank you to everyone that?s supported my GameSetWatch run. The kind words everyone has passed along the past few days has meant a lot me.
